Monday, September 21, 2015 UPDATE:

A veteran news director returns to Florida in today’s UPDATE.

Bob C.

Bob C.

BOB CLINKINGBEARD has been named news director for Tegna’s WTSP-TV in Tampa/St. Petersburg. It’s a move within the company for Bob, who’s been the ND for WFMY-TV in Greensboro for the past five years.

Here’s the memo from GM ELLIOTT WISER to the staff.

I mentioned a return to Florida: Bob spent 3+ years as news director for WOFL-TV in Orlando, the FOX o-and-o there, and another seven years as ND for (then) FOX’s WITI-TV in Milwaukee. He’s also worked in Detroit (for two different stations), Philadelphia, Baltimore, Birmingham, Alexandria, LA, and Columbia, MO.

Bob’s an avid Harley rider, a big Packers’ fan, and he and his wife PAM have worked with therapy dogs, visiting schools and hospitals to visit students and patients.

At WTSP, he replaces PETER ROGHAAR who’s been the ND here for almost six years. Peter’s making an unusual turn and moving to the sales department for this CBS affiliate.

Have a great week!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

This week’s EIJ conference in Orlando saw 1,500 attendees and a sold out exhibit floor, in combination with SPJ and NAHJ. Next year’s gathering will be in New Orleans from September 18-20. New officers were elected and you can read about that in our Names in the News section.

I enjoyed meeting some of you for the first time and seeing others again.

This week’s newsletter brings news of just ONE new ND opening, and ONE newly filled job. That leaves our count of open positions at 27.

One of those open jobs is among our FIVE paid help wanted ads, which this week includes a sales position at the Associated Press.

We have FOUR new news management appointments in Names in the News. Interestingly, all are promotions within stations or groups. And there’s just ONE GM change, this one involving a former ND turned GM.

And there’s an obituary for the mother of a group news executive.

All that…and more…as you read on.

New News Director Opening:

Houston

Houston

KFOR-TV, Oklahoma City, OK…CARLTON HOUSTON leaves Oklahoma for the bright lights of Washington, DC, where he’ll be the Assistant News Director for WUSA-TV, the Tegna owned CBS affiliate. Carlton and WUSA ND BILL LORD know each other from the days when they were both news directors in the Allbritton chain. Carlton’s been ND for this Tribune owned station for 2+ years, spent six years as an ND in Tulsa, held management jobs in a number of other cities, and began his career on-air.

Newly Named News Director:

WDHN-TV, Dothan, AL…we’re a little late in reporting STEPHEN CREWS‘ ascension to news director for this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. He was promoted last May, following the departure of KEN CURTIS who spent 26 years in the ND chair and is now Senior Reporter for WTVY-TV in Dothan. Stephen has worked at WDHN for almost five years, and spent many years before that working for some weekly newspapers in the region.

Because we strive for accuracy in this space, I will tell you that we erred last week in our report on CHRIS HUSTON‘s move to KMVT-TV in North Twin Falls, ID. We told you that station was owned by Neuhoff Communications. Neuhoff was sold to Gray Television this summer.

Greetings:

Down, down, down.

I refer to the list of open ND jobs, which falls to 27 after FIVE openings were filled this week, with another THREE jobs opening up. (Just a few weeks ago, that list of openings was over 40!)

THREE of those open ND jobs among the FIVE paid help wanted ads in this week’s edition, including an ad for the most recent National Edward R. Murrow award winner for overall excellence.

We have updated information about memorial plans for the late JIM SANDERS who died this week, along with some tributes to him.

Lots of items in Names in the News, and three GM changes to share with you.

By the way, I hope to see many of you at this week’s EIJ conference in Orlando, which I still call (force of habit) the RTDNA convention! Some of our advertisers will be there, too, and I hope you’ll stop by and check out their services.

Sanders

Sanders

The family of the late JIM SANDERS is planning a private memorial service for the well respected former ND. Jim died earlier this week at the age of 68 from complications from COPD. During his career, he was an ND in San Jose/San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Indianapolis, Columbus, OH, and Portland, ME. He also worked as a reporter in Orlando and other markets.

