August 4, 2014

Wednesday, August 6, 2014 UPDATE:

The long vacant WBZ-TV (the CBS o-and-o in Boston) news director opening was filled today with someone who won’t have to move.

LaPlante

GARY LaPLANTE, who’s been the Assistant ND for Fox-owned-for-now WFXT-TV in Boston, is leaving to take the ‘BZ job. Gary’s been at WFXT for three years, and earlier in his career worked for WHDH-TV in Boston. He was an EP in Hartford, an Assistant ND for WTEN-TV in Albany, NY, and the news director for WXXA-TV, the FOX station in Albany, before returning to Boston.

WFXT, as you may know, is being traded to Cox Media (along with WHBQ-TV in Memphis) for KTVU-TV in San Francisco, the Cox-owned FOX affiliate there.

He replaces JOHN VERRILLI who left the CBS o-and-o in March after five years as ND.

Greetings:

We’re late this week due to our attendance at the NABJ conference in Boston. And there were a few interesting items to come out of the convention.

  • NABJ and NAHJ have signed an agreement to consider a joint 2016 conference. As most of you know, NABJ withdrew from the Unity: Journalists for Diversity group prior to the 2012 convention. More in this article.
  • My friend and client STEVE OSUNSAMI from ABC and I were at the same table at last night’s Salute to Excellence dinner with ROBERTO QUINONES, the Executive Director of Unity, and DAVID STEINBERG, the organization’s President. They told us that they are exploring opportunities for a joint convention with another organization (like ASNE, SPJ, etc.) but it’s possible that there will NOT be a Unity conference in 2016. We’ll likely know more after an October Unity board meeting.

The Salute to Excellence Dinner featured several individual awards, and an unusual way to announce the many other award winners. They were scrolled on the large screens in the ballroom with a voiceover, instead of announced individually, by the hosts. It sped up the program, but it was almost impossible to hear over the noise in the room. If you missed the winners (as most everyone there did) the entire list can be found here.

On, now, to our normal business.

FIVE new news director openings, THREE newly named NDs, and SEVEN paid help wanted ads. (Why are the busy weeks always when I’m traveling?) That means there are now 30 open ND jobs on our list at the end of this newsletter.

We have a number of large market news manager changes in our Names in the News section, as well as a pending retirement for a former (times two) RTDNA chair and a new job for a newspaper guy turned TV News Director turned newspaper guy.

All that, and more, below!

New News Director Openings:

Turchetta

KEYE-TV, Austin, TX…GREG TURCHETTA is leaving this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate to return to Southwest Florida for a job outside of TV. He’s been the ND here for almost exactly two years, coming from an Assistant ND position in Orlando. Greg’s also been an Assistant ND in Ft. Myers, an EP in Atlanta, Seattle, and Ft. Myers, and worked as a photographer in Orlando and Jacksonville.

Korioth

WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach, SC…STEVE KORIOTH left this Media General owned CBS affiliate after two years as ND. He previously had been ND for a Media General station in Columbus, GA, spent six years as an ND in Denison, TX, and has also worked in Madison, WI, Huntsville, AL, Tucson, Dallas and Chicago. Steve tells me he’d like to land closer to family in Texas.

WWAY-TV, Wilmington, NC…SCOTT PICKEY has left this ABC affiliate after 4+ years as ND. Scott’s a former ND at another Wilmington station and in Fayetteville, AR. He’s also worked in El Paso, Huntsville, Raleigh, Richmond, and Syracuse. WWAY is owned by Morris Multimedia.

WKTV, Utica, NY…this Heartland Media owned NBC affiliate has posted a news director opening. STEVE McMURRAY has been holding down both that job and the General Manager’s position since last March, but the plan was always to add a news director down the road. Steve joined the station in 2002 as Assignment Manager, was promoted to ND in 2004, and Station Manager in 2012, and General Manager in March.

