Monday, July 7, 2014 UPDATE:

There’s a new news director in the number five market today.

Garber

MIKE GARBER has been named VP and News Director for KTVT/KTXA-TV, the CBS owned duopoly in Dallas.

For the past two years, Mike’s been the ND at Scripps’ WPTV in West Palm Beach. He served as four years as ND for the Gannett duopoly in Jacksonville (WLTV/WJXX) and more than five years as ND of Gannett’s WLTX-TV in Columbia, SC. He’s also worked as an Assistant ND in Tucson, and as a sports producer in San Francisco and for two stations in Tampa.

At KTVT, he replaces ADRIENNE ROARK who left last month to become General Manager for KOIN-TV in Portland, OR.

More on this story and all the week’s news in our full newsletter later this week.

Greetings:

Just ONE new news director in this report from a holiday shortened week, although that new ND is in the number three market. And for the second consecutive week, I’m not aware of any new openings.

That change lowers our listing of open ND positions to 25.

We have THREE new help wanted ads in a wide variety of market sizes. And we’re featuring ads for the Kneeland Project and for a finance reporting award that will pay the winner $1,000.

Names in the News features a lot of news managers taking new jobs, and a veteran ND turned General Manager lands a new GM job.

Details on all that…and more…below.

None, that I know of. Do you know of any? Then shoot me an email! rick@rickgevers.com

Newly Named News Directors:

Lyons

WGN-TV, Chicago, IL…JENNIFER LYONS has been promoted to ND for this Tribune owned station. She’s worked there for 21 years, most recently as Assistant ND since 2008. This story on the station’s website details her lengthy career at the station. Jennifer has also worked in Des Moines and Davenport, IA. She replaces GREG CAPUTO who retired last Friday after more than eleven years as ND here.

An update on a story from last week. We told you that NORA BALDNER had left her job as ND for KHQA-TV in Quincy. We’ve since learned she’ll be an assistant professor of communication at Quincy University.

Morning Executive Producer, WTNH-TV, Hartford/New Haven, CT:

WTNH — the ABC affiliate in the Hartford/New Haven, CT market — has an immediate opening for a morning show Executive Producer.

So what are we looking for?

A real morning show specialist and leader. Someone who can guide the coverage on their shift. Make the important calls as to crews, resources and what gets on the air.

A Watchdog for the Brand. We’re the Voice of the People. That means our stories have to have some viewer benefit and they have to be told through the eyes and voices of real people. We also say “We’ve Got Your Back” a lot: we want to do stories that stand up for the regular guy, ask tough questions and hold people accountable.

The Kneeland Project Accepting Applications Now

Take a few minutes during your holiday weekend and apply today!

You have only a few days left to apply for The Kneeland Project’s next session, which will be held September 24-27 in Austin, Texas.

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for 18 selected participants. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career, and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

You’ll join this session’s faculty – Joan Barrett, Kevin Benz, Paul Dughi, Jerry Gumbert and Bill Seitzler – to explore the exciting challenges that face our industry, and you’ll leave the program with a solid plan to guide your leadership decisions starting the day you return to your newsroom. This isn’t theoretical information that you will put on a shelf and neglect. Every participant will walk away with concrete action items to implement immediately that will make a difference in their station…and their life.

It’s an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results. Journalists return to their stations refreshed and ready to tackle the sometimes overwhelming challenges newsrooms now face.

June 30, 2014

Greetings:

Great to see some of you at this past week’s IRE conference, which welcomed a record attendance of over 1,500 journalists (and a few agents!) Another great year of broadcast participation, with Gannett, Scripps, and the NBC owned stations group particularly well represented. (Apologies to any other groups who sent large contingents.) I’ve said before that IRE is my favorite conference, with practical lessons that you can put to work on Monday.

Mark your calendars (and plan budgets) for the next conference in Philadelphia, June 4-7, 2015.

This week’s newsletter features TWO newly named NDs, with, to my knowledge, NO new openings, bringing our count of open jobs to 26.

Please note our advertisers this week, including the Carole Kneeland Project, the NEFE/RTDNA Personal Finance Awards, ExciteM, and AccuWeather, along with help wanted ads for THREE newsroom positions in a wide variety of market sizes.

We have an obituary for a longtime Alabama news director and anchor, a trade of general managers in two top ten markets, and a number of news managers on the move.

All that…and more…as you read on.

The Kneeland Project Accepting Applications Now

You don’t want to miss this opportunity. Apply today!

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications for their September 24-27 session in Austin, TX. Applications are due Friday, July 11 and are available at: kneelandproject.org/apply

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for 18 selected news directors. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals: Kneeland takes care of the rest.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career, and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

This fall’s participants will be joined by some of the best and brightest leaders in the industry, but they won’t provide didactic, one-way lectures. On the contrary. Kneeland is seeking applications from news directors with high-level expertise, insight, and experience to make this a truly unique opportunity.

Most importantly, journalists will leave the program with a solid plan to guide their leadership decisions starting the day they return to their newsroom. This isn’t theoretical information that news managers will put on a shelf and neglect.

Names in the News…and other things:

Friday marked the last day on the job for two longtime news directors. GREG CAPUTO, spent much of his career in Chicago, the last 11+ at WGN-TV. He’ll turn 65 next month. Chicago media writer ROBERT FEDER has more in this article. And in Seattle, BOB JORDAN also stepped down on Friday. He marks his 68th birthday in July, as well. Best wishes to both for a long and happy retirement.

