Tuesday, September 2, 2014 UPDATE:

Two items in this UPDATE. I’ve just learned that Sinclair Broadcasting is buying KSNV-TV in Las Vegas. That was, I believe, the last remaining TV station held by JIM ROGERS, who passed away last June. I’m sure you’ll see much of this story in other TV trades over the next day or two.

(Wednesday morning UPDATE: Here’s the news release from Sinclair.)

And for the third consecutive opening, a Houston News Director’s job has been filled via a promotion from within the newsroom.

Granato

Today it’s WENDY GRANATO who’s been promoted to head the news department at KTRK-TV, the ABC o-and-o there. She’s held a variety of roles at the station over the past 12 years, most recently as Senior Executive Producer, Special Projects. She began her career in Lafayette, LA, and moved to Houston in 1993 to work for KNWS-TV, a now defunct 24 hour news channel for which she later served as news director.

General Manager HENRY FLORSHEIM, a former ND himself, sent this note to the staff.

As I mentioned, Wendy’s promotion is the third straight to fill a Houston ND opening, following last July’s move by RHONDA LaVELLE to ND at KPRC-TV and the June 2013 ascension of BOB MORFORD to the top job at KRIV-TV.

I’m arriving in Nashville tomorrow for this year’s RTDNA convention, and hope to see many of you there.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

As a public service to you, our loyal followers, this week’s newsletter will provide lots of holiday reading if you have nothing else to do on this Labor Day.

You can read about FIVE new ND openings, three in major markets and all involving veteran NDs. ONE of those openings was created when a Scripps ND left his job to return to his hometown as ND for another Scripps station.

There are now 27 open ND jobs on our list. Remarkably, THREE of those ND openings are in the same zip code!

We have SEVEN paid help wanted ads: as if often the case, they’re in a wide range of job responsibilities and areas of the country.

THREE obituaries are below, including one for a former NBC o-and-o ND and GM.

And we have a handful of Names in the News and a number of interesting General Manager moves.

By the way, if you’re going to be in Nashville for the RTDNA convention this week, I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Until then, read on for a full newsletter.

New News Director Openings:

Crooke

WXIA-TV, Atlanta, GA…congratulations to ELLEN CROOKE who’s been promoted. She’s been named VP/News for Gannett, replacing longtime exec ROB MENNIE who’s moving to GM of the company’s duopoly in Jacksonville, FL. (More on that below in our Names in the News section). Ellen’s been ND here since 2008, first joined Gannett as ND of WGRZ-TV in Buffalo in 2002. She’s a former ND in South Bend, and has also worked in Louisville, Rochester, NY, and Albany, NY.

KDVR/KWGN-TV, Denver, CO…in one of two UPDATES we shared with you earlier this week, we told you that ED KOSOWSKI would leave this Tribune owned FOX/CW duopoly when his contract expired in early September. GM PETER MARONEY explained the move in this note to the staff. Ed’s been here three years, has been an ND in Boston and San Francisco, and worked in Miami and Washington, as well as for CNBC.

KMGH-TV, Denver, CO…we also reported this move in an UPDATE earlier this week. JEFF HARRIS is leaving this Scripps owned ABC affiliate to return to his hometown and another Scripps ABC station, WEWS-TV in Cleveland. More on that below.

Brinkman

WEAR-TV, Pensacola, FL…KYLE BRINKMAN has left this Sinclair-owned ABC affiliate after eight years as news director. His departure comes shortly after a new General Manager arrived at the station. Kyle’s a former ND in Chattanooga who’s also worked in Baltimore, Norfolk, Memphis, Columbus, OH, and Huntsville (twice). The station has had two news directors in 30 years (Kyle succeeded 22 year station veteran PETER NEUMANN.)

