Greetings:

We’re a little delayed this week, but not because of a lot of  ND openings.

For one of the few times in the 17+ years of this weekly effort, we have no news director changes this week. That means, of course, that our count of open ND jobs remains at a lower-than-normal 18.

But there are plenty of reasons for you to read on.

If you’re looking for a new opportunity, we have EIGHT help wanted ads. And we’ve freshened up our list of Other News Management Openings.

And in Names in the News, a number of news managers on the move, a one-time news directors returns to TV as a GM in California, and the retirements of two longtime industry veterans whose names you may know.

Find all of that below!

Lots of news this week.

We’ll start with two promotions at WRC-TV in Washington, where MATT GLASSMAN has been upped to Assistant News Director and CATHERINE SNYDER has been named Managing Editor. Matt’s a 13 year veteran of the NBC o-and-o, most recently as manager of news, press, and promotion. He’s also worked on the assignment desk and as coordinating producer of special projects. Catherine’s a longtime fixture in the market, having previously worked at WUSA-TV, CNBC, and MSNBC. She joined WRC in 2008 as Senior Manager of Content.

KFSN-TV in Fresno has a new Nightside EP.  JIM JAKOBS has been the Assistant ND for KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. He’s no stranger to California, having worked at two Sacramento stations and for the NBC o-and-o California bureau.

NOELLE KACHINSKY has been named EP for WCYB-TV in Bristol, VA. She’s currently working for WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, SC. Noelle’s also worked in Green Bay.

J. WARREN HOCKADAY, a former ND in Eureka, CA, has been named GM of a different Eureka station, KIEM-TV. It’s a return to TV for Warren, who’s spent the last 14 years as President and CEO of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce.

Two notable retirements this week.

FRANK GRAHAM, a former news director and longtime consultant, made his last station visit last week. Frank’s a former news director in Baltimore, news manager in Pittsburgh, Dayton, and Rockford. He served for many years as President of McHugh-Hoffman and founded Convergent Communications Consultants, Inc. (aka C3) 13 years ago. Frank tells me he and his wife Carol plan to concentrate on grandchildren, international travel, church and charitable activities. Your note of congratulations can be sent to him at: frank@c-cube.net.

Papper

And BOB PAPPER, who you may know for his longtime supervision of the RTDNA Annual Surveys, is retiring…at least from active University work. He’ll continue to oversee the RTDNA/Hofstra University Annual Surveys in conjunction with Hofstra, where he’ll be Professor Emeritus. Here’s the link to Bob’s bio which covers both his previous University stops as well as markets in which he worked. April 27, 2013

Greetings:

More activity this week than in the past few, and lots of items in Names in the News.

There are THREE newly-named NDs to share, and TWO new openings, one created by the departure of an ND to Sinclair as Director of News Standards and Practices which I believe is a new position for them.

Our count of open ND jobs remains at a lower-than-normal 18.

There’s an ad for one of those ND jobs, along with an ad for an EP opening in a top ten market. Avid is looking for a project manager, and we have a director/producer opening in Raleigh. (You may not be a director/producer, but you probably know one. Tell ’em about the opportunity and make a new friend!)

There are some updated listings in our Other News Management Openings.

We have an obituary for a former Tampa ND, a list of winners of SPJ’s Sigma Delta Chi awards, a handful of news managers on the move, and a number of GM and group moves, including one involved a former news director.

All the details below, following this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

Croswait

KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, OK…earlier this week we shared with you the news that STEPHANIE CROSWAIT is leaving this Hearst owned/ABC affiliate for health reasons. Stephanie tells me that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about a year ago and has decided she needs to concentrate on her health and her family. She’s been here more than five years, and has also worked in Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, Memphis, Tulsa, Cincinnati, and Baltimore.

Anderson

WTVR-TV, Richmond, VA…BILL ANDERSON is leaving this CBS affiliate for a new job as Director of News Standards and Practices for Sinclair Broadcasting. Bill’s been the ND for this Local TV owned station for 4 1/2 years. He’ll be based at the Sinclair station in Nashville, a market in which Bill worked earlier in his career. He’s also worked in Tucson, Houston, and Columbia, MO.

