May 8, 2016

Greetings:

An interesting week. There are THREE new news director openings…all created by NDs taking new jobs, TWO of those in smaller markets. And those THREE people are the only ones we know taking new ND jobs this week, thus leaving our count of open ND jobs at 29.

TWO of those 29 openings are among the FIVE Paid Help Wanted ads in this week’s edition, including a new ad for a Managing Editor’s job in Houston.

We have details about the retirement of a longtime news director turned station manager in Phoenix, a story about Hearst naming a fellowship after FRED YOUNG, and a new man at the top of AP’s ENPS.

All that and more below…

New News Director Openings:

KRIV-TV, Houston, TX…as we reported earlier this week, BOB MORFORD is leaving this FOX owned station to become ND at WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL. There’s a good reason behind that, which we’ll explain below. Bob was ND here for about three years and was the Assistant ND for about a year before being bumped up.

WISH-TV, Indianapolis, IN…in another move we shared with you earlier this week, ELBERT TUCKER is leaving this CW affiliate after a year to return to his native Tennessee as ND for sister Media General-about-to-be Nexstar owned WKRN-TV in Nashville. We’ll explain more on his move below.

WLTZ-TV, Columbus, GA…ANDREA CLENNEY is leaving this SagamoreHill owned station to return to Gainesville. More on that below, too. She joined this NBC affiliate late in 2014.

Newly Named News Director:

Tucker

Tucker

WKRN-TV, Nashville, TN…as noted above, ELBERT TUCKER is moving back to Tennessee to become the ND for this ABC affiliate. (It’s currently owned by Media General but Nexstar is in the process of buying that company.) Elbert told me the move brings him closer to both his and his wife’s families. He’s been the ND for sister Media General station WISH-TV in Indianapolis for the past year, has been an ND in Columbus, OH, and Cincinnati, and has also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga. At WKRN, he replaces MATTHEW ZELKIND who left the station in March after 17 years as ND in two different times.

Morford

Morford

WAFF-TV, Huntsville, AL…BOB MORFORD joins this Raycom Media owned NBC affiliate as ND. Bob told me he’s happy to join Raycom and to be a short drive from his wife MARGARET, who lives in Nashville. (Both Bob and Margaret are Nashville natives but have commuted for most of their marriage.) WAFF GM VANESSA OUBRE told the staff in this memo. He’s been ND for KRIV-TV in Houston for the past 3+ years, and has also been an ND in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati (two stations), Knoxville, and West Palm Beach, and also worked in Columbia, MO. He replaces ADAM HENNING who spent seven years here and is now ND at WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach.

Clenney

Clenney

WGFL-TV, Gainesville, FL…ANDREA CLENNEY returns to Gainesville as news director for this Sinclair operated CBS station. She had been ND at competitor WCJB-TV for three years before leaving in late 2014 to become the news director for WLTZ-TV in Columbus, GA. She’s a former ND in Greenville, NC, and Wilmington, NC, spent more than ten years as the Senior Morning Producer for KMGH-TV in Denver, and has also worked in Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Syracuse, and Augusta, GA.

Hearst has named a journalism fellowship after its former VP/News, FRED YOUNG. Fred spent (I believe) his entire career at Hearst, starting at WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh as a go-fer, rising to news director and then general manager before moving to the corporate staff. One of the truly good guys in our business, he retired in 2008 but has kept busy as you’ll learn in this article.

Tucker

Tucker

ELBERT TUCKER is leaving WISH-TV here in Indianapolis to move to sister Media General-soon-to-be-owned-by-Nexstar WKRN-TV (ABC) in Nashville.

While some may find that unusual, Elbert’s a Tennessee native. and he told me this morning the move puts him within a short drive of his parents, his brother, and his wife’s family.

He’s been ND for this CW affiliate for about a year, and he’s also been an ND in Columbus, OH, and Cincinnati, and has also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga. His full background is on his Linkedin page.

More on a busy week in our full newsletter in a few days.

A new job for a Houston News Director in today’s UPDATE.

Morford

Morford

BOB MORFORD, who’s been the ND for Fox’s KRIV-TV since June, 2013, is leaving after the May book to become (again!) the news director for Raycom’s WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL. Bob tells me he’s excited to join Raycom and to be a short drive from his wife MARGARET, who lives in Nashville. (Both Bob and Margaret are Nashville natives.)

Here’s the memo from WAFF General Manager VANESSA OUBRE:

It’s a return to Huntsville for Bob, who was the ND at WAFF earlier in his career, a career which has seen him hold ND jobs at stations in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati (two stations), Knoxville, and West Palm Beach. He’s also worked in Columbia, MO.

At WAFF, he replaces ADAM HENNING who left after seven years as ND for this NBC affiliate. He’s now the ND for WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, FL.

As always, we’ll have more on this story and all the latest news in our full newsletter later this week.

Greetings:

Just ONE newly named ND this week…with, to the best of my knowledge, NO new openings. That drops our list of stations looking for a new news director to 28.

There are FOUR new Paid Help Wanted ads this week, with jobs available in a wide range of possibilities. That includes TWO ads for ND jobs (one in a top 15 market). There are also ads for an EP position in Seattle…and for producer opportunities in Denver.

We have an obituary for the mother of a longtime news director. A BIG promotion for a former news director at CBS, a bunch of promotions within Raycom, and FOUR GMs on the move.

Greetings:

THREE up, THREE down.

