Greetings:

Several huge stories today, including one that is just breaking.

The New York Times reports that Paramount is delaying its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros., which may scuttle that deal.

And a flashback:

March 20, 2025: Our UPDATE used the term SEISMIC in telling you that the ABC affiliation in Miami was moving from its longtime home at WPLG-TV to a digital sub channel of FOX affiliate WSVN-TV.

Today’s news involves a flurry of similar seismic affiliation changes, though in smaller markets.

The biggest of those markets is # 25 St. Louis, where the ABC affiliation is moving from Sinclair’s KDNL-TV to a sister over the air station (Channel 32.1) of Gray Media’s KMOV-TV (CBS).

IN LESS THAN SIX WEEKS.

Here’s what the KMOV website says. I could not find a story on KDNL’s website, but the station has not produced any local news in many years.

But wait…there’s more (as the late night TV commercials of years ago used to scream.)

Nexstar is losing CBS affiliations in SIX markets. Four are moving to Hearst owned stations in those markets, while Forum Communications picks up two of those in smaller markets. Again, Deadline.com has details.

AND THOSE CHANGES TAKE EFFECT ONE WEEK FROM TOMORROW!

To no one’s surprise, Nexstar says it will increase newscasts in some of those markets.

A new job for a former New York City news director, and a move within Tegna fills an ND opening in St. Louis.

Morris

AMY MORRIS is joining CNN as Vice President/News for the East Region. She posted the good news on her Linkedin page. The move allows her to stay in New York, where she most recently was Senior Vice President/News for NBC’s WNBC/WNJU-TV (NBC-Telemundo), a job she left last March when that position was eliminated. Amy’s Linkedin bio has her full career history.

But that’s not the only news today.

DENISHA THOMAS moves within Tegna to become the next ND for KSDK-TV (NBC) in St. Louis, where she replaces TIM GERAGHTY. Tim transferred to KHOU-TV in Houston last March.. The station’s website has more. Denisha’s been the Director of News Content for Tegna’s WXIA-TV (NBC) in Atlanta where she reports to Director of Content TODD SPESSARD. She previously served as ND for Tegna’s WATN-TV in Memphis and interim ND at WWL-TV (CBS) in New Orleans. More on her background here.

Speaking of WWL, we made a bad mistake in Sunday’s newsletter reporting the departure of current WWL ND NICOLE EVERAGE. We misspelled her name (accidentally inserting the similar name of one of our neighbors.) Apologies to Nicole, and to you.

KOAA/KKTV, Colorado Springs, CO…DANIEL SANCHEZ, who’s been the news director for Scripps’ KOAA (NBC) for just more than a year, will add additional duties as ND for KKTV (CBS). (Scripps recently acquired KKTV as part of a station swap with Gray Media and will operate the two stations from one newsroom.) Here’s the memo from GM ROSS WHITE. JOSH BARLOW had been the ND at KKTV before crossing the street to Nexstar’s KXRM-TV late last year.

WWL-TV, New Orleans, LA…NICOLE (WAIVERS) EVERAGE will leave this Tegna owned CBS affiliate in a few weeks. She’s been the news director here since May 2023 when she was promoted from executive producer. Nicole’s also worked for stations in Dallas, Orlando and two other New Orleans stations as you’ll learn from her Linkedin page.

KNOE-TV, Monroe, LA…KRISTIN HODGES (right) has left this Gray Media owned CBS/ABC affiliate after just over three years as the news director. She’s earlier worked in Roanoke, Tampa, and Chattanooga. She posted this on Linkedin.

Obituary:

Comings

KLAS-TV (Nexstar/CBS) remembered its former news director RON COMINGS in this on-air tribute earlier this week. A nice gesture considering Ron left the station in 2015 when Nexstar eliminated his job. We told you last week that Ron, a six-time news director, lost his battle with cancer earlier this month shortly before his 78th birthday. He is survived by his wife KERRI and four children.

