July 7, 2008

Greetings:

This week’s edition is early in the hopes of reaching many of you before you leave for a long holiday weekend.

And we have a fair amount of movement for your holiday reading, including THREE new openings (one in a top three market) and THREE new NDs to tell you about (one in the Los Angeles market).

My figures show 26 stations with ND openings. We have paid ads for two of those openings below. Please patronize our advertisers!

Also this week, some updates to our list of news management openings, a former ND-turned-consultant takes a corporate news position, and we have a link to the complete list of National Edward R. Murrow award winners.

There’s more on the death of a former San Francisco news director, which we first told you aboutin an emailed update last Tuesday. There’s also details on the deaths of parents of two of our colleagues.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

WSNS-TV, Chicago, IL…ESTEBAN CRESTE is leaving one Telemundo o-and-o for another. He’s been named ND for sister station KVEA-TV in Los Angeles. Esteban was ND here for four years.

WPBF-TV, West Palm Beach, FL…JOE COSCIA has left the Hearst-Argyle owned ABC station after seven years as ND here. He’s previously been a news director in Pittsburgh, Providence, and Albany, NY, and also worked on the assignment desk for three NY city o-and-o’s. NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

He replaces veteran California newsman AL CORRAL who left the station in May after seven years as news director.

KOB-TV, Albuquerque, NM…JAMIE IOOS returns to a ND job as she will be the next news director for this Hubbard-owned NBC affiliate. Jamie spent more than five years as ND for Las Vegas’ KVBC-TV before taking a job as a consultant for Crawford Johnson & Northcott. She’s also worked in Boston, Providence, and Cedar Rapids. At KOB, she replaces RHONDA AUBREY who is moving to Maryland where her husband took a new job.

St. Joe Now, St. Joseph, MO…FRAN TUCKER will be the first ND for this cable news operation operated by the St. Joseph News-Press newspaper. OBITUARIES

We told you earlier this week in an ND List UPDATE that former KNTV (San Jose/San Francisco) ND TERRY McELHATTON died of a heart attack last weekend. Terry was just 52 years old. He spent almost ten years as ND there. He’d also worked in Denver. Most recently, Terry was teaching at Valley Christian High School and was going to join the faculty at San Jose State this fall. Please note that Terry’s funeral is now scheduled for Sunday, July 13th. (We had a different date in Tuesday’s email.) This obituary from the San Jose Mercury News has complete details on funeral arrangements and memorial contributions. And you can join a long list of broadcasting colleagues in leaving your best wishes for his family on this online guestbook.

JONATHAN KNOPF’s father died last month. DR. HAROLD CRASILNECK was 87 years old after a lengthy illness. Many of you know Jonathan, who is now working for the Coaching Company and has been an ND in New Jersey and Raleigh. His father wass described as a pioneer in the field of hypnotherapy in this article from the Dallas Morning News. Your emailed note of condolence would reach Jonathan at: jcknopf@gmail.com

Finally, I’m sorry to report the death of HELENE WING, mother of San Francisco area news manager KEVIN WING. She died Sunday, June 8th, just five days short of her 86th birthday. Her appearances in commercials in the 60’s first got son Kevin intrigued by TV. More details on her life are here. Kevin would receive your kind note via email at: kevinwing@aol.com