And…while not a new opening…please check out the Help Wanted Ad for an open news director position in Jackson, MS.

Newly Named News Directors:

Baer

WHP-TV, Harrisburg, PA…congratulations to veteran ND DAVID BAER who’ll be the next ND for this recently-acquired-by-Sinclair CBS affiliate. Dave most recently was the ND for WXXA-TV in Albany, NY, but lost his job last December when the station was sold and WTEN-TV took over the news production for WXXA. He’s a former ND in Indianapolis, Raleigh, Providence, Portland, ME, Buffalo, and Springfield. MA. Dave replaces CRAIG HUME who left the station last month and is now the ND for KSNV-TV in Las Vegas.

Reese

KMIR-TV, Palm Desert, CA…DAVID REESE gets his first ND job as he takes the helm of this Journal Broadcast Group owned NBC affiliate. He’s spent the past 15 years at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, most recently as Assignment Manager. David’s worked for several other Los Angeles stations, and in Eugene, OR. At KMIR, he replaces GEORGE SEVERSON who left the station in March to become ND for KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City.

Moravchik

WDAZ-TV, Grand Forks, ND…JULIE MORAVCHIK will be the next ND for this ABC affiliate. She’s a veteran of the Duluth, MN, market, having served as ND for the FOX affiliate there, KQDS-TV, and previously worked as a reporter for WDIO-TV, and as the GM and ND for a low power station in Ashland, MN.

April 19, 2013

Wednesday, April 24 UPDATE:

Two items today.

Croswait

KOCO-TV (Oklahoma City) News Director STEPHANIE CROSWAIT has announced her resignation due to her battle with multiple sclerosis. Stephanie tells me she was diagnosed a year ago and decided that it was better for her to step down and concentrate on her health and her family. She’s been the ND for this Hearst owned ABC affiliate for more than five years, and has earlier worked in Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, Memphis, Tulsa, Cincinnati, and Baltimore.

And a promotion today for a former Phoenix and Columbus News Director.

Cardenas

JOHN CARDENAS has been named President and General Manager for WBNS-TV in Columbus and Vice President of News for the parent company, Dispatch Broadcasting Group. John is currently GM for one of the company’s two stations, WTHR-TV in Indianapolis, and came to that job from his post as ND for WBNS.  He’s worked for the company for 14 years.

He’s also worked in San Diego, Norfolk, Portland, OR, Oklahoma City and Baton Rouge.

As always…more on these stories in our full report later this week.

**** ***** ****
Greetings:

We have only one move to report to you this week, but it involves a longtime and well known news director moving to a network o-and-o in a top 20 market.

That keeps our count of open ND jobs at just 18.

We have ads for two of those openings (one a new ad) as well as an ad from Avid which is looking for a project manager.

Also this week, news from Fresno where KSEE-TV News Director CHRIS MANSON has lost his job after Nexstar’s acquisition of KGPE-TV there. It appears KGPE News Director CHAD McCOLLUM will oversee both newsrooms. The irony here: Chris is a former VP/News for Nexstar before the company eliminated that position.

We have a few items in Names in the News (always anxious for more, email me your news!), have freshened our list of Other News Management Openings, and have an obituary for a former ND whose passing we reported last week.

All that…and more…after this week’s openings.

New News Director Opening:

WOAI-TV, San Antonio, TX…TOM BELL announced a few minutes ago that he’s leaving this (newly-acquired) Sinclair station to be the next ND for KOVR-TV in Sacramento. Tom was here for five years. More on this below.

And while not a new opening, please note the paid Help Wanted Ad below for the opening at WJTV in Jackson, MS.

