Monday, October 27, 2014 UPDATE:

Lord

A surprise today from Washington, where BILL LORD, who most recently was the GM of WJLA-TV, has been named Station Manager/Executive News Director for Gannett’s WUSA-TV, the CBS affiliate. Bill left WJLA last month after the station was purchased by Sinclair. He’d been at that ABC affiliate for more than 12 years, beginning as ND, then Station Manager, before being promoted to GM more than three years ago.

Bill’s a former ND in Los Angeles, Seattle (twice), and Nashville, and earlier in his career worked as a correspondent for NBC News in the Middle East. At WUSA, he replaces FRED D’AMBROSI, who left the station Friday after five years as ND.

More on this move and all the latest developments in our full newsletter later this week.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

The News Director movement in this week’s report is in smaller markets, following last week’s action in top 20 markets.

We have TWO new (not really, they’ve both been NDs before) news directors to tell you about, and ONE new opening created by one of the above moving up.

We now have 27 open ND jobs on our last, with paid ads for TWO of those openings. And there are THREE other ads for news management opportunities.

In Names in the News, some former NDs have taken new jobs, and a long ago NBC talent scout who once interviewed LEE HARVEY OSWALD (look him up, youngsters!) is moving, as well.

While you read on, I’ll be wondering how the Indianapolis Colts could play so poorly today!

New News Director Opening:

WCJB-TV, Gainesville, FL…ANDREA CLENNEY is leaving this Diversified Communications owned ABC affiliate after three years as news director for a new job as the ND at WLTZ-TV in Columbus, GA. More on that below. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Brinkman

KLFY-TV, Lafayette, LA…KYLE BRINKMAN moves west along the Gulf Coast to become the next ND for this Media General owned CBS affiliate. Kyle’s spent the last eight years as ND Sinclair’s WEAR-TV in Pensacola, FL. He also spent five years as an ND in Chattanooga, and has worked in Baltimore, Norfolk, Memphis, Columbus, OH, and twice for WHNT-TV in Huntsville, AL, where he began his career. Kyle replaces DWIGHT DUGAS. We told you earlier this year that Dwight, who joined the station at 18 as a projectionist and became ND in 2008, was moving to a new role in the station.

Clenney

WLTZ-TV, Columbus, GA…we told you above that ANDREA CLENNEY will be the next News Director for this SagamoreHill owned NBC affiliate. She joins the station after more than three years as ND for WCJB-TV in Gainesville, FL. Andrea’s also been an ND in Greenville, NC, and Wilmington, NC, spent more than ten years as the Senior Morning Producer for KMGH-TV in Denver, and has also worked in Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Syracuse, and Augusta, GA.

October 20, 2014

Greetings:

VANNA WHITE is known for saying “Big money, big money” as the wheel spins.

We’re saying “Big markets, big markets” as all the news director changes in this week’s report involve big markets.

There are TWO new openings, with ONE position being filled. Those changes leave our count of open ND opportunities at 28.

ONE of those openings is featured in a paid help wanted ad, along with ads for TWO other news management jobs.

We have an obituary for a former Montana ND turned historian.

And we’re happy to report to you that two journalists (one a former news director) are back in the US after a brief detention in Russia. That’s among the items in Names in the News.

Read on for all the details.

New News Director Openings:

KOMO-TV, Seattle, WA…HOLLY GAUNTT is leaving this Sinclair-owned ABC affiliate to return home to Denver as ND for Tribune’s KDVR/KWGN-TV. More on that below. Holly’s been the ND here for more than seven years and will leave after the November book. If her replacement’s is not in place by then, Assistant News Director SARAH GARZA will be the interim ND. That will set up interesting meal-time conversations with her husband MARK GINTHER, who’s the ND of competitor KING-TV.

WFTS-TV, Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL…both News Director BILL McFARLAND and Assistant News Director MICHELE MURRAY left his Scripps-owned ABC affiliate on Thursday. Bill had been the ND there for just over two years, while Michele had been promoted to Assistant ND about 22 months ago. She’s previously worked in Philadelphia, Dallas, Milwaukee and at another Tampa station. TvSpy has more on the possible reasons behind their departures.

