Tuesday, October 23, 2012 UPDATE:

Greetings:

McGruder

A surprise from Kansas City this morning, where longtime WDAF-TV News Director BRYAN McGRUDER has left the station. Bryan’s been the ND for this LocalTV owned FOX affiliate for almost ten years. He previously had been the ND for (at the time) sister FOX o-and-o WHBQ-TV in Memphis for two years, and worked one year as an ND in Savannah, GA.  Bryan spent the first 15 years of his career as an anchor/reporter, producer, and EP in several markets, including Huntsville, Jackson and Meridian, MS.

More on this story in our full report later this week.

**** ***** ****
Greetings:

Lots of activity in this week’s report.

There are THREE new ND openings and SEVEN new ND’s to tell you about (including one in a top ten market just announced today). Another of those openings was created by the promotion of an ND to a GM job at a sister-station.

That brings our list of stations looking for a new ND to 26.

We have an ad for one of the open ND jobs below…an opportunity in the Pacific Northwest.

In Names in the News, two news manager items and a number of GM changes.

All that and more below:

New News Director Openings:

WPXI-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…earlier today MIKE GOLDRICK announced his departure from this Cox-owned NBC affiliate to become ND for WRC-TV, the NBC o-and-o in Washington. More on that below. Mike was ND here for almost three years.

Lebenson

WVEC-TV, Norfolk, VA…longtime ND RICH LEBENSON has left this Belo-owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the ND there since 2005 and has previously been an ND for Belo’s KREM-TV in Spokane and at KMTV in Omaha. He’s also been an EP in San Francisco and Orlando, an Assistant ND in Cincinnati, and also worked in Sacramento. His departure came on the same day Belo named a new GM for WVEC (more on that in Names in the News).

Abouzeid

WPRI-TV, Providence, RI…congratulations to long-time ND JOE ABOUZEID who’s being promoted to General Manager for sister LIN Media properties WDTN/WBDT-TV in Dayton, OH. Joe’s been ND for this CBS/FOX duopoly since 2005: he first joined the station in 2002 as Managing Editor and was promoted to Assistant ND in 2004. He began his career at WHDH-TV in Boston as an intern and moved up the ranks there before going to Providence.

Newly Named News Directors:

Goldrick

WRC-TV, Washington, DC…as mentioned above, this NBC o-and-o today named MIKE GOLDRICK as its next news director. Mike’s been ND for WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh for the past three years and served as ND for WHEC-TV in Rochester, NY, for three years. His career has also taken him to Seattle, Detroit, Houston, Tampa, Charlotte, and West Palm Beach. At WRC, he replaces CAMILLE EDWARDS who left last summer to become ND for WABC-TV in New York.

Kelly

WSPA-TV, Spartanburg, SC…KAREN KELLY has been promoted to news director for this Media General owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the Managing Editor here since 2002, first joined the station in 1998 as a producer and was upped to Executive Producer that same year.  She’s also worked in Springfield, MO, and for another station in Spartanburg.  Karen will replace DAN CATES who left the station a few months ago when he was promoted to General Manager of Media General’s WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities, TN.

Barkley

WYFF-TV, Greenville, SC…BRUCE BARKLEY returns to South Carolina as ND for this Hearst owned NBC affiliate. He comes from another Hearst station, WAPT-TV, in Jackson, MS, where he’s been the ND since 2000. Bruce previously served as ND for WOLO-TV in Columbia, SC. He’s also worked in Knoxville and the Tri-Cities, TN, and in Greenville, NC. At WYFF, he’ll replace JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI who left the station last week to become ND for Hearst’s WTAE-TV in Pitsburgh.

Williams

WTLV/WJXX-TV, Jacksonville, FL…veteran news director KATHY WILLIAMS has been named ND for this Gannett-owned duopoly. (We actually told you that in July but later learned she was ‘interim’. Now it’s official.) Kathy’s been an ND in Houston and Cleveland (two stations). She’s also worked in Chicago, Washington, Birmingham, and Lubbock as well as Houston earlier in her career. Kathy replaces MIKE GARBER who left the station in May to become ND for WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL.

