Thursday, June 18 UPDATE:

Marren

Marren

COLEEN MARREN has been named News Director for CBS’s KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.  Coleen spent almost nine years as the ND for WCVB-TV in Boston before leaving the station last December.  She replaces JOHN VERRILLI who left KDKA-TV earlier this year to become ND for WBZ-TV in Boston.  More on this story in Friday’s full update.

Monday, June 15 UPDATE:

Kevin Finch

Kevin Finch

KEVIN FINCH, news director of the CBS affiliate in Indianapolis, WISH-TV, has resigned to take a position with a documentary producer.  More details in next week’s report.

Greetings:

Welcome to a new look for my website and the newsletter.  It’s still a work in progress.  We’ll be adding a search function soon that allows you to delve into our archives, and hopefully we’ll be able to add some new features.

Due to the switch to this new look, last week’s newsletter was updated late and was only online for a short time.  If you missed it, you can check it out by clicking the link to your right for June 8, 2009.

Openings in large markets (like the largest!) and small markets highlight this slightly delayed edition of your weekly report covering news director and news manager movement.

In all, there are  THREE new openings and  TWO new news directors to tell you about.

One of those new NDs is returning to the ND chair after years away from his time as an ND in several top ten markets.

These changes mean there are now  19 stations looking for a new news director.

Also this week, an EP returns to a New York City station, and the first grandchild for a one-time news director who’s been teaching for more than 20 years.

All that and more following this week’s change:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WNBC-TV, New York, NY…VICKIE BURNS has been named VP of Content & Audience Development for NBC Local Media New York.  She’s charged with developing audience for all the WNBC platforms.  She will continue to oversee the news operation until her successor is named.  She’s been the ND here for just over a year, and previously spent more than four years as ND at sister-NBC-o-and-o WRC-TV in Washington.

WLNS-TV, Lansing, MI…PHIL HENDRIX has left this Young Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate. He’s been the ND for the last six years, and has also worked in Detroit and Flint.

WNCT-TV, Greenville, NC…ADAM HENNING is leaving this Media General owned CBS affiliate to become ND for WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL.  He’s been the ND here since October, 2007.  More on Adam and his new job below.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WPTY/WLMT-TV, Memphis, TN…veteran News Director PETE JACOBUS starts Monday as the new ND for this Newport TV-owned ABC/CW duopoly.  Pete most recently has been working as VP/North American Television for Frank N. Magid Associates.  Earlier in his career Pete served as ND in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Detroit and San Diego, and also served as a VP for ABC News.  In Memphis, he replaces JIM TURPIN who has left the station after seven years as ND.  Jim’s also been an ND in Norfolk, Wichita, Moline, IL, and Ft. Smith, AR.

WAFF-TV, Huntsville, AL...as mentioned above, ADAM HENNING will be the next News Director for this Raycom-owned NBC affiliate.  Adam is currently the ND at WNCT-TV in Greenville, NC, and has previously been an ND in Wilmington, NC, and Gainesville, FL.  At WAFF-TV, he replaces MIMI STRAWN who left the station in April after six months as ND to return to New Orleans for family reasons.  Adam becomes the fourth ND here in just over two years.

Greetings:

Let’s all raise a toast to the good people at KOBI-TV in Medford, OR, where a new news director was hired this week. Without that hire, I would have had NO new ND moves to report, for the first time in the 13+ years I’ve generated this report.

Fortunately I’ve been spared that indignity, and you’ve been spared me whining about it.

That one move reduces the number of open ND jobs to just 17 which regular readers will know is about the smallest number ever.

But there’s much more!

We have lots of names in the news this week, including new jobs for a former Chicago ND and a former Florida news director.

If you’re looking for a new job, we’ll tell you about a Wisconsin station looking for a new EP. And there are a few other items in Names in the News, as well.

Sadly, we also have two obituaries: one for the Executive Director of a national journalism organization, the other for the father of a Kentucky ND.

All that and more following this week’s change:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

None that I know of.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KOBI-TV, Medford, ORJULIE AKINS returns to Medford as the next ND for this NBC affiliate. Earlier in her career she was the ND at KDRV-TV in Medford. She’s also been an ND in Las Vegas and Fresno At KOBI, she replaces BILL KELLY who left the station earlier this year to resume his career as an on-air meteorologist.