Cummings

WICU/WSEE-TV, Erie, PA…another veteran news director is on the move here, as BILL CUMMINGS will leave this duopoly when his contract expires in October. He’s previously been a news director in Yuma, AZ, Tallahassee, FL, Evansville, IN, Johnson City, TN, Tucson, and Huntington/Charleston, WV. He’s also worked in sales for several companies, including weather vendors Baron Services and Weather Central.

Newly Named News Directors:

Harris

WEWS-TV, Cleveland, OH…we mentioned above that JEFF HARRIS is headed back to his hometown as ND of this Scripps-owned ABC affiliate. Jeff’s been the ND for Scripps’ KMGH-TV in Denver since October, 2008. The Denver Post offers more on his time there. Jeff worked at WEWS earlier in his career as a producer before leaving for his first stint at KMGH. He left Denver for four years at KPIX-TV in San Francisco before returning to KMGH as News Director. At WEWS, he replace JILL MANUEL who left the station in March after 5+ years as ND

Obituaries:

Ward

I’m sorry to report the death last Wednesday of former ND and GM MIKE WARD. He was 63 and had suffered a massive stroke in 2008, shortly after leaving his job as ND for WUSA-TV in Washington. He’d also been the ND for NBC’s WMAQ-TV in Chicago, went from there to NBC’s WCAU-TV in Philadelphia as Creative Services Director, and later served as GM for WNCN-TV in Raleigh when NBC owned that station. Mike started as a photographer in his home town of Sioux Falls, SD, and later worked in Cleveland. He’s survived by his wife MAUREEN and other family members, as detailed in this obituary.

Two obituaries from Cincinnati:

Seventeen year WLWT-TV employee DAVID ROSCH died this week. He most recently had been news operations manager but held a variety of management positions at the station.

KYLE HILL, who once served as Acting News Director for WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, died last Sunday at the age of 80. He was an anchor/reporter at the station who later worked in public relations.

Situations Wanted:

We offer a free situations wanted ad to news managers who are looking for a new opportunity. If you’d like to state your case to a well targeted audience, email me an item (max. 150 words). You may include a link to a website, an email address, and a photo. You must include your name. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Names in the News…and other things:

Former KRIV-TV (Houston) Morning Executive Producer MARGARET CORDES has filed suit against the station, claiming she lost her job after she was diagnosed with cancer and had to take time off from work. More in this story.

J.B. OZUNA has been promoted to VP of digital media for Schurz Communications. He was sales and revenue development director. J.B. has worked in Denver and San Antonio.

And I want to clarity our item last week. In reporting NORA ZIMMETT’s move to the Weather Channel, I got her title wrong. She’s Senior VP of Live Programming.  JENNIFER RIBGY is still the VP of Live Programming. Apologies to all involved.

GENERAL MANAGER NEWS:

ROBERT “BUBBA” BURNS has been promoted to VP/General Manager for Sunbeam’s WHDH/WLVI-TV in Boston. He’s been the Director of Sales there.

Vann

LES VANN will be the next GM for LIN Media’s WISH/WNDY-TV in Indianapolis. He’ll have his hands full: as most of you know, WISH will lose its CBS affiliation at the end of the year. Les began his career in news, but has most recently been a GM for LIN’s duopoly in Savannah, GA. He’s also run stations in Cincinnati, Syracuse, Ashville, NC, Cedar Rapids, and Champaign, IL.

STEVE DOERR will replace Les as GM in Savannah at WJCL/WTGS-TV until the previously announced sale of the stations has been finalized.

Mennie

We mentioned above that ROB MENNIE is headed to Jacksonville, FL, as GM for WTLV/WJXX-TV, the Gannett owned duopoly there. He replaces ERIC LAND who left the stations after two years as GM. Rob’s been VP/News for Gannett, is a former ND for stations in Washington and Dayton, worked in Atlanta and Phoenix, and began his career as a photographer in Columbus, OH. He rose to EP at WCMH-TV and later worked at WSYX-TV in Columbus.

August 24, 2014

Tuesday, August 26, 2014 UPDATE:

Another day, another Denver News Director move.

