October 8, 2017

Greetings:

It’s been a good week for the THREE people who took new news director jobs this week. Heck, it may have been a good week for the ONE news director whose opening was created by his upcoming retirement.

That means 25 stations have news director openings according to my figures.

Of those openings, ONE is featured in a paid help wanted ad, along with an ad for an EP job in the midwest.

The National News and Documentary Emmys were announced this week. We have the details. A news related website has a new operator. An Atlanta station hires TWO new news managers, and a former news director has been elected president of…well, you’ll have to read Names in the News to find out.

If you had a hurricane bearing down on you, would you speed up or delay the installation of a new set? We’ll tell you what one Jacksonville station did.

And congrats to a former ND turned GM who’s easing up the corporate ladder.

Details below!

October 1, 2017

Thursday, October 5, 2017 UPDATE:

Greetings:

One of the THREE Tegna News Director openings has been filled. (WUSA-TV and WTSP-TV are the others.)

Lupenski

Lupenski

TIFFANI LUPENSKI has just been named News Director for Tegna’s NBC affiliate in St. Louis, KSDK-TV. Here’s the official news release with more details.

It’s a return to the company for Tiffani, who worked as an Executive Producer for six years at what was then Gannett’s KUSA-TV in Denver.

Tiffani most recently worked as ND for KGTV (Scripps/ABC) in San Diego, a position she left in August after 2+ years. She earlier had been an ND for KATU-TV in Portland (OR) as well as the Assistant ND there. She spent two years in Seattle as an EP at KCPQ-TV, worked as a reporter/anchor in Birmingham and Lake Charles, LA, as well as for CNN and for radio stations in Atlanta and San Antonio.

At KSDK, she replaces KARIN MOVESIAN who left the station last week: she’d been ND there for 2+ years.

More on all the week’s news in our full newsletter this weekend.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

TWO up and TWO down. Not a late season baseball update but the number of news director changes in this week’s report. The two new openings are in top 21 markets and both are at Tegna stations.

That means 27 stations have news director openings according to my figures.

ONE of those openings in feature among our THREE paid help wanted ads, with TWO for management positions in top 20 markets.

We have a handful of news management moves in markets large and small, details about the retirement of a top five market GM who’s a former news director, and the obituary for the father of a CNN executive and former news director.

All that and more, below!

Newly Named News Directors:

Howard

Howard

WTVQ-TV, Lexington, KY…SARA HOWARD has been promoted to News Director for this Morris owned ABC affiliate.  She’s been the Assignment Manager there for the past four years, and previously worked assignment desk jobs in Charlotte, Spartansburg, SC, and Charlottesville, VA.  At WTVQ, she replaces STEVE FRANCE who’d been the ND there for the last 5+ years.  He’d also been an ND in Toledo, where he began his career when I hired him as a part-time tape editor at WTOL-TV.

KNOE/KAQY-TV, Monroe, LA…BRAD GINSBERG is the new news director for this Gray Televison owned CBS/ABC duopoly.  He’s earlier worked in Louisville, Albuquerque, Ft. Myers, Austin, TX, Ft. Smith, AR, and Harlingen, TX.  Brad replaces BOB WALTERS  who was promoted with Gray to become ND at KWTX-TV in Waco, TX.  Bob was ND here for five years.

New News Director Openings:

Clinkingbeard

Bob C.

WTSP-TV, Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL…we told you Thursday that BOB CLINKINGBEARD had resigned as news director for this Tegna-owned ABC affiliate.  Bob explained his decision in this email to me.  He’d been the ND here for 2 years and earlier served as an ND in Orlando, Milwaukee, and Greensboro, NC. He’s also worked in Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, Birmingham, Alexandria, LA, and Columbia, MO.

Movesian

Movesian

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…in another move we shared with you earlier this week, KARIN MOVESIAN has quit this Tegna owned NBC affiliate after 2+ years. Here’s the story from the local newspaper, and here’s the note from GM ALICIA EISNER to the staff: it won’t take long to read. Karin came to St Louis from Las Vegas, where she spent eight years as ND for KTNV. A St. Louis native, Karin was graduated from St. Louis University and earlier worked at KMOV-TV in St. Louis, as well as San Antonio, and as an EP in Chicago (two stations), Detroit, and Minneapolis.

And while it’s not a new opening, please note the paid help wanted ad below for KXLY-TV in Spokane that’s just below.

Speaking of KXLY, apologies to outgoing ND JERRY POST.  In reporting his pending departure to open his own business, we told you he’d been ND at KXLY for 19 years.  He’s worked there for 19 but has been ND for 12.

Greetings:

To be honest…it’s a slow week. But we have some items worthy of your interest, I hope.

26 stations have news director openings. That’s according to my count after a week in which TWO news director jobs became open, and ONE was filled.

We have THREE paid help wanted ads, TWO for management positions in top 20 markets and the third is for a high level recruitment position at CNN.

There’s an obituary for a former Washington state anchor and ND, more details about the passing of a veteran ND whose death we first told you about last week, some senior management changes at Univision, GM changes in Missouri and Indiana, and a scholarship fund for a longtime Illinois ND who died earlier this summer.

It’s all below!

On to our normal business…

TWO newly named news directors this week…and just ONE new opening. That leaves our list of open ND jobs at 26.

ONE of those open jobs is featured among our TWO Paid Help Wanted Ads. And the other ad is for a recruiting position at CNN, which, I’m guessing, will appeal to a lot of you.

TWO top 25 market stations have filled open management jobs: we’ll tell you who filled those below.

We tell you about the good news for a Los Angeles Assistant ND who’s moving to a GM job at a market six NBC o-and-o. And there are a few other GM moves, as well.

And we have TWO obituaries, including one for a five-time news director.

All that and more below!

Gregory

KDVR/KWGN-TV, Denver, CO…you learned from our mid-week update that BRIAN GREGORY will be the next ND for this Tribune owned FOX/CW duopoly. The move reunites him with GM JOAN BARRETT: they worked together in Wichita at KWCH-TV. Here’s the memo Brian sent his staff at KWCH, and here’s the press release from KDVR. He’s also worked in Sacramento, Knoxville, and Erie, PA, where he began as a part-time photographer. Brian replaces HOLLY GAUNTT who crossed the street (literally in this case: the stations are across from each other on Speer Blvd.) earlier this summer.
