July 10, 2016

Greetings:

We have lots to tell you about this week.

For instance, THREE newly named news directors. THREE new news director openings.

There are a lot of Names in the News items, ranging from items on veteran news people to items about younger broadcasters. And we’ll tell you about a former news director arrested while covering a protest in Baton Rouge.

Those ND changes bring out count of open ND jobs to 30. ONE of those open ND jobs is featured in one of our TWO Paid Help Wanted ads.

We have TWO obituaries this week, both of men who had leadership roles for either a small group or a large market powerhouse station. And as I mentioned earlier…lots of times in Names in the News…perhaps even someone you know.

So enjoy and read on!

Funeral services will be held this Tuesday for JIM SEFERT, who served as President and CEO of Cosmos Broadcasting (later Liberty Corp., eventually sold to Raycom Media).  Jim died last Thursday at the age of 86 after a short illness.  Jim was president of Cosmos when I was the ND at its Toledo station, WTOL-TV, and he was always a gentleman.  More on his life and career here.

TOM DOAR, the one time head of the company that owned WCCO-TV in Minneapolis for many years, died June 20th at the age of 95.  Here’s an interesting article from the Star-Tribune about Doar’s role in the growth of that station.

CHRIS SLAUGHTER, the assistant ND of Baton Rouge’s WAFB-TV, was one of several journalists arrested Saturday night while covering a protest related to the police shooting there. He was finally released Sunday afternoon. Here’s the link to the latest story, but this will be a ever-changing situation so you might want to check the station’s website for the latest. Chris is a former ND in New Orleans.

Congratulations to ERIN NEWNAM who’s been promoted to morning EP at Seattle’s KIRO-TV. She had been the morning producer there and has also worked in Charlotte and High Point, NC.

ADRIANA AREVALO, a former News Director for KINC-TV, the Univision station in Las Vegas, has a new job in public relations. Media Moves has more on that.

Best wishes to longtime Hearst Executive FRED YOUNG who celebrated his 75th birthday last week. Fred told me: “It’s back to the retirement work of volunteering, judging collegiate journalism awards and other industry related projects. That leaves plenty of time for the grandchildren and afternoon naps.”