Harris

Today it’s KMGH-TV’s JEFF HARRIS, who’s leaving one Scripps ABC affiliate for another Scripps ABC station, WEWS-TV in Cleveland. It’s a homecoming for Jeff: he’s from Cleveland, and worked at WEWS earlier in his career, from 1997-2000 as a producer.

He left to become EP/Special Projects for KMGH, then left KMGH for a stint as an investigative producer at KPIX-TV in San Francisco. Jeff returned to Denver and KMGH as News Director in October, 2008.

He replaced BYRON GRANDY at KMGH when Byron was promoted to General Manager. Today, Byron sent this note to the staff.

In Cleveland, Jeff replaces JILL MANUEL, who left in March after 5 1/2 years as ND.

We’ll have more on this move…and yesterday’s departure of KDVR/KWGN-TV ND ED KOSOWSKI in our full report later this week.

Monday, August 25, 2014 UPDATE:

A veteran news director is leaving a top 20 market to pursue new opportunities.

ED KOSOWSKI will leave Tribune’s KDVR/KWGN-TV when his contract expires next week after three years as ND for this duopoly. In this note to the staff, General Manager PETER MARONEY says Ed resigned to pursue new ‘personal and professional goals.’

Ed’s been an ND in San Francisco and Boston, worked in Washington and Miami, as well as for CNBC. His Linkedin page has the whole story.

One other note.  When I first posted this Saturday, I told you that NORA ZIMNETT was going to the Weather Channel as VP of Live Programming.  She’s actually Senior VP of Live Programming.  JENNIFER RIGBY remains as VP of Live Programming.  It’s been corrected below.

More on all this in our full newsletter later this week.

Greetings:

FOUR new news directors top this week’s report, but the ONE new ND opening is in the number one market.

Those changes mean there are now 23 open ND jobs on our list.

We have TWO paid help wanted ads this week for EP positions, one on the West Coast and one on the East Coast.

There’s an obituary for the mother of a longtime newswoman, several news manager changes, and a handful of GM moves, as well.

Read on for details.

New News Director Openings:

Effron

WPIX-TV, New York, NY…MARK EFFRON will leave this Tribune-owned CW affiliate in October, after about 18 months as news director.  Mark tells me he hopes to do some teaching, some consulting, and to spend time with his family, including his mother, who, as you learned last week, lost her husband and Mark’s dad earlier this month.  Mark had worked for a public radio station in New York before returning to TV.  He’s a former MSNBC executive and a longtime VP/News for the Post-Newsweek stations.

Newly Named News Directors:

Wilson

WPTV, West Palm Beach, FL…DAN WILSON sheds the ‘interim’ title as he has been named News Director for this Scripps owned NBC affiliate.  Dan’s been the Assistant ND for the company’s Phoenix station, KNXV-TV for the past eight years.  He also spent ten years in Las Vegas, as a producer, Executive Producer, and Assistant ND at what was then KVBC-TV and is now KSNV-TV. Dan worked briefly in Pocatello, ID.  He’s been the interim ND here since MIKE GARBER left the station in July to become ND for KTVT-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth.

Reams

WKOW-TV, Madison, WI…ED REAMS makes the short trip from Milwaukee to Madison to become ND for this Quincy owned ABC affiliate. Ed’s been the Assistant ND for WISN-TV in Milwaukee since 2011. He earlier served for five years as ND at WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, VA, and worked as a reporter and anchor in Atlanta, New Orleans, Raleigh, and Roanoke. At WKOW, he replaces JOE RADSKE who went across town to become an EP at WISC-TV last month after two years as ND.

WWAY-TV, Wilmington, NC…KEVIN WUZZARDO has been promoted to ND for this Morris Multimedia owned ABC affiliate. He first joined the station in 2006 as morning anchor, moved into management in 2010 and was named Assistant ND last June. Kevin replaces SCOTT PICKEY who left the station earlier this month after more than four years as ND.

