December 27, 2015

Greetings:

I hope your holidays were happy and safe from the bad weather that ravaged some of the country.

It was likely a happy holiday for THREE people who landed new ND jobs this week. And there’s just ONE new opening that I know of. Our count of open ND jobs stands at 20.

ONE of those open ND jobs is among our TWO paid help wanted ads.

Broadcasting and Cable Magazine issued some “Best of the Year’ awards in several categories, and both the GMs honored are former news directors. More on that in Names in the News, along with a longtime Magid employee who departs for a new job, a new EP in New York, and several other management moves.

All that and more below.

Barring a mid-week update, we’ll see you next year!

For those who missed our note earlier this week, BARBARA FRYE is retiring after 38 years at Magid. Her current title is VP/Talent Placement Services: in that role she aided the careers of hundreds of broadcasters, both on and off-air. Many of those she helped probably never knew of her involvement. Earlier in her career she worked at Channel 13 in Indianapolis, where she worked with DAVID LETTERMAN. Barb’s stepping down at the end of the year. She’d welcome your friendly note to: barbarafrye600@gmail.com

Wednesday, December 7, 2015 UPDATE:

Two significant developments to share with you today.

Phillip Bruce

Bruce

First, word from Houston that KHOU-TV News Director PHILLIP BRUCE will leave this Tegna owned station at the end of January. He’s been the ND for the CBS affiliate for almost five years, and his background is a bit more diverse than many NDs. He’s worked for NPR, was ND for a PBS station in Los Angeles, and worked as a reporter and anchor for a variety of stations. More on his Linkedin page.

Frye

Frye

Second, after more than 38 years at Magid, BARBARA FRYE will retire at the end of the year (though she told me she despises that word). Barb’s current title is VP/Talent Placement Services and in that role she has touched hundreds, if not thousands of careers, of people in our industry. Barb’s always been a delight to work with, and, besides, is a huge Indy 500 fan! (I snapped this picture at the 2008 Indy 500.) You can send her a kind note via email to: barbarafrye600@gmail.com

It’s shaping up to be a busy week. We’ll have all the latest in our full newsletter this weekend.

Greetings:

We’re late but full of news, with details about FOUR newly named news directors and TWO new openings, both in Louisiana.

Those changes drop our count of open ND jobs to 18.

We have ads for THREE news management jobs, including one in Boston.

And lots of items in Names in the News, including information about a longtime Florida news director and anchor who’s in critical condition after an apparent stroke. And there’s a story about a California news director who spends some of his evenings at the ballet…as a performer.

We also have an obituary for a ground breaking CBS news manager.

Have a great week!