Not a baseball inning but the number of newly named and newly opened news director jobs in this week’s report. That leaves our count of open positions at 29.

We have Paid Help Wanted ads for TWO of those openings. And we also have additional information about what created two of those openings…details we didn’t have when we first added them to the list.

Awards season is upon us, and we have details about Peabodys and Regional Edward R. Murrow awards. We have details on several news management moves, on the first scholarship honoring a murdered ND, and stories about THREE GMs on the move.

There’s also an obituary for a former ND turned anchor who got his first anchor job when he went to a station to apply….for a cameraman’s position.

Finally…congratulations to our longtime sponsor Devlin Design Group, honored by Newscast Studio for the fifth consecutive year with its Set of the Year award.

New News Director Openings:

Zuber

Zuber

WDBJ-TV, Roanoke, VA…KELLY ZUBER‘s last day at this now-owned-by-Gray Television CBS affiliate will be May 6th. Her departure brings a 34 year career to an end, a career which saw her serve as reporter, producer, assignment editor, and Director of Digital Media. I’m told she may help her husband who owns a business in Roanoke. Kelly also gained national attention that she never wanted when two of her employees were killed on live TV last August.

KFVS-TV, Cape Girardeau, MO…longtime News Director MARK LITTLE is being promoted within Raycom Media to be ND for the company’s WIS-TV in Columbia, SC. More on that below.

KRNV-TV, Reno, NV…this Sinclair owned NBC affiliate is looking for a new news director to replace JASON GOODWIN. He’s left the station after less than a year as ND. He’s also been an ND in Abilene, TX, and has worked in Tulsa and Pittsburgh.

Longoria

Longoria

We have updates on two recent openings. We didn’t know the details about the opening at KIII-TV because no one at Tegna responded to our repeated inquiries. This story in the local newspaper tells us that veteran ND RICHARD LONGORIA is retiring. He has an interesting background…it’s worth a moment of your time.

And we can now confirm that KEVIN DUNAWAY has been promoted to VP/GM for Traverse City’s WWTV/WWUP-TV there. He’s been the ND since 2002.

Newly Named News Director:

Doerr

Doerr

WINK-TV, Fort Myers, FL…as we reported earlier this week in an UPDATE, TOM DOERR will be the next ND for this Fort Myers Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate. We told you when Tom left WFLD-TV in Chicago last month he wanted to return to Florida. He’s also been an ND at eight other stations, a station manager, and a consultant. At WINK, he replaces RUSS KILGORE who left the station last month after more than seven years as ND.

Little

He’s been the ND for sister Raycom station KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, MO, for more than 14 years. Mark first joined KFVS in 1999 as the Assignment Editor. A Missouri native, he also worked for KPLR-TV in St. Louis. At WIS, Mark replaces BRYAN QUEEN who left last month after 2 1/2 years as ND here.

Miller

Miller

WOAY-TV Oak Hill, WV…DAVID MILLER assumes additional duties as news director for this ABC affiliate. He also anchors the evening newscasts for the station which is owned by Thomas Broadcasting. David replaces KEITH CONNER who left the station recently after more than three years as news director.

Doerr

Doerr

TOM DOERR has been named News Director for WINK-TV, the Fort Myers Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate in…come on, guess.

(Okay, it’s in Fort Myers for those of you who are a little slow today.)

We told you in March that Tom was leaving his job as VP/News for WFLD-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Chicago, to return to Florida for family reasons.

Tom’s been a news director in eight markets (most of them large), a station manager, and a consultant for AR&D. His complete bio is on his Linkedin page.

At WINK, he replaces RUSS KILGORE who left the station in March after almost eight years as ND there.

I’m in Las Vegas for NAB, and hope to see many of you here.

regards,

Rick Gevers

FOUR more new news director openings as our recent trend continues, but this week FOUR positions were filled, leaving our count of open ND jobs at 29! (Two of the eight people among those moves are named GREEN(E).

I do not know why I tell you this. 🙂

FOUR of those openings are among SIX paid Help Wanted ads this week. One of those ads is for a GM opening.

MANAGING EDITOR:

WHIO-TV, Dayton, OH (relisted 2/21/16)

Obituary:

We’re a little tardy in reporting the death of one-time WVEC-TV (Norfolk) News Director and Anchor JOHN MILLER. He died earlier this month at the age of 68 of an apparent heart attack. After leaving WVEC, John went into politics and was serving as a State Senator when he died. More here.

Names in the News:

Van Ameyde

Van Ameyde

One time WEYI-TV (Flint/Clio, MI) News Director LEE VAN AMEYDE took the buyout offer from Tegna and WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids and is leaving the station after 39 years, most of them as the primary anchor for that ABC affiliate. The station called it a ‘retirement’ but Lee posted to Facebook: I have no intention of retiring. Three years ago the station moved him off the anchor desk and into a role as Managing Editor of the Investigative Unit. More here.  Small world department: My late mother-in-law was one of Lee’s teachers in high school in Detroit.

PERRY PACE is the new Assistant ND for WVTM-TV in Birmingham. He’s been the Dayside EP for WTHR-TV in Indianapolis for the past four years. He’s also worked for three stations in Houston.

General Manager News:

There’s a new GM for WDBD-TV in Jackson, MS. RAMONA ALEXANDER, a Jackson native, will run this FOX affiliate for American Spirit Media. She’s been working in a corporate sales training position in Charlotte.
