I hope you’re staying warm. It’s below zero here in Indianapolis and I know that would be warm for a lot of you!
TWO new news directors to tell you about: both are returning to stations where they had worked previously. And just ONE opening, created by one of those new NDs who is moving on.
That leaves 31 stations wiht ND openings. At least ONE of those will be filled this week.
Our friends at Stephen Arnold Music have a new ad…check it (and the ad for WMVision) out to thank them for their support of our efforts.
We have an obituary for a longtime TV critic who was widely read during his 40 years at The Washington Post.
There are new station managers at THREE Scripps stations, and a new GM at a Gray station in Georgia.
And we have two stories about network news leaders, one out of a job at Telemundo, and another under fire, at least to a New York newspaper report.

WLOS-TV, Asheville, NC…BRYAN QUEEN…who began his career here…returns as the next ND for this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate. Here’s the note to the staff. He’s spent the last 7+ years as ND for Sinclair’s WHP-TV(CBS) in Harrisburg, PA. Brian’s been an ND in Columbia, SC, Rochester, NY, and worked NBC NewsChannel in Charlotte and for MSNBC. At WLOS, he replaces BRIAN NEMITZ who left to be ND for WCCO-TV (CBS owned) in Minneapolis after 5 years as ND.

WJAX/WFOX-TV, Jacksonville, FL…JASON BALTHAZAR is back at this Cox owned duopoly (CBS/FOX), this time as ND. He worked there for two years before returning to WFTV in Orlando where he’s been managing editor in his second stint at that ABC affiliate. WJAX/WFOX GM BOB LONGO sent this note to employees. Jason replaces LISA BLEGEN who left after the November book to spend more time with her aging parents.

TOM SHALES, who was the longtime television critic for The Washington Post (back when newspapers HAD television critics) died January 13th of complications from Covid and renal failure. He worked for the Post for almost 40 years and was known for referring to people with nicknames, i.e. calling DAN RATHER “Gunga Dan” and TOM BROKAW “Duncan the Wonder Horse. PATSY LORIS, who’s been the Executive Vice President of News for Telemundo for the past two years, has exited, according to this story from Media Moves.
General Manager News and Notes:
Scripps has promoted three people to station manager positions. Two of those promoted, AUTUMN JONES and VICKI BRADLEY, will remain news directors at their stations, WFTX-TV (FOX) in Ft. Myers, and WTXL-TV (ABC) in Tallahassee. In most cases, Scripps has eliminated the GM positions at stations where it installed new station managers.
LIZ KNIGHT has been promoted to General Manager for Gray’s WALB-TV in Albany, GA. She’s been the general sales manager there for five years.
