April 27, 2009

Greetings:

It would good to see a few of you at RNTDA this week, and welcome to those of you who are newcomers on the mailing list.

Our weekly newsletter is a little delayed this week, but we have TWO new NDs to report to you. Both were promoted to their jobs from within their current stations. And we have NO new ND openings.

That leaves the count of open ND jobs at 17.

We do have a paid ad for one of those openings. You’ll find that below.

We also have a few headlines from this past week’s RTNDA convention, including video of the speech given by FRED YOUNG, this year’s Paul White Award winner, as well as the video used to introduce Fred.

In Names in the News, an award for another veteran newsman, and an unusual birthday celebration for an East Coast news executive.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:

None, to my knowledge.

RNTDA ITEMS

While attendance at RTNDA was low, a good crowd gathered to honor recently retired Hearst-Argyle Senior VP/News FRED YOUNG as he received the Paul White Award. In his remarks, Fred noted that he’s only the second Paul White winner (of 53!) to come from a local news background. (Miami’s RALPH RENNICK was the other, in 1984.) You should watch Fred’s remarks here. Fred’s colleagues at Hearst prepared a profile video which you might enjoy. Thanks to our friends at Medialine, you can view it here.

Also at the convention, retiring RTNDA President BARBARA COCHRAN was honored by the Association for her years of service, KOMU-TV (Columbia, MO) ND and University of Missouri Journalism Professor STACEY WOELFUL assumed the chairmanship of RTNDA, becoming the first educator to hold that role. And MARK KRAHAM of WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, MD, was elected chairman-elect. Mark will be producing next year’s convention.