And with winter coming, those of you in cold weather climates might want to check out the new-this-week paid help wanted ad for a News Director job at KGTV in sunny San Diego. We told you last week that incumbent JOEL DAVIS is being promoted to Station Manager here.

Newly Named News Director:

KDVR/KWGN-TV, Denver, CO…as noted above (and in this story on the station’s website), HOLLY GAUNTT will be the next ND for this Tribune-owned duopoly. It’s a return home for Holly, who grew up in Denver, went to Colorado University, and began her career with jobs at two other Denver stations. She broke the news to her staff at KOMO-TV in Seattle in this note. While KOMO was owned by Fisher, Holly served as VP/News for the company. She’s a former ND at WTXF-TV in Philadelphia, and has worked in Washington, Baltimore, Oklahoma City and New Orleans. In Washington and Baltimore, she worked for current Tribune Senior VP/News KATHERINE GREEN. At KDVR/KWGN, she replaces ED KOSOWSKI who left after three years to pursue new opportunities.

Thursday, October 16, 2014 UPDATE:

Today brings news of a major shakeup in a top 20 market news department, and the detainment of two American journalists…one a former ND, the other married to a Hearst VP/News…in Russia.

First, both news director BILL McFARLAND and assistant news director MICHELE MURRAY have left WFTS-TV, the Scripps owned ABC affiliate in Tampa-St. Petersburg.

Bill’s been the ND there since 2012, previously spent nine years as an Assistant ND at WABC-TV in New York, and also worked in Washington and Philadelphia.

Michele was promoted to Assistant ND in December, 2012. She had previously been the Managing Editor at the station, and has also worked in Philadelphia, Dallas, Milwaukee and for another Tampa station.

Their departures comes less than a month after a new GM, NICK NICHOLSON, arrived from Phoenix.

On another story, The Boston Globe is reporting that two American Journalists, RANDY COVINGTON and JOE BERGANTINO were briefly detained in St. Petersburg, Russia, for ‘visa issues’.

Randy, a former ND in Philadelphia and Columbia, SC, and Joe, a longtime Boston investigative reporter who is now the executive director and co-founder of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, were released earlier today. They were in Russia to train journalists.

Joe is married to longtime Hearst news executive CANDY ALTMAN.

More on both these stories and all the latest news in our full report later this week.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Wednesday, October 15, 2014, UPDATE:

One of the Denver News Director openings is being filled by a Denver native.

Gauntt

HOLLY GAUNTT, who’s currently ND for Sinclair’s KOMO-TV in Seattle, is returning home to be the ND of Tribune’s duopoly, KDVR/KWGN-TV. Holly tells me she was raised in Denver and that her family has been there since the 60’s. She interned and later worked for what was then KBTV (now KUSA-TV) and KOA-TV (now KCNC-TV).

Holly’s been the ND at KOMO for almost eight years, and previously was the ND for WTXF-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Philadelphia. Of note: she worked for WTTG-TV in Washington and WBAL-TV in Baltimore with current Tribune VP/News KATHERINE GREEN.

Holly’s Linkedin page (click here) contains her full resume.

At KDVR/KWGN, she replaces ED KOSOWSKI, who left last month to pursue new opportunities.

More on this move and all the latest developments in our full newsletter later this week.

In Names in the News, we’ll tell you about a few new news managers. And we’ll tell you about a retirement dinner for a two-time RTDNA chair who’s hanging up his mike after more than 40 years as the head of a statewide network.

We have a taker this week on our free Situations Wanted ad…you can see if he might be a good fit for an opening at your station.

All this and more below!

New News Director Openings:

WTTG-TV, Washington, DC…DANA HAHN has left this FOX o-and-o for a newly acquired FOX o-and-o, KTVU-TV in Oakland/San Francisco. More on that below.

D'Ambrosi

WUSA-TV, Washington, DC…after more than five years as ND, FRED D’AMBROSI resigned on Friday with this memo announcing his departure. He stabilized the ND position at this Gannett-owned CBS affiliate: there’d been five NDs in the five years before he arrived. Fred spent 12 years as a news director in San Diego, 11 as an ND in Milwaukee, and has also worked in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Green Bay and Columbia, MO. His departure leaves Gannett with ND openings in three of their larger markets: Washington, Atlanta (WXIA-TV), and St. Louis (KSDK-TV). The company did fill one ND job this week, as you’ll read below.

