Greetings:

I hope your holidays were happy and safe from the bad weather that ravaged some of the country.

It was likely a happy holiday for THREE people who landed new ND jobs this week. And there’s just ONE new opening that I know of. Our count of open ND jobs stands at 20.

ONE of those open ND jobs is among our TWO paid help wanted ads.

Broadcasting and Cable Magazine issued some “Best of the Year’ awards in several categories, and both the GMs honored are former news directors. More on that in Names in the News, along with a longtime Magid employee who departs for a new job, a new EP in New York, and several other management moves.

New News Director Openings:

Finch

WBRC-TV, Birmingham, AL…this Raycom Media opening is looking to replace JAMES FINCH who’s been promoted to a Regional News Director position with the company. He’ll continue to be based in Birmingham. James first joined this FOX affiliate almost 20 years ago as a photojournalist and producer. KHBS/KHOG-TV, Ft. Smith, AR…COLLEEN CLEMENT will be the next news director for this Hearst owned duopoly. She’s spent the last 15 years working for WXYZ-TV in Detroit in a variety of roles, most recently as executive producer. She’s a former news director in Alpena, MI, spent five years as a producer in Madison, WI, and worked in Milwaukee. She replaces GREG SHEPPHERD, promoted within Hearst to ND for KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, after three years here.

Jones

WMAZ-TV, Macon, GA…LORRA LYNCH JONES has been promoted to news director for this Tegna owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the 5:00 anchor there and posted this video telling viewers of her promotion. You can read her (as yet un-updated) station bio here where you’ll learn she’s married to the station’s chief meteorologist, BEN JONES. She replaces JEFF OFGANG who retired last September when he had a chance to relocate to Savannah to be closer to family. Jeff was ND almost ten years.

WTVA-TV, Tupelo, MS…STEVE ROGERS will be the next ND for this Heartland Media owned NBC/ABC affiliate. He’s been a reporter for this station since July, is a former interim news director in Columbus, MS, and has a wide background in print journalism. He was graduated from Yale University (the first time I’ve used that phrase in this newsletter.) More on Steve in this station news release. He replaces DAVE BEECH who left the station after 2+ years as news director.

WTKR (CBS) in Norfolk is looking for someone who has a passion for news, loves to showcase content, is aggressive with breaking news coverage and ready to be an Assistant News Director!

This person will help lead a growing station and help drive the editorial content for all WTKR/WGNT newscasts. This means constantly mentoring our reporters and producers as they generate memorable content for all of our platforms: websites, mobile devices, social networking sites and local news broadcasts.

Qualified candidate must have excellent writing skills and news judgement as well as know what it takes to craft a successful newscast that appeals to our viewers.

This is a senior management position, perfect for the aspiring news director.

EXPECTATIONS:

*Be able to shine at showcasing our content whether it’s a special project or daily news.
*Manage and coordinate all aspects of newsroom operation with direct responsibility to staff scheduling, special projects and special events.
*Participate in the hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
*Ensures quality news, sports and weather presentation through consistent writing and graphics.
*Oversees pre-planning for news specials and special assignments and works closely with executive producers to ensure aggressive, competitive and compelling newscasts.
*Creates and coordinates editorial projects across corporate lines. Assists in developing overall editorial and promotional strategy to increase ratings.

Qualifications:

This position requires an undergraduate degree in journalism or equivalent coursework. Minimum of 7 years newscast producing, reporting and/or assignment desk management experience required. Previous management experience is a must. Also must demonstrate proven track record at guiding a successful news operation.

CHRIS KNOWLES, who’s worked for WPIX-TV in New York for more than nine years, has been promoted to executive producer. He’s worked both on and and off-air for this Tribune owned CW affiliate.

WMTW-TV in Portland, ME, has prompted CYNTHIA JOHNSON to morning executive producer. She has been the nightside EP for this Hearst owned ABC affiliate.

And our apologies to JASON VINKLER whose name I misspelled (or, I believe, auto-correct misspelled it for me!) in reporting his move to Assistant ND for WKBN-TV in Youngstown.

Raycom Media has named a new Regional News Director.

It’s JAMES FINCH, who’s been the news director for the company’s FOX affiliate in Birmingham, WBRC-TV, for more than seven years. He’s first joined the station almost 20 years ago as a photojournalist and producer, and moved into news management in 2000. James previously spent six years in the Marines as a combat correspondent.

Congratulations to KMOV-TV in St. Louis, WBAL-TV in Baltimore, and WRAL-TV in Raleigh. They were among 16 winners of Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards. The complete list is here.

In case you missed it, there were reports this week that NBC might be dropping Boston’s WHDH-TV as an affiliate. If that happens, it’d be the second time NBC parted company with a station owned by Sunbeam Broadcasting. The first was WSVN-TV (formerly WCKT-TV) in Miami in the late 80’s.

Veteran news director TIM GARDNER is back in a newsroom as the morning EP for WFAA-TV in Dallas. He most recently spent eight years as ND for WVTM-TV in Birmingham before leaving in June to move to Texas to be closer to family. He knows Texas well, having been an ND in San Antonio and two different stations in Austin.

Two management hires at KSTU-TV in Salt Lake City. JOSHUA BARLOW joins this Tribune owned FOX affiliate as Assistant ND. He’s worked for stations in Miami, Colorado Springs, Gainesville, and Pocatello, ID, both as a reporter and producer. He also worked for NBC NewsChannel. And SHANNEL POULSON has been named Dayside Executive Producer. She’s produced for two stations in Salt Lake City and two stations in Phoenix.

