October 4, 2010

Greetings:

This week’s ONE new ND opening comes at a network o-and-o in a large market…and it’s a veteran ND’s retirement that created the vacancy.  ANd we have  TWO new NDs…at least new to their current stations.  Both have been NDs before.

That leaves our list of open ND positions at  24.

Winter’s coming.  If you’re thinking warm weather sounds good, we have a new ad this week for a Digital Media Manager position in California.  And we’re re-running last week’s ad for two positions in Florida.

We’ve a new job or two in Other News Management Openings, an obituary for a Texas EP, details about some managers on the move, and a way that you…yes, YOU!…could be the News Director of the Year.

All that, and more…after this week’s changes.

New News Director Openings:

McEntee

McEntee

WAGA-TV, Atlanta, GA…longtime ND BUDD McENTEE retired Friday after 19 years as ND (and 28 years at this FOX o-and-o).  Budd joined the station as a producer and moved up, eventually becoming ND in 1991.  His retirement comes shortly after a new GM, BILL SCHNEIDER, joined the station.  More in this article.

News Directors Named:

Fabrizio

Fabrizio

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…DAN FABRIZIO will fill this open spot, at least for a few months.  GM STEVE DOERR tells me he’s not going to hire a permanent ND given the uncertain ownership situation of this ABC affiliate.  Steve and Dan worked together years ago at WSYX-TV in Columbus, OH.  Dan most recently was the ND for WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC.   He replaces B.J. FINNELL who left the station last month to take a PR job in Boston.  He’d been ND there for just over two years.

WGME-TV, Portland, ME…MIMI STRAWN has been named ND for this Sinclair owned CBS affiliate.  She’s a former ND at WVUE-TV in New Orleans, KJRH-TV in Tulsa, and WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL.  At WGME, she replaces ROBB ATKINSON who left the station earlier this summer to become Senior Director of Sales at CNN Newsource.  Robb was ND here for almost four years.

Obituary:

Williams

Williams

Our sympathy to the staff at KVUE-TV on the death of Executive Producer THEA WILLIAMS who died last week at the age of 45 after a long battle with breast cancer.  She’s survived by her family, including two children.  Thea worked at KVUE for 15 years, and previously worked at WJXT-TV in Jacksonville.  The station remembers her in this story.

Names in the News:

Congratulations to MATT PITZER. He’s been promoted to a Senior Producer Position at MSNBC. Matt has been the Assistant ND for WVIT-TV, the NBC owned station in Hartford, CT.

WSMV-TV has a new Assistant ND.  RYAN HAWES joins this Meredith owned NBC affiliate from another Meredith station, KPTV in Portland, OR.  Ryan was an EP there.

Cronan

Cronan

Former News Director MARGARET CRONAN has a new job.  She’s been named the Chief Communications Officer of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, a museum which attracts about a million visitors a year.  Margaret will also be working to increase media exposure, so if you need an expert on a constitutional issue, you can reach her at mcronan@constitutioncenter.org.  She’s been the head of TV for NAVTEQ for the last five years, since shortly after leaving WBAL-TV in Baltimore, one of two ND stops on her resume.  The other?  WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach, FL.

Congratulations to KPIX-TV in San Francisco, KHOU-TV in Houston, and KSTP-TV in Minneapolis.  All three stations won Regional Reporting Awards in the National News and Documentary Awards.  CBS won the most awards among the networks.  Here’s the full list.

How’s your ego?  You can nominate yourself for News Director of the Year, as chosen by Broadcasting & Cable.  (Of course, you could also nominate someone who actually deserves the award.)   The magazine will also chose a GM of the year in three different market sizes. More details here.

September 24, 2010

September 29, 2010 UPDATE:

McEntee

McEntee

BUDD McENTEE, longtime ND at Fox’s WAGA-TV in Atlanta, has announced his retirement, effective this Friday.  Budd’s been at the station for 28 years beginning as a producer, and has been the ND there since 1991.  His retirement comes just a few weeks after a new GM, BILL SCHNEIDER, joined the station.  More details in this article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

We’ll have more on this story, and all the week’s changes, in our regular weekly report which may be delayed by travel this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

For the first time in 14 years of doing this newsletter, I get to use the word sordid this week.  (Ya’ just don’t get enough chances to use it.)  That’s in Names in the News.

