Monday, June 25, 2018 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

One of the largest market news director openings on our list has been filled today.

Harris

Harris

JEFF HARRIS is headed to Chicago as news director for CBS’s WBBM-TV. Jeff is currently the ND for Scripps’ WEWS-TV in Cleveland, a position he’s held since late 2014 . Before returning to his hometown of Cleveland, Jeff was the ND at Scripps’ KMGH-TV in Denver for six years.

Jeff worked at WEWS earlier in his career as a producer before leaving for his first stint at KMGH. He left Denver for four years at KPIX-TV in San Francisco before returning to KMGH as ND.

In Chicago, he replaces JEFF KIERNAN who left in March to return to Milwaukee as Senior Director of Local Content for Scripps’ WTMJ-TV. Jeff spent almost nine years as ND in Cleveland.

A busy day, with TWO updates. Who knows what the rest of the week will bring!

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, June 25, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another day, another broadcasting mega-deal, as Gray Television is combining with Raycom Media.

The result, as detailed in this news release:

  • 142 full-power television stations serving 92 markets, the third largest portfolio of stations and markets in the country.

Raycom’s current CEO, PAT LaPLATNEY will become Gray’s President and Co-Chief Executive Officer, while HILTON HOWELL, currently the top man at Gray, will become Co-CEO and Executive Chairman.

There are NINE markets where both companies own stations. The news release (linked above) explains that they will sell stations in those markets, rather than request a waiver. And there’s a handy-dandy chart explaining which stations will be sold.

Raycom is employee owned, while Gray is publicly traded. In early trading, Gray’s stock is up about than 10 percent.

I’m sure you’ll see much more coverage of this deal in the hours and days ahead.

regards,

Rick Gevers

KCCI-TV News Director DAVE BUSIEK has been inducted into the Iowa Broadcasting Hall of Fame. And no wonder…he’s been at the Hearst owned CBS affiliate for almost 40 years, and news director for about 30. Dave is a past RTDNA chair, as well.

550,000 FEET of news film. That’s what’s being digitized at a Pennsylvania company, all from KATV in Little Rock. The finished product will be available at the Pryor Center in Fayetteville. Wouldn’t it be great if every station could find a way (and a donor, most likely) to save that history? More from the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Cincinnati Magazine takes a lengthy look at the challenges facing the E. W. Scripps company, which says it’s banking on old-fashioned journalism to find success in a new age for media. It an interesting read.

June 17, 2018

Greetings:

Great to see an ever growing contingent of broadcasters at the IRE conference which ended this morning in Orlando. And there were more broadcasters there recruiting than I’ve seen in the past. Enjoyed getting to say hi to many of you.

Perhaps that group of managers at the conference explains a rather slow week of news director and news manager activity. There’s ONE new news director this week, and, as far as I know, NO new openings.

We do have ONE new paid help wanted ad for a top 25 market ND job, as well as an ad for an EP opening in a top 10 market.

It’s our sad duty to report the passing of a longtime broadcasting consultant who also wrote…and performed original songs…for a legendary TV show. That obituary is below.

There’s ONE new GM to tell you about, ONE veteran news manager headed to a top five market, a local business journal spends a lot of space looking at news sets, and we have details about the son of a veteran news executive who has started his own….circus.

All that and more below.

Newly Named News Director:

Brad Hyatt

Hyatt

WIS-TV, Columbia, SC…BRAD HYATT has been promoted to news director for this Raycom Media owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the Assistant ND since 2016 and interim ND for the past three months. GM LYLE SCHULZE shared the news with the staff. Brad’s spent most of his career at Raycom’s WBTV in Charlotte and replaces MARK LITTLE here: Mark is now ND at Raycom’s WLBT/WDBD-TV in Jackson, MS.

Obituary:

Brown

I’m sorry to report the death of longtime consultant BILL BROWN. Bill died May 29th at the age of 67 after a battle with cancer. While many of you knew Bill as a consultant with several companies, you probably did not know that he composed and performed original music for Sesame Street! More on Bill’s life and career (including a link to one of those songs) in this obituary written for us by BARRY NASH, with whom Bill partnered to launch Media and Marketing, which later became The Coaching Company.

CHUCK CARTER returns home to Philadelphia as EP for Fox’s WTXF-TV. He had been the Assistant News Director for WTNH-TV in Hartford/New Haven. Earlier in his career, Chuck was an ND for a WB affiliate in Philadelphia. His Linkedin page details his complete career.

The Indianapolis Business Journal looks at news sets in a lengthy article triggered by WISH-TV’s new set. That Nexstar owned station says it spent $1.5 million on the new digs.

We rarely report on the activities of sons and daughters of broadcasters in this space, but thought we’d make an exception and share this story from today’s CBS Sunday Morning. KEVIN VERNARDOS, son of the late CBS News executive LANE VERNARDOS, was profiled, specifically the circus he has started by himself. And Lane is mentioned…and shown…in the story, as he followed his son during Kevin’s career with Barnum and Bailey.

June 10, 2018

Greetings:

I hope to see many of you at this year’s IRE conference in Orlando.

If we connect there, we could discuss this week’s TWO new news directors. But why would we?

Or we could talk about this week’s TWO new openings…but, again, why?

Or we could talk about the list of openings, which stands at 31. But I’d like to think there are other weighty issues to consider.

Like our FIVE paid help wanted ads this week. THREE of those ads are for news director openings.

