Several General Manager or Senior Management moves of note today.

As you know, we’re always pleased to report news directors moving to GM positions, and that’s the case today.

Mitchell

JONATHAN MITCHELL, who’s been a news director in San Jose/San Francisco, Spokane, and Toledo, returns to Raycom Media as GM of the company’s Memphis station, WMC-TV. (He worked for Raycom in both Toledo and Cincinnati.) Jonathan has been working with ExciteM since leaving his ND job at KNTV last summer. Here’s the staff memo from Raycom’s NICK SIMONETTE.

Speaking of Nick, he tells me he’s planning to retire next January after 40 years in our business. He’s currently a Group VP for Raycom, has been a GM at their stations in Charlotte and Baton Rouge, and is a former news director in San Antonio (KENS-TV), Louisville (WHAS-TV), and Baton Rouge WAFB-TV.

Howell

CBS has named JAY HOWELL General Manager of its Sacramento duopoly, KOVR/KMAX-TV. Here’s the official news release. As you’ll learn in that release, Jay most recently as a VP for Media General and he’s been a GM in several markets. Readers of a certain age will remember his father JOHN who was an ND in several markets.

And Meredith has named DALE WOODS GM for WSMV-TV, its NBC affiliate in Nashville. Dale’s been GM of Tribune’s-soon-to-be-Sinclair’s WHO-TV in Des Moines for the past ten years. More from the Des Moines Register.

We have two items of interest for you today.

Lupenski

First, TIFFANI LUPENSKI has left the news director’s job at KGTV, the Scripps owned ABC affiliate in San Diego. She’s been the ND there for the last 2 1/2 years. Tiffani also was an ND for KATU-TV in Portland, as well as the Assistant ND there. She’s been an EP in Seattle and Denver, and worked as a reporter and anchor in Birmingham and Lake Charles, LA, as well as for CNN and for radio stations in both Atlanta and San Antonio.

Also, we’ve learned that FRANK VOLPICELLA is going back to WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, FL, as Managing Director of Content. He was a producer there from 1979-81. You know, of course, that Frank went on to be a news director in Atlanta, Austin, TX, Lexington, and Huntsville, and also worked in Tampa and Atlanta.

We’ll have more on both these stories in our full newsletter this weekend.

Media Moves reports that RUBEN VILLAESCUSA will start tomorrow as the Dayside Executive Producer for Tegna’s KING-TV in Seattle. He retired in 2014 from KTTV in Los Angeles after 23 years there, wrapping up his time there as Assistant News Director.

JOHN PRICE joins WCSC-TV in Charleston, SC, as the station’s Evening Executive Producer. He’s been the 11:00 producer at WJHL-TV in Johnson City, TN.

WBAY-TV filled its open Executive Producer position by promoting ADAM BEHNKE. He’s been the 5:00 producer for this ABC affiliate.

Staying in Wisconsin, DAN PLUTCHAK has joined WKOW-TV in Madison as the Social Media Manager for that ABC affiliate. He was an editor as CSI Media in Janesville.

Greetings:

Another busy week, with FOUR newly named news directors and TWO new openings. Among those new news directors is one who’s been an ND in THREE top 20 markets…and is now in market 108.

Those changes mean our list of open ND jobs drops ever so slightly to 22.

THREE of those open ND positions are featured among our FIVE paid help wanted ads, which features openings in a wide range of markets.

And we have lots of items in Names in the News, including another news manager moving across the street in Denver. We’ll try to answer some of the questions about a new news operation in Arkansas, details about a newsman return got the business after two years away, and a handful of other news manager moves.

New News Director Openings:

WZDX-TV, Huntsville, AL…CJ HOYT is leaving one Nexstar station for another. CJ’s off to Harrisburg, PA, as ND for WHTM-TV. More on that below. He started the first stand-alone news department for this FOX affiliate, which had earlier aired news with other partners.

KNOE-TV, Monroe, LA…BOB WALTERS is headed to Waco, TX as ND for sister Gray TV station KWTX-TV. More on that below, too. Bob’s been the ND for CBS station for almost five years.

While not a new opening, please note the paid help wanted ad below for the ND job at KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver.

Finally, apologies to MIKE LOPEZ. We told you last week that Mike was leaving WHBF-TV in Rock Island, where he’d been the ND, to head to KPRC-TV in Houston. That’s correct, but we had his new job wrong: he’ll be the Executive Planning Editor there.

WHTM-TV, Harrisburg, PA…CJ HOYT returns home to be the next ND for this Nexstar owned ABC affiliate. As you learned above, he’s been the ND for Nexstar’s WZDX-TV in Huntsville. CJ’s also been a news director in Toledo, Evansville, and Lafayette, LA, and has worked in Dallas, Knoxville, Greenville, SC, and Lincoln, NE. CJ’s replacing DAVID JONES who left after five years as ND to become ND for WNYT-TV in Albany, NY.

