April 28, 2024

Greetings:

We’re a little late due to our attendance at an enjoyable Indiana Pacers-Milwaukee Bucks playoff game, won by the home team.

ONE opening and ONE newly named ND (both the same person!) mean our list of openings stays at 37. And we have ONE new paid help want ad for an assistant ND job in what sounds like a nice place to live

No GM changes this week.

There’s ONE obituary for a San Antonio photographer who died suddenly of natural causes.

Our Names in the News section has details on all the Peabody Award nominees. a new regional VP of News and Content for THREE Florida Telemundo stations, a new Assistant ND in Denver, and more!

There’s just one week left to take advantage of a discount for new memberships and renewals to Investigative Reporters & Editors. Click on the graphic below (or the link in the previous sentence) for more.

Finally, apologies to WLS-TV General Manager JOHN IDLER whose name i misspelled in some editions of last week’s newsletter. (Honestly, it was spell check. I’m sure.)

Newly Named News Directors:

Cox

WBMA-TV, Birmingham, AL…meteorologist turned ND JEFF COX gets his second ND gig as he moves from one Sinclair station to this sister Sinclair ABC affiliate. He replaces JEFF HOUSTON who moved to Nexstar’s WATE-TV in Knoxville late last year.

Assistant News Director, WCYB-TV, Tri-Cities, TN & VA:

The mountains are calling…and so is an awesome opportunity!

News 5 WCYB (NBC) located in the beautiful Appalachian Highlands region of Southwest Virginia/Northeast Tennessee is seeking a “rock star” Assistant News Director to join our news management team.

Your singing voice is less important to us than your ability to help mentor, coach, and inspire. If creating unique, point-of-difference content on all platforms and rising above the “sea of sameness” is your passion, we want to hear from you.

If you’re a music lover, don’t fret! You can spend your free time checking out the incredible exhibits and performances at the nearby Birthplace of Country Music Museum, travel Virginia’s famous “Crooked Road’ and visit the Carter Family Fold to learn about and appreciate the rich musical history that’s helped put our region on the map.

For those who live “life in the fast lane,” you’ll want to experience the world’s fastest half-mile at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The amazing scenery here will provide the perfect setting to enjoy “leaf season” with breathtaking colors in full bloom, hiking, fishing, and cruising along area lakes. If you like to roll the dice on new opportunities, we bet you will also enjoy checking out the Hard Rock Casino Bristol.

It all adds up to a work hard, play hard environment that’s ideal for an Executive Producer, Senior Producer or Managing Editor, looking to take that next career step at a place you can proudly call home.

Obituary:

 ‘Joe’ A.

Our sympathy to the family, friends, and co-workers of KSAT-TV (San Antonio) photographer JOSE “JOE” ARREDONDO who died in his sleep of natural causes on Saturday, April 20th. He was just 49 years old. Joe was a five year veteran of this Graham Media Group owned ABC affiliate which remembered him in this story.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Congratulations to the local stations (and others, obviously) who received nominations for the Peabody Awards this week. I’m loathe to single them out as I usually manage to miss one or two, but you can find all the honorees by clicking on this list.

MIGUELANGEL LÓPEZ has been promoted to Regional Vice President of News and Content for THREE Florida Telemundo stations. Details in this story from Media Moves.

Price

Newly on the job KDVR/KWGN-TV (FOX/CW) News Director SEAN McNAMARA wasted little time filling his open assistant news director position. Sean hired KATHERINE PRICE who was director of local OTT for Scripps, based in Denver. Here’s Sean’s note to the staff. It’s a return to Nexstar for Katherine, who was the Assistant News director for WISH-TV here in Indianapolis when Nexstar owned that station.

Quick hits:

Long ago KAIT-TV (Jonesboro, AR) news director anchor DONNA MALONE, who left the station in 1989 for public relations, has been hired as Director of Communications for the city of Jonesboro.

The efforts to build a memorial in Washington for journalists killed on the job got a boost this week with support from former Presidential press secretaries from both parties.

Picken

And former seven time news director SCOTT PICKEN celebrates his fifth year of ‘life after news’, owning his own State Farm agency. Scott tells me he has also published his first book, under his pen name Troy Wilson, called ‘Fake News, a Novel’. Scott says it’s a journalism-political thriller that has received dozens of five-star reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

April 21, 2024

Greetings:

Only a handful of ND changes this week, but TWO of them were in top ten markets.

Those TWO openings and ONE newly named ND mean our list of openings grows slightly to 37. TWO of those stations are advertising their opportunities in paid help want ads.

The other big news of the week was Graham Media’s hire of SEAN McLAUGHLIN as VP/News. We have new details on that surprise move in Names in the News.

No obituaries and no GM changes this week.

In Names in the News, a new executive director for SPJ, and developments in TWO legal cases we’ve reported on previously.

Finally, Investigative Reporters and Editors has launched a membership drive, offering a rare discount for any new or renewed memberships. Click on the graphic just below for details. Longtime readers know of my affinity for the organization and I’d love to see more broadcasters at this year’s conference in June in Anaheim.