Before you read about what I call a ‘sordid mess’, you’ll read about  TWO new ND’s who were named this week, though they won’t be new to you because we highlighted them in a mid-week UPDATE.  And, to the best of my knowledge, there are  NO new ND openings.

That brings our always unofficial count of ND openings to  25.

We do have a new ad this week from a station with two new management positions in sunny Florida.  That’s below, along with some other, non-sordid items in Names in the News.

But first, details about two newly named NDs:

New News Directors Named:

Clinkingbeard

Clinkingbeard

WFMY-TV, Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem, NC…BOB CLINKINGBEARD has been named ND for this CBS affiliate.  Bob’s been doing media training since he left the ND position at WOFL-TV in Orlando in 2008.  He’s also been an ND for WITI-TV in Milwaukee.  It’s a reunion with Gannett for Bob, who earlier in his career had been the Assistant ND for WUSA-TV in Washington, DC.  He’s also worked in Detroit (twice), Philadelphia, Baltimore, Birmingham, Alexandria, LA, and Columbia, MO.  He replaces JIM PLATZER who left this CBS affiliate in March after less than a year as ND.

Lanni

Lanni

WJAR-TV, Providence, RI…readers of a certain age will remember a song by The Who with lyrics that included:  “Meet the new boss.  Same as the old boss.” That’s the story here as CHRIS LANNI has been promoted to News Director.  Chris is the Content Brand Manager but has overseen the newsroom since BETTY JO CUGINI was laid off in April, 2009 after 8 years as ND and 22 at the station.  Chris now has the title of ND.  He’s a Rhode Island native who worked at WPRI in Providence earlier in his career.  He’s also worked in West Palm Beach and Boston.  WJAR is an NBC affiliate and is owned by Media General.

A federal judge in Portland, OR, rejected the terms of a plea deal between prosecutors and former KOIN-TV ND JEFF ALAN (legal name: JEFF ALAN BRENT) and sentenced him to the maximum 18 months in prison.  He’ll also have to pay fines and restitution.  The Portland Oregonian sorts out the whole sordid mess here.

BRENDA PAVILLIAN has been promoted to Assistant ND for KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.  She’s been the Managing Editor for this CBS o-and-o, where she started nine years ago as an overnight writer.  She worked her way up to producer and managing editor.  Brenda earlier worked at WTAE-TV there.

JULIE HOLTON is joining WISH-TV here in Indianapolis as an Executive Producer.  She’s been working at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis.  And ADAM KRENT has also been named an EP at this CBS affiliate:  he’s been the Senior Producer there.

Former San Diego, Fresno and Salt Lake City ND GEOFF ROTH is leaving academia to become the Executive Producer at KRIV-TV in Houston.  Geoff’s been teaching at Hofstra University for just over a year.  He’s also worked in Pittsburgh, Washington, Denver, Miami, Richmond and Jacksonville, FL.

September 18, 2010

September 22, 2010 UPDATE:

As teased in last week’s newsletter, one of the 27 open positions on our list has been filled.  Actually, two of them have, and we have details on both.

Clinkingbeard

Clinkingbeard

Veteran News Director BOB CLINKINGBEARD returns to the chair as he’s been named ND for WFMY-TV in Greensboro/Winston-Salem, NC.  That’s the CBS affiliate there.  Bob’s been doing media training since he left WOFL-TV in Orlando in 2008 after three years as ND.  He’d also been the ND for WITI-TV in Milwaukee.  It’s a return to Gannett for Bob, who was the Assistant ND for the company’s WUSA-TV in Washington earlier in his career.  He’s also worked in Detroit (on two separate occasions), Philadelphia, Baltimore, Birmingham, Alexandria, LA, and Columbia, MO.  He replaces JIM PLATZER who left the station last March after less than a year as ND.

Lanni

Lanni

WJAR-TV, the Media General owned NBC affiliate in Providence, has promoted CHRIS LANNI to be ND there.  Chris is the Content Brand Manager and has been in charge of the newsroom since BETTY JO CUGINI was laid off in April, 2009, after eight years as ND and 22 at the station.  Chris is a Rhode Island native, and has also worked in West Palm Beach and Boston, in addition to an earlier stint at another Providence station.

More on these stories and all the week’s developments in our next full newsletter.

