Greetings:

We have just a few changes to share with you in this week’s newsletter.

There’s ONE new opening in a top 25 market. and ONE new ND to report. That brings the number of openings to 23.

Please note that we have removed CLTV from the list of openings, as WGN-TV ND GREG CAPUTO will assume responsibilities for that Tribune-owned cable news operation when CLTV moves to the WGN facility.

We have a paid ad this week for that one new opening…if you’re looking for a new opportunity, be sure to check that out.

There’s an obituary for a former Kansas and Iowa ND and anchor, and a few new news manager promotions, as well. And we’ll share a link to an essay explaining why investigative reporting is not only good journalism, it can be good for business and ratings, too.

KPTV/KPDX-TV, Portland, OR…PATRICK McCREERY has been ND and GM here for a while, and is now looking for a news director so he can concentrate on his GM responsibilities. NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WTXL-TV, Tallahassee, FL…veteran ND BILL CUMMINGS will be the next ND for this Calkins Media owned ABC affiliate. Bill most recently has been working for weather vendor Baron Services, but is a former ND in Evansville, Tucson, Huntington, WV, and Tri-Cities, TN. He replaces KEITH WHEELER who left the station last August after six months as ND>

NEWS DIRECTOR, KPTV/KPDX-TV, PORTLAND, OR

Position Summary:

Oversee the operations and management of the News department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Develop daily informative and entertaining newscasts. Hire, train, supervise, and motivate news department personnel. Maintain consistent execution of goals.
Monitor the newscast for accurate editorial content while keeping the brand vision on track.
Work with Programming Consultants and Promotion department to develop effective news promotion.
Develop news operating budget and keep expenses within guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications – All must be met to be considered:

College degree in Journalism or related field. Five years in television news management. Knowledge of budgeting, promotion, journalism, and news production.

Skills and Abilities:

Must know the elements of a good television newscast.
Understand the importance of promotion and branding a newscast.
Must have knowledge of budgeting.
Excellent people skills are a must.
Monitor competition and industry trends

OBITUARY:

I’m sorry to report the death of JON POSTON, a former news director in Wichita (then KTVH-TV) and Sioux City, IA (KMEG-TV), where he also anchored. Jon died last weekend of a massive stroke in Arizona, where he had been working in public relations for the last few years. More details on Jon’s passing in this article from the Sioux City Journal.

For the second week in a row, we have new ND openings to tell you about and no new NDs to share with you.

This week, FOUR new ND openings, resulting in, by my count, 24 stations looking for a news director.

In Names in the News, we’ll tell you about a former ND turned station manager who’s been bumped up to GM.

NEW NEWS DIRECTOR OPENINGS:

KXTV, Sacramento, CA…STACY OWEN has resigned as ND of this Gannett-owned ABC affiliate, where she’s been the news director since July, 2005. She’s also been an ND for KRON-TV in San Francisco.

KTVE/KARD-TV, West Monroe, LA…RANDALL KAMM has left this Nexstar-owned NBC/FOX duopoly after a little more than two years as ND. Randall also was an anchor here.

KTUU-TV, Anchorage, AL…STEVE MacDONALD has left the Schurz Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate after just six months as ND. Steve has worked for KTUU for more than a dozen years as a reporter and anchor before being promoted to ND last year.

KSAX-TV, Alexandria, MN…this Hubbard owned satellite station of KSTP-TV in Minneapolis is advertising for a new ND. My records show SARAH CASUELLO had been the ND there since June, 2007. The station airs three local news updates within KSTP’s news, and does not have a stand alone newscast.

Greetings:

It’s a complete reversal of last week’s report, where had lots of new NDs to tell you about, and no openings.

This week, FOUR new ND openings, and I’m not aware of any new NDs named in the past week. By my count, there are now 20 stations ooking for a news director.

If you’re a Buckeye fan, one of this week’s openings means there are now two open ND jobs in Columbus. And you football fans out there will be most jealous of a new job for a former ND. Read about that in Names in the News.

We also have some new news manager openings, all in Florida.

WCMH-TV, Columbus, OH…STAN SANDERS was among the victims as Media General laid off a number of people at this NBC affiliate. Stan’s been the ND here for ten years.

WFMY-TV, Greensboro, NC…GINA KATZMARK has resigned as ND of this Gannett owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the ND here for 3 1/2 years and had earlier been the ND at WBTW-TV in Florence, SC.

Ft. Wayne, IN….this Nexstar owned FOX affiliate is looking for an ND/Anchor as it is planning to start a newscast.

WHOI-TV, Peoria, IL…JOLIE ALOIS is leaving her job as ND for this Barringon owned ABC affiliate. She’s been named Development Director for the Easter Seals of Central Illinois. Jolie has been the ND here for the last three years and was EP there before that. She’s also worked in St. Louis.