Full disclosure: I am a member of the Board of Directors for IRE.

Newly Named News Directors:

KULX-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…AMY ALVAREZ moves within Telemundo to take over here. She’s been the EP at Telemundo’s San Antonio station, KVDA-TV, for the last five years and has also worked in Houston and Dallas. My records show that PEDRO ANDRADE had been the ND here since last August.

SciLine Crash Course:

Science essentials for news editors

Tuesday, April 23 (2-3 p.m. EDT) – Zoom

SciLine is offering a free, one-hour, Zoom-based science “crash course”—designed specifically for editors. Former longtime Washington Post science reporter Rick Weiss and Ph.D. neuroscientist Dr. Tori Espensen will together lay out key do’s, don’ts, and pitfalls to watch for when editing a news story that includes scientific information or sources with a 15-minute Q&A to follow.

Among the topics to be covered:

  • How even a small dose of science can strengthen almost any story and add to your outlet’s credibility;
  • Different kinds of studies and what each can—and cannot—reveal;
  • Flags to watch for as you assess the accuracy of your reporters’ science-based stories; and
  • Practical tips for identifying credible scientist-sources and guiding reporters to ask the right questions.

After 22 years as VP/News for ABC’s WLS-TV in Chicago, JENNIFER GRAVES will retire in late June. We have Jennifer’s note to her staff, General Manager JOHN IDLER‘s email to the station, and the news release posted to the station’s website.

Jennifer first joined WLS as an EP in 1992, moved to Assistant ND in 1998, and to VP/News in 2001. Jennifer also worked in Atlanta, St. Louis, and Columbia, MO.

Frank W.

And while Jennifer’s 22 years as ND at WLS is remarkable, it falls just short of FRANK WHITTAKER’s 24 years at WMAQ-TV (NBC). a run that ended in late 2022.

For perspective, during that time frame of 22-24 years, Chicago’s other three main news operations have had 2,932 news directors.

Or something like that.

More this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Tuesday, April 16, 2024 UPDATE:

Greetings:

There’s a news director change in a top ten market to share today.

Burgess

Staffers at Cox Media’s WFXT-TV (FOX) in Boston were told this morning in a meeting that news director SARAH BURGESS had decided to leave the station. She’s a 19 year veteran of the station and has been the news director since May, 2018. She’d been Managing Editor before her promotion and had earlier worked for another Boston station and in Las Vegas.

More in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Hello from Las Vegas and the NAB and BEA conventions. Hope to see some of you here.

Just ONE new ND in this week’s report, and TWO new openings, both in Idaho. Our list of open ND jobs increases to 36 stations. TWO of those openings are featured in Paid Help Wanted ads.

No GM changes, but THREE new obituaries and more details about the lives and careers of TWO former NDs whose deaths we first reported last week.

And lots of items in Names in the News:

IRE announces its awards winners.

New owners for longtime industry publication.

A longtime newsman wants your input on a research project about burnout and YOUR job satisfaction.

And a Sacramento newsman returns to his former station as the AND.

Read on!

Newly Named News Directors:

Atwood

KESQ-TV, Palm Desert, CA…KADE ATWOOD transfers within News Press & Gazette to become the next ND for this ABC affiliate. Kade’s been the ND for NPG’s KIFI-TV (also ABC) in Idaho Falls since last September. He’s a former ND for KMVT-TV in Twin Falls, ID, for 3 1/2 years, before 18 months as the Assistant ND for KSNV-TV in Las Vegas. He’s replacing REBECCA JOHNSON who left in March after 7+ years.

And because we value accuracy in this space, I wanted to correct some minor misstatements in last week’s post about ROD HISSONG’s move to ND at WAND-TV in Decatur, IL. Rod was EP at sister Block station WDRB-TV in Louisville for 2 1/2 of this four years there, and he was the weekend anchor at WANE-TV in Ft. Wayne, not the main anchor as we told you.

  • How even a small dose of science can strengthen almost any story and add to your outlet’s credibility;
  • Different kinds of studies and what each can—and cannot—reveal;
  • Flags to watch for as you assess the accuracy of your reporters’ science-based stories; and
  • Practical tips for identifying credible scientist-sources and guiding reporters to ask the right questions.

Obituaries:

Too many obituaries this week.

Longtime talent agent RICHARD LEIBNER died Tuesday. He was 85 and succumbed to cancer. This Variety obituary headline says he made news anchors into stars.

CAROL SNUFFER, wife of KFDX-TV (Wichita Falls, TX) news director MIKE SNUFFER, passed away March 31st at the age of 58. She suffered a second stroke in mid-March following one in 2020. Mike kindly sent me this note (including a photo). Our sympathy to Mike and their five children.

And KATHY ATCHISON, mother of one-tine news director turned Gray TV VP of Recruiting JENNIFER DALE died in mid-March after a long illness. She was 72

And we have two items with more details about the passing of two broadcasters whose deaths we reported last week.

DOW SMITH, who taught at Syracuse (and other places) after a long career as an ND and GM, is remembered in this tribute by current Syracuse Dean Mark Lodato.