OBITUARIES:

Terry Harper

Terry Harper

The executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists, TERRY HARPER, died June 2nd after battling brain cancer. He was just 45 years old. You can learn more about Terry, including a link to a final blog he instructed his wife to post after he died, by going to the SPJ website.

And I’m sorry to tell you that BRYAN ELDRIDGE, father of WAVE-TV (Louisville) ND LEE ELDRIDGE, died last month at the age of 84. Mr. Eldridge suffered from Alzheimer’s. In addition to Lee, he is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Virginia, and three other children. You can read more in this obituary. And your kind note of sympathy which reach Lee at: leldridge@wave3.com

NAMES in the NEWS:

One time Chicago ND (WLS-TV) and veteran Los Angeles news Manager JIM HATTENDORF is joining MBI Media in Covina, CA, as VP of Operations. MBI Media is a strategic communications company.

John Emmert

John Emmert

JOHN EMMERT is moving north to become Managing Editor for WRTV, the ABC affiliate here in Indianapolis.  John most recently was Director of Technology and Special Projects for WINK-TV in Ft. Myers, where earlier he had served two stints as News Director.  He’s also been a news director in West Palm Beach, and has worked in New York, Detroit, Cleveland, Miami, and Waterloo, IA.

WSOC-TV in Charlotte has a new EP and 11:00 producer. It’s MIKE MACIEJEWSKI who has been working at WTXF-TV in Philadelphia. He’s also worked in Baltimore and Buffalo as a producer, and a reporter and photographer in Buffalo and Illinois.

TRAVIS GALLEY is the new EP for Sports for Griffin Communications, which owns the CBS affiliates in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. He had been the EP at Tribune’s Washington Bureau until it closed last March. Travis has also worked Dallas, Albuquerque, and El Paso. It’s a return for Travis on two fronts: the move brings him closer to his hometown of Dallas, and he also returns to sports where he began his career.

Finally, congratulations to News 12 Connecticut News Director and Anchor TOM APPLEBY on his 25th year in those roles. A release from the station says he’s the longest serving broadcaster with the same station in the state.

June 1, 2009

Greetings:

We’re a little delayed with this week’s report due to travel, but we do have several things of interest to tell you about.

THREE new news directors were named since our last report, and there’s just ONE new opening. That brings the number of stations with an open ND position to 18, according to my unscientific figures.

If you’re looking for a new job, be sure to check out out paid ad for an EP in “The Biggest Little City in the World”.

Also this week:

News about a former California ND who’s recovering from a gunshot wound. There’s an obituary for a one-time Kentucky ND, and…on the bright side…a new Assistant ND at an Albany, NY, station.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

KTEN-TV, Denison, TX…this Lockwood Broadcasting owned NBC station is advertising for a new ND. STEVE KORIOTH has been the ND here for almost four years. He’d previously worked in Huntsville, Tucson, Dallas and Chicago.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KPTV/KPDX, Portland, OR…COREY HANSON has been promoted to News Director for this Meredith Broadcasting owned FOX/MyNetworkTV affiliate. She’s been the EP of Special Projects, and has also worked as EP and Creative Services Director there. Corey replaces PATRICK McCREERY who was promoted to GM last October.

WMAR-TV, Baltimore, MD…KELLY GROFT will be the next ND for this Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate. She’s currently the Assistant ND here and has been at the station almost ten years in a variety of roles, including producer, Executive Producer, and Ass’t. ND. She replaces PEGGY PHILLIP who is moving to another Scripps station after one year as ND here. More on that in the next entry. (And apologies to Kelly, whose last name I misspelled in an emailed ND List UPDATE earlier this week.)

KSHB-TV, Kansas City, MO…as noted above, PEGGY PHILLIP is moving from Scripps’ WMAR-TV in Baltimore to become ND for this Scripps-owned NBC affiliate. The move allows her to be closer to her parents in South Dakota. In addition to one year as ND in Baltimore, Peggy’s also been an ND in Memphis, Syracuse, and Tulsa. She’s also worked in Reno, Miami, Boston and Chicago. At KSHB, Peggy replaces RICK ILER who left the station in March after almost a year and a half as ND.