KAVU-TV, Victoria, TX…JENNIFER DODD is leaving this Saga Communications owned ABC affiliate to return to San Antonio as the Assistant News Director for KENS-TV there. She’s a former reporter/anchor for KSAT-TV in San Antonio, and has also worked in Dallas and Beaumont.

And while it’s not a new opening (we first reported the vacancy last week) please note the paid ad below for the ND opportunity at WIVB-TV in Buffalo.

Newly Named News Directors:

Vazquez

KTMD-TV, Houston, TX…a cross-town and cross language move in Houston, where longtime KTRK-TV Executive Producer JERRY VAZQUEZ moves to this Telemundo owned station. Jerry spent 13 years at KTRK, is a former ND at KMID-TV in Midland, TX, and worked both for English and Spanish language stations in San Antonio. He starts work at KTMD tomorrow and replaces REY CHAVEZ who left the station in July after 3+ years as ND.

Stevens

WSET-TV, Lynchburg, VA…LEN STEVENS has been promoted to News Director for this just-acquired-by-Sinclair-last-week ABC affiliate. He’s the primary weeknight anchor and has been the interim anchor since BOB CASHEN left the station earlier this year after a few months as news director. Len first joined WSET in January, 2002, and has also worked in his native Milwaukee, Greenville and Winston-Salem, NC.

KPVI-TV, Pocatello, ID…ERIC JOCHIM will be the next ND here. He’s been an EP for KECI/KCFW/KTVM-TV in Montana. If I’m correct, he replaces TODD BLACKINTON who’d been the ND and anchor there for the past two years. This NBC affiliate is owned by Idaho Broadcast Partners.

Names in the News…and other things:

Lots of large market management moves this week.

DOUG WHITMIRE moves from Morning EP to EP of the 10:00 PM news for WLS-TV in Chicago. He’s been at this ABC o-ando since 2003, and earlier worked in Toledo.

Another ABC o-and-o lost a top manager as 14 year KGO-TV employee STEPHANIE ADROUNY crosses the street (in this case, many streets) and heads to KNTV in San Jose as the new Assistant ND for that NBC owned station. That’s her most recent job at KGO.

In Atlanta, WSB-TV has hired BRIAN SMITH as its new Director of News Technology. Brian most recently worked at ABC o-and-o WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, as Director of Advanced Technology. Brian’s spent his entire career at either ABC of the owned station group.

Speaking of Atlanta, former Atlanta (and Tampa, and Washington, and Cincinnati, and Little Rock) News Director LANE MICHAELSEN moves to the Sinclair Broadcast Group as Group News Director. You know from our report earlier this week that Lane once held a similar role for Gannett.

SARA JUST, the deputy Washington bureau chief for ABC News, has been named Executive Producer of the PBS News hour.

WHAM-TV in Rochester, NY, has promoted veteran reporter SEAN CARROLL to its vacant EP position. He also handled special projects for this ABC station.

VERONICA LANDRY joins KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs, CO, as Morning Executive Producer. She’s been working in El Paso, and has also worked in Shreveport.

Two good friends are making news this week with significant career changes.

Priddy

BOB PRIDDY, longtime news director of Missourinet, but best known to you as a two-time leader of what is now RTDNA, will retire December 1st. Bob was the founding news director for the 40 year old statewide radio network, and will continue doing a daily Missouri history program that airs there. He earlier spent seven years as ND for a Jefferson City radio station and also worked in Columbia, MO. Bob, an avid IndyCar fan and terrific writer, has also penned five books and has two more in the works, all focusing on Missouri history. Friends will honor and/or roast Bob in Columbia, on October 6th. You can wish him well, too: bpriddy@missourinet.com