And we have this full obituary for former Grand Rapids and Columbia, MO, ND DAN SPAULDING who died last Sunday from congestive heart failure. Dan (along with wife TRISHA) also taught at Missouri.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) announced its 2024 Award winners this week. Check out the full list of winners with links to some terrific work. Full disclosure: I am on the IRE board of directors.

Two broadcast industry veterans have bought the online newsletter NewsBlues. Former Meredith executives PATRICK McCREERY and GARY BROWN also purchased Talent Dynamics in 2022. Here’s the news release about the purchase, and a note they sent to subscribers which is a good read. I wonder what competing publication they are talking about? (Actually, I don’t wonder.)

Mahaney

Like the weather, everyone complains about job burnout…but is anyone doing anything about it? Well, someone is trying: that’s longtime journalist CHIP MAHANEY. Chip, who’s now the Emerging Talent Leader for Scripps, is working on a master’s degree at Kent State and is doing a research project on how news directors feel about their own job satisfaction and job security for his thesis. You need to be a current local ND to participate, which you do can by clicking here.

Adam S.

KOVR/KMAX-TV in Sacramento has filled its open Assistant ND job by hiring ARAM SARKISSIAN. It’s a return to KMAX for Aram who was a producer on the KMAX morning show two decades ago. This staff note by ND PETE SAIERS explains what Aram has been during in the interim.

April 7, 2024

Greetings:

Not a lot of news director changes this week, but read on for other items of note.

Just ONE new ND named, and we’ve added TWO stations to our list of open ND jobs, bringing that list to 35 stations. ONE of those openings is featured in one of our THREE Paid Help Wanted ads.

In a most unusual development, CBS has hired Gray Television’s in house consulting and research group to provide those services to its 14 owned stations. We have more below.

And, sadly for me, we have obituaries for TWO former news directors (among other accomplishments) who were friends of mine, DOW SMITH and DAN SPAULDING.

More on both below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hissong

WAND-TV, Decatur, IL…ROD HISSONG joins this Block Communications owned NBC affiliate. He’s been working for sister Block station WDRB-TV (FOX) in Louisville for the last 4+ years, earlier worked as a reporter in Cincinnati, as an anchor in Ft. Wayne, and for News 12 in New York. At WAND, he replaces JACKLYNN SYLVESTER who left earlier this year to become the Assistant ND for Tegna’s WBNS-TV in Columbus.

SciLine has a wide variety of scientific experts ready to help with your news stories over the next few weeks.

SciLine Briefing:

Climate change and agriculture: air, water, and soil

Tuesday, April 9 (2-3 p.m. EDT) – Zoom

SciLine’s next media briefing will cover the myriad ways agricultural production is—and may soon be affected further—by climate-driven shifts in air quality, including changing carbon dioxide and ozone levels; water quality and quantity; and soil health. Three scientists will make brief presentations and then take questions on the record. SciLine Director Rick Weiss will moderate.

New News Director Openings:

WRC-TV, Washington, DC…a modification here…the station has changed the listing here from an Assistant ND role. That’s the title MATT GLASSMAN held before moving to NBC News as VP of Regional Editorial for NBC News. Matt just wrapped up his time at WRC this week: here’s the story from the station’s website.

One other bit of housekeeping. We’ve added KFSM-TV in Ft. Smith-Fayetteville to our list of open stations…we should have done that when MORGAN SCHAAB transferred to sister Tegna station KSDK-TV in St. Louis as Director of Content earlier this year.

Obituary:

Smith

News Director turned General Manager turned educator DOW SMITH died Tuesday, April 2nd, after a short battle with ALS. Dow was 83. He was a news director in Miami, Detroit, and Washington, DC, a GM in Albany, NY, and Birmingham, AL, and went on to teach at Syracuse and several other universities. He also worked in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Columbia, MO, where he received a Masters’ from the University of Missouri.

Spaulding

Another ND and educator turned PR executive passed away early this morning. DAN SPAULDING was 79 and died of complications from Alzheimer’s. He anchored in several markets, taught at Wisconsin-Green Bay and at Missouri (along with his wife TRISHA) where Dan was ND at KOMU-TV. He later was ND at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI before turning to PR. His bio from the PR firm has more. But Dan may have been proudest of his job as the “Voice” of the Michigan Marching Band. Trisha shared this very poignant note about that, which speaks to the ravages of Alzheimer’s.

We’ll have details on a Celebration of Life when they are finalized.

Names in the News (and other stuff):

In what seems like a first of its kind arrangement, CBS has hired Gray Television’s in house research and consulting staff to provide services to its 14 owned stations. There are no market conflicts. More details here. Not included in the news release are two new hires to that in-house team, including JENELLE SHRINER, a former Gray ND in Lake Charles, Tucson, and Louisville.

General Manager News and Notes:

SHUNECA HARRINGTON returns to Sinclair as GM for WRLH-TV, the company’s FOX affiliate in Richmond, VA. She began her career as an account executive at Sinclair’s WLFL-TV in Raleigh. Most recently, she’s been Director of Sales for WRAL-TV in Raleigh.
