September 6, 2010

Greetings:

We’re slightly delayed due to holiday travel, but that doesn’t mean that we’re lacking for news.  There are new ND’s at THREE stations and  ONE new opening.

That brings our always unofficial tally of open ND positions to  27.

We have four new ads for jobs in Detroit, Portland, OR, Cincinnati, and a faculty position at the University of Missouri School of Journalism which would involve work at the University’s NBC affiliate, KOMU-TV.

In Names in the News, we have information about a mini-stroke suffered by a longtime Michigan ND, news of the first grandchild for an ND turned General Managers, and details about the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a Kansas City Assignment Editor.

But first, this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WKRC-TV, Cincinnati, OH…ELBERT TUCKER is leaving this Newport owned CBS affiliate to become ND for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH.  More on that below.  Elbert has been ND here since 2001, and worked at the station since 1992.

New News Directors Named:

KIAH-TV, Houston, TX…GARY JAFFE will head the news department for this Tribune owned CW affiliate.  He’ll have the title of Executive Producer.  KIAH is planning a different type of news presentation, and Gary’s background is different as well, as listed on his Linkedin bio (you may need to register to see it).  At KIAH, he replaces KYANN LEWIS who left the station to become VP of Lifestyle Content for Fisher Broadcasting.  KyAnn was ND there for about two years.

KUTV, Salt Lake City, UT…JENNIFER DAHL returns to this CBS affiliate after two years away.  She’s been working for Tribune/LocalTV as Director of News and Media Strategies since 2008, but was the Assistant ND at KUTV before that.  She replaces STEVE HERTZKE who will remain with the station as a Special Projects Producer.  Steve was promoted to ND for this Four Points Media owned station in April, 2009, but has worked there for years in a variety of roles.

WBNS-TV, Columbus, OH…as we told you in an UPDATE during the week, ELBERT TUCKER will be the next ND for this Dispatch Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate.  Elbert won’t have far to move…he’s currently the ND for Newport TV’s WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, the CBS affiliate in the Queen City.  He’s been ND there since 2001, and has worked at the station since 1992.  Elbert’s also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga.  At WBNS, he replaces JOHN CARDENAS who was promoted to GM for sister-Dispatch station WTHR-TV in Indianapolis earlier this summer.

WBNS-TV, the Dispatch Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate in Columbus, OH, has named ELBERT TUCKER as its next ND.  Elbert has been ND for Newport’s WKRC-TV since 2001, and has worked at the station since 1992.  He’s also worked in Birmingham and Chattanooga.  At WBNS, he replaces JOHN CARDENAS who was promoted last May to be GM of sister Dispatch station WTHR-TV in Indianapolis after eleven years as ND in Columbus.

We’ll have more on this story…and all this week’s changes…in our next full edition which may be slightly delayed due to holiday travel.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

It’s a busy week, with  THREE new ND openings,  TWO new NDs, two obituaries, and a host of items in Names in the News.

That brings our unofficial count of open ND jobs to 28.

We have paid help wanted ads for two of those new ND jobs, and ads for two other news management positions at strong stations.  And we’re re-running ads for another ND opening and for another management opening…you first saw those ads last week.

There’s news of the death of a veteran news director who held that job in three different places, as well as information on the passing of a legendary San Francisco anchorman who was the father of a former ND.  In Names in the News, a past RTDNA President has a new job, we have a management move for a morning EP, and new jobs for two former NDs.

All that follows this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WSBT-TV, South Bend, IN…MEG SAUER, longtime ND for this Schurz-owned CBS affiliate, has been reassigned to a new position as Content Manager, in which she’ll coordinate the day to day news coverage with other Schurz properties in South Bend.  She will report to the next ND.  You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

WTVM-TV, Columbus, GA…ANNE HOLMES has left this Raycom-owned ABC station after more than three years as ND.  She’d earlier worked as an EP in Philadelphia.  You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

WEAU-TV, Eau Claire, WI…JOHN LaPORTE is returning to Milwaukee as News Content Manager for WITI-TV, the FOX affiliate there.  John’s a former ND for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, as well as in Palm Springs, CA.  He’s also worked in Houston, Green Bay, Albany, NY, Hartford, and Omaha.  John’s been ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate since last September.