Hart

WAPT-TV, Jackson, MS…BEN HART has been promoted to ND for this Hearst owned ABC affiliate, replacing BRUCE BARKLEY who’s headed to WYFF-TV in Greenville, NC. (It’s part of a series of ND changes at Hearst stations.) Ben’s been the Assistant ND here since 2010, and has worked for two other Hearst stations in Sacramento and New Orleans. He previously worked for WAPT after beginning his career as a director in Columbus, MS.

Sanders

WCTV-TV, Tallahassee, FL…one Sanders replaces another as STAN SANDERS has been named ND for this Gray Television owned CBS affiliate. Stan’s been the ND for WDBD-TV in Jackson, MS, but that FOX affiliate has dropped its news department after the station was sold. WLBT-TV in Jackson will produce a newscast for WDBD. Stan earlier spent ten years as an ND in Columbus, OH. Before going to WDBD, he ran the Student Media Center at Southern Mississippi. At WCTV, he replaces TRISTON SANDERS who left last month to become Ass’t. ND for WWL-TV in New Orleans. She was ND just over two years here.

WETM-TV, Elmira, NY…SCOTT LEVY is the new ND here. He has been working for News 12 Bronx/Brooklyn. Scott’s also worked in Dallas, Memphis, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa (twice). He replaces SCOTT NICHOLS who left in August to become ND for WCTI-TV in Greenville/New Bern, NC.

Greetings:

Our weekly report is delayed by travel but full of information.

There are THREE new ND openings (including one in the number one market) and FOUR new ND’s to tell you about including one in the number two market).

Those moves mean we now have 29 stations looking for a new news director.

There’s one ad this week for a Senior Executive Producer in the Pacific Northwest.

Our sympathy to the staff at KCBS/KCAL-TV who lost a 35 year veteran assignment manager to cancer this week. Details below.

In Names in the News, two former ND’s have new jobs as EPs, a former ND turned GM is elected to a Hall of Fame, and we’ll tell you about the retirement of a GM who spent nine years as a college basketball coach.

And we’ll introduce you to four longtime TV types who are celebrating a combined 156 years of marriage this year.

All that and more below:

New News Director Openings:

Carey

WPIX-TV, New York, NY…BILL CAREY‘s long reported departure from this Tribune owned station became ‘official’ this week. Bill will leave the station for a new job he expects to be announced shortly. He’s been there just over two years. He’s a former GM in Tampa, ND and Station Manager in the Quad Cities, IL, market, a former ND in Detroit and for WCBS-TV in New York. He’s also worked for WABC-TV there.

WYFF-TV, Greenville, SC…JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI has left this Hearst owned NBC affiliate to become ND for Hearst’s WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. More on that below.

WMTV, Madison, WI…CHRIS GEGG is leaving this Gray TV owned NBC station to become the new news director for Hearst’s WISN-TV in Milwaukee. More on that below.

Newly Named News Directors:

KVEA-TV, Los Angeles, CA…RUBEN KEOSEYAN is the new ND for this Telemundo owned Spanish language station. He most recently was Executive Editor of the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the U.S., La Opinión, in Los Angeles. He earlier had been Publisher and Editor of the largest Spanish language newspaper in the Midwest, La Raza, in Chicago. At KVEA, he replaces RICK MORALES who left the station in August after two years as ND.

This second generation broadcaster (Dad Steve was a longtime ND & GM) has also worked in Milwaukee, Houston, Memphis, Biloxi, and Columbia, MO. He replaces ALEX BONGIORNO. Gegg

WISN-TV, Milwaukee, WI…in another move we reported in an UPDATE earlier this week, CHRIS GEGG has been named ND for this Hearst-owned ABC station. Chris has spent the last five years at the helm of WMTV‘s (Madison, WI) news department. He’s a former EP in Detroit and Nashville, and has also worked in Tampa and Toledo. Chris replaces LORI WALDON. She left a few months ago to become ND at Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento.

Obituary:

Crawford

STEVE CRAWFORD, who spent 35 years as an assignment editor for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, died this week of cancer.  Steve left the station in May without telling anyone that he suffered from advanced esophageal cancer.  More details about Steve’s life…and death…in this story from the LA Observer.

Names in the News:

Potter

GRIFF POTTER returns to the Midwest as the new Morning EP for WDIV-TV in Detroit. We told you a few weeks ago that Griff was leaving his job as ND for KVLY/KXJB-TV in Fargo, ND, for a job to be announced soon. Griff spent just over two years as ND in Fargo. He’s also been an ND in Paducah, KY, and Quad Cities, IL, and has worked in Milwaukee, Nashville, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Kansas City, Toledo and Huntsville, AL.

