Friday, October 19, 2012 UPDATE:

There’s breaking news this morning with a new ND for the NBC o-and-o in Washington.

Goldrick

It was announced within the hour that MIKE GOLDRICK will become the next ND for WRC-TV when he joins the station in late November. Mike’s been the ND for Cox’s WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh for almost three years. He spent the previous three years as ND for WHEC-TV in Rochester, NY. Mike’s also worked in Seattle, Detroit, Houston, Tampa, Charlotte, and West Palm Beach.

At WRC, he replaces CAMILLE EDWARDS who left the station earlier this year to become ND for WABC-TV in New York.

I hope to post this week’s newsletter later today. When it arrives, it will have lots of ND changes.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

Our weekly report is delayed by travel but full of information.

There are THREE new ND openings (including one in the number one market) and FOUR new ND’s to tell you about including one in the number two market).

Those moves mean we now have 29 stations looking for a new news director.

There’s one ad this week for a Senior Executive Producer in the Pacific Northwest.

Our sympathy to the staff at KCBS/KCAL-TV who lost a 35 year veteran assignment manager to cancer this week. Details below.

In Names in the News, two former ND’s have new jobs as EPs, a former ND turned GM is elected to a Hall of Fame, and we’ll tell you about the retirement of a GM who spent nine years as a college basketball coach.

And we’ll introduce you to four longtime TV types who are celebrating a combined 156 years of marriage this year.

All that and more below:

New News Director Openings:

Carey

WPIX-TV, New York, NY…BILL CAREY‘s long reported departure from this Tribune owned station became ‘official’ this week. Bill will leave the station for a new job he expects to be announced shortly. He’s been there just over two years. He’s a former GM in Tampa, ND and Station Manager in the Quad Cities, IL, market, a former ND in Detroit and for WCBS-TV in New York. He’s also worked for WABC-TV there.

WYFF-TV, Greenville, SC…JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI has left this Hearst owned NBC affiliate to become ND for Hearst’s WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. More on that below.

WMTV, Madison, WI…CHRIS GEGG is leaving this Gray TV owned NBC station to become the new news director for Hearst’s WISN-TV in Milwaukee. More on that below.

Newly Named News Directors:

KVEA-TV, Los Angeles, CA…RUBEN KEOSEYAN is the new ND for this Telemundo owned Spanish language station. He most recently was Executive Editor of the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the U.S., La Opinión, in Los Angeles. He earlier had been Publisher and Editor of the largest Spanish language newspaper in the Midwest, La Raza, in Chicago. At KVEA, he replaces RICK MORALES who left the station in August after two years as ND.

Antoniotti

WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…we told you earlier this week that JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI has already started as ND for this Hearst-owned ABC affiliate. He’s spent the last five years as ND for the company’s NBC station in Greenville, SC, WYFF-TV. This second generation broadcaster (Dad Steve was a longtime ND & GM) has also worked in Milwaukee, Houston, Memphis, Biloxi, and Columbia, MO. He replaces ALEX BONGIORNO. We told you last week that she was leaving the station this week after 3 1/2 years as ND.

Gegg

WISN-TV, Milwaukee, WI…in another move we reported in an UPDATE earlier this week, CHRIS GEGG has been named ND for this Hearst-owned ABC station. Chris has spent the last five years at the helm of WMTV‘s (Madison, WI) news department. He’s a former EP in Detroit and Nashville, and has also worked in Tampa and Toledo. Chris replaces LORI WALDON. She left a few months ago to become ND at Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento.

Dale

WJHL-TV, Johnson City, TN…JENNIFER DALE started October 1st as the news director for this Media General owned CBS affiliate. She’s a former Assistant ND for WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA, EP at WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach, SC, and as a producer for WKRG-TV in Mobile. The move reunites her with her former boss, DAN CATES, who was her ND in Mobile and is now the GM for WJHL. She replaces JOHN SOARES who left last month to become ND for KWCH-TV in Wichita.

Names in the News:

GRIFF POTTER returns to the Midwest as the new Morning EP for WDIV-TV in Detroit. He’s also been an ND in Paducah, KY, and Quad Cities, IL, and has worked in Milwaukee, Nashville, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Kansas City, Toledo and Huntsville, AL.

Glazier

LEEZA GLAZIER is the new EP at ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno, CA. She most recently was the Assistant ND at for the now closed OHIO NEWS NETWORK. Leeza’s a former ND for WOWK-TV in Huntington, WV, and has worked in Jacksonville, FL, Shreveport and Alexandria, LA. In addition to her management experience, Leeza’s began her career on air as a morning weather anchor.

News Director turned GM PAUL SANDS has been elected to the Vermont Broadcasters Hall of Fame. We told you a few weeks ago that Paul is retiring at the end of the year as GM of WPTZ/WNNE-TV in Burlington, VT.

WAYNE MARTIN, who’s been GM of Gray TV’s WKYT-TV in Lexington, KY since 1993, has announced his retirement as of the end of the year. Did you know that he spent nine years as the head basketball coach at Morehead State University?

Anniversaries:

Let’s pause a moment to congratulate three longtime broadcasters who are celebrating their 42nd anniversaries this year. In a business full of too many divorces and failed relationships, 42 years is worth of a tip of our hat.

Longtime consultant and AR&D Principal JIM WILLI and his wife SHERRI marked their 42nd this month.

KIRO-TV (Seattle) News Director BOB JORDAN and his wife SHARON celebrated their 42nd in May.

And former ND turned WCMH-TV (Columbus, OH) General Manager DAN BRADLEY and wife LYNN achieved their 42nd last month.

Finally, while not in the 42 year club (but still noteworthy) retired Las Vegas and Nashville ND MIKE CUTLER and his wife CHRIS observed their 30th this month.

Congrats to all.