Parks

And old pal SCOTT PARKS has a new job. Scott’s career has taken him from newspapers, to TV and back to newspapers, most recently at the Dallas Morning News. He’s now returned to his first newspaper, the Denton (TX) Record-Chronicle, as Managing Editor. Scott’s father worked there, as his did step-father, and he spent much of his childhood in Denton. His TV career included stops as a news director in Columbia, SC, and Tulsa in the late 80’s/early 90s.  He’s written a terrific note to the readers of the paper, and I hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy it by clicking here. Scott’s email is: sparks@dentonrc.com

Friday, August 1, 2014 UPDATE:

Michaelsen

LANE MICHAELSEN’s journey to a ‘familiar position and a familiar location’ (as he told me when he left WGCL-TV in Atlanta last month) reached its destination today with news that he’s been named Group News Director for the Sinclair Broadcasting Group.  Lane (whose early days in this business were as a photojournalist) told me:

A great opportunity to work for a company with a vision plus I will work with two great photographers, Scott Livingston (Vice President of News) and Stan Heist (talent manager).

Lane resigned from WGCL last month after 16 months as ND.  He’s also been an ND in Cincinnati, Washington, Tampa, and Little Rock, served as Director of Photography at Gannett’s KARE-TV in Minneapolis, a VP/News for Gannett, and also worked in Moline, IL, and at Poynter.

It’s been another busy week in news director movement land.  Our full report will follow later this weekend.

Wednesday, July 30, 2014 UPDATE:

Good evening from Boston and the NABJ conference, where I’ll look forward to saying hello in person to many of you.

But the big news tonight comes from Milwaukee and Cincinnati, as the E. W. Scripps Company and Journal Communications have announced plans to merge their broadcast operations and will spin off their newspapers into a separate company.

More in this story from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and this video explanation from Scripps’ CEO RICH BOEHNE.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

If we reach via email you know it’s been a busy week..with THREE mid-week UPDATES that reported FIVE ND changes.

Those were among THREE new news directors named this week, with another THREE ND jobs opening up. All that shuffling leaves our list of open ND jobs at 27.

We have FIVE paid ads this week…as often is the case, a wide variety of experienced required in a wide variety of market sizes. One of those ads even seeks a journalism professor who would also serve as ND of a successful public radio station.

We have obituaries of TWO news veterans…one of the first women news producers and the first ND of a New Jersey TV station. And we’ll let someone else explain the complicated station deal the FCC okayed this week (It’s late. I’m tired!) and we’ll tell you about a new Assistant ND in Boston.

THREE stations have new GMs, and that info is reported here, too.

Finally…the deadline is near for an awards competition that pays $1,000 to the winner.

That’s just below…and all this week’s news follows that.

New News Director Openings:

KTRK-TV, Houston, TX…we told you on Friday of the resignation of 14 year news director DAVE STRICKLAND.  Here’s a copy of the note he sent his staff.  Dave spent most of his career at the ABC o-and-o.  He was the Managing Editor before leaving in 1994 to become the Executive Producer at WAVY-TV in Norfolk.  Dave was promoted to ND there in 1996 and served four years before returning to KTRK.

And you do all of this with a managerial and supervisory style that is educational and, more importantly, inspirational. Our brand is “Getting the Facts Right” and as executive producer you will play a key role in delivering on that brand through proofreading and editing copy, meeting deadlines and doing so with urgency and collegiality. When you enter our newsroom, you will meet a team that is energized, engaged and empowered to serve this community and bring them the very best content that matters most to them.

Want to join us? Send us your resume and a cover letter that shows us how you met the above qualities and why you should be our next EP.

Friday, July 25, 2014 UPDATE:

Strickland

A busy week ends with a big surprise from Houston, where longtime KTRK-TV News Director DAVID STRICKLAND resigned today from this ABC o-and-o, effective immediately.

In a note to his staff (click here to read the entire message) Dave says he wants to spend more time with his family.

He’s been the ND here for the past 14 years, and worked there earlier in his career, as well, rising to Managing Editor before leaving in 1996 to become Executive Producer for WAVY-TV in Norfolk. He become the ND at WAVY in 1996, before returning to Houston and KTRK in 2000.