Greetings:

Lots of activity this week, all of it involving veteran news directors.  There are  THREE new openings while we’ll introduce you to FOUR newly-named NDs, all with past time in the ND chair.

That brings our count of open ND jobs to 27, though we expect at least one of those openings to be filled early next week.  (A weak tease, I know, but I’ll post the news on this website when it happens.)

We’ve updated one of the three ads from last week that repeat this week…the opening in Cedar Rapids, IA.  And we’ve freshened up the list of Other News Management Openings.

We’ll also mourn the passing of a legendary news director who was one of the founders of what is now RTDNA. In Names in the News, we’ll tell you of some new jobs for a few managers, and a one-time ND and past editor of Shoptalk launches his new website.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…B.J. FINNELL is leaving as ND here to move into public relations.  He’s joining the Regan Communications Group in Boston as a senior executive.  B.J.’s been the ND here since April, 2008, has previously been an ND at WJAR-TV in Providence and WVIT-TV in Hartford, and worked as an Assistant ND in Philadelphia and Cleveland.  WLNE is an ABC affiliate.  Station owner Global Broadcasting (co-founded by former Meredith executive KEVIN O’BRIEN) filed for receivership in July.

KTEN-TV, Denison, TX…this NBC affiliate is now looking for an ND.  GM CRAIG MARRS has been wearing both the GM and ND hats since STEVE KORIOTH left in May, 2009, but he now tells me he’s looking to hire an ND.  KTEN is owned by the Lockwood Broadcast Group.

KPLC-TV, Lake Charles, LA…SCOTT FLANNIGAN is leaving one Raycom-owned station to compete against another.  He’s been named ND at WCBD-TV in Charleston, SC.  (More on that below).  He’s been the ND for this NBC affiliate for almost four years.

Newly Named News Directors:

Sanders

Sanders

WDBD-TV, Jackson, MS…STAN SANDERS returns to a newsroom as the new ND for this Jackson Broadcasting owned FOX affiliate.  Stan’s spent ten years as ND for WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH, leaving that NBC affiliate in January, 2009.  Since then he’s been the Director of the Student Media Center at the University of Southern Mississippi.  At WDBD, he replaces MIKE INGALLS, the first ND in WDBD history, who left the station in July after 2 1/2 years.

WCBD-TV, Charleston, SC…as noted above, SCOTT FLANNIGAN will be the next ND for this Media General owned NBC affiliate.  Scott spent the last four years as ND for Raycom’s KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, LA.  In his new role, he’ll compete against’ Raycom’s WSCS-TV.  He replaces DAN FABRIZIO who left the station in July after almost three years as news director.

KHAS-TV, Hastings, NE…veteran news director JACK BOWE will be the next ND here.  Jack’s been an ND in Reno, Bakersfield, and Panama City, FL.  He’s currently producing for KRNV-TV in Reno.  At KHAS, he’ll replaces DENNIS KELLOGG who left this Hoak Media owned NBC affiliate last month after 12 years as ND.  Dennis now the ND for Nebraska Educational Television.

WVIR-TV, Charlottesville, VA…DAVID FOKY has been promoted to news director for this NBC affiliate.  He has been the Assistant ND, has previously been an ND in Lexington, KY, an EP in Raleigh, and has worked in St. Louis, Chattanooga, and Roanoke, VA.  He replaces NEAL BENNETT who left this locally owned station to become an Assistant ND in West Palm Beach.

September 10, 2010

Greetings:

TWO new openings for news directors in this week’s report (both from stations owned by the same company), and, to my knowledge, NO new news directors have been hired in the past week.

That leaves our count of open ND jobs at 28.

One of those open ND jobs is featured in one of our three new help wanted ads this week, and that’s the ND opening at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati.  There a new ad for a Morning EP position in Tulsa, and an ad for a Senior Manager News Operations for the Source Media Group in Cedar Rapids, which oversees KCRG-TV, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, and many websites.  (Learn more about this operation here.)  And we’re re-running four ads that debuted last week for management openings in Detroit, Portland, OR, Cincinnati, and a faculty position at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

We do have an obituary for a former Texas News Director, and, in this holiday shortened week, just one item in Names in the News.

That’s all below after this week’s two ND openings:

New News Director Openings:
