Greetings:
We have just a few changes to share with you in this week’s newsletter.
There’s ONE new opening in a top 25 market. and ONE new ND to report. That brings the number of openings to 23.
Please note that we have removed CLTV from the list of openings, as WGN-TV ND GREG CAPUTO will assume responsibilities for that Tribune-owned cable news operation when CLTV moves to the WGN facility.
We have a paid ad this week for that one new opening…if you’re looking for a new opportunity, be sure to check that out.
There’s an obituary for a former Kansas and Iowa ND and anchor, and a few new news manager promotions, as well. And we’ll share a link to an essay explaining why investigative reporting is not only good journalism, it can be good for business and ratings, too.

KPTV/KPDX-TV, Portland, OR…PATRICK McCREERY has been ND and GM here for a while, and is now looking for a news director so he can concentrate on his GM responsibilities. NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:
WTXL-TV, Tallahassee, FL…veteran ND BILL CUMMINGS will be the next ND for this Calkins Media owned ABC affiliate. Bill most recently has been working for weather vendor Baron Services, but is a former ND in Evansville, Tucson, Huntington, WV, and Tri-Cities, TN. NEWS DIRECTOR, KPTV/KPDX-TV, PORTLAND, OR
Position Summary:
Oversee the operations and management of the News department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Develop daily informative and entertaining newscasts. Hire, train, supervise, and motivate news department personnel. Maintain consistent execution of goals.
Monitor the newscast for accurate editorial content while keeping the brand vision on track.
Work with Programming Consultants and Promotion department to develop effective news promotion.
Develop news operating budget and keep expenses within guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications – All must be met to be considered:
College degree in Journalism or related field. Five years in television news management. Knowledge of budgeting, promotion, journalism, and news production.
Skills and Abilities:
Must know the elements of a good television newscast.
Understand the importance of promotion and branding a newscast.
Must have knowledge of budgeting.
Excellent people skills are a must.
Monitor competition and industry trends

OBITUARY:
I’m sorry to report the death of JON POSTON, a former news director in Wichita (then KTVH-TV) and Sioux City, IA (KMEG-TV), where he also anchored. Jon died last weekend of a massive stroke in Arizona, where he had been working in public relations for the last few years. More details on Jon’s passing in this article from the Sioux City Journal.