New News Directors Named:

Cavanaugh

Cavanaugh

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…KERRI CAVANAUGH will be the next ND for this FOX affiliate.  Kerri most recently was ND for WSFL-TV in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, which shut down its news operation recently.  The station produced a morning show in conjunction with the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.  WXMI, WSFL, and The Sun-Sentinel all are owned by Tribune.  Earlier, Kerri spent more than ten years with WFTS-TV in Tampa, and also worked in West Palm Beach and Tuscaloosa, AL.  At WXMI, she replaces TIM DYE, the only ND in WXMI’s history, who became ND for WXYZ-TV in Detroit in July.

KIEM-TV, Eureka, CA…BETSY LAMBERT is the new ND and anchor for this NBC affiliate.  She’s been a reporter in Bakersfield, has worked as a producer in Salt LAke City, and began her career as a reporter in Idaho Falls, ID.  She replaces LESLIE BUCHANAN who left (after two years as ND) to spend more time with her family and her one year old son.  KIEM is owned by Pollack/Belz Communications.

Obituaries:

Little

I’m sorry to tell you that ALAN LITTLE died Tuesday after a long illness.  Alan began his career as a photographer, transitioned to the assignment desk, and worked as a special projects producer at stations in Orlando, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Houston, often working with his friend BOB JORDAN, the ND at WFTV in Orlando.  Alan was the first ND for KABB-TV, the FOX affiliate in San Antonio TX.  He later worked for the now-shuttered San Antonio News Channel, briefly worked as an ND in Arkansas and Kentucky, and worked for BrightHouse Networks in Florida.

Longtime San Francisco anchor DAVE McELHATTON died Monday of a stroke related illness.  He was 81.  Dave was the father of the late TERRY McELHATTON, who spent about ten years as ND for KNTV in San Francisco.  Terry also worked in Denver.  Sadly, Terry died in 2008 from a heart attack.

August 21, 2010

Greetings:

We have quite a flurry of newly named NDs this week…SIX in fact, and just  ONE new ND opening.   That brings the number of total openings to  27. And those new NDs range from market # 2 to much smaller markets and include several veteran NDs whose names you might recognize.

We do have a paid ad for the one new ND opening, as well as a re-run of an ad for an EP opening in San Diego that we first shared with you last month.  And we have two ND ads and an EP ad that ran last week.

In Names in the News, details about an EP who is changing jobs but only needs to change one letter in her new calls.  There’s a new look at the 1970 death of a Los Angeles ND, we have details about the passing of the wife of a long-ago ND, and happier news about the 50th wedding anniversary for a man who may hold the longevity record for a large market ND position.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes:

New News Directors Named:

KVEA/KWHY-TV, Los Angeles, CA…RICK MORALES has been promoted VP/Content for this Telemundo owned duopoly.  He’s been at the station for about ten years, most recently as managing editor, and previously worked for Univision in Los Angeles.  He replaces ESTEBAN CRESTE who left the station in February after less than two years as ND there.

Soares

Soares

WJHL-TV, Johnson City, TN…JOHN SOARES is the new ND here.  John is on the faculty at Cal State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, CA, where he also works at KSBY-TV as an anchor and reporter.  According to the email sent to the staff at WJHL, John has both a law degree and a masters from Emerson University and once worked as a stone mason.  He replaces NEAL BOLING who left the station in January to become Executive ND for Content and Promotion for KHQ-TV in Spokane, WA.  Neal was ND for this Media General owned CBS affiliate for two years.

KIVI-TV, Boise, ID…TAUNA LANGE returns home to her native Idaho as ND for this Journal Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate.  Tauna most recently was ND at XETV in San Diego, a job she left last month.  She’s also been an ND in Honolulu and Albuquerque, but began her career as a reporter in Idaho Falls.  She’s also worked in Portland, OR.  At KIVI, she replaces ROBBY MESSER who left the station in May after 16 months as the ND here to become a morning EP for KOB-TV in Albuquerque.

Griff

Potter

KVLY/KXJB-TV, Fargo, ND…veteran newsman GRIFF POTTER will be the next ND for this Hoak Media duopoly.  Griff’s been an ND in Paducah, KY, and Quad Cities, IL, an assistant ND in Milwaukee, and an EP or producer in Nashville, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Kansas City, and Huntsville, AL.  He’s also worked in Toledo.  At KVLY/KXJB, he replaces JEREMIAH MOERKE who is stepping aside as ND but will stay at the station in a yet-to-be-determined role.

