Varner
Congratulations to KIRK VARNER who’s been named ND for Newport’s WKRC-TV (ABC) in Cincinnati. Kirk’s been VP and Director of News for WTNH/WCTX in Hartford for the past 9+ years. That’s the LIN owned ABC/MyTV duopoly there. He’s also worked in New York, Boston, and Buffalo and for ESPN.
Kirk replaces ELBERT TUCKER who moved north in September to become ND for WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH. Elbert was ND in Cincy for nine years, too.

It’s a quiet week, with ONE new ND opening, while the smallest opening on our list is the ONE new ND job filled this week. And I suspect this week will be quiet as well.
Our count of open ND jobs remains at 21.

New News Director Opening:
WWL-TV, New Orleans, LA…after more than 30 years of service, CHRIS SLAUGHTER has left this Belo-owned CBS affiliate, just one year after the station won a George Foster Peabody Award. He was promoted to ND in 2007 and had been Assistant ND before that, and earlier worked on the assignment desk. It’s the only TV station for which he has worked.
Newly Named News Director:
KAVU-TV, Victoria, TX…HENRY MEDRANO is the new ND for this Saga Communications owned ABC affiliate. Henry most recently served as the ND for KVEO-TV in Brownsville, TX. He’s also worked in San Antonio and for CBS Newspath. He replaces DON BRADLEY who retired after just over a year as ND here and a 50 year career in news.

Names in the News:
5. 32. 2. 7. 9. Those are the Chicago TV stations for which TODD WOOLMAN has worked as he moves to his FIFTH Windy City TV station. He’s the new EP of afternoon newscasts for WMAQ-TV. Todd’s been the morning EP for WFLD-TV for the last seven months and previously was the Assistant ND at WBBM-TV. His Chicago tenure was interrupted by a two year gig as ND for WPTV in W. Palm Beach. Before Florida, Todd worked at WLS-TV and WGN-TV. He’s also worked in Seattle, Detroit, South Bend and Kalamazoo.
CHRIS PANTALEO returns to his native Detroit to become the new morning EP for WXYZ-TV. He’s been the evening EP for WXMI-TV in Grand Rapids since 2000, where he worked with ND TIM DYE, who’s now the ND at WXYZ.

CARRIE, meet CORRIE. CORRIE, meet CARRIE. That’s the conversation at WCNC-TV in Charlotte, where CARRIE HOFMANN has been hired by ND CORRIE HARDING. Carrie will be the Assistant ND for this Belo-owned NBC affiliate. She’s been an EP for KMGH-TV in Denver, where she’s worked in a variety of roles since 1999. She’s also worked in Phoenix and Milwaukee.

One time ND LENA SADIWSKYJ is now the Editor in Chief for Taptu.com, whose new iPhone app, mytaptu, is getting rave reviews. It’s a social news aggregator. Check it out here. Lena’s a former ND in Orlando, Tucson, and Shreveport, worked in Phoenix, Dallas and Birmingham as well as Toronto and Halifax, and taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