Nexstar filed a blistering 50 page brief in federal court against opponents of its proposed takeover of Tegna.

The New York Post has this story calling CBS News July 4th programming ‘amateur hour’.

And Variety has a deep dive on the mood at CNN as it awaits a possible takeover by Paramount.

IRE has a new executive director. JONATHAN KEALING joins from the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) where he was chief network officer. Jonathan’s complete career history is in the IRE news release. He replaces DIANA FUENTES who died unexpectedly last March after almost five years as the executive director.

Tegna’s WFAA-TV (ABC) in Dallas has a new assistant news director. KOLTEN PARKER moves across Texas from KSAT-TV (Graham Media/ABC) in San Antonio, where he was Manager of Coverage and Content. (The search is on for his replacement there, as you’ll see in the Paid Help Wanted ad above.) Kolten previously worked for the Texas Observer and the San Antonio Express News.

LARRY LAWSON is the new Assistant News Director for Hearst’s WVTM-TV in Birmingham, AL.

General Manager News and Notes:

You learned above that MELISSA MEDALIE has been promoted to Senior VP and Regional GM of FOX stations in Orlando, Tampa, and Gainesville. She’s been the VP/ND for WOFL-TV in Orlando since 2019. In her new role, she replaces JEFF MALONEY who is retiring at the end of the month.

Despite the holiday, a fair amount of activity to tell you about.

There are THREE new news directors in this week’s report, including ONE in a top THREE market. And there’s just ONE new opening, that created by the incumbent ND taking one of three jobs that filled this week.

Our count of ND openings drops to 23.

For the second consecutive week, we have an obituary for a former Spokane ND who also held FIVE other ND jobs.

NO general manager chases this week, to the best of my knowledge.

Also:

• A former RTDNA chairman sues his former station claiming he was fired for whistleblowing.
• Gray Media is buying six stations, some of which they were already involved with.
• And after 61 years in broadcasting, a former Californian ND and GM is retiring.

She’s been the assistant ND since 2022 and first joined this o-and-o as a writer more than 25 years ago, in 2000. Jessica replaces LUIS FELIPE GODINEZ who left in March to become ND for KMEX-TV, the Univision station in Los Angeles.

WKRN-TV, Nashville, TN…RANDY WARDELL moves across Tennessee to become the next ND for this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the ND for Rincon’s WHBQ-TV (FOX) in Memphis for the last four years and previously spent ten years as an EP at WSOC-TV in Charlotte. Randy replaces ELBERT TUCKER who retired earlier this year after ten years as ND here, and also as an ND in Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati.

KRIS-TV, Corpus Christi, TX…CHRIS MAY moves within Scripps to become ND for this NBC affiliate. Here’s the note from GM KRISTEN DARDEN. He’s been an EP in charge of steaming content at WFTS-TV (ABC) in Tampa. He joined the station in 2012 as a producer. Obituary:

A memorial service for former news director RON COMINGS will be held later this year. Wednesday’s UPDATE told you that he lost his battle with bladder cancer shortly before his 78th birthday. He’d worked as a realtor (along with his wife KERRI) since leaving KLAS-TV (CBS) in Las Vegas in 2015. Ron worked as an ND in many markets but began as a reporter. More on his history here. As a reporter in Orlando, he also did perhaps the first story on a water skiing squirrel.

BILL BAUMAN, who went on to a long career as an ND and GM, was on the assignment desk that day and tells us how the story came about.

Ron is survived by his wife, Kerri, and four children, one of whom followed him into TV news. Daughter ALIX is an EP at one of her dad’s former stations, WFTV in Orlando.

Former RTDNA chair TERENCE SHEPHERD is suing his former employer, KPBS-TV in San Diego, claiming he was improperly dismissed from his job as news director there. He claims the dismissal came because he alerted senior management about a potential FCC violation. KPBS posted this story on its website.

Gray Media has purchased six stations from American Spirit Media. As you’ll discover in the news release, they’ve already been connected to five of those stations.