And there’s good stuff in Names in the News…including a handful of news managers on the move and some items about former NDs, one a well-known network correspondent.

TWO GM moves this week…both involve former NDs.

Read on and I’ll see you in Orlando.

Davis

   Davis

JOEL DAVIS will be the next GM for WRAL/WRAZ-TV (NBC/FOX) in Raleigh, NC. He’s currently GM for Scripps’ KGTV in San Diego, a job he’s held since April, 2016. Joel previously had been station manager and news director for that ABC affiliate.

WRAL’s news release announcing his appointment is here.

In addition to KGTV, Joel’s been an ND in Fresno (KFSN-TV) and Bakersfield (KBAK-TV), served as managing editor for WFTV in Orlando, and worked as a reporter and anchor in Columbus, OH, and Waterloo, IA.

Monday, June 4, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

We’re always pleased to share the news of a news director moving to a general manager’s job, and that’s the case in this UPDATE.

Moreno

Moreno

Congratulations to CHRISTY MORENO who’s been named general manager of Tegna’s WHAS-TV (ABC) in Louisville. Here’s the full story from the station’s website.

Christy’s been the ND of Tegna’s KUSA-TV in Denver for more than three years and earlier spent 2 1/2 years as ND of Tegna’s WBIR-TV in Knoxville. She’s a former Assistant ND at KENS-TV in San Antonio and an EP for KRIV-TV in Houston, where she began as a producer. She’s also worked for a second Houston station and in Wichita Falls.

At WHAS she replaces LINDA DANNA who is retiring.

Last week was busy…we’ll see if this week shapes up that way, too.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

As you know from our FOUR midweek UPDATES, it’s been a busy week and that translates to a full newsletter.

FOUR newly named news directors, THREE of those in network owned stations in the top 20 markets. And there are FOUR new openings, TWO in large market network o-and-o’s.

Of note: each of the four new news directors were either promoted or are returning to stations at which they had previously worked.

So our list of ND openings grows ever so slightly to 30.

FOUR of those openings are featured among our SIX paid help wanted ads this week.

Lots of items in Names in the News, including new jobs for TWO former news directors. And we have TWO obituaries as well.

DdgFull-4-21-18

Newly Named News Directors:

Matthews

Matthews

WABC-TV, New York, NY…it was a busy week for UPDATES, including news of CHAD MATTHEWS promotion to news director for this ABC o-and-o. Chad’s been the Assistant ND here for the last year, spent five years before that as the AND at WTVJ-TV in Miami, and worked for WABC for 12 years in a variety of roles. Here’s the station’s report on the move. Chad replaces CAMILLE EDWARDS who left in March after more than five years as ND.

Dobson

Dobson

WBTS-TV, Boston, MA…another UDPATE told you of BEN DOBSON’s return to this NBC owned station (branded as NBC Boston) as news director. Ben’s been the ND for sister o-and-o WVIT-TV in Hartford for the past two years but formerly worked in this building for necn (New England Cable News), which he’ll oversee in this new job. Here’s the email from GM MIKE ST. PETER to the staff. Ben replaces KENNY PLOTNIK who left the station in April.

Dello Stritto

Dello Stritto

KOVR/KMAX-TV, Sacramento, CA…still another UDPATE told you of another return: this of MIKE DELLO STRITTO’s appointment as ND for the CBS owned duopoly. Here’s the memo from GM JAY HOWELL to the staff, in which you’ll learn of Mike’s previous work in Sacramento. He left there to move to CBS’s KPIX-TV as Managing Editor, and then on to Vegas. Ironically, the man he’s replacing, TOM BELL, left to take a job at KVVU-TV in Las Vegas after five years as ND.

Chavez

Chavez

KTVB-TV, Boise, ID…LISA CHAVEZ has been promoted to Director of Content for this Tegna owned operation. She first joined the station in 2000 as a news photographer and advanced to become assignment manager and then digital content manager. Lisa replaces KATE MORRIS who was promoted to general manager in January after 6+ years as news director here.

Sam-Decision18Full-5-28-18

New News Director Openings:

Rosenheim

Rosenheim

KPIX-TV, San Francisco, CA…DAN ROSENHEIM is retiring after 18 years as ND for this CBS owned station (and 22 years as an ND in San Francisco: he ran KRON-TV’s newsroom before moving to KPIX). Pretty good run for a guy whose background was in newspapers. He was the Managing Editor (and City Editor before that) of the San Francisco Chronicle and earlier worked for two Chicago newspapers. (And that gives us a reason to share one of our favorite stories: this 1986 classic from old friend WAYNE FREEDMAN comparing TV news to the print version. Your investment of a few minutes will bring a smile.)

WVIT-TV, Hartford, CT…BEN DOBSON is moving within NBC from one owned station not another with his move to WBTS-TV in Boston. We first reported that to you on Thursday and have more details above.

KTNV-TV, Las Vegas, NV…as noted above (and reported in our UPDATE on Wednesday) MIKE DELLO STRITTO is returning to Sacramento as news director for KOVR/KMAX-TV. Mike spent almost three years as ND at this Scripps/ABC affiliate.

WAOW-TV, Wausau, WI…this Quincy owned ABC affiliate has reopened its search for a new news director. We told you a few weeks ago that MICHELE GORS would be the next ND here. Unfortunately a family situation developed that prevented Michele from making the move. You can learn more about the opportunity in the paid help wanted ad below.