Davis

KGTV, San Diego, CA…JOEL DAVIS is being promoted to Station Manager for this Scripps-owned ABC affiliate. He’ll continue to serve as ND until his replacement is hired. Joel’s been here for more than five years. He’d been the Managing Editor for WFTV in Orlando before returning to California, where he’d been the ND for KFSN-TV in Fresno and KBAK-TV in Bakersfield. Joel began his career on-air, as an anchor and reporter in Iowa and Ohio.

WRGB-TV, Albany, NY…the Albany Times-Union reports that LISA JACKSON has left this Sinclair-owned CBS affiliate. She’s worked at the station for 27 years, beginning as a news producer in 1987. During her time here, she’s held a variety of jobs, from producer to executive producer, public affairs manager, creative services director and manager of brand development before becoming ND almost seven years ago.

Last week we told you that LON TEGELS was leaving WXXV-TV in Gulfport, MS, for a job at WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. What we didn’t know then was exactly what that job was. He’ll be the Assistant ND there.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hahn

KTVU-TV, Oakland/San Francisco, CA…as noted above, DANA HAHN has been named ND for this now-owned-by-FOX station. She’s a longtime ND for FOX o-and-o’s, first at WJBK-TV in Detroit for 12 years, and for the last year (and a month or two) at WTTG-TV in Washington. At KTVU, Dana replaces LEE ROSENTHAL who is now the ND at WFXT-TV in Boston, one of the stations Cox acquired in return for KTVU.

WFDC-TV, Washington, DC…SARA SUAREZ is the new ND for this Univision station. She’d been the ND for the Univision station in Boston.

King

WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC…MATT KING moves from one Gannett station to this Gannett owned NBC affiliate as News Director. He’s been the Assistant ND at WXIA-TV in Atlanta for the past 2 1/2 years. He’s a longtime Gannett employee, having worked for seven years as an EP at WUSA-TV, and two years as a producer at WTSP-TV in Tampa. Before moving into management, Matt was an sports anchor in Chattanooga. At WCNC, he replaces CORRIE HARDING who left in February after four years as ND.

WMBD/WYZZ-TV, Peoria, IL…JEFF MULLIGAN will be the next ND for this duopoly. He’s currently the Assistant ND for WISH-TV in Indianapolis, which, as you know, is about to lose its CBS affiliation. Jeff has worked in Cape Girardeau, Kansas City and Terre Haute. He replaces RICK MOLL who left last month (after more than six years as ND) to become ND at WSLS-TV in Roanoke, VA. Nexstar owns WMBD, a CBS affiliate, and operates WYZZ, a FOX station, for another owner.

This week, meet RANDY HANSEN:

I’m a 20+ year award-winning veteran of TV photojournalism who seeks a position as a News Ops Manager or Chief Photographer in a medium to large market pretty much anywhere in the lower 48 states.

I have 11 years as a medium/major market chief with staffs as large as 21 photogs, 5 live trucks, a helicopter, a sat truck, bureau staffers and all the duties that usually go along with the job (and some that don’t).

I also have strong experience as a major market Assignment Manager, segment producer, online content producer and much, much more. I can do everything from teaching newbie photogs the biz, mentoring rookie reporters to educate them how reporting for broadcast truly works to recruiting, hiring and training deeply experienced staffers, union-affiliated or not. I have definite opinions about news photojournalism, live shots (I hate generator noise!), audio, lighting and editing and, if nothing else, contact me and let’s talk shop.

I can be reached at arlen041@gmail.com and my Linkedin page can be found here.

Congratulations to TROY CONHAIN who joins KOLD-TV in Tucson as the Nightside EP. He most recently worked as the morning EP at KPHO-TV in Phoenix and has worked for two stations in Sacramento.

Priddy

Friends and co-workers honored two time RTDNA chairman BOB PRIDDY at a dinner this week in Columbia, MO. Bob’s retiring later this year after more than 40 years as news director of Missourinet, the statewide radio network. You might enjoy this video produced for the event. The entire dinner is here. (Warning: It’s long. Bob’s remarks begin around 33 minutes in.) You can wish him well via an email to: bpriddy@missourinet.com

At that dinner, I shared a table with four former KOMU-TV news directors who between them have an estimated 45 years at that job, training hundreds of broadcast journalists. They almost certainly have taught someone with whom you have worked.

