Welcome to a slightly delayed edition of your weekly newsletter covering news director and news management moves. I hope to return to our regular Friday distribution schedule this week.
There’s ONE new opening this week (at a network o-and-o in a top 25 market) and TWO new NDs to tell you about. That means my (very unofficial) count of open ND positions stands at 24.

Here are this week’s changes:
NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:
KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…we first reported that JOHN VERRILLI is being promoted to sister-CBS o-and-o WBZ-TV in an ND List UPDATE earlier this week. John’s been ND here since late 2004, and previously worked for three stations in New York, including WCBS-TV. At WBZ, he replaces JEFF KIERNAN who was also promoted to a larger CBS station, WBBM-TV in Chicago. (John’s move means there are now two ND openings in Pittsburgh, Hearst’s WTAE-TV being the other.)
NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:
WBZ-TV, Boston, MA…as noted above, JOHN VERRILLI will be the next ND for this CBS o-and-o. John’s spent the last 4+ years as ND for CBS’s KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh. He replaces JEFF KIERNAN who was promoted to ND for WBBM-TV in Chicago. Jeff was ND here for just 14 months.
KIVI-TV, Boise, ID…ROBBY MESSER is the new ND for this Journal Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. Robby has been the Assistant ND for Journal’s WGBA-TV in Green Bay, WI. Robby replaces SCOTT PICKEN, who was promoted to ND for the company’s KMTV in Omaha. Scott also went to KIVI from the Assistant ND position in Green Bay.