Also, another longtime ND left his job late this week, as JOE SCHLAERTH parted ways with WIVB-TV in Buffalo. More on that in our full report later this weekend.

Any week with three updates during the course of the week means a chock-full newsletter which may not arrive until Sunday.

Tuesday, July 22, 2014 UPDATE:

Another day, another promotion to News Director in a Pacific Northwest market.

Today it’s KOIN-TV in Portland, OR, where KATE GLOVER has been promoted from Assistant ND to ND. It’s not her first ND gig…she spent a year as ND at KMIR-TV in Palm Springs, CA, earlier in her career. She joined KOIN a few months ago and has served as interim ND since BRAD NEUHOFF left this LIN owned CBS station in February.

Kate’s background is on the assignment desk and field producing…she held those roles for two stations in Washington, and also for CNN and Fox News Channel. She also worked as an EP in San Diego.

Also today, a rare cross-town move in Madison, WI, where JOE RADSKE left his job as ND for WKOW-TV to move to WISC-TV as EP.

More later in our full newsletter.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Monday, July 21, 2014 UPDATE:

Milstein

Congratulations to JAKE MILSTEIN who’s been promoted to News Director of Cox’s KIRO-TV in Seattle.  Jake joined that CBS affiliate in 2008 as Managing Editor…and was promoted to oversee the station’s digital efforts in 2012.  He previously worked as a Senior Producer at WRC-TV in Washington, as an Assistant News Director for KCOY/KKFX-TV in Santa Maria, CA, and as a producer at KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco.

At KIRO, he replaces BOB JORDAN who retired at the end of June, ending a 45 year career in our business.

More on all the week’s news management news in our full newsletter, which will likely be delayed this week by my attendance at Sunday’s Brickyard 400 NASCAR race here in Indianapolis.

New News Director Openings:

Michaelsen

WGCL-TV, Atlanta, GA…we told you earlier this week that LANE MICHAELSEN had left this Meredith-owned CBS affiliate after less than a year and a half as news director. Here’s part of a note Lane shared with me:

I am very proud of the team there and the work they did over the last sixteen months. I have something in the works that is both a familiar position and a familiar location. I will miss the newsroom team at CBS46.

More in this article. Lane’s been an ND in Cincinnati, Washington, DC, Tampa, and Little Rock, served as VP-News for Gannett, and worked at Poynter. A former photojournalist, he spent eight years as Director of Photography at KARE-TV in Minneapolis.

Stacy

WSLS-TV, Roanoke, VA…MELISSA (PREAS) STACY is moving up within Media General. She’s joining sister-station WFLA-TV in Tampa as the Assistant News Director. Except for three years (2004-07) as ND for Media General’s WNCT-TV in Greenville, NC, she’s spent most of her career at WSLS, joining the station in 1999. She’s been the ND for this NBC affiliate for the past seven years.

Newly Named News Directors:

WXTB-TV, Atlanta, GA…JORGE BUZO is the new ND for this Telemundo affiliate. He’d been an anchor and reporter there.

LaVelle

KPRC-TV, Houston, TX…you learned via our midweek UPDATE that RHONDA LaVELLE has been promoted to ND for this Post-Newsweek owned NBC affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND there since March, and has been the interim news director since DEBORAH COLLURA left in May to become GM for Gannett’s WCNC-TV in Charlotte. Deb was ND there for just over three years. Rhonda’s a 16 year Post-Newsweek veteran, all of it at WDIV-TV in Detroit, most recently as executive producer.

If you’ve seen a steady stream of moving vans on I-95 from Orlando to Jacksonville, we know why. First it was BOB LONGO who went from ND at WESH-TV to ND at WTEV/WAWS. Bob’s now hired WESH Executive Producer JERRY GOODMAN to be the new morning EP at WTEV. Jerry previously worked at WJXT-TV in Jacksonville. Congratulations to RHONDA LaVELLE, who gets her first News Director job today as she’s been promoted at KPRC-TV in Houston, the Post-Newsweek station there. Rhonda’s been the interim ND since DEBORAH COLLURA left in May to become GM at WCNC-TV in Charlotte.