Also moving on after a long career is JACK MAHER, who’s leaving Denver’s KUSA-TV after 34 years on the morning show. He was the first producer when the program began and is now Senior Producer. The station paid tribute during his final newscast.

An update to our UPDATE earlier this week on the trade of stations between Fox and the Cox Media Group. The General Managers of the two largest stations in the deal, soon-to-be former Cox stations, KTVU/KICU-TV, and about to be a former FOX o-and-o WFXT-TV in Boston, will trade places according to this article. WHBQ-TV in Memphis also switches from Fox ownership to Cox.

LANA DURBAN-SCOTT will serve as interim station manager for Scripps’ WEWS-TV in Cleveland while GM SAM ROSENWASSER recovers from some health issues. She worked at the station earlier in her career. She’ll return to her job as Director of News Strategy & Operations for the company.

It’s a return to Los Angeles for MATT GOLDBERG, who’s headed back to KNBC-TV as Managing Editor. He’s currently the Assistant ND for another NBC o-and-o, KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco. Matt worked at KNBC before moving to the Bay Area. He’s also other stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and in Houston.

WRTV in Indianapolis has named SHAWN REYNOLDS as its morning EP. He’s been a producer at the Weather Channel, and has also worked at two stations in Atlanta, and for stations in Huntington/Charleston, WV, Lexington, and Hazard, KY.

ROD JACKSON joins KSNT/KTKA-TV in Topeka as Assistant News Director. He most recently was ND for KGAN/KFXA-TV in Cedar Rapids, IA. Many of you may know him from his days as a producer for ABC NewsOne in Los Angeles.

General Manager Notes:

Greetings:

There are TWO new openings, both in 100+ markets, to tell you about this week, and, to my knowledge, NO new NDs were hired this week.  Those changes bring our total of open ND jobs to 27.

ONE of those 27 jobs is featured in a paid ad below, along with THREE ads for Executive Producer openings in a wide range of markets.

Names in the News features good news about longtime consultant DAVE SMITH and longtime newsman SCOTT LIBIN, along with a number of news managers on the move and some GM changes, too.

Finally, last week I mentioned that we’d moved and have new telephone numbers.  Due to some spectacularly inept customer service by my former former phone company TDS Telcom (Motto: America’s seventh largest local exchange telephone company. Seriously.), I’d like to repeat the new numbers and encourage you to update your contact list.

New work number is: 317-635-7912.  New fax number is 317-635-7919.  And the new address is:

355 E. Ohio St. #303
Indianapolis IN 46204

All this week’s news after this ad from a returning advertiser, ExciteM!

There were a total of 22 people in the exchange program, 11 donors and 11 recipients at eight medical centers. While he recovers, Dave can’t accept flowers, but a donation to the PKD Foundation would be appreciated. Click here to learn more. Your note of well wishes should go to: dave@smithgeiger.com

Greetings:

One small bit of housekeeping before we move to our normal business, if you’ll indulge me.

The new telephone number is 317-635-7912.

The new fax number is 317-635-7919.

And our new address at the World Headquarters is:

355 E. Ohio St. #303
Indianapolis IN 46204

Email, of course, stays the same: rick@rickgevers.com

On to business:

THREE new NDs and TWO new openings top this week’s delayed report. Those changes bring our total of open ND jobs to 26.

We have ONE ad for an EP in Kansas City.

THREE obituaries, though. One for a former Florida ND, one for a well known station owner out West, and one for the mother of a longtime Magid and NBC executive. Those items are below, as well as a few items in Names in the News, including this year’s National Edward R. Murrow Award winners.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

WTLV/WJXX-TV, Jacksonville, FL…KATHY WILLIAMS resigned on Friday after almost two years as ND for the Gannett owned duopoly. Kathy’s been away from the station for two months, on leave due to ongoing medical issues in her family and has been commuting back and forth to Texas.  She’s a former ND in Houston and for two different stations in Cleveland. She’s also worked in Chicago and Washington, as well as two other stints in Houston.

WSET-TV, Lynchburg, VA…we’ve had this opening on our list for several months despite some confusion as to whether or not BOB CASHEN had actually left the station. It now appears Bob officially left last month, after less than a year here.

KLDO/KXOF-TV, Laredo, TX…DIANA CASTILLO is leaving this Entravision owned duopoly for an ND job in Iowa. More details below.

Newly Named News Directors:

WXTV, New York, NY…ESTEBAN CRESTE has been named ND for this Univision owned station. He’s a former ND for Spanish language stations in Los Angeles and Chicago. He’s been the EP and news director for Fox Deportes in Mexico City for the past three years. At WXTV, he replaces NORMA MORATO who left the station in May after 13 years as ND.

WICD-TV, Champaign, IL…MIKE TRUETT is now ND for this Sinclair owned station. The company had been using one ND for WICD and WICS-TV in Springfield, IL, but have now separated the positions. He’s been the Assistant ND there since April, 2013. Mike’s also worked for two stations in Memphis, sandwiched around a three year stint in the Peace Corps.

KMEG/KPTH-TV, Sioux City, IA…DIANA CASTILLO is joining this duopoly as ND. She’s been the ND for another duopoly, KLDO/KXOF-TV in Laredo, TX. Diana replaces AARON WEISS who was ND here for about 2 1/2 years.
