This week’s report comes to you from New Orleans, host of this year’s EIJ/RTDNA convention. Great to see some of you here, including at the CNN sponsored opening reception tonight.

On to business.

ONE up, ONE down. Or perhaps it should be ONE hired, ONE leaving.

I speak, of course, of news director changes in this week’s newsletter. Those moves means our list of open ND jobs stays at 17. And one of those changes is in the second market.

WTEN-TV, Albany, NY…MATT MILLER is leaving this Media General but soon to be owned by Nexstar ABC affiliate to return home to Cincinnati. He’s taken a job as Talent Acquisition Lead for Scripps which, of course, is headquartered there. Matt will help recruit both producers and on-air. He spent just over a year as ND here. He’s worked at all four Cincinnati stations, and a bunch of other places, too.

Newly Named News Director:

KTTV, Los Angeles, CA…the job has been open since June, but this Fox o-and-o has a new news director. It’s KRIS KNUTSEN, a 30+ year veteran of the market. She’s spent the last five years as Assistant ND for Tribune’s KTLA-TV and spent more than 30 years at KNBC-TV, both on the Assignment Desk and as Managing Editor of the Local News Service. Kris replaces BILL MONDORA who left the station in June after just over two years as ND.

Executive Producer, KCTV, Kansas City, MO:

CLYDE PAYNE, who was GM and once part owner of WBKO-TV in Bowling Green, KY, died yesterday at the age of 80. He had a 42 year career in our business, 27 as GM of WBKO. More details in this obituary. One of his former news directors at WBKO, STEVE CRABTREE, posted this heartfelt tribute to his former boss on his Facebook page.

He was the Assistant ND for WTSP-TV in Tampa before moving to New York. He’s had a variety of other jobs in his career as detailed on his Linkedin page.

ELLIOTT WISER left his job as GM for WTSP-TV in Tampa this week, saying he was ready for the second act of his life. He’d been GM for this Tegna station for three years and previously ran Bay News 9, the area’s all news cable channel. He also was ND for Northwest Cable News in Seattle and was an ND/anchor in Richmond and a producer in Atlanta.

A veteran of the Los Angeles market will be the next news director for Fox o-and-o KTTV.

KRIS KNUTSEN was named to that job today. For the past 5+ years, she’s been the Assistant News Director for Tribune’s KTLA-TV in Los Angeles. And for 30+ years before that, she worked for KNBC-TV as an Assignment Manager and Managing Editor of the Local News Service.

He’s also been an anchor in Austin, MN, and reported in Eau Claire, WI. The station is owned by United Communications Company.

PHIL STURHOLM, a longtime photojournalist and executive producer at Seattle’s KING-TV died Tuesday, August 23 at the age of 80, just three days before he was to host a station reunion. He was considered a legend, according to this article. And this article. And this one, too.

One time news director DAVE LOUGEE (Denver and Washington) will become President and CEO of Tegna following the retirement of GRACIA MARTORE. That will happen after the spinoff announced this week of cars.com into a separate company. This article explains everything (well, at least everything about that move!)

On this anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, you may have read or seen stories about a controversial commercial produced by a Texas mattress store that some said mocked the attacks. KENS-TV (San Antonio) News Director JACK ACOSTA took to the web to explain his decisions on how the station covered the story.

One time KSTP-TV (Minneapolis) Assistant News Director CRAIG CHEATHAM is joining WCPO-TV in Cincinnati as EP and investigative reporter of its I-Team. Craig worked as an investigative reporter in St. Louis before moving into management in Minneapolis.

SYLVIA VILLARREAL is joining KXXV-TV in Waco, TX, as the station’s new executive producer. She’s currently an assignment editor at KTVT-TV in Dallas and has also worked for CBS News and in Bryan, TX. More here.

Obituaries:

Two former news directors died this week.

Both were named Bob.

Both ran stations in Washington, DC.

Both died of cancer.

And both were beloved by their employees.

Long

BOB LONG died in a Washington hospital Monday of metastatic prostate cancer at the age of 71. He was a former ND for WRC-TV in Washington, KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, worked for several other Los Angeles stations, and produced documentaries during a long and varied careers. Memorial services are being planned in both Los Angeles and Washington. More on his life and career in this obituary.