Former News Director (Baltimore, Columbus) DAVID SILVERSTEIN has a new job that many of you might envy. He’s been named Director of Communications for the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, preparing for Super Bowl (can I even use those words without the NFL trying to sue me?) XLIV in Miami next year. David tells me it’s a dream job that allow him and his family to return to South Florida, where he worked earlier in his career. Since leaving WMAR-TV in Baltimore last March, David’s been freelancing for the Pentagon Channel and teaching at the University of Maryland. Greetings:

A busy week leads to a VERY short list of open news director positions.

In all, SIX new NDs were named this week, filling five of the vacancies we’ve been reporting. And in Chicago, a new ND was named at a station where the incumbent was being promoted.

I’m not aware of any new openings, with an asterisk attached to that statement. I’ll explain THAT in Names in the News.

That means my count of open ND positions now stands at 16! I’ve been sending this list out for more than 12 years (in one form or another) and that’s the lowest number of open jobs that I can remember.

NEW NEWS DIRECTORS NAMED:

WFLD-TV, Chicago, IL…as we told you yesterday in an emailed UPDATE, CAROL FOWLER completes the Windy City hat trick as she becomes ND for this FOX o-and-o, her third such job in Chicago. Carol most recently spent six years as ND for CBS’s WBBM-TV and earlier had been ND for WGN-TV. She replaces current ND ANDREW FINLAYSON who has been named Director of Online Content and Business Development for the FOX station group. Andrew’s been ND here for three years after stints as an ND in Nashville and San Francisco/Oakland.

WXIN-TV, Indianapolis, IN…LEE ROSENTHAL has been named ND for this Tribune-owned FOX affiliate. Lee is currently the Nightside EP for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH. He’s also worked in Tampa, Knoxville, and Binghamton, NY, where he began his career as an anchor/reporter. At WXIN, Lee replaces GAVIN MALISKA who became ND at WOFL-TV in Orlando last December after 2 1/2 years as ND at WXIN.

KGTV, San Diego, CA…JOEL DAVIS returns to California and to an ND position as he’s been named news director for this McGraw-Hill owned ABC affiliate. Joel is currently the Managing Editor for WFTV in Orlando, a job he’s held since 2006. Before that he spent six years as ND for KFSN-TV in Fresno. Joel’s also been an ND in Bakersfield, and worked on-air in Columbus, OH, and Waterloo, IA. At KGTV, he replaces GARY BROWN who left the station last March to become VP/News for Newport Television.

WKBW-TV, Buffalo, NY…this Granite owned ABC affiliate promoted JOHN DiSCIULLO to news director. John has been the Director of Programming, Creative Services, Production, Graphic and Community Affairs here. He’ll still oversee Community Affairs. John replaces GLEN HORN who left the station at the end of 2008 after almost two years as ND.

WFTX-TV, Ft. Myers, FL…FRANK VERDEL is also moving back into the ND’s chair as he takes over the news department for this Journal Broadcasting owned FOX affiliate. Frank most recently has been working for a video production company in Sarasota, but has been an ND in Huntsville and West Palm Beach, as well as GM for SNN6, a cable news operation in Sarasota. He replaces FORREST CARR who left the station last fall after three years as ND to take the ND job at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque.

KION/KCBA, Salinas/Monterey, CA…TRACIANN ZERAVICA is the new ND for this Cowles California Media owned duopoly. She has been an EP at KHQ-TV in Spokane, concentrating on internet responsibilities. She’s also worked in Miami, Cleveland, Columbus, Orlando and Providence. Traciann replaces DENISE CLODJEAUX who left the station last month after almost five years as ND.

OBITUARY

A memorial service will be held this Sunday, 1/25/09, for STEVE BROCK, a longtime Columbus, OH, newsman. We told you last week that Steve had died suddenly of an enlarged heart at the age of 48. He’d worked for three stations in Columbus, and was employed at WBNS-TV at the time of his death. Sunday’s service will be held at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road in Columbus, from 2:00-4:00 PM. Steve was survived by his parents and a sister. In lieu of flowers, the family suggestions donations to the American Heart Association.

NAMES in the NEWS:

Congratulations to WTHR-TV General Manager JIM TELLUS who’s been named President and GM of this Indianapolis NBC affiliate. Jim had been VP/GM there. He was promoted to GM one year ago, after serving just over a year as ND for this Dispatch Broadcasting owned station. Jim’s also been an ND in Seattle, Norfolk, and Wichita.

And here’s the asterisk behind the “No New Openings” statement above:

Spanish language broadcaster Entravision eliminated the jobs of two NDs recently: MARIA del PILAR ORTIZ in Tampa and WILMA COLON in Orlando. I’m told the company has no immediate plans to replace them, and is not planning to replace ALEX BOSSCHAERTS at KLUZ-TV in Albuquerque. I have removed KLUZ from what is now a VERY short list of open ND positions.
