April 20, 2009

We’re a little early this week as we wanted to catch those of you were are headed to soon-to-be hot Las Vegas (74° today, 83° Saturday, 87° Sunday, 91° Monday, 94° Tuesday) for RTNDA and NAB.

That’s because we have two ads aimed at attendees, especially if you are looking for a new job. And we have two social invites you can add to your calendar. (I’ll look forward to seeing you at both events.)

As to the main function of this weekly newsletter, new ND openings in Miami and Huntsville are featured this week, as well as a promotion of a veteran newsman in Houston, filling one of two open ND jobs there.

That leaves the count of open ND jobs at 19.

In Names in the News, new leaders for RTNDA and RTNDF, an award for a longtime newsman, and an obituary for the mother of a former Florida news director.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

WTVJ-TV, Miami, FL…veteran NBC employee YVETTE MILEY is leaving this NBC o-and-o to take on a new role for the network. She’s going to be the Executive Editor for MSNBC. Yvette’s been the ND here since May, 2004 when she returned to WTVJ after a stint as ND for its then owned station, WVTM-TV in Birmingham.

WAFF-TV, Huntsville, AL…MIMI STRAWN is leaving this Raycom-owned NBC affiliate in June to return to New Orleans for family reasons. She’s been the ND since last October, and has previously been a news director in New Orleans and Tulsa. If you are interested in this opportunity, please be sure to see the paid ad below, particularly if you are going to RTNDA.

KPRC-TV, Houston, TX…we told you earlier this week that RICK McFARLAND has been promoted to News Director for this Post-Newsweek/NBC affiliate. He’s been the interim ND since SKIP VALET left to become GM of sister PNS station WKMG-TV in orlando, where he had earlier been the ND. Rick’s been the Assistant ND at KPRC since 2001, and first joined the station in 1980 as a sports photographer. He’s also worked in Syracuse and Columbia, MO, where he and your editor were classmates at the University of Missouri.

(or on the web if you’re not going to Las Vegas)

See the AP in Content Central at NAB 2009, booth C161, and preview ENPS 7.0 starting with its powerful new Digital Publishing Engine. In addition to making it incredibly easy to create multimedia content for on-air, online, and mobile devices, dynamic feedback from your public Web site can automatically flow back into ENPS so producers can see which stories are getting the most attention. ENPS 7.0 components will bolt right on to existing ENPS 6.0 systems as they are released over the next two years.

Also take a closer look at the ENPS Web client, part of the ENPS Mobile Suite, enhanced to give remote users more powerful editing capabilities. ENPS Mobile empowers journalists to work via out-of-the-newsroom browsers on PCs and Macs, as well as on PDAs and cell phones.

If you’re going to RTNDA in Las Vegas, mark your calendar for two get-togethers.

The Missouri Mafia will gather in its regular spot at its regular time. That’s Tuesday evening between 5:00-7:00 at the bar at the Benihana restaurant at the Las Vegas Hilton. This year’s gathering is co-sponsored by Dan Devlin at the Devlin Design Group and will honor Mizzou alum, faculty member, and ND at KOMU-TV, STACEY WOELFUL, who assumes the chairmanship of RTNDA this month.

And, as we told you last week, plan on stopping by the annual and informal gathering of news managers on Monday night, April 20, at the Parasol Down bar in the Wynn Hotel and Casino. That’s the same place this gathering was held last year. It’s set to begin around 9:30, and I’ll look forward to seeing you there. Thanks to BETSY MUELLER for organizing this event.

NAMES in the NEWS:

RTNDA has named new executive directors for both RTNDA and RTNDF. KATHLEEN GRAHAM will oversee RTNDF while JANE NASSIRI will serve as Executive Director for RTNDA, working closely with the organization’s chairman. Read all about it here.

Congratulations to veteran newsman STEVE KALB who’s been honored as the UCONN/Storrs campus Educator of the Year. Steve is an instructor there in addition to his work with the Connecticut radio network.

Our sympathy to PETER SPECIALE on the passing of his mother, GRACE SPECIALE, who died April 8th at the age of 86. Peter’s been an ND in Burlington, VT, and Gainesville, FL. He also helped launch Cablevision’s VOOM/HDNews and most recently was working as a producer for Bloomberg in New York before losing his job in layoffs earlier this year.