Rhonda just joined this NBC affiliate in March, but she’s no stranger to Post-Newsweek, having worked for sister-station WDIV-TV in Detroit for 16 years, most recently as the Executive Producer.

More on this story in our full report later this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

Ever start a job as the only employee of the news department, with your first day around a table in an apartment with only one landline phone to work with? That’s the backstory of one ND who’s moving from that job (a job he’s held for 18 years) to become a general manager.

That’s one of THREE new openings in this week’s report, with TWO newly named NDs, one in a top five market. Those changes leave our count of open ND jobs at 26.

If you’d like to be a Morning EP, there are TWO such opportunities among the FOUR paid help wanted ads this week.

And in Names in the News, we’ll tell you about a few news managers on the move, and new jobs for some former NDs.

All that…and more…below.

New News Director Openings:

WPTV, West Palm Beach, FL…we reported earlier this week that MIKE GARBER is leaving this Scripps’ owned NBC affiliate for a job in Dallas (more below). He’s been the ND here for two years. Scripps has dispatched DAN WILSON, the assistant ND for KNXV-TV in Phoenix, to serve as the interim ND here, while JAMIE IOOS will step up from EP to handle Dan’s duties while he is away.

Kelly

WBMA/WCFT/WJSU-TV, Birmingham, AL…congratulations to longtime ND and old friend GARRY KELLY who’s leaving this owned-by-Albritton-for-now ABC affiliate to become the GM for WSLS-TV, the Media General owned NBC affiliate in Roanoke, VA. Garry was the first ND here, as he described in a note to me:

It is hard leaving this station. Remember it did not exist when I first started. On my first day there were three of us sitting around a dining room table in an apartment with one phone (a land line). I helped carry in the set, helped pull the wiring and cables throughout the building and hired everyone in the department that’s there today. Ten of those people were part of the original team.

That was in 1996. He’d been an ND in Huntsville for three years, and has also worked in Nashville, Denver, and Detroit.

Assistant ND JEFF HOUSTON will be the interim ND. A permanent replacement will likely await the completion of the sale of the station. Albritton announced plans to sell to Sinclair but the deal has been held up and faces a deadline later this month.

KTAB/KRBC-TV, Abilene, TX…after 2+ years here, KEVIN OSGOOD is trading hot weather for cold as he moves to sister-Nexstar station WFRV-TV in Green Bay as its next ND. More below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Garber

KTVT/KTXA-TV, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX…as noted above, MIKE GARBER will be the next news director for this CBS owned duopoly. Mike’s been the ND for Scripps’ WPTV in West Palm Beach for the past two years. Before that, he spent four years as ND in Jacksonville, FL, (WLTV/WJXX-TV), five years as ND WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC, and as an Assistant ND in Tucson. Mike began his career as a sports producer for two stations in Tampa and in San Francisco. In Dallas, he becomes the fifth ND in eight years as he replaces ADRIENNE ROARK, who left to become a GM for KOIN-TV in Portland.  (Apologies to Mike: our earlier report listed him as a GM at WLTX when he was the ND there.)

Osgood

WFRV-TV, Green Bay, WI…KEVIN OSGOOD will be the next ND for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate. We told you above that he’s leaving his job as ND for the company’s Abilene duopoly, KTAB/KRBC-TV. Kevin’s a former ND in Huntsville. He’s also worked in Richmond, Tampa, and for a second Huntsville station, and took a seven year hiatus from news to work for several companies in the set design field. At WFRV, he replace KENT HARRELL who left after not quite two years to return to Illinois as ND for WICS-TV in Springfield.
