The Assistant News Director for KNTV in San Jose, CA will be responsible for ensuring overall execution of newsroom activities in the absence of the VP News.

Implement tactical operations of newsroom while ensuring highest levels of journalistic, legal, television production and promotion standards are maintained. Oversee day-to-day coverage, big story, breaking news, weather and sweeps planning with an eye toward budget, payroll, staffing, field and news operations to meet operational goals.

Responsibilities include supervising newsroom personnel and editorial content. Announce the stories that will be part of each rundown and what angle to take with each one. Address how to market the stories giving specific language to the producers (both newscast & promotions) about the best way to promote stories. Assign stories to reporters and assign managers to reporters and newscasts. Provide follow up with reporters, reiterating the specific details of their stories – who must interviewed, video that must be shot, possible live locations, etc. Throughout the day, stay in constant contact with reporters to ensure they are staying on task and focused. Provide regular supervision to Producers and Executive Producers making editorial decisions and exhibit leadership by keeping Producers disciplined on the fundamentals of producing newscasts.

Obituaries:

Two former news directors died this week.

Both were named Bob.

Both ran stations in Washington, DC.

Both died of cancer.

And both were beloved by their employees.

Long

BOB LONG died in a Washington hospital Monday of metastatic prostate cancer at the age of 71. He was a former ND for WRC-TV in Washington, KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, worked for several other Los Angeles stations, and produced documentaries during a long and varied careers. Memorial services are being planned in both Los Angeles and Washington. More on his life and career in this obituary.

Reichblum

BOB REICHBLUM died Tuesday in Chicago from brain cancer. He was 58. He’d been an ND for WJLA-TV in Washington and WPLG-TV in Miami, but also served as the EP of Good Morning America, and was an executive at CNBC, WebFN, and the Reelz Channel. He also worked in newsrooms in Detroit, Philadelphia, and his native Pittsburgh. More in this interesting story from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. If you’ll permit me a personal note, I knew Bob for more than 30 years. We once shared season hockey tickets for the Detroit Red Wings. And since we reconnected a few years ago, I got an email from him every year on my birthday. I’m sure I’m not the only one who will miss those notes.

The Department of Justice has okayed Nexstar’s acquisition of Media General, contingent on the sale of seven TV stations.

General Manager Moves:

We may not have many news director moves this week, but we make up for that with an abundance of GM news.

Leider

BOB LEIDER is returning to Sunbeam Televison, (owner of WHDH-TV in Boston and WSVN-TV in Miami) as executive VP and General Manager. He retired from that job in 2014, but is returning now that his replacement, CHRIS WAYLAND, is leaving to become VP of Group Operations for Tribune Broadcasting.

JAY O’CONNOR, who’s run Cox Media’s KIRO-TV in Seattle since June, 2012, says he will leave that job at the end of the year.

As one new GM heads to Indianapolis, another is leaving.

JAMES (JAMIE) AITKEN has been named GM of Tribune’s WTTV/WXIN-TV the CBS/FOX duopoly in Indianapolis. He’s currently running Tribune’s KDAF-TV in Dallas, once ran Belo’s Texas Cable News in Dallas, was a GM in Spokane and a station manager in Phoenix. It’s a return to Indianapolis for Jamie, who began his career as a Pulliam Fellow at the now-defunct Indianapolis News.

Friday was LES VANN‘s last day as GM of WISH-TV (CW) in Indianapolis. He’s headed to WFTX-TV in Ft. Myers, the Scripps-owned FOX affiliate.

SCOTT THOMAS has been promoted to GM for Raycom media’s KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, MO. He’s been the sales manager for that CBS affiliate.

KTEN-TV in Denison, TX, has a new GM. It’s DAVID TILLERY, a former GM for KETK-TV in Tyler, TX.

Finally…VICTOR HOGSTROM will be the new GM for public station KPTS-TV in Wichita, replacing one time news director MICHELE GORS. More here.

Tuesday, August 30, 2016 UPDATE:

I’m very sorry to tell you that BOB REICHBLUM died last night. Bob was diagnosed with brain cancer last October. ~~Not sure of his age, but he was either 59 or 60.~~ (Updated: This obituary/funeral information lists his age as 58.)