Eisenman

WLTX-TV, Columbia, SC…JULIE EISENMANN returns to the ND chair as she takes over the Tegna-owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND for sister-Tegna station WXIA-TV in Atlanta. Julie’s been an ND in Savannah and Erie, PA, where she also had reported and anchored, and earlier worked on the assignment desk in Pittsburgh. At WLTX, she’s replacing MARYBETH JACOBY who was the ND there for nine years.

Walters

KWTX-TV, Waco, TX…we told you above that BOB WALTERS was leaving Gray’s KNOE-TV in Monroe, LA, to become ND for this sister Gray station, a CBS affiliate. Bob’s also been an ND in Evansville and Clarksburg, WV, and has worked in Cadillac, MI, Austin, MN, and Carbondale, IL. Bob replaces MIKEL LAUBER who moved to Gray’s KOLN-TV as ND to be closer to family.

Kosowski

KETK/KFXK/KTPN-TV, Tyler, TX…veteran news director ED KOSOWSKI will be the next ND for this Nexstar operation. He’s been with Nexstar for the past few months, filling in at stations in Las Vegas and Monroe, LA. GM WARD HUEY sent this memo to the staff. Many of you know Ed, who’s been an ND in San Francisco, Boston, Denver, and Kansas City and has worked in Washington and for CNBC. In Tyler, Ed replaces NEAL BARTON who has been anchoring and serving as ND. He’ll now concentrate on anchoring.

KDVR GM JOAN BARRETT sent a gracious note to the staff, and KMGH issued this news release. Holly was ND here for about 20 months, has been an ND in Seattle and Philadelphia, has worked at two other Denver stations, and also has worked in Washington, Baltimore, Oklahoma City, and New Orleans. At KMGH, she replaces LINDSAY RADFORD who left in June after just over two years as ND.

WGAL-TV, Lancaster/Harrisburg, PA…this is not a recording, but we also told you in an UPDATE about DAN O’DONNELL’s transfer from this Hearst/NBC affiliate to sister Hearst station KMBC-TV in Kansas City. More on that below. Dan’s been ND here for 15 years and worked at the station for 23.

WRIC-TV, Richmond, VA…okay, the rest of the changes were not reported in UPDATES. KELLY WOODARD has left this Nexstar owned ABC Affiliate after not quite four years as ND. WHBF-TV, Rock Island, IL…MIKE LOPEZ is leaving this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate to become the ~~Managing Editor~~ Executive Planning Editor (corrected 7/17/17) at KPRC-TV in Houston. The move reunites him with KPRC ND DAVID STRICKLAND: they worked together in Norfolk. Mike’s been ND here for almost two years, and has been an ND in Eau Claire, WI. KTMF-TV, Missoula, MT…ANDREA LUTZ is moving to Billings, MT, to anchor a statewide morning newscast. She’s been the ND for this ABC/Fox duopoly owned by Cowles for not quite two years, taking over a most difficult situation following the murder of her predecessor, KALEE SCOLATTI. Andrea has worked on-air as a reporter in Boise and for another Missoula station.

Thomason

Finally, we told you last week that TYLER THOMASON, news director for KMID/KPEJ-TV in Odessa, TX, was leaving for a new job to be announced soon. We can now tell you that Tyler…and his wife, REBECCA JEFFREY, are headed to Little Rock where they’ll work at sister Nexstar operation KARK-TV. The move reunites Tyler with his former GM from Odessa.

Newly Named News Directors:

Doerr

WGCL-TV, Atlanta, GA…it was a busy week for UDPATES, and this move was the fourth of the four we sent out. STEVE DOERR has been named ND for this CBS affiliate owned by Meredith. The Atlanta Journal Constitution has more. According to his (somewhat incomplete) Linkedin page, Steve is currently the Sales Manager for Comcast Spotlight in New York City. He’s been an GM in Dallas and Providence, a news director in Philadelphia and Cleveland, has worked for two different consulting firms, and has held corporate jobs with NBC and Smith Media. He’s also worked in Cincinnati and West Palm Beach. At WGCL, he replaces FRANK VOLPICELLA who left in June. Steve’s the seventh ND here in the past nine years.

KMGH-TV, Denver, CO…we told you everything there is to say about this move in the section above. But for those with short attention spans, HOLLY GAUNTT will be the next ND for this Scripps owned ABC affiliate. If you want more, scroll up. You can do it!

KMBC-TV, Kansas City, MO…we also reported above that DAN O’DONNELL will be the next ND for this Hearst owned ABC affiliate. He’s spent the last 23 years Hearst’s WGAL-TV in Lancaster/Harrisburg, PA, where began on the Assignment Desk, then moved to Assistant ND, then to ND in 2002. At KMBC, he’ll replace SHERRIE BROWN who will leave the station at the end of the month after 9 1/2 years as ND.

GARRY KELLY has left his job as GM for Graham Media’s WSLS-TV in Roanoke. The local newspaper talked with Garry. He’d been GM there about three years and leaves just a few weeks after Graham took over the station. Many of you know Garry, who spent 18 years as an ND in Birmingham. He’s also been an ND in Huntsville, and has worked in Nashville, Denver, and Detroit.