May 24, 2009

Greetings:

Welcome to the Indy 500 edition of your weekly newsletter.

Lots to tell you about this week.

There are THREE new NDs to tell you about, and we answer the question of where Fresno ND JIM HOLLAND is headed. You’ll remember we told you last week that Jim was leaving KGPE-TV but couldn’t yet say where he was headed. Now we know, and you’ll find that below.

Our infrequent category: Same Old News Director Named makes its second appearance. We’ll explain.

And there are NO new ND openings that I am aware of, leaving the number of open news director jobs at 19.

We do have a new ad this week: for an EP in “The Biggest Little City in the World”. And we’re repeating last week’s ad for a company whose product can help you automate some of your news production needs.

Also this week:

I’m sorry to share an obituary of a Grand Rapids (MI) producer who died last Friday after a long cancer fight.

On the bright side, one former and one current ND are headed to their state Broadcaster Halls of Fame. And we have a few new news management hires to tell you about.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

None that I know of.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KWWL-TV, Waterloo, IA…NATE LEDING has been promoted to News Director for this Quincy Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. Nate’s been the EP there since last August, and has served as the interim ND since J.J. MURRAY left the station in February after eight months as ND. Nate’s a former ND in Alexandria, MN, and has also worked in Columbia, SC, Minneapolis, Phoenix, and for ESPN. He becomes the fourth ND in three years at KWWL.

KCEN-TV, Waco/Temple, TX…we told you last week that JIM HOLLAND was leaving KGPE-TV in Fresno for a job-to-be-announced-later. Well, later is now. Jim will be the next ND for this NBC affiliate, newly acquired by London Broadcasting. And that’s the connection: London Broadcasting is owned by Terry London, who ran Gaylord Broadcasting when Jim was ND for then-Gaylord-owned CBS affiliate KTVT-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Jim replaces DON BRADLEY who has left the station after two years as ND.

KWQC-TV, Davenport, IA…DENISE KILLIAN is the new ND for this Young Broadcasting-owned NBC affiliate. She’s been the Interim ND there since MIKE WRIGHT left the station in March after less than a year as ND. Denise had been the Assistant ND for Young’s WTEN-TV in Albany, NY and also was the EP for Young’s WKRN-TV in Nashville. She becomes the fourth ND in five years here, and the third in 18 months.

SAME OLD NEWS DIRECTOR NAMED:

WOI-TV, Des Moines/Ames, IA…we’re happy to tell you that SCOTT FREDERICK will continue as ND for this Citadel Communications owned ABC affiliate. We told you in March that, due to financial considerations, Scott would be replaced by Citadel’s VP/News, AL SANDUBRAE. Now Al passes along the good news that Scott will remain on the job, and Al will continue as VP of News.

SPENCE KENARD, former ND at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, was inducted into the Utah Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In addition to his long tenure at KSL, Spence was also the longtime voice (or narrator) of the Morgan Tabernacle Choir and a past RTNDA chair.

Congrats, also, to KVVU-TV ND ADAM P. BRADSHAW who will be inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Adam’s been the ND at KVVU for three years: an earlier stint at KVBC-TV in Las Vegas helped him meet the minimum five years of service in Nevada to be eligible. Adam’s been an ND in Salt Lake City and Rochester, NY, and has also worked in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Longtime Ohio newsman STEW HIRSCH is back in the Buckeye State and back on an Assignment Desk. Stew’s the new Assignment Manager at WLWT-TV in Cincinnati. That reunites him with station ND BRENNAN DONNELLAN: they worked together at WBNS-TV about 20 years ago. Stew is a former ND for WAFF-TV in Huntsville, and also worked in Raleigh in addition to three different Columbus stations.

ROB MACHADO heads west…WAY west…to become EP for KITV, the Hearst-Argyle owned ABC affiliate in Honolulu. Rob had been the morning EP for Belo’s KMOV-TV in St. Louis. He’s also worked in Orlando, Miami, Tampa, and Raleigh.

Apologies to HELEN SWENSON, whose title I botched last week in reporting her new job at The Weather Channel. The correct title is VP of Live Programming. Helen, of course, is a former ND in Seattle and West Palm Beach who most recently worked as a consultant for Frank N. Magid Associates.
