A busy week, with FOUR new news directors whose moves created THREE of our FIVE new ND openings.

That means our list of open ND jobs now stands at 34.

We have TWO Paid Help Wanted ads for management jobs in medium markets, and it’s been almost a year since someone has taken advantage of our FREE Situations Wanted ad, but we have such a posting below.

We have a few news managers on the move.

Gray Television named FOUR new general managers this week, a longtime Phoenix GM has announced his retirement, and a GM in waiting moves to Houston.

Newly Named News Directors:

WFSB-TV, Hartford, CT…we first told you on Thursday that KEITH CONNORS was going across the market to become the ND for this Meredith owned CBS affiliate. He’s currently the ND for Nexstar’s WTNH-TV in New Haven. More here. Keith’s been ND at WTNH for more than three years, and has had ND jobs in Houston, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Norfolk and Rochester, NY. He’s also worked in Nashville and Toledo. (Full disclosure, I hired him at WTOL-TV as a producer.) Keith replaces DANA NEVES who was promoted to GM back in March. She was ND there for 12 years.

WBNS-TV, Columbus, OH…STEVE KOLES heads south from WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids to become the next Director of News and Digital Content for this Dispatch owned CBS affiliate. Learn more in this news release. Steve’s been the ND at WWMT for 7 1/2 years, and has also worked in Providence, Tulsa, Baltimore, and Norfolk. At WBNS, he replaces KELLY FRANK who left in May after three years as ND.

WTOC-TV, Savannah, GA…BARI SOASH stays within Raycom as she takes over the news department for this CBS affiliate. Here’s the staff email from GM LARRY SILBERMANN. Bari is currently the ND for Raycom’s WALB-TV in Albany, GA, where she’s been for 3+ years. She’s also worked for Raycom stations in Toledo and Charlotte, and in Lansing, MI. She replaces SCOTT GALLOWAY who spent three years as ND here, and a total of 32 years for Raycom, mostly at WFIE-TV in Evansville.

WAOW-TV, Wausau, WI…KEVIN CARPENTER will be the next ND for this Quincy Media owned ABC affiliate. Details in this news release. He’s been the Director of Digital Operations at Chicago’s WLS-TV for the past 16 years, and has also worked as a reporter in Flint, MI, and Burlington, VT. Kevin replaces MARK DURHAM who left the station in January after two years.

New News Director Openings:

KTVT-TV, Ft. Worth/Dallas, TX…you learned in our UPDATE on Monday that ANDREA PARQUET-TAYLOR has been promoted to VP/Station Manager for this CBS o-and-o. The station issued this news release. Andrea has been the ND here since February, 2017, and has run newsrooms in Detroit, Raleigh (two stations) and Baltimore.

WTNH-TV, New Haven/Hartford, CT…we told you above that KEITH CONNORS has left this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate to become ND for WFSB-TV, the Meredith owned CBS affiliate in Hartford. Keith was ND here for more than three years.

Liz has been the ND for more than ten years and has worked here for 15.

WALB-TV, Albany, GA…you already know that BARI SOASH is leaving this Raycom station to become ND for a sister-Raycom-station, WTOC-TV in Savannah, GA. (You know that because you read it above.) She’s been the ND here for 3+ years.

The WINK Senior Executive Producer will oversee the development and training of producers and Executive Producers at Southwest Florida’s leading news operation. WINK is looking for a leader capable of teaching and mentoring producers, as well as developing Executive Producers. Passion is important for this role, but more important is a sense of purpose. The top candidate will be someone who demonstrates the ability to lead and teach.

Creativity, strong news judgment, superb writing skills and excellent showcasing and production skills are a must. The Sr. EP oversees all activities that go into the creation of the on-air product, which includes Executive Producers, Producers and Associate Producers.

Integrating social media into the newscasts is an emerging growth area in which the Sr. EP must embrace and lead. DEREK SCHNELL has been promoted to Assistant News Director for Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento. He had been an EP there, and is now one of two AND’s for that NBC station.

Two management promotions at Sinclair’s WKEF-TV in Dayton: BECKY GULDEN becomes Assistant ND. She had been an EP there. And REBA CHENOWETH becomes an EP, she had been the Senior News Producer.