Bob had a wide ranging career, ranging from network to local news. He was the EP for Good Morning America, VP of Primetime Programming for CNBC, CEO of WebFN, and a Senior VP for Reelz Channel among other positions.

On the local side, Bob served as a news director in Washington (WJLA-TV) and Miami (WPLG-TV), was an EP in Detroit and Pittsburgh, and worked as a producer in Philadelphia. More on his Linkedin page.

He’s survived by his wife DIANE and two children, JUSTIN and RACHEL.

The funeral is tomorrow at 10:00 at Chicago Jewish Funerals in Skokie, followed by burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie. The family will sit shiva from tomorrow afternoon until Tuesday.

And we have a little more information on the death of longtime news director BOB LONG who died yesterday in a Washington hospital after a long battle with brain cancer. One of his former stations, KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, aired this tribute.

If/when I learn of funeral arrangements for Bob, I’ll post the information on my website.

Monday, August 29, 2016 UPDATE #2:

It’s my sad duty to report that BOB LONG died today in a Washington hospital after a long fight with bone cancer.

Long

Bob was a legendary news director who retired in 2009 after six years as ND for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. He also served as ND for NBC’s WRC-TV in Washington, worked for several other Los Angeles stations, and also produced documentaries.

You will get a sense of the man as you enjoy this interview with Bob, conducted when he retired from KNBC. He was also known for the uniqueness of his memos, as remembered by WRC anchor JIM VANCE in this note today to his co-workers.

I don’t have funeral arrangements yet, nor Bob’s age. I’ll add them to this website when I do, and will include them in the next emailed edition of the full newsletter.

One other note: It was announced late today that LES VANN is headed to Scripps’ WFTX-TV (FOX) in Ft. Myers as General Manager. We told you last week that Les was leaving WISH-TV in Indianapolis after two years as GM.

Congratulations to long time Philadelphia news director SUSAN SCHILLER who was announced today as the new news director for KRIV-TV in Houston, the FOX o-and-o there.

Susan spent 15 years as ND of CBS’s KYW-TV in Philly, part of a 40 year career with the company, ranging from other owned stations to CBS News. Here’s her complete bio from when she was named to the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame.

At KRIV, she replaces BOB MORFORD who left in May for an ND job in Huntsville, AL, to be closer to his wife, who lives in Nashville. Bob spent four years here, three as news director.

And there’s one important correction from yesterday’s newsletter. I told you that CHRIS PETTIGREW had taken a new job as an EP at Scripps’ ABC affiliate in Detroit, WXYZ-TV. He actually is the new EP for Scripps’ ABC affiliate in Denver, KMGH-TV. Apologies to Chris, KMGH, WXYZ, and whoever is looking over his/her shoulder at WXYZ.

Worth/Dallas, TX…in one of three emailed UPDATES we brought you this week, we told you of the surprise departure of MIKE GARBER as news director for this CBS o-and-o after just over two years. He’s also been an ND in West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, FL, and Columbia, SC. Mike began his career as a sports producer for stations in Tampa and San Francisco. Longtime Dallas TV reporter ED BARK has more on his departure.

Newly Named News Directors:

KNTV, San Jose/San Francisco, CA…in an announcement that bought spontaneous applause from the staff, STEPHANIE ADROUNY is being promoted to VP/News for this NBC o-and-o. She’s been the Assistant ND here for the past two years, and spent the eight years previously as the Assistant ND for KGO-TV in San Francisco. At KGO, for at least part of that time, her GM was VALARI STAAB, now President of the NBC o-and-o stations. You’re smart: you connect the dots. Stephanie replaces JONATHAN MITCHELL who left in July after more than six years as ND.

KAKW-TV, Austin, TX…this Univision station has named ISMAEL MARTINEZ as news director. Again! He worked at KAKW from 2003 until 2014 in a variety of roles, including news director, before moving to Univision’s San Antonio station, KWEX-TV, as News and Operations Supervisor. He replaces MIGUEL GAYTAN who was named ND of Telemundo’s KTAZ-TV in Phoenix in June.

WPTA/WISE-TV, Ft. Wayne, IN…JONATHAN SHELLEY joins this Quincy Media owned duopoly as news director. We have the news release here. Until last March, he spent nine years as the ND for WDSU-TV in New Orleans. He’s also worked in Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Ft. Myers. Jonathan replaces ALAN WAGMEISTER who left the station last month (shortly after Quincy took over) after one year as ND.

