January 3, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

It didn’t take long for the New Year to produce two big stories: the pending retirement of a longtime news director and a big promotion for a corporate news executive.

Berra

Berra

In Tampa, veteran news director BILL BERRA has announced his retirement at the end of March. Here’s his note to the staff along with the note from his GM, SKIP VALET.

As Bill mentions in his note, he’s worked for almost every major company, and has been a news director in Columbus, OH, Orlando, Phoenix, St. Louis and Memphis. More on his background here (at least back to 1988). He plans to stay in Tampa.

McCreery

McCreery

The other big story of the day comes from Meredith, where PATRICK McCREERY has been promoted to Executive VP of Operations for the group. Here’s the note from President PAUL KARPOWICZ in which he explains that all GMs will report to Patrick.

Patrick’s been VP of News and Marketing for Meredith for the past four years. He’s been with the company since 2002, starting as an EP in Phoenix, moving to Portland as Assistant ND, then ND, and eventually general manager.

I’m just guessing here, but I suspect we have a lot of big news in the weeks and months ahead.

regards,

Greetings:

Hope 2018 is everyone you and yours hope it will be.

For another holiday week, a surprising amount of activity. We have TWO new news director openings, with ONE newly named news director. That means our always unofficial list of openings stands at 22.

Just ONE item in Names in the News this week. We always welcome your submissions.

Among our THREE obituaries this week is one for a legendary Buffalo anchor who once served as his station’s ND. The others were for a well known former GM in Orlando and for the mother of a four-time news director.

We have ONE new GM to tell you about…as a former news executive moves into the big chair in a top 30 market. And we have a very interesting list of longtime general managers who have retired during the past year.

That’s all below.

Don’t party too much tonight. 🙂

IRV WEINSTEIN, a legendary anchor and one-time news director at Buffalo’s WKBW-TV, died this week at the age of 87. He suffered from ALS. Irv anchored for 34 years at WKBW, known for his rapid fire delivery and phrases like “pistol-packing punks”. This obituary includes his last newscast, delivered 19 years ago today.

Former WESH-TV (Orlando) General Manager JOHN E. EVANS died earlier this month. He was well known for his on-air editorials during his tenure at the station, and a noted civic booster. There’s a reason I included his middle initial, as you’ll find out if you read this.

Finally, our sympathy to WTHR-TV (Indianapolis) News Director KATHY HOSTETTER on the loss of her mother. EMILY HOSTETTER died December 22nd at the age of 75. More on her passing here. In additional to Indianapolis, Kathy’s been a news director in Ft. Wayne, Norfolk and Louisville and has worked in Grand Rapids and San Francisco.

We told you a few weeks ago that longtime Houston newsman RICK McFARLAND was retiring at the end of the year. His tenure in the market earned him this Q & A with longtime Houston media blogger MIKE McGUFF. Rick arrived in Houston in 1979 as a photographer at KHOU-TV, moved to KPRC-TV soon thereafter as a sports photographer, and eventually worked his way to ND before finishing his career as Senior Executive Producer. Full disclosure: we were college classmates at Missouri.

And check this unofficial list of veteran general managers (or GMs who became corporate executives) who have retired during 2017. 14 in all, nine of them former news directors. And that just includes those who retired and were not ousted, as best as I can tell. (While I’d like to take credit for compiling the list, thanks to one of the folks on the list…just retired Scripps executive STEVE WASSERMAN for sharing.)  And if you know of someone who should be included, please let me know.

News today from Milwaukee, where a veteran news director has resigned her job after 3 1/2 years.

December 16, 2017

Greetings:

A flurry of open news director jobs this week, TWO in top 12 markets, highlight this earlier-than-usual edition of our newsletter.

One of the reasons for our uncharacteristic Saturday delivery is the breaking news from Seattle where a veteran ND is retiring. See more below in our New News Director Openings section.

That move is one of THREE new openings, and, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO newly named NDs.

Our count of open jobs is 18.

Lots of items in Names in the News, including a new EP in New York, a new Assistant ND in Seattle, a former Memphis ND is out of work less than two weeks before returning to her former company in a new role, and a longtime Los Angeles newsman is retiring.

Read on!

Newly Named News Directors:

I’m not aware of any this week. We always appreciate your tips, though, if you know something we don’t!

New News Director Openings:

KCBS/KCAL-TV, Los Angeles, CA…we told you in a late Wednesday night UPDATE that BILL DALLMAN has left this CBS owned duopoly. KOMO-TV, Seattle, WA…late yesterday veteran ND PAT COSTELLO announced his pending retirement. He’ll leave this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate when the February rating period ends. He’s been ND here for three years. GM JANENE DRAFS sent this note to the staff, which includes a note from Pat. Pat told me he’ll split time between Seattle and Phoenix, where he and wife still own a place from his three years as ND at KNXV-TV. He spent more than twelve years at KING-TV in Seattle, the first seven years as ND and later Station Manager. He’s also been a news director in Chicago and Salt Lake City, an assistant news director in Baltimore, and began his career as a photojournalist in Indianapolis and Columbia, MO.

Greetings:

While there wasn’t a lot of ND movement this week (ONE new opening and ONE newly named ND, leaving our list of open jobs at 15), we have lots of interesting items in our weekly report.

Those items include FIVE local stations winning DuPont Awards, the retirement of a veteran broadcaster who’s worked for the network, served FOUR large market stations as news director, and also was a GM in several markets, and a new GM in Tampa.

All that…and more…below.

Kneeland Logo
Do you know of someone who deserves the gift of Kneeland?
(Hint: it might be you.)

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications now for their February 28-March 3, 2018 session which will be held in Charlotte, NC. Applications are due Friday January 5, 2018 and are available at kneelandproject.org/apply

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for selected news managers. The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals — Kneeland takes care of the rest.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

The Kneeland Project is an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results.

Click here for more information and to apply. Only 18 journalists will be selected for this program. Start the new year right and apply today!

Veteran broadcaster DICK REINGOLD left his gig as GM for WCTI-TV in New Bern-Greenville-Washington, NC on Friday. Dick has a lengthy and impressive resume, found here on his Linkedin page. Here’s part of the note he sent the staff:

Though I am not from Eastern North Carolina, I will always be grateful for your warm welcome and have relished rolling up my sleeves with you. While I am leaving WCTI, I am not stepping away from either life or business. I love my family very much, but neither “spending more time” with them nor buying an RV loaded with ECU Pirate signage and visiting all 50 states (and the District of Columbia) is immediately ahead. Thank you for letting me serve with you and all of the best of luck.