WAGM-TV, Presque Isle, ME…it appears that KELLY O’MARA has been promoted to news director for this FOX/CBS combo. That’s according to the station’s website, where, in a different place, she’s listed as the morning anchor. CHRIS WEIMER, who had been the ND and anchor there, left to take a reporting job at WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD.

Greetings:

A slow week for news director movement, with just ONE newly named news director and, for the second consecutive week, NO new ND openings. As always, we remind you to let us know of any ND changes via email: rick@rickgevers.com

There are now 25 open ND jobs on our list.

We have ONE paid help wanted ad, and welcome back WeatherMetrics whose ad appears just below.

We have a taker on our free ‘Situations Wanted’ feature. Learn more about him.

And there’s lots of items in our “Names in the News and Other Things”, including a look at local print coverage of this week’s surprising affiliation change here in Indianapolis. We have two new news managers in Chicago to tell you about, and some GM changes, including the retirement of a photographer-turned-ND-turned-Group VP/News-turned GM.

This week, meet ANDREW GILLFILLAN:

Gillfillan

If you are looking for a passionate news executive to energize your newsroom, look no more.

My name is Andrew Gillfillan, the assistant news director at WXMI-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. (DMA 39). With more than a decade of experience in both medium and major market television stations, I have transformed stale working newsrooms into vibrant brainstorming and investigative centers built on a foundation of watchdog journalism and weather dominance.

I decided not to renew my contract at the end of November so that I can, once again, move out of the West Michigan for my next big challenge as a ND, AND or EP. Please click here for more information.

Names in the News…and other things:

I’m sure by now most of you know of the blockbuster affiliation news here in Indianapolis this week. CBS is moving its affiliate from longtime (58 year) partner WISH-TV to WTTV, currently the CW affiliate. It’s owned by Tribune, which also owns WXIN-TV, the FOX affiliate. As of this writing, LIN Media, owner of WISH, has still not announced its plans for the station. Click here for local coverage from The Indianapolis Business Journal and The Indianapolis Star.

Two management moves in Chicago:

WGN-TV promoted SANDY PUDAR to Assistant ND. She’s been the morning EP for this Tribune-owned station, and replaces JENNIFER LYONS who vacated that job when she was named ND after GREG CAPUTO’s retirement earlier this summer. And JESSE HAMILTON moves north to WLS-TV in Chicago as the new morning EP for this ABC o-and-o. He’s been the EP for prime time for the Weather Channel since November 2010. He’s also worked in Phoenix and Oklahoma City.

Congratulations to CHERIE GRZECH who’s been bumped up senior director of the Washington bureau and politics for FOX News. She’s been director of news and politics for FOX. She’s a former ND in Lansing, MI, and has also worked in Portland, OR and Raleigh, NC.

KELLEY DICKENS returns to WBND-TV in South Bend as the Assistant ND. She was the 11:00 producer there when this ABC affiliate launched news in 2011. She later left for a producer job in Norfolk. She’s also worked in Flint and Detroit.

GENERAL MANAGER NEWS:

ASHLEY GOLD MESSINA has been named GM of Media General’s KRON-TV in San Francisco. She’s been the GM for WDCW-TV in Washington, DC.

And there are apparently about to be two GM openings in Columbus, OH. I am told, though I have not seen it reported anywhere, that DAN MELLON, GM of Sinclair’s WSYX/WTTE-TV is headed to Washington to be GM of Sinclair’s newly acquired WJLA-TV.

And old friend and longtime newsman-turned-general manager DAN BRADLEY has announced his retirement at the end of the year. Dan’s been GM of Media General’s WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH, since 2009. His background is in news, including eight years as VP/News for Media General and 21 years at WFLA-TV in Tampa where he began as a photojournalist and worked his way up to ND. He also worked in Dayton and Toledo as a photographer, but cleaned up well for the corporate office!