Mahon

WWTV/WWUP-TV, Cadillac/Traverse City, MI…SEAN MAHON returns to this CBS affiliate as news director. He was the station’s chief photographer from 1996-2000 before working for three Detroit stations as a photographer. He replaces KEVIN DUNAWAY who was promoted to Vice President and General Manager for this Heritage Broadcasting station in April after 14 years as ND.

KPLC-TV, Lake Charles, LA…JENELLE SHRINER will be the next ND for this Raycom Media owned NBC affiliate. Here’s the official release from the station. Congratulations to STEPHANIE ADROUNY who was promoted to VP/News for KNTV, the NBC o-and-o in San Jose/San Francisco late today. It appears to be a popular move: I’m told the staff broke out in spontaneous applause when it was announced.

Here’s the note from GM RICHARD CERUSSI to the staff.

Stephanie has been the Assistant ND for this NBC o-and-o for the past two years. She spent the eight years before that as the Assistant ND for KGO-TV in San Francisco, where her GM…for at least some of that time…was VALARI STAAB, now president of the NBC owned stations group.

At KNTV, she replaces JONATHAN MITCHELL who left the station in July after 6 1/2 years as news director.

One update on today’s earlier report of MIKE GARBER‘s departure from Dallas’ KTVT-TV. Dallas media blogger ED BARK has filed this report which identifies some possible reasons behind that move.

A surprise today from Dallas/Ft. Worth, where KTVT-TV News Director MIKE GARBER has resigned.

Mike’s been news director for this CBS o-and-o since July 2014. He’s also been an ND in West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, FL, and Columbia, SC. Mike began his career as a sports producer for stations in Tampa and San Francisco.

Vann

Former news director turned general manager LES VANN, who lead WISH-TV in Indianapolis through a transition from CBS to a CW affiliate, is leaving that Media General-soon-to-be-Nexstar station to take a GM job at another station which will be revealed soon.

Les has been GM at WISH since the fall of 2014, and has also run stations in Savannah, GA, Cincinnati, Syracuse, Ashville, NC, Cedar Rapids, and Champaign, IL. He began his career in Springfield, IL, starting as an intern and rising to ND. More on his website.

And former WDSU-TV (New Orleans) News Director JONATHAN SHELLEY has landed as the next ND for WPTA-TV, the ABC/NBC duopoly in Ft. Wayne, IN. Here’s the news release. Jonathan spent almost nine years as ND for WDSU before leaving last March, and six years as the Assistant ND for another Hearst station, KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. He’s also worked in Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Ft. Myers.

He replaces ALAN WAGMEISTER who left the station earlier this month, shortly after new owner Quincy Media took over the station.

Mike replaces LEE ROSENTHAL who left the station last month after almost two years as ND.

KMOV-TV, St. Louis, MO…you already know from our mid-week UPDATE that SCOTT DIENER has been named ND for the Meredith owned CBS affiliate. Here’s the station’s news release. Scott’s been working on a variety of projects since leaving KCBS-TV in Los Angeles in June, 2015, after five years as ND. He’s also run newsrooms in Dallas, San Jose/San Francisco, Phoenix, Cincinnati, and Louisville, and worked in Minneapolis, Raleigh, Knoxville, TN, and Columbia, MO. At KMOV, he replaces BRIAN THOUVENOT who left the station earlier this summer after two years as ND and six years at the station.

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…KELLY JOHNSTON returns to this ABC affiliate as its next news director. More here. She began in 1999 in production, moved to news in 2005, eventually become Senior Producer before leaving in 2013 to spend time with her family. She replaces NIC MOYE who left earlier this month after three years as ND, apparently for a job in Oregon, about which I have no details. (Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?) WLNE is owned by Citadel.

KRCG-TV, Jefferson City, MO…MATT JOHNSON makes the short drive down Highway 63 to become ND for this Sinclair Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate. He’s been the Content Manager for KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO, for the past 3+ years, and has held a number of other jobs both in and out of TV. At KRCG, he replaces JULIE MORAVCHIK who left the station in June after about 15 months to become ND for WGBA-TV in her native Wisconsin.

