Greetings: For reasons I can't figure out, some of you have not received this newsletter for the past two weeks. As your favorite satellite truck engineer might say, "It left here fine." But somewhere in cyberspace, the subject line disappeared before it arrived in inboxes, including mine. I suspect that may cause some issues with some spam/junk mail filters. My figures now show 20 stations with a news director opening. We have three new ads this week: two are for news director openings, and one is for an Assistant ND position. There are also two obituaries, one for the wife of a longtime ND...she was known for providing holiday meals for working newspeople. And the other is for a long-ago Spokane ND. And we have lots of Names in the News, including a new job for a well known journalist known for his insight on the internet. All that and more below: **** ***** **** NEW NEWS DIRECTORS OPENINGS: To my knowledge...none! NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED: WXXA-TV, Albany, NY...GARY LaPLANTE moves across town to take over the ND position for this Newport TV owned FOX affiliate. Gary has been the Assistant ND for WTEN-TV in Albany. He's previously worked in Boston, Providence, and Hartford. Gary replaces GENE ROSS who moved to another Newport station, WTEV/WAWS in Jacksonville in March. WEYI-TV, Clio (Flint) MI...LINDSAY MOORE has been promoted to ND for this Barrington Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. She replaces DON SHAFER, who left the station (along with about half the staff) in cutbacks last month. WGGB-TV, Springfield, MA...veteran news director DAVID BAER returns to a newsroom as ND for this Gormally Broadcasting owned ABC station. Dave's a former news director in (most recently) Portland, ME, and has also run newsrooms in Providence, Indianapolis, Buffalo, and Raleigh. She died of cancer last Sunday (May 4) at the age of 57, with family at her bedside in Reading, PA, where she and Bill lived. Bill's a former ND in Ft. Wayne, Traverse City, and Austin, MN, and also worked in Grand Rapids, MI, where he married Becki in 1979. Bill tells me she often would prepare holiday dinners for newsroom staffers who couldn't be with families on those special days. Services were held in Pennsylvania yesterday, and one is scheduled in Ft. Wayne next Friday (5/16/08). You can find more details here. He also once served on the RTNDA Board of Directors. He left the news business in 1960 for a variety of public relations positions. Read more about Patrick and his career in this detailed obituary on the RTNDA website. **** ***** **** NAMES IN THE NEWS We're a little late in reporting that former ND STEVE WASSERMAN has been named GM of Scripps' WPTV in West Palm Beach. Steve most recently was GM of Post-Newsweek's WDIV-TV in Detroit. He'd also been a GM and/or ND for PNS stations in Houston, Miami, and Jacksonville, in addition to a short stint as a news director in New York. When Steve left Detroit he said he wanted to return to warmer weather, so he's done that. JOHN HARRIS is now the Acting General Manager for WRAL-TV in Raleigh. John's a former ND there, and in Orlando, who's held a variety of jobs at the station. Another former ND, JIM HEFNER, who was the GM at WRAL, left the station earlier this week. Hefner's a former ND at WRAL and in Pittsburgh, as well. Congratulations to CORY BERGMAN who gets a new job and still gets to live in Seattle. Cory, who many of you know as the man behind lostremote.com, has been named Director of Business Development for msnbc.com. He'll be based on the Microsoft (the MS in MSNBC, in case you've forgotten) campus in Seattle. Cory has been Director of Digital Media at KING-TV in Seattle, where's he's worked since 2001. He's also worked in Modesto, CA, Sacramento, for NBC News in Burbank, and at KCPQ-TV in Seattle. JENNIFER DALE has been named EP for the startup news operation at WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach, SC.