It’s often a cliche, but Jim was much loved by those who knew him and worked with him.

There was this on-air tribute by the sports director of Jim’s former station in San Diego, KNSD-TV.

SUZANNE RICO, who worked for Jim in both Sacramento and San Diego, called Jim ‘her greatest boss ever’ in this post on her website.

Longtime news director and general manager BILL BAUMAN competed with Jim for stories when both were reporters at the same Orlando station. He sent me two anecdotes, one from the newsroom, and one from Jim’s service in Vietnam.

Finally, this post from Facebook from Jim’s son, COLLIN SANDERS.

Wednesday, September 9, 2015 UPDATE:

A new ND in the #4 market, and some new information on the passing of longtime news director JIM SANDERS.

Cronan

Cronan

MARGARET CRONAN has been named VP and News Director for KYW-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Philadelphia. It’s a return to KYW for Margaret, who was an EP there in the mid-90’s.

Margaret’s a former ND for WBAL-TV in Baltimore and WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach (both Hearst stations). She left Baltimore in 2003 for a variety of jobs outside of a TV newsroom. Those are outlined in her Linkedin bio, which is here. She is currently the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer for a Philadelphia law firm.

The Philadelphia Business Journal has more.

At KYW, she replaces SUSAN SCHILLER who left in May after 14 years as ND at KYW, and almost 40 years working for CBS.

I’m told by someone close to the family of the late JIM SANDERS that it might be a few weeks before a memorial service is scheduled. We told you yesterday that Jim had died over the weekend in San Diego. He retired in 2007 for health reasons after serving as an ND in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Indianapolis, and Columbus, OH.

One of those stations…KSND-TV in San Diego…paid tribute to him on air as you can see by clicking here.

It’s a busy week already. We’ll have a full newsletter later this week!

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, September 9, 2015 UPDATE:

KNSD-TV in San Diego aired this tribute to its former News Director, JIM SANDERS.

We told you below that Jim died over the weekend after a long illness.

I’ll post more information here when it becomes available.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 UPDATE:

Several items of note in this UPDATE.

Sanders

Sanders

Sadly, we begin with the death of longtime News Director JIM SANDERS.

Jim died over the weekend in San Diego, but I have few other details. He was ND at KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco when he collapsed in the newsroom in 2007, and retired shortly there after. During his career, he was an ND in San Diego, Sacramento, Indianapolis, and Columbus, OH.

When I get additional details, I’ll update this website.

By now, most of you likely already know about the latest station group deal which saw Media General acquire Meredith. The new company (Meredith Media General) will have to dispose of stations in six markets where there are overlaps: Portland, OR, Hartford, Nashville, Greenville/Ashville/Spartanburg, Mobile/Pensacola, and Springfield, MA. More from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, which has a nice map of the markets in which the combined company will own stations.

Hyvonen

Hyvonen

There’s a new ND in Cincinnati. STEVE HYVONEN returns to Ohio as the next ND for Raycom Media’s WXIX-TV, the FOX affiliate there. He most recently spent seven years as ND for Graham Media’s WKMG-TV in Orlando, and has been an ND in Cleveland and Birmingham. More in this memo to the staff from GM DEBBIE BUSH.

Finally, a clarification from Sunday’s newsletter for those of you interested in the WVNS-TV news director opening. There was a typo in the email address to which you should apply. The correct address for GM AL SANDUBRAE is asandubrae@wvnstv.com

More later!

Greetings:

I hope you’re enjoying a great holiday weekend.

THREE newly named news directors are probably off today, the perk of being the boss! And to my knowledge, there are NO new openings. Those changes, along with the closing of a news department which was on our list of open ND jobs, drops out count of open jobs to 30.

TWO of those open jobs are featured among the FOUR Paid Help Wanted Ads this week.

(And be sure to check out the eye-catching ad for the ND job at a New Mexico powerhouse.)

We also welcome back ACCUWEATHER as an advertiser. Check out their ad below, and visit them at the EIJ conference later this month in Orlando.

We have an obituary for a longtime Los Angeles news executive who spent three years as an ND there.