Munson

Longtime General Manager ED MUNSON is retiring from his gig as GM for Meredith’s Phoenix’s duopoly, KPHO/KTVK-TV. He’ll step down in September after 10 years in Phoenix. Learn more about Ed’s career and past positions in this news release.

Gray Television named four new general managers this week. In each case, the appointments were made to replace GMs who’d held both local and regional responsibilities. They’re now free to concentrate on the regional jobs. Markets impacted: Lexington, KY, Charleston-Huntington, WV, Colorado Springs, CO, and Lansing, MI. This news release explains it all.

BOBBY SPRINGER, currently the director of advertising and promotion for KUSA-TV in Denver, heads to sister Tegna station KHOU-TV as VP/Station Manager, and is slated to ascend to the top job when SUSAN McELDOON retires in January 2019.

It’s been exactly one year to the day since we last reported a cross-town news director move.

Connors

And that’s what we have today, with news that KEITH CONNORS will be the next news director for Meredith’s WFSB-TV (CBS) in Hartford/New Haven. Keith is currently the ND for the market’s ABC affiliate, Nexstar’s WTNH-TV, where he’s been in charge for almost 3 1/2 years.

Here’s the WFSB news release about Keith’s hire.

Keith’s been an ND in Indianapolis, Houston, Charlotte, Norfolk, and Rochester, NY, and also worked in Nashville and Toledo, where I hired him as a producer at WTOL-TV.

At WFSB, he succeeds DANA NEVES who was promoted to General Manager (and thus will be Keith’s new boss) in March after 12 years as ND.

Oh, and for those of you wondering? The ‘one year ago today’ cross town move was that of HOLLY GAUNTT, who left KDVR-TV (FOX) in Denver to become ND for KMGH-TV (ABC).

Congratulations to two news directors moving into station management today.

Andrea P.

ANDREA PARQUET-TAYLOR has been named Vice President/Station Manager for KTVT/KTXA-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth. She’s been the news director at this CBS owned duopoly since January, 2017, and has a long career in news. Andrea’s been an ND for two stations in Raleigh, as well as in Detroit and Baltimore. She’s also been the Assistant ND for a Houston station. CBS says it will announce her successor as news director at a later date.

And congratulations to LIZ HALTIWANGER who’s been bumped up to General Manager for Gray’s KKTV (CBS) in Colorado Springs. Liz was one of FOUR new GMs named today at Gray stations: in each case they are replacing GMs who had regional responsibilities. They will now concentrate full time on the corporate role with the title of TV Vice-Presidents. Other markets impacted were Lexington, Charleston-Huntington, and Lansing, as you’ll learn here.

After three wonderful years at KION working with an incredible, talented team, I’ve decided it’s time to switch things up and take a break. MATT GOLDBERG, currently the Assistant News Director for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, has a new job. He’s off to New York (where his fiancee lives) to become VP/Content Strategy for the NBC owned stations. Here’s the memo to the KNBC staff explaining the new role. Matt has also worked for another Los Angeles station, as well as in San Francisco (two stations) and Houston. He’s also a past president of IRE, and is still a board member for that organization.

WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach, SC, has filled its Digital Content Manager opening by promoting BRAD DICKERSON. He’s been a digital content producer for that Raycom station.

Two EP hires within Scripps:

KERO-TV in Bakersfield promoted MONICA DATTAGE. She was a producer there.

And KIVI-TV in Boise hired MARY BETH DICKSON, a former anchor and producer.

We have a few more details about BOB SULLIVAN‘s new job. We reported last week that he was leaving Tegna, where he was Vice President/Programming, for a new job as General Manager of Sneaky Big Productions. Bob kindly sent along a note explaining his new responsibilities and (this may surprise you) who owns Sneaky Big.  It’s a name you’ll likely recognize.