Newly Named News Director:

KOVR-TV, Sacramento, CA…as noted above, TOM BELL will be the next ND for this CBS o-and-o. He’s spent the past five years as ND for WOAI-TV in San Antonio, has been an ND in Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Detroit, and has also worked in St. Louis. The move brings him closer to daughters in San Francisco and Los Angeles, where his daughter, actress KRISTEN BELL, recently gave birth to a daughter. At KOVR, Tom replaces CAMERYN BECK who left the station in February to become ND for KTVK-TV in Phoenix.

Help Wanted Ads:

News Director, KTVA-TV, Anchorage, AK:

KTVA 11 seeks a leader who will take Alaska’s first television station to the top. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced news manager to build their own team as part of a multi-million dollar HD re-build. You will oversee a staff of 45+, with a new state-of-the-art newsroom, studio, field and editing gear, along with multiple satellite and ENG tools. We’re not even keeping the old logo!

The new local owners are committing the budget and resources to producing the highest quality newscast possible. A great opportunity for a current Executive Producer or Assistant News Director from a larger market looking to create an outstanding news organization. Or for a News Director looking to fulfill their own vision without heavy corporate competition for resources.

The ideal candidate creates a culture of enterprise, promotes creative storytelling, and commits to community. Balance, context and fairness guides all news decisions. Broadcast, mobile and on-line distribution experience is also important criteria.

This is a challenge for someone looking to compete against a legacy station, in a market that is ripe for change. Please provide a link to, or a DVD of a newscast that reflects your imprint. Please provide a cover letter explaining your news philosophy, and how you would manage the process of building an award winning and market-leading newsroom.

Yes, it’s Alaska. If that excites you, then we’d like to hear from you.

Sunday, April 14, 2013 UPDATE:

Zobel

We now have more information on the passing of former ND AL ZOBEL, who died last Thursday of a brain tumor.  Al was 58, and is survived by his wife of 31 years, a son, and a daughter.  A celebration of his life will be held next Thursday in McFarland, WI.  More details here.

The original post on his passing and his background can be found below.

Greetings:

It was nice to see some of you at this week’s NAB conference in Las Vegas.

There’s ONE new ND opportunity (and it’s an interesting one) in this week’s report, and TWO new news directors. That drops our list of open jobs to just 18.

We have an ad for that new ‘interesting’ new opening, an ad for an o-and-o ND opening in a large Texas market, and ads for two medium market management jobs.

If FREE appeals to you (and why wouldn’t it?) check out display ads below for offers from two advertisers.

We’ve refreshed our list of Other News Management Openings, have several names in the news, details about IRE Award winners, the sale of the Fisher Broadcast stations, and, sadly, an obituary for a former ND in Wisconsin, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska.

All that…and more…after this week’s openings.

New News Director Opening:

KTVA-TV, Anchorage, AK…the new owners of the CBS affiliate, GCI, Alaska’s largest telecom, have launched a massive re-building of the station, including a relocated facility, additional newscasts, and a larger staff. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below. (You might note a familiar name in that ad: longtime KTUU News Director/Anchor JOHN TRACY is consulting the owners on the relaunch).

Newly Named News Directors:

Effron

WPIX-TV, New York, NY…we told you on Tuesday that MARK EFFRON is returning to a local newsroom as ND for this Tribune owned operation. Mark’s a former VP/News for Post-Newsweek, ND for WFSB-TV in Hartford (when PNS owned it), and a former MSNBC executive. He most recently has been working on a public radio partnership. The New York Daily News interviewed Mark about his new opportunity. He replaces BILL CAREY who left the station last fall after almost three years as ND.

KINT-TV, El Paso, TX…URIEL POSADA will be the next ND for this Entravision owned station. He has been working at the Telemundo station in El Paso, and has previously worked in Denver and Sacramento. Uriel replaces ZOLTAN CSANYI-SALCEDO who left the station in February for a job at ESPN.

I’m sorry to report the death of former news director AL ZOBEL, who died this past week at the age of 58. I’m told he’d been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He also served as a news director in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Jefferson City, MO, and Kearney, NE. Al began his career on air in Texas.

A colleague from WKOW remembers him in this blog post.  (If you missed it, funeral services and memorial information can be found above.)