JENNIFER HOPPENSTEDT has been promoted to EP/Social Media and News for WLS-TV in Chicago. She joined the station 30 years ago, and most recently was Assignment Manager.

Glazier

LEEZA GLAZIER is the new EP at ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno, CA. She most recently was the Assistant ND at for the now closed OHIO NEWS NETWORK. Leeza’s a former ND for WOWK-TV in Huntington, WV, and has worked in Jacksonville, FL, Shreveport and Alexandria, LA. In addition to her management experience, Leeza’s began her career on air as a morning weather anchor.

News Director turned GM PAUL SANDS has been elected to the Vermont Broadcasters Hall of Fame. We told you a few weeks ago that Paul is retiring at the end of the year as GM of WPTZ/WNNE-TV in Burlington, VT.

WAYNE MARTIN, who’s been GM of Gray TV’s WKYT-TV in Lexington, KY since 1993, has announced his retirement as of the end of the year. Did you know that he spent nine years as the head basketball coach at Morehead State University?

Anniversaries:

Let’s pause a moment to congratulate three longtime broadcasters who are celebrating their 42nd anniversaries this year. In a business full of too many divorces and failed relationships, 42 years is worth of a tip of our hat.

Longtime consultant and AR&D Principal JIM WILLI and his wife SHERRI marked their 42nd this month.

KIRO-TV (Seattle) News Director BOB JORDAN and his wife SHARON celebrated their 42nd in May.

And former ND turned WCMH-TV (Columbus, OH) General Manager DAN BRADLEY and wife LYNN achieved their 42nd last month.

Finally, while not in the 42 year club (but still noteworthy) retired Las Vegas and Nashville ND MIKE CUTLER and his wife CHRIS observed their 30th this month.

Congrats to all.

Thursday, October 11, 2012 UPDATE:

Another day, another new Hearst news director to tell you about.

Antoniotti

Second generation broadcaster JUSTIN ANTONIOTTI has been named ND of the company’s WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh, effective immediately. Justin’s been the ND of Hearst’s WYFF-TV in Greenville, SC, for the past five years. He earlier had been the Assistant ND of another Hearst station, WISN-TV in Milwaukee. He’s also worked in Houston, Memphis, Biloxi, MS, and Columbia, MO.

Justin’s father, STEVE ANTONIOTTI, worked as an ND in Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Oklahoma City, and also was a GM for WJBK-TV in Detroit as well as GM at WTVS-TV, the PBS station in Detroit.

At WTAE, Justin replaces ALEX BONGIORNO who announced on Friday she was leaving the station this week. Her last day was yesterday.

It will be a full newsletter when we distribute our regular weekly report later this week.

Wednesday, October 20, 2012 UPDATE:

There are two larger market news director moves to tell you about in this UPDATE.

Carey

One is the much reported but-just-now-finally-official-resignation of BILL CAREY as news director of Tribune’s WPIX-TV in New York. Bill will leave the station by the end of the month for a new job which he says will be announced soon. Bill’s been ND here for almost three years. Before that, he was ND and Station Manager for WQAD-TV in Moline, IL. He’s a former ND for WCBS-TV in New York, and also worked for WABC-TV there. In addition, Bill’s been a news director in Detroit (WXYZ-TV) and a General Manager for WFTS-TV in Tampa.

Gegg

The other move was just announced this morning: CHRIS GEGG will be the new ND for WISN-TV in Milwaukee. Chris has spent the last 5+ years as ND for WMTV in Madison, WI. He’s a former EP in Detroit and Nashville, and has worked as a producer in Tampa and Toledo. Chris replaces LORI WALDON at this Hearst owned ABC affiliate. She left a few months ago to become ND at Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento.

We’ll have more on these stories and the rest of the week’s news in our regular report, which may be delayed by travel.

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

TWO veteran news directors made news yesterday, one leaving for a new job, and one (in a top 25 market) just leaving. Those are our new openings this week, while we have THREE new NDs in our report.

By my count, that brings our list of open news director jobs to 30.

Our ONE new ad this week features a Senior Executive Producer opening in Portland, OR. And we have a Blind Box ad for an ND opening at a small market NBC affiliate.