Glad to report that longtime WILX-TV (Lansing) News Director KEVIN RAGAN continues to recover from a stroke he suffered 18 months ago. The station aired this follow up report. Kevin was ND at the now-owned-by-Gray station for more than 19 years, and has been an ND in Wichita and Greenville, SC, and worked in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

Finally, longtime WTOL-TV (Toledo) news assignment manager FRANK SEELY was the guest of honor Friday night at a retirement party. Frank spent 32 years running the desk at that CBS affiliate. (I know: I hired him in 1986 when I was the news director there.) A tribute to Frank: the gathering was well attending by many WTOL alums, some who travelled from as far as San Francisco and Washington. The station aired this tribute to him, and among the gifts (including a watch) was a golden phone, a tribute to the many hours any good assignment editor spends with such a device pinned to his ear. Veteran broadcaster DICK REINGOLD is headed to WHEC-TV in Rochester, NY, as its next general manager. Here’s the official word. That ‘official word’ has details on Dick’s extensive background, including a GM in a number of markets, including Washington, DC. and a news director in many large markets. He replaces DEREK DALTON at this Hubbard owned NBC affiliate. Derek left to become GM for WBBM-TV in Chicago.

GENE STEINBERG has left KMIR-TV in Palm Desert after three years running that Entravsion owned NBC/Univision duopoly.

Tom served as a news director in New York and Pittsburgh, taught at Temple (his alma mater) and other universities, edited the Shoptalk newsletter, and later started his own blog, the 24/7 Newsroom.  Here’s his farewell from January 31, 2013, when he shut down the newsletter.

We start with the sad news that veteran newsman TOM PETNER died today.

I have few details, but was alerted by a kind reader to this post from Tom’s daughter on Facebook.

One of the gentlemen of our business, Tom served as an ND in New York and Pittsburgh, edited Shoptalk after DON FITZPATRICK died in 2006, and later started his own blog, the 24/7 Newsroom. He had other jobs as well: read about them on Linkedin.

I’ll update my website with details about services when I learn more.

Chicago media reporter ROBERT FEDER has more (he calls Jeff an ‘itinerant news director’). He replaces another Jeff…JEFF KIERNAN who left in March to return to Milwaukee as Director of Content for Scripps’ WTMJ-TV (NBC).

Eric has been the Assistant ND for the company’s Dallas station, WFAA-TV and has also worked in San Antonio and Denver. Linda has been at KUSA for more than 20 years. The opening(s) were created when CHRISTY MORENO was promoted to GM for Tegna’s WHAS-TV in Louisville.

KXLF/KBZK-TV, Butte, MT…we’re a few months behind in reporting that KEVIN STANFIELD is the new ND for these Cordillera Communications stations. He’s also the evening anchor and has been at the station since January. His Linkedin page has the full story of his career, which includes stops at two cities in North Dakota, Colorado and other stops. We told you in March that JOHN SCHERER was stepping down as ND after 12 years. He remains at the station as the morning producer.

He’s been ND here for just over a year, and spent a few months as the interim ND before being promoted. Jeff had been the Managing Editor at sister-Griffin station KWTV in Oklahoma City before that.

KION-TV, Monterey/Salinas, CA…DEB MONROE is leaving this NPG owned operation after about three years as ND here. (updated 7/2/18) Here’s the note she sent me:

It appears that veteran broadcaster BOB SULLIVAN has left Tegna, where he was the Senior Vice President/Programming. His Linkedin page says, as of June, 2018, he is the GM of Sneaky Big Studios, which describes itself this way: SNEAKY BIG Studios is a world-class, state-of-the-art production facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. I’ve emailed and called Bob (at possibly outdated contact information) and haven’t heard back yet. Bloomberg has a good summary of his background.

We told you earlier this week that Raycom Media and Gray Television were combining into one company. If you missed it earlier, here’s the news release including the handy list of what stations will be spun off.

In an unrelated move, Scripps is selling its Oklahoma radio stations to Griffin Communications, which owns CBS TV stations in Oklahoma and Tulsa.

And congratulations to our friends (and longtime newsletter supporters) at Devlin Design Group, which won its fifth consecutive PromaxBDA Gold award for best set. This news release is here, and the picture is below.

JAY HOWELL returns to Pittsburgh as GM for CBS o-and-o KDKA-TV. His father, JOHN, spent many years as GM for WPXI-TV there, so it’s a homecoming for John. Jay just joined CBS not quite a year ago as GM of the company’s KOVR/KMAX-TV in Sacramento. He’s a former executive with LIN media and served as a GM in two Texas markets. Monday, June 25, 2018 UPDATE #2:

Greetings:

One of the largest market news director openings on our list has been filled today.

