On to business:

THREE new NDs and TWO new openings top this week’s delayed report. Those changes bring our total of open ND jobs to 26.

We have ONE ad for an EP in Kansas City.

THREE obituaries, though. One for a former Florida ND, one for a well known station owner out West, and one for the mother of a longtime Magid and NBC executive. Those items are below, as well as a few items in Names in the News, including this year’s National Edward R. Murrow Award winners.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

WTLV/WJXX-TV, Jacksonville, FL…KATHY WILLIAMS resigned on Friday after almost two years as ND for the Gannett owned duopoly. Kathy’s been away from the station for two months, on leave due to ongoing medical issues in her family and has been commuting back and forth to Texas.  She’s a former ND in Houston and for two different stations in Cleveland. She’s also worked in Chicago and Washington, as well as two other stints in Houston.

WSET-TV, Lynchburg, VA…we’ve had this opening on our list for several months despite some confusion as to whether or not BOB CASHEN had actually left the station. It now appears Bob officially left last month, after less than a year here.

KLDO/KXOF-TV, Laredo, TX…DIANA CASTILLO is leaving this Entravision owned duopoly for an ND job in Iowa. More details below.

Newly Named News Directors:

WXTV, New York, NY…ESTEBAN CRESTE has been named ND for this Univision owned station. He’s a former ND for Spanish language stations in Los Angeles and Chicago. He’s been the EP and news director for Fox Deportes in Mexico City for the past three years. At WXTV, he replaces NORMA MORATO who left the station in May after 13 years as ND.

WICD-TV, Champaign, IL…MIKE TRUETT is now ND for this Sinclair owned station. The company had been using one ND for WICD and WICS-TV in Springfield, IL, but have now separated the positions. He’s been the Assistant ND there since April, 2013. Mike’s also worked for two stations in Memphis, sandwiched around a three year stint in the Peace Corps.

KMEG/KPTH-TV, Sioux City, IA…DIANA CASTILLO is joining this duopoly as ND. She’s been the ND for another duopoly, KLDO/KXOF-TV in Laredo, TX. Diana replaces AARON WEISS who was ND here for about 2 1/2 years.

Those changes bring our total of open ND jobs to 25.

We again feature TWO ads from network o-and-o’s in the top three markets.

And there’s just one item in Names in the News this week, and that’s an update on an item we told you about last issue. Don’t forget to send me your news!

Read on for all this week’s news.

NH1 News will be seen on the independent station WBIN TV in the Boston/Manchester DMA starting this fall. Our focus will be all things New Hampshire with bureaus in Manchester/Derry, Laconia, Nashua, Lebanon and Portsmouth. The NH1 Media Center in the state capital of Concord will be completed soon and will stand as the preeminent media facility in the state, housing NH1 TV, NH1 Radio, NH1.com and studios for six Binnie Media radio stations.

Robb’s been at CNN for four years, and earlier had been an ND in Portland, ME, Knoxville, and Wilmington, NC, and worked at MSNBC and CNBC.

He served four years as ND in Grand Rapids, and five years before that as EP. He’s also worked in Las Vegas, Sacramento and Phoenix. May 31, 2014

Greetings:

I hope you had a nice holiday.

I know FOUR people who probably did. They’ve all taken new ND jobs this week, bringing our count of open ND jobs to 26. And I’m not aware of any new openings.

TWO network o-and-o’s in the top three markets are running paid ads below for news management openings. They’re among the FOUR ads this week.

And we’d like to welcome back Accu-Weather as an advertiser. Check out their offerings in the ad just below.

I’m sorry to report the passing of a longtime syndicator in our business who many veteran NDs will remember. His obituary is below.

Names in the News features a few items, including a new role for a longtime Boston newswoman. And we have an item about the departure of the most senior Indianapolis General Manager.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

None that I know of.

Newly Named News Directors:

Seals

WHAS-TV, Louisville, KY…veteran newsman DAVID SEALS gets his first ND job as he takes over June 2nd at this Gannett-owned ABC affiliate. He’s been at Sinclair’s WZTV in Nashville since September 2011, first as Morning EP and then as Assistant ND. He spent nine years as an Assistant ND in Norfolk, and has also worked in Syracuse, New Haven, Albany, NY and Binghamton, NY.  This job’s been open a long time…like since last September, when MARK NEERMAN left. The station did hire JOSH EURE in February but he later decided to remain in Phoenix (details here).