WGXA-TV, Macon, GA…GEORGE JOBIN has rejoined this Frontier Broadcasting owned FOX affiliate as ND.  He worked at the station from 1992-2001, first in sports, then as Assignment Editor and EP, and worked his way to Station Manager.  He also was GM for WMGT-TV in Macon.  He replaces ALEXIA RIDLEY who left the station in May.

WRBL-TV, Columbus, GA…STEVE KORIOTH has been named ND for this Media General owned CBS affiliate.  Steve most recently spent a short time as EP and later Assistant ND for WKOW-TV in Madison, WI, and spent six years as ND for KTEN-TV in Denison, TX.  He’s also worked in Huntsville, AL, Tucson, Dallas and Chicago.  At WRBL, he replaces CHRISTINE TANAKA who left the station last month for a new job at Media General’s station in Columbus, OH, after four years as ND here.

New News Director Openings:

Names in the News:

It’s not often you can change jobs and only change one letter in your employer’s calls, but LISA BLEGEN has done just that.  She’s been named EP/Special Projects & Investigations for KTVT-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Dallas/Ft. Worth.  She’s been working at WTVT-TV in Tampa, where she’s headed the investigative unit since 1997.  She’s also worked as a reporter in Milwaukee and as a Special Projects EP in North Carolina.

JUDY GREENE has a new job with much different call letters but she probably won’t have to move.  She’s the new Morning EP for KVVU-TV, the FOX affiliate in Las Vegas.  She’s worked at KSNV-TV in Las Vegas (formerly KVBC-TV) for the past 12 years.

Congratulations to our good friend and longtime WISH-TV (Indianapolis) News Director LEE GILES, and his wife DIANE, as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today (Friday, August 20th).  Lee spent 40 years at WISH, 35 as the news director there, before retiring in 2003.  Lee and Diane still live in the Indianapolis area, where you can often find him on a golf course.  They are going on an Alaskan cruise next month to celebrate.  If you’d like to wish him well, his email is: leegiles8@gmail.com

A civilian watchdog agency in Los Angeles is looking into the 1970 murder of KMEX-TV News Director RUBEN SALAZAR.  The Los Angeles Times has the latest in this story.

Finally, our sympathy to friend and former colleague PATRICK DENNIS whose wife CANDI died last week from complications from what was supposed to be routine (if somewhat complex) back surgery.  She was 63 years old.  Pat now works as a criminal prosecution paralegal for the Maricopa (AZ) County Attorney’s office.  Many years ago, Pat was my EP when I was the ND at WTOL-TV in Toledo.  He later was ND for WTVG-TV in Toledo, and also worked in Columbia, MO, Green Bay, Detroit, Oklahoma City, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Springfield, MO, Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Honolulu.  Friends can send a note of sympathy to: pldennis@live.com

August 13, 2010

Greetings:

Perhaps we can blame the hot weather across the country for a slow week in news director changes.

I know of only  ONE new ND opening this week and ONE newly named ND to include in this week’s report.  That means our list of open ND positions remains at 32.

Actually, there are TWO new ND openings this week.  One I’ll tell you about below, and the other one is in a blind box ad we’re running this week from our friends at Talent Dynamics.  Save yourself an email or phone call, by the way.  I don’t know the station for the blind box ad.  (Even if I did know, I wouldn’t tell you….especially you.)

That blind box ad is one of three new ads this week, and the other two are in pretty appealing locales:  one for an ND opening in San Diego, and a relisting of an ad for an EP in Orlando that we first ran last month.  We’re also repeating ads for EP jobs in Cleveland and New Bern, NC.

There are two obituaries this week:  one’s for a veteran newsman who held ND jobs in several cities, and the other for a Houston Assignment Editor, and just one Name in the News.  (We’re always on the lookout for items:  send ’em my way at:  rick@rickgevers.com)

Those items are below after this week’s changes:

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR NAMED:

KCPQ-TV, Seattle, WA…JON BRADY has been named ND for this Tribune-owned Fox Affiliate.  Jon is currently the bureau chief for the Fox News Channel bureau in Los Angeles and previously worked for Fox in New York.  He’s also worked at Fox stations in Miami and Washington, DC.  At KCPQ, he replaces STEVE KRAYCIK who resigned in May and is now the Assistant ND at KOMO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Seattle.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENING:

KHAS-TV, Hastings, NE…DENNIS KELLOGG is leaving this Hoak Media owned station to become ND for Nebraska Educational Television, aka NET. Dennis has been the ND for more than 12 years in Hastings.  He’ll move to Lincoln for his new job with NET.
