Greetings, and Happy Father’s Day:

Promotions, promotions, promotions are the key word in this week’s report.  There are  TWO new openings this week, and TWO new news directors to introduce you to….and three of those four moves resulted from promotions.

We also have a handful of new news management openings, as well as a paid ad for an Assistant ND opening in Cincinnati.

I considered changing the name of “Names in the News” to “News Directors in Court”, but only two of our items involve courtrooms.  On the positive front, we have a link to the complete list of RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award winners.  Congratulations to Belo, whose KHOU-TV (in Houston) and KTVB-TV (in Boise) won the awards for Overall Excellence.

KSFY-TV, Sioux Falls, SD…JOHN SHELBY has left this Hoak Media owned NBC affiliate after three years as ND.  John’s also been an ND in Waterloo, IA, Green Bay, and Pasco, WA, and has also worked in Chicago, St. Louis, Columbus, OH, Buffalo, Lansing, Las Vegas, and Joplin and Columbia, MO.

WCTV, Tallahassee, FL..congratulations to longtime (like 20 years!) VP/News MIKE SMITH who’s being promoted to General Manager of sister-Gray TV station WTVY-TV in Dothan, AL.  Mike’s also worked in Jacksonville, FL, Savannah, and Knoxville.  WCTV and WTVY are both CBS affiliates.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

News 12 Bronx/Brooklyn…another promotion here finds Assistant ND BERTA CASTANER promoted to GM/ND for this Cablevision owned 24 hour news operation.  She’s been the Assistant ND here for the past few months, and previously was VP/News for the Telemundo station group.  Berta also was the EP for Senior EP for Telemundo’s network news, an ND for Telemundo stations in Chicago and Puerto Rico, and was a producer for WABC-TV in New York.  She replaces LEESA DILLON who left in March after more than two years here.

KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…congratulations as well to longtime Pittsburgh newswoman ANNE LINABERGER who’s been promoted to News Director for this CBS o-and-o.  She’s been the interim ND since COLEEN MARREN left in April after nine months to return to Connecticut as ND for WTIC-TV in Hartford.  Anne’s been the Assistant ND for KDKA for about five years, and EP of Special Projects before that.  She previously worked for WTAE-TV and several radio stations in Pittsburgh, and also worked as an anchor/reporter/producer in Clarksburg, WV.

The Assistant News Director is responsible for the gathering, production and distribution of news content on multiple platforms.

  • Manage day to day news operation for distribution to multiple platforms.
  • Create tactics and strategies to increase demo performance in key target areas for multiple platforms.
  • Lead coverage planning of major events, i.e. elections, special events.
  • Proactively communicate news initiatives across departments.
  • Evaluate workflow efficiencies.
  • Assist News Director in managing the budgetary aspects of newsroom operations.
  • Responsible for hiring and performance management of direct reports.
  • Assist News Director in the on-going evaluation of personnel.
  • Implement and have working knowledge of federal, state and local laws impacting operations.
  • Write copy, edit and post scripts for multiple platforms.
  • Schedule anchors to manage overtime.
  • Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Requirements:

    • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office.
    • Broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment.
    • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
    • Advanced oral and written communication skills
    • May supervise a mid-size team (5-15) of professional individual contributors; may also indirectly supervise support staff.
    • May spend up to 20% of time as an individual contributor performing assignments that require a higher level of experience or technical expertise than subordinates.
    • Typically requires BS/BA in related discipline.
    • Generally 5+ years experience in related field including managerial experience.
    • Responsible for or makes major contribution to development of operating plans and budgets.
    • Primary input to hiring, firing, performance, and rewards decisions, perhaps assisted by subordinate team leaders or senior individual.
    • Primary contribution is managing other people.
    • Manages part of a department or team of exempt professional individual contributors and associated support staff.
    • Responsible for functional area.
    • May manage processes through service providers or indirect reports.

    Longtime News Director JEFF ALAN (legal name: JEFF ALAN BRENT) pleaded guilty last week to three felony charges and is headed to jail.  Click here for details from The Oregonian, where you’ll also find links to a series of article the paper produced.  Under the name Jeff Alan, he served as a news director in Portland, OR, Houston, St. Louis, Memphis, and several other markets.

    Former WPIX-TV (New York) News Director KAREN SCOTT has filed an age discrimination lawsuit against the station, seeking 4.5 million dollars in damages.  She claims she was terminated because of her age, and alleged prominent on-air people faced the same discrimination.  The New York Daily News has the story in this article.

    Former Nashville and Charlotte ND VICKI MONTET is now working for CNN Newsource Sales/Affiliate Relations as a Senior Director.  She’s been on the job there since March.  Vicki also worked for Gannett in Atlanta for several years, and earlier in her career worked in Jacksonville, FL.

    MurrowLogo Final (2)Congratulations to Houston’s KHOU-TV and KTVB-TV in Boise, ID. Both stations were honored with Overall Excellence Awards in the large and small market categories in this year’s RTDNA Edward R. Murrow awards.  A total of 59 news gathering organizations won Murrow Awards in 89 categories.  A complete list of the winners is here.