Roe

KHQ-TV, Spokane, WA…JESSICA ROE returns to a newsroom as she’s been named news director for this Cowles owned NBC affiliate. Jessica’s worked for the State of Colorado for the past four years, but earlier spent five years as an EP at KUSA-TV in Denver, as well as working for three other Denver stations, and in San Francisco, Albuquerque, and Colorado Springs. Her Linkedin bio is here. Jessica replaces NEAL BOLING who spent four years as ND before being promoted to Station Manager in April. Neal tells me Jessica learned about the opportunity via the station’s ad in this newsletter.

Lauber

KWTX-TV, Waco, TX…MIKEL LAUBER moves within Gray TV as he’s been named ND for this CBS affiliate. Mikel’s been the ND for sister Gray CBS affiliate WSAW-TV in Wausaw, WI since 2011. He’s also anchored there. At KWTX, he replaces longtime news director VIRGIL TETER who’s moving to a new role as Special Projects Director.  He’s been at the station for almost 25 years, much of it as VP/News Director, part of a 54 year career in news which has taken him to San Antonio, Sacramento, Omaha, Beaumont, and Denver.

Laszewski

WSAW-TV, Wausaw, WI…JESSICA LASZEWSKI continues her tour of Wisconsin as she becomes the next ND for the Gray TV owned CBS affiliate. She most recently served as an EP for WISC-TV in Madison, where she’s been since 2005. She earlier worked in Green Bay, WI, Eau Claire, WI, and for another Madison station. She’s a graduate…take a guess now…of the University of Wisconsin. She replaces MIKEL LAUBER who, as you know from the item above, is off to be ND for another Gray TV station, KWTX-TV in Waco, TX.

Walt kindly sent me a few Kiplinger books when I started my agent business in 1995. His full obituary can be found by clicking here.

May 24, 2014

Greetings:

I hope you’re enjoying a great Memorial Day weekend.

This week’s report features more on the retirement of a veteran ND whose departure we told you about yesterday in an UPDATE. That’s one of TWO new openings this week, both in large markets. And we have just ONE new opening to share with you.

Our always unofficial count of open ND jobs stands at 28. Please, no wagering.

THREE of those openings are among the FOUR paid ads below.

Funeral services were held today for former ND MIKE GEORGE. His obituary, complete with memorial information if you so choose, can be found below.

And just two item in Names in the News, including the retirement of a former ND and anchor who spent 43 years at the same station, and an update on a job change for a well known former ND and Poynter exec.
All this and more below.

New News Director Openings:

Jordan

KIRO-TV, Seattle, WA…BOB JORDAN will retire at the end of June, right before his 68th birthday in July, after almost two years as ND here and 45 years in our business. Bob surprised his staff at this Cox-owned CBS affiliate with the news yesterday. His long career has included ND jobs at another Seattle station, three stints running the news department at Cox’s WFTV in Orlando (where he also once anchored), as well as serving as ND in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Tampa. Bob also was a GM for WPTV in West Palm Beach. The Orlando Sentinel’s HAL BOEDEKER calls him ‘one of a kind’ in this article.

KMAX-TV, Sacramento, CA…we reported a few weeks ago that BRENT BAADER was leaving this CBS owned CW affiliate at the end of the May book, but the company was debating how to replace him. As you’ll see by the paid ad below, that decision’s been made, and the search is now on for a news director. Check out the ad….and if you apply…let ’em know where you saw the opening.

Newly Named News Directors:

Moore

KSL-TV, Salt Lake City, UT…CHRIS MOORE has been promoted to news director here. He’s been Senior EP for this Bonneville-owned NBC affiliate, and previously worked for many years as the 10:0) PM producer. Before joining KSL, Chris worked as a reporter in Rapid City, SD, and as a producer in Reno. He succeeds TANYA VEA. We told you last month that Tanya was being promoted to Station Manager for KSL, which is the top job there. She reports directly to DARRELL BROWN, who’s the president of Bonneville.

In our report last week on JACK PAGANO’s appointment as ND for WAKA-TV in Montgomery, AL, we told you he’d previously been ND at WAAY-TV in Huntsville. Not true. He was ND for WWAY-TV in Wilmington. And he actually retired from the Army in 2007, not ‘recently’ as we reported.