Harris

JEFF HARRIS is headed to Chicago as news director for CBS’s WBBM-TV. Jeff is currently the ND for Scripps’ WEWS-TV in Cleveland, a position he’s held since late 2014 . Before returning to his hometown of Cleveland, Jeff was the ND at Scripps’ KMGH-TV in Denver for six years.

Jeff worked at WEWS earlier in his career as a producer before leaving for his first stint at KMGH. He left Denver for four years at KPIX-TV in San Francisco before returning to KMGH as ND.

In Chicago, he replaces JEFF KIERNAN who left in March to return to Milwaukee as Senior Director of Local Content for Scripps’ WTMJ-TV. Jeff spent almost nine years as ND in Cleveland.

A busy day, with TWO updates. Who knows what the rest of the week will bring!

Monday, June 25, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

Another day, another broadcasting mega-deal, as Gray Television is combining with Raycom Media.

The result, as detailed in this news release:

• 142 full-power television stations serving 92 markets, the third largest portfolio of stations and markets in the country.

Raycom’s current CEO, PAT LaPLATNEY will become Gray’s President and Co-Chief Executive Officer, while HILTON HOWELL, currently the top man at Gray, will become Co-CEO and Executive Chairman.

There are NINE markets where both companies own stations. The news release (linked above) explains that they will sell stations in those markets, rather than request a waiver. And there’s a handy-dandy chart explaining which stations will be sold.

Raycom is employee owned, while Gray is publicly traded. In early trading, Gray’s stock is up about than 10 percent.

I’m sure you’ll see much more coverage of this deal in the hours and days ahead.

Kay’s been an ND for WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, VA and has also worked in Tampa, Sarasota, Tallahassee, and Pensacola, FL. At WFXR she replaces ROB TOMPKINS who left the station in March after 2 1/2 years as ND.

WDTV, Bridgeport, WV…ADAM PLYLER is the new news director for this Gray Television owned CBS affiliate. More in this news release from his proud alma mater. He’s been working as a producer for WSAZ-TV in Huntington-Charleston and has worked at WOWK-TV there. NATE SMAIL has been the ND and anchor at WDTV, and his bio is still on the website. Perhaps he’s just going to anchor. (I emailed him and got no response.)

Silberstein

WETM-TV, Elmira, NY…MARK SILBERSTEIN starts Monday (June 25) as the next news director for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate. Mark most recently has been the senior producer at WNEM-TV in Flint/Saginaw, but has worked in a number of places during his career: Linkedin tells the story. BOB ROCKSTROH was the ND here before being transferred to Nexstar’s WFFF-TV in Burlington, VT.

WHIO-TV, Dayton, OH…DAVID BENNALLACK is retiring after 30 years with Cox Media, the last eleven as ND for this CBS affiliate. He also oversees the company’s radio stations in Dayton. More in this news release. Dave started with Cox at the company’s flagship, WSB-TV in Atlanta before moving to El Paso, TX, to launch a news department for KFOX-TV.

Obituary:

White

RAY WHITE, a longtime anchor and news director in Chattanooga, died June 16th at the age of 80. He actually worked at WDEF-TV three times, in the 60’s, 70,s and 80’s. Ray also served two non consecutive terms in the Tennessee House. I learned a lot about him in this column from WRCB-TV anchor DAVID CARROLL.

KCCI-TV News Director DAVE BUSIEK has been inducted into the Iowa Broadcasting Hall of Fame. And no wonder…he’s been at the Hearst owned CBS affiliate for almost 40 years, and news director for about 30. Dave is a past RTDNA chair, as well.

550,000 FEET of news film. That’s what’s being digitized at a Pennsylvania company, all from KATV in Little Rock. The finished product will be available at the Pryor Center in Fayetteville. Wouldn’t it be great if every station could find a way (and a donor, most likely) to save that history? More from the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Cincinnati Magazine takes a lengthy look at the challenges facing the E. W. Scripps company, which says it’s banking on old-fashioned journalism to find success in a new age for media. It an interesting read.