Otherwise, it’s a fairly slow week. We have some updates to our Other News Management Openings, and some news about two GM retirements…one a former ND. We do have one taker on our free Situations Wanted listing, and we’ll tell you about the passing of a veteran Ft. Wayne broadcaster who spent 48 years at one station.

All that and more below:

New News Director Openings:

Bongiorno

News: It’s in my blood and I want back in. With major market experience as an anchor/reporter (Orlando,Charlotte), small market leadership (anchor, reporter, mentor) and rounded out by “brand”casting for events and exhibitions, I’m seeking an opportunity to put that experience to work crafting viewer-enticing TV news. The ideal situation would be a combination of on-air and management roles but the key is a desire to dominate the market via solid reporting and viewer interaction.

September 30, 2012

Greetings:

We have TWO newly opened ND jobs in this edition, with NO new openings. Our complete list grows to 31 stations with open ND jobs.

Some clarifications and updates on earlier items. Last week we told you that CHUCK MAULDEN was leaving KTHV in Little Rock after five years as ND. We’ve since learned he resigned and will be at the station until the end of October. And in reporting BOB WALTERS‘ hire at KNOE-TV in Monroe, LA, we were unclear in explaining his tenure in Evansville. He’d been ND at WTVW-TV for 12 years, and ND for the duopoly (WTVW & WEHT-TV) for one year.

We have ONE new ad this week, that a Blind Box ad for an ND opening at a small market NBC affiliate. And we’re re-running a number of ads from last week’s newsletter.

We’ll tell you about a number management moves in Names in the News, and we have two obituaries, including one you wouldn’t expect to see in a publication targeted to news of news managers.

New News Director Openings:

Remington

KTVK-TV, Phoenix, AZ…we told you earlier this week that BRAD REMINGTON announced his departure from this Belo-owned independent station. Brad will remain at the station and help with the transition while the company looks for his replacement. He’ll return to Denver, where his wife is a principal at a private school. They’ve done the commuter thing for the four years he’s been ND here. He previously has been an ND for KDVR-TV in Denver, KTVI-TV in St. Louis, and KOB-TV in Albuquerque, and had earlier worked in Denver.

Owen

WLWT-TV, Cincinnati, OH…STACY OWEN is returning to California to be the Assistant ND for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. Stacy’s from California…in fact her Mom lives in LA. She (Stacy, not her mom!) has been ND for this Hearst-owned NBC affiliate for the last three years. She spent three years as ND for KXTV in Sacramento, and worked for KRON-TV in San Francisco for 14 years, including three as ND.

Newly Named News Directors:

I don’t know of any. If you do, please help everyone out by letting me know via an email to: rick@rickgevers.com

Obituaries:

Our sympathy to KVVU-TV (Las Vegas) Morning Executive Producer JUDY GREENE on the death of her fiancee, HERBIE GOFORTH. Herbie, a lineman for NV Energy, died this week when he fell from a utility tower. He died Tuesday, the day before his 30th birthday and about a week before his scheduled marriage to Judy.

CHRIS ECONOMAKI also died this week. He wasn’t a TV news manager or executive, though you may know him from his work as an announcer on auto races for more than 40 years. Chris got his first TV gig in the 60’s because NASCAR was unhappy with the announcer of its previous telecast, a guy named WALTER CRONKITE. He also published National Speed Sport News and wrote a weekly column which was a must read for anyone who followed auto racing. I was a long time subscriber and fan of that column, and elements of his style have found their way into this newsletter (hence the tribute). He was a terrific reporter, a tireless worker and an unparalleled storyteller. His now silent typewriter holds a well deserved place of honor in the media room at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Names in the News:

JEFF ORCUTT has been promoted to Morning EP at KMSP-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Minneapolis. He has been a producer there.

TIM MAESTAS is the new EP at KRQE-TV, the LIN owned station in Albuquerque. He’s been the weekend anchor and has worked at this CBS affiliate since 1999.

ROB MACHADO has been named Content Manager for WHAM-TV in Rochester, NY. He most recently worked for KITV in Honolulu for three years. He’s also worked in St. Louis, Orlando, Raleigh, Tampa, two stations in Miami, Columbus, GA, and for the Weather Channel in Atlanta.

KEVIN FRIES has been named Assistant ND for WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. He’s been working at Central Florida News 13, and has previously worked in Mobile, Montgomery, and Lexington.