And we have some interesting items in Names in the News, including new jobs for two former NDs.

Take a break from your Labor Day celebration and read on!

August 28, 2015

Monday, August 31, 2015 UPDATE:

Two open news directors in top 40 (okay, top 41) markets have been filled, both by the promotion of longtime employees to the top job.

McGinley

McGinley

In Orlando, ALLISON McGINLEY has been named ND for WKMG-TV, the  Graham Media owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the interim ND since STEVE HYVONEN departed in July after seven years as ND, shortly after the arrival of new GM JEFF HOFFMAN.

Allison has worked at the station for 22 years, beginning as a producer and working her way up to EP of Special Projects. Her Linkedin page details that career path, and TV columnist HAL BOEDEKER of the Orlando Sentinel has more on her promotion.

And at KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, another longtime station employee moves up, as TERRI FOLEY has been promoted to news director for this newly-acquired by Nexstar CBS affiliate. She replaces RON COMINGS who left the station in June after nine years as ND. Terri first joined the station in 1986 as a newsroom coordinator, has held a variety of jobs, and has been the Managing Editor/Assistant ND for the last eight years.

More in this memo sent to the staff by newly installed General Manager LISA HOWFIELD.

Have a great week, and we’ll see you later with our full report.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

WDBJ Memorial

There is so little I can add to the volumes of coverage of this week’s tragedy involving two journalists from WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, but we do have something you won’t see anywhere else.

Before we get to that, I will repeat what I’ve heard from many of you, and that’s the admiration and respect everyone has expressed for the performance of General Manager JEFFREY MARKS and his entire staff under the most difficult circumstances.

Full disclosure: Jeff and I have been friends for more than 25 years. I was an at large member of the RTNDA Board of Directors during Jeff’s term as President.

Jeff wrote a remembrance late this afternoon, specifically for you, his fellow broadcasters who read this newsletter.

You can read it here.

Take a moment to check out the WDJB coverage on it’s website: http://www.wdbj7.com.

The Roanoke Times also has extensive coverage at http://www.roanoke.com

Finally, a fund has been set up for the families of ADAM WARD and ALISON PARKER. You can learn more about it and contribute here.

On, now, to our normal business.

The news director hiring binge continues. For the second consecutive week, there were FOUR open positions filled (one in a top five market), with just ONE new opening. Those changes leave our always unofficial count of open jobs to 33.

There are lots of items in Names in the News, including a promotion for the daughter of a legendary news executive. And speaking of legendary, there are two obituaries for people who many would call legendary, as well.

FIVE help wanted ads are in this week’s edition, if you’re on the hunt for a new job.

And we welcome back advertiser Weather Metrics, whose ad is below. The company will be exhibiting at the EIJ/RTDNA/SPJ/NAHJ conference in Orlando next month. Please stop by and thank them for their support.

Obituaries:

Legendary WWL-TV (New Orleans) General Manager MICHAEL EARLY died this week at the age of 99. He retired from the station in 1998 at the age of 82. This obituary explains why EVERYONE at the station always…and only…called him Mr. Early.

He wasn’t a news director or a general manager, but he appeared on dozens of local newscasts, as well as the Today Show and NBC Nightly News. DR. JAMES ‘RED’ DUKE was a pioneering physician in Texas who died this week at the age of 86. As a fourth year surgery resident, he was in Parkland Hospital on November 22, 1963, and treated then Texas Governor JOHN CONNALLY, who was shot along with President JOHN KENNEDY. The New York Times examines his remarkable career and includes a link to some of his TV work.

Situations Wanted:

We offer a free situations wanted ad to news managers who are looking for a new opportunity. If you’d like to state your case to a well targeted audience, email me an item (max. 150 words). You may include a link to a website, an email address, and a photo. You must include your name. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Names in the News…and other things:

A second generation news manager has been named Assistant News Director for WCBS-TV in New York. NICOLE TINDIGLIA had been the Assignment Manager for this CBS o-and-o, and has worked her way up from desk assistant. Her father was RON TINDIGLIA, a legendary news executive who died of lung cancer in 1997 at the age of 51.
This New York Times obituary outlines his career.