NIKKI NEWBROUGH moves from reporter to assignment editor at KWWL-TV in Waterloo, IA.

JASON VINKLER returns to WKBN/WYTV-TV in Youngstown, OH, as Assistant News Director. He started his career at WKBN, and rose from production assistant to EP and interim news director. He’s been a producer at sister station WIVB-TV in Buffalo for the past few years.

KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs has hired ABBY KAPPEL as its morning EP. She’s been a producer in Albany, NY, but previously worked in Grand Junction, CO.

Congratulations to longtime WBAY-TV (Green Bay) News Director TOM McCAREY who was scheduled to achieve one of his longtime goals yesterday. Tom retired from WBAY two years ago after 30 years as ND.

Several dozen years of news management (and more than a few years of RTDNA leadership) were represented in an Indianapolis restaurant Thursday afternoon at a luncheon of old friends. The attendees are hoping to make it an annual event. If you’ve been in the business a long time, chances are you’ve crossed paths with one of the people pictured below.

General Manager News:

Two weeks with NO GM moves to report, and this week we have TWO changes in Wichita alone.

KSNW-TV General Manager ERIK SCHRADER moves within Media General to become GM for WIAT-TV in Birmingham. Erik, a former ND in five markets, had been GM for KSNW for two years. He’s also worked in production, as a reporter, and as a sports director. He replaces another former news director turned GM, HELEN SWENSON, who’s moved to a corporate role within Media General.

At KAKE-TV, NEAL DAVIS will be the GM when Lockwood Broadcast Group takes completes its purchase of the ABC affiliate from Gray TV at the end of the year. He’s currently GM for two Lockwood stations in Knoxville. KAKE’s current GM, BRAD MOSES, will remain with the company in a new corporate role assisting newly acquired stations with the transition to Gray.

Another Knoxville GM, KELVIN MIZE, has been promoted by Raycom to become GM of its Lawton, OK, station, KSWO-TV.

TWO new news director openings, both in large markets, top this week’s report. And there’s ONE newly hired news director to tell you about, leaving our list of open news director jobs at just 19.

Before he joined this Tegna owned CBS affiliate, he was the Managing Director for NPR on the West Coast. XETV, San Diego, CA…DON SHAFER has left this CW affiliate owned by Bay City Televison after just over two years as news director. Don’s a former ND at another San Diego station, and has also worked in Colorado Springs, Denver, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Flint/Saginaw, MI, and Tallahassee, FL. His replacement will be the third news director in just over three years here.

Obituaries:

JOE MOORE, a former news director and long time anchor at WJHG-TV in Panama City, FL, died this week. Joe was 72. We told you last week that Joe had suffered a stroke. The local newspaper remembers him and reports on his funeral here.

REGGIE HALL, a longtime sports producer at Detroit’s WXYZ-TV in Detroit, died this week of injuries suffered in a automobile accident. He had just turned 58 the week before. More here.

DOUG RETHERFORD, the longtime news director for KWQC-TV in Davenport, IA, who died last month, had an unusual gift for his former station in his will. The details are here.

Friends and family will hold a ‘Celebration of Life’ for former news director TOM HAUFF early next year. First, word from Houston that KHOU-TV News Director PHILLIP BRUCE will leave this Tegna owned station at the end of January. He’s been the ND for the CBS affiliate for almost five years, and his background is a bit more diverse than many NDs. He’s worked for NPR, was ND for a PBS station in Los Angeles, and worked as a reporter and anchor for a variety of stations. More on his Linkedin page.

Second, after more than 38 years at Magid, BARBARA FRYE will retire at the end of the year (though she told me she despises that word). WBRE/WYOU-TV, Wilkes-Barre, PA…also returning to the ND chair is ROD JACKSON, who will take over from JIM DePURY at this Nexstar operated dupoply. Rod’s been the Assistant News Director for KSNT/KTMJ/KTKA (NBC/FOX/ABC) in Topeka. He’s a former ND in Cedar Rapids, spent 13 years as a producer for ABC’s NewsOne in Los Angeles, a managing editor in Salt Lake City, and worked as a reporter for 19 years before choosing an indoor job in management. 🙂 Jim is retiring at the end of the year: he’d been the ND here for 4 1/2 years.

Obituary:

HARRY RADCLIFFE II, the first African-American bureau chief for CBS News in London and a longtime 60 Minutes producer, died this week after a long battle with cancer. CBS remembers him in this obituary.

Longtime Panama City News Director and Anchor JOE MOORE is hospitalized in critical condition. He apparently suffered a stroke at his home on Friday and was found by neighbors. Joe worked at WJHG-TV from 1971 until his retirement in 2014. More details in this story from the Panama City News Herald.

JENELLE SHRINER returns to Austin and KVUE-TV. She’ll be the Assistant ND there. Jenelle had been an EP at KVUE before moving to Houston and an EP job at KPRC-TV. She’s also worked in Seattle, Ft. Myers, and Raleigh-Durham.

STEPHANIE WHEATLEY has been promoted from morning EP to Assistant ND at KSNV-TV in Las Vegas. The move continues her association with ND MARK NEERMAN. He first hired her as a videotape editor when he was the ND at KVVU-TV in Las Vegas. She advanced to producer and then EP before leaving the business for a marketing job. When Mark returned to Las Vegas at KSNV, he hired her again.
