April 20, 2009

Greetings:

We’re a little early this week as we wanted to catch those of you were are headed to soon-to-be hot Las Vegas (74° today, 83° Saturday, 87° Sunday, 91° Monday, 94° Tuesday) for RTNDA and NAB.

That’s because we have two ads aimed at attendees, especially if you are looking for a new job. And we have two social invites you can add to your calendar. (I’ll look forward to seeing you at both events.)

As to the main function of this weekly newsletter, new ND openings in Miami and Huntsville are featured this week, as well as a promotion of a veteran newsman in Houston, filling one of two open ND jobs there.

That leaves the count of open ND jobs at 19.

In Names in the News, new leaders for RTNDA and RTNDF, an award for a longtime newsman, and an obituary for the mother of a former Florida news director.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

She’s been the ND since last October, and has previously been a news director in New Orleans and Tulsa. NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KPRC-TV, Houston, TX…we told you earlier this week that RICK McFARLAND has been promoted to News Director for this Post-Newsweek/NBC affiliate. He’s been the interim ND since SKIP VALET left to become GM of sister PNS station WKMG-TV in orlando, where he had earlier been the ND. Rick’s been the Assistant ND at KPRC since 2001, and first joined the station in 1980 as a sports photographer. He’s also worked in Syracuse and Columbia, MO, where he and your editor were classmates at the University of Missouri.

The Missouri Mafia will gather in its regular spot at its regular time. That’s Tuesday evening between 5:00-7:00 at the bar at the Benihana restaurant at the Las Vegas Hilton. This year’s gathering is co-sponsored by Dan Devlin at the Devlin Design Group and will honor Mizzou alum, faculty member, and ND at KOMU-TV, STACEY WOELFUL, who assumes the chairmanship of RTNDA this month.

And, as we told you last week, plan on stopping by the annual and informal gathering of news managers on Monday night, April 20, at the Parasol Down bar in the Wynn Hotel and Casino. That’s the same place this gathering was held last year. It’s set to begin around 9:30, and I’ll look forward to seeing you there. Thanks to BETSY MUELLER for organizing this event.

Greetings:

The list of open news director positions continues to drop as THREE stations have filled open positions. One of those hires did create the only new opening to share with you, so there are now just 18 stations with an opening.

My count, of course, is unofficial. No wagering, please.

We do have a paid ad for one of those openings, as well as another ad for AP’s ENPS newsroom system. Learn more about it either at NAB or via their website.

We’ve renamed “Names in the News” to “Misc. Items and Names in the News” this week. You’ll have to scroll down to see why. And we have one new category “Help a Professor”.

You’ll have to scroll down for that one, too.

All that and more following this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:

WKRG-TV, Mobile, AL…DAN CATES is leaving one Media General station for another. He’s been named ND for WSPA-TV in Spartansburg, SC. More on that move before. Dan’s been ND for this CBS affiliate for more than ten years.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

KUTV, Salt Lake City, UT…STEVE HERTZKE has been promoted to News Director for this CBS affiliate. He’s worked his way up at the station, having produced almost every newscast there, worked as the lead producer on the investigative unit, and most recently served as Senior Executive Producer. He replaces TANYA VEA who left the station last August after three years as ND. KUTV is owned by Four Points Media Group, a subsidiary of Cerberus Capital Management. Late last month, Nexstar agreed to manage the company’s seven stations for a fee.

WSPA-TV, Spartansburg, SC…as noted above, DAN CATES will be the next ND for this Media General owned CBS affiliate. He’s coming from sister MG station WKRG-TV in Mobile, AL. He replaces ALEX BONGIORNO who left the station last month to become ND for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. She had been the ND there for about 18 months.

KTVE/KARD-TV, Monroe, LA…veteran News Director MELISSA KLINZING is the new ND for this Nexstar operated NBC/FOX duopoly. Melissa’s a former ND in Philadelphia, Tampa, Denver, Oklahoma City and most recently was the Assistant ND for WTKR-TV in Norfolk. She replaces RANDALL KAMM who left the station earlier this year after just over two years as ND.

Help a professor!

Arizona State University Professor BILL SILCOCK is working on a new book and would welcome input from you. He writes:

Willing to share how you and your staff resolved some “tough calls” or ethical challenges in electronic news? Broadcast faculty at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism are writing a fresh book for use in the classroom and the newsroom. They need your help. If you’re willing, you can contact Bill Silcock at: bsilcock@asu.edu

Or you can just answer the questions below and e-mail them directly to Bill:

* What’s one thing about writing that you know now but wish you’d known when you were starting in the business?

* What’s the first thing you do when you sit down to write a news script?

* How important are professional codes (RTNDA, SPJ, NPPA) and network/station standards and practices? Do you have your own station codes?

* Share your biggest ethical dilemma in your broadcast news work and how you resolved it.

March 30, 2009

Greetings:

Some may call it March Madness, but it’s pretty quiet on the news director and news management movement front. We have just TWO new moves to report to you this week. And both those moves involve corporate VPs who are assuming roles at one of their company’s stations.

That drops the list of open news director positions to just 18 by my count.

And it’s also slow on the Names in the News department. We’re always interested in items for that popular part of this weekly newsletter. Send ’em via email to: rick@rickgevers.com

Here are this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

None that I know of.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WCMH-TV, Columbus, OH…DAN BRADLEY returns to Ohio to become Director of Digital Journalism for this Media General owned NBC affiliate. Dan will remain VP/News for Media General, and will work closely with Content Brand Manager IKE WALKER who has day to day responsibility for news coverage. Dan went to Ohio State so the move to Columbus is a homecoming for him. The move also reunites Dan with WCMH General Manager RICK ROGALA. They worked in similar roles at WFLA-TV. STAN SANDERS had been the ND here. He left in January after 10 years.

WOI-TV, Des Moines, IA…in a similar move to the one reported above, AL SANDUBRAE will become News Director for this Citadel owned ABC affiliate while remaining as VP/News for Citadel. He’ll replace SCOTT FREDERICK who will leave the station in June when his contract expires.