October 4, 2014

Greetings:

THREE New News Director openings, and FOUR newly named news directors make this week’s report an interesting read. One of those newly named ND is a former General Manager.

Those changes leave our list of open ND jobs at 27.

We have paid ads for TWO of those openings, as well as ads for a Corporate Director of News job and an Assistant ND job in Louisiana.

And…in Names in the News…TWO new news managers in Houston and some other management moves to share.

Read on!

New News Director Openings:

KTVU-TV, Oakland/San Francisco, CA…LEE ROSENTHAL, GM TOM RAPONI, and the Cox Media Group ownership are all headed to Boston and current FOX o-and-o WFXT-TV. You likely know by now that Cox is trading KTVU to Fox for both WFXT and WHBQ-TV in Memphis. More below.

Shipley

KSDK-TV, St. Louis, MO…after 33 years at the station, 14 as News Director, MIKE SHIPLEY has announced his retirement from the station. He’ll stay on until his replacement is hired. As you know if you clicked this link in our Wednesday UPDATE, I hired Mike as the Night Assignment Editor in 1981. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Assistant ND, then ND in 2000. Mike previously worked for KLIK-AM in Jefferson City, MO, as well as at the campus radio station at Missouri, KCCS-AM, where we worked together while in school. He’s a class act and a true gentleman, and told me he plans to take some time off and then look for other opportunities.

Tegels

WXXV-TV, Gulfport, MS…LON TEGELS is leaving this FOX/NBC operation owned by Morris Multimedia for a new job as Assistant News Director at WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. Lon started the news department there 16 months ago after spending ten years as an ND in Lima, OH. He’s previously worked as an ND in Rockford, IL, Des Moines, Sioux City, and St. Joseph, MO, and has also worked in Hartford, San Diego, Jacksonville, Richmond, Ft. Myers, Evansville, Boise, Cedar Rapids, and Kirksville, MO.

And while we first told you about this opening last week, please check out the ad for the open ND position at KTIV-TV in Sioux City, IA.

Newly Named News Directors:

Rosenthal

WFXT-TV, Boston, MA…our Wednesday update broke the news that LEE ROSENTHAL will become the ND here when Cox Media Group finalizes its purchase of this current FOX o-and-o. FOX gets Lee’s current station, KTVU-TV in San Francisco/Oakland, and Cox also gets WHBQ-TV in Memphis. Lee was ND here for about 18 months, spent more than four years as an ND in Indianapolis, and has also worked in Columbus, OH, Tampa, Knoxville, and Binghamton, NY. There’s no official word as to the future of current WFXT ND PAUL McGONAGLE. There are lots of rumors on the internet, which you’re welcome to Google.

Giesler

WACH-TV, Columbia, SC…veteran broadcaster JERRY GIESLER is the new ND for this Sinclair owned FOX affiliate. He most recently spent nine years at the GM of a Granite-owned duopoly in Ft. Wayne, IN.  Jerry’s been a GM in a number of markets, including San Francisco, worked in the online world for a while, spent seven years as a consultant for Magid, and also worked in Phoenix as an Assistant ND. His Linkedin page has the whole story. At WACH, he replaces KEVIN PAZDERNIK who will remain with the station as the Special Projects Producer.

KVRR-TV, Fargo, ND…we’re a few weeks late in telling you about the promotion of LEZLIE JOHNSON to News Director here. She’s been a reporter and producer for this FOX affiliate for about a year, and has worked in Grand Forks and another Fargo station. Lezlie succeeds JIM SHAW who stepped down earlier this summer for medical reasons. Jim started the KVRR news department in 1999.

KTAB/KRBC-TV, Abilene, TX…we’re also a little tardy in reporting the promotion of MEGAN DOBBS to news director here. She’s been the executive producer and evening anchor for this CBS/NBC duopoly. Megan replaces KEVIN OSGOOD who left in July to become ND for sister-station WFRV-TV in Green Bay.
