January 29, 2017

A very busy week after a slow start to the new year.

As in FOUR new ND openings, and FIVE open position have been filled. Those changes mean our count of ND openings stands at 21.

We have SIX help wanted ads this week, including one for a Washington, DC bureau chief’s position for a large broadcast company.

A San Diego station is shutting down after losing its network affiliation. That’s in Names in the News, along with a new news executive for Nexstar and a new EP in Houston. And we have a few GM changes, as well.

All that…and more…below.

New News Director Openings:

WSMV-TV, Nashville, TN…we told you on Wednesday that veteran news director JIM GILCHRIEST has left this Meredith owned NBC affiliate after 19 months as news director. He’s a former ND in Norfolk and Boise, worked for a number of years in a variety of roles in Charlotte, has been an AND in Winston-Salem, and worked for two stations in Rochester, NY. Jim began his career in radio news.

KUTV, Salt Lake City, UT…another veteran news director has left his job after about 19 months. LEE ELDRIDGE is out at this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate. (Ironically, I reported his hire and Jim Gilchriest’s in the same edition.) Lee’s also been an ND in Louisville, Chattanooga, Rochester, NY, and Greenville, NC, and has worked in Atlanta, San Diego and Memphis.

KSNW-TV, Wichita, KS…DENISE KILLIAN has left this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate after just over three years as ND. She’s a former ND for KWQC-TV in the Quad Cities, worked in Dallas twice in her career, and has also worked in Nashville (twice), Corpus Christi, and Temple, TX.

WMBD/WYZZ-TV, Peoria, IL…JEFF MULLIGAN is leaving this duopoly to return to Kansas City as the Dayside EP for KSHB-TV, the NBC affiliate there. He’s been the ND here since October, 2013. Jeff’s previously worked for another Kansas City station, as well as in Indianapolis, Cape Girardeau, and Terre Haute.

Newly Named News Directors:

Andrea P.

Andrea P.

KTVT-TV, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX…ANDREA PARQUET-TAYLOR returns to Texas as the next news director for this CBS o-and-o. She’s been the ND for WNCN-TV in Raleigh for the past 5 1/2 years. She’s also been an ND in Detroit, Baltimore, and for another Raleigh station. She’s also been the Assistant ND for a Houston station. At KTVT, Andrea replaces MIKE GARBER who left in August after two years.

WCAX-TV, Burlington, VT…we told you last week that his job had been filled, and now we can tell you that ROGER GARRITY is the new ND for this family owned CBS affiliate. He’s worked here for almost 20 years and most recently has been the executive producer and an anchor here. Roger replaces ANSON TEBBETS who resigned in December to return to state government as the Secretary of Agriculture for the State of Vermont.

KDLT-TV, Sioux Falls, SD…this Red River Broadcast Company owned NBC affiliate has named JESSICA BROVOLD its next news director. It’s a return to KDLT for Jessica, who previously anchored there as well as for another Sioux Falls station, and in Mankato, MN. She has been working in marketing and media relations for two health related companies in Sioux Falls. Jessica replaces PAUL HEINERT who left in December after 13 years at the station, and seven as ND, for a job with Sanford Health in Sioux Falls.

WTVA-TV, Tupelo, MS…MIKE RAFFAELE has been named ND for this Heartland Media owned NBC affiliate. He’s spent the last year as assignment manager at WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach, has worked in Allentown and Johnstown, PA. This news release explains that he has extensive newspaper experience, including once owning a newspaper. Mike replaces STEVE ROGERS who left last October after less than a year as news director.

KMVT-TV, Twin Falls, ID…JAY REYNOLDS returns to the ND chair as he takes over for the Gray Television owned CBS affiliate. He’d been the ND for KMID-TV in Midland, TX, until last February. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Pocatello, ID. Jay replaces CHRIS HUSTON who left last September after less than a year on the job.