WABG/WXVT/WNBD/EABG-TV, Greenwood, MS…GAVIN MALISKA is now GM and News Director for this Cala Broadcast Partners owned cluster of stations. Gavin tells me that WABG (ABC), WXVT (CBS), WNBD (NBC) and EABG (Fox), serve the Mississippi (and a little bit of Arkansas) Delta. Gavin’s been an ND in Macon, GA, Missoula, MT, Orlando, Indianapolis, and Panama City, and worked for FOX o-and-o’s in Chicago and Detroit.

Obituary:

CNN producer MATT NULL, who also worked in a variety of local markets and for FOX News, died last week at the age of 34 while on vacation in Barcelona. I have not seen a cause of death listed. Matt started as a reporter in tiny Kirksville, MO. More in this obit.

Longtime cable news executive STEVE PAULUS is retiring at the end of the month as Senior Vice President, News & Local Programming at Time Warner Cable. He was one of the founder’s of TWC’s NY 1 in New York. More in this New York Daily News article and more information about his career via his Linkedin profile.

And in Pittsburgh, JEFF WEISSBART is retiring Friday after 34 years at CBS’s KDKA-TV. Here’s part of the note he sent me:

Over the past 34 years I have held a variety of positions, starting out as an Assignment Editor, then Assignment Manager, Managing Editor, Assistant News Director, News Director and for the past 14 years, Operations Manager. Before my time at KDKA, I spent 4 years working at KQV NewsRadio in Pittsburgh. What does the future hold?Well this fall will include many trips to the Golf Course. Here’s the UPDATE I teased yesterday, as a veteran newsman returns to Missouri as the next news director for KMOV-TV in St. Louis.

SCOTT DIENER, who was graduated from the University of Missouri, was named ND for that Meredith owned CBS affiliate moments ago.

Here’s the news release from the station.

Scott most recently was the ND for KCBS/KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, a job he left in June 2015 after five years. He’s also been an ND in Dallas, San Jose/San Francisco, Phoenix, Cincinnati, and Louisville, and worked in Minneapolis, Raleigh, Knoxville, and Columbia, MO. More on his Linkedin profile.

At KMOV, he replaces BRIAN THOUVENOT who left the station in June after just over two years as ND and six years at the station.

One more note: KELLY JOHNSTON has been named ND for WLNE-TV in Providence, RI. She replaces NIC MOYE who left the station earlier this month, apparently for an ND job in Oregon.

Wednesday, August 17, 2016 UPDATE:

A Boston area native returns home as News Director for WFXT-TV, Cox’s FOX affiliate there.

MIKE OLIVEIRA has spent the past 3+ years as ND for Cox’s WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh. He was the managing editor for that NBC affiliate for almost three years before getting promoted. He first joined WPXI in 2005.

Earlier in his career he produced for WHDH-TV in Boston, and has also worked in Syracuse where he went to college.

At WFXT, he replaces LEE ROSENTHAL who left the station last month after not quite two years there.

Former KMOV-TV (St. Louis) News Director BRIAN THOUVENOT has landed as the Chief Development Officer for Catholic Charities of St. Louis. He spent just over eight years at that CBS affiliate, the last 2+ as news director, before leaving in June. He also worked in Lancaster, PA and Springfield, MO. More on his new job in this article.

ALLISON GIBSON, who’d been the Senior Executive Producer for WSJV-TV in Elkhart/South Bend, IN, has joined her former ND there, PERRY BOXX, in Peoria where she’ll be the Assistant ND for WEEK/WHOI-TV. She’s also worked in Roanoke and for News 12 New Jersey.

One time CNN and ABC correspondent CHARLES BIERBAUER is stepping down as Dean of the University of South Carolina’s communications school. He’s been there since 2002 and will leave at the end of the school year.

An update on the health of longtime Kentucky newsman JERRY SANDER. We told you last week he was facing surgery following complications from pneumonia from a fall which broke 6 ribs. I’m now told he’s in intensive care at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lexington, He’s a one-time ND at WTVQ-TV in Lexington and reporter for WKYT-TV there.

Finally, apologies to JACOB BURBRINK whose first name I changed last week in reporting his move to WPTA-TV in Ft, Wayne as Internet Director.