BOB REICHBLUM died Tuesday in Chicago from brain cancer. He was 58. He’d been an ND for WJLA-TV in Washington and WPLG-TV in Miami, but also served as the EP of Good Morning America, and was an executive at CNBC, WebFN, and the Reelz Channel. He also worked in newsrooms in Detroit, Philadelphia, and his native Pittsburgh. More in this interesting story from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. If you’ll permit me a personal note, I knew Bob for more than 30 years. We once shared season hockey tickets for the Detroit Red Wings. And since we reconnected a few years ago, I got an email from him every year on my birthday. I’m sure I’m not the only one who will miss those notes.

BOB LEIDER is returning to Sunbeam Televison, (owner of WHDH-TV in Boston and WSVN-TV in Miami) as executive VP and General Manager. He retired from that job in 2014, but is returning now that his replacement, CHRIS WAYLAND, is leaving to become VP of Group Operations for Tribune Broadcasting.

JAY O’CONNOR, who’s run Cox Media’s KIRO-TV in Seattle since June, 2012, says he will leave that job at the end of the year.

As one new GM heads to Indianapolis, another is leaving.

JAMES (JAMIE) AITKEN has been named GM of Tribune’s WTTV/WXIN-TV the CBS/FOX duopoly in Indianapolis. He’s currently running Tribune’s KDAF-TV in Dallas, once ran Belo’s Texas Cable News in Dallas, was a GM in Spokane and a station manager in Phoenix. It’s a return to Indianapolis for Jamie, who began his career as a Pulliam Fellow at the now-defunct Indianapolis News.

Friday was LES VANN‘s last day as GM of WISH-TV (CW) in Indianapolis. He’s headed to WFTX-TV in Ft. Myers, the Scripps-owned FOX affiliate.

SCOTT THOMAS has been promoted to GM for Raycom media’s KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, MO. He’s been the sales manager for that CBS affiliate.

KTEN-TV in Denison, TX, has a new GM. It’s DAVID TILLERY, a former GM for KETK-TV in Tyler, TX.

Finally…VICTOR HOGSTROM will be the new GM for public station KPTS-TV in Wichita, replacing one time news director MICHELE GORS. More here.

Tuesday, August 30, 2016 UPDATE:

I’m very sorry to tell you that BOB REICHBLUM died last night. Bob was diagnosed with brain cancer last October. Not sure of his age, but he was either 59 or 60. (Updated:  This obituary/funeral information lists his age as 58.)

Reichblum

Bob had a wide ranging career, ranging from network to local news. He was the EP for Good Morning America, VP of Primetime Programming for CNBC, CEO of WebFN, and a Senior VP for Reelz Channel among other positions.

On the local side, Bob served as a news director in Washington (WJLA-TV) and Miami (WPLG-TV), was an EP in Detroit and Pittsburgh, and worked as a producer in Philadelphia. More on his Linkedin page.

He’s survived by his wife DIANE and two children, JUSTIN and RACHEL.

The funeral is tomorrow at 10:00 at Chicago Jewish Funerals in Skokie, followed by burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie. The family will sit shiva from tomorrow afternoon until Tuesday.

And we have a little more information on the death of longtime news director BOB LONG who died yesterday in a Washington hospital after a long battle with brain cancer. One of his former stations, KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, aired this tribute.

If/when I learn of funeral arrangements for Bob, I’ll post the information on my website.

It’s my sad duty to report that BOB LONG died today in a Washington hospital after a long fight with bone cancer.

Long

Bob was a legendary news director who retired in 2009 after six years as ND for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. He also served as ND for NBC’s WRC-TV in Washington, worked for several other Los Angeles stations, and also produced documentaries.

You will get a sense of the man as you enjoy this interview with Bob, conducted when he retired from KNBC. He was also known for the uniqueness of his memos, as remembered by WRC anchor JIM VANCE in this note today to his co-workers.

I don’t have funeral arrangements yet, nor Bob’s age. I’ll add them to this website when I do, and will include them in the next emailed edition of the full newsletter.

One other note: It was announced late today that LES VANN is headed to Scripps’ WFTX-TV (FOX) in Ft. Myers as General Manager. We told you last week that Les was leaving WISH-TV in Indianapolis after two years as GM.

At KGO, for at least part of that time, her GM was VALARI STAAB, now President of the NBC o-and-o stations. You’re smart: you connect the dots. Stephanie replaces JONATHAN MITCHELL who left in July after more than six years as ND.

KAKW-TV, Austin, TX…this Univision station has named ISMAEL MARTINEZ as news director. Again! He worked at KAKW from 2003 until 2014 in a variety of roles, including news director, before moving to Univision’s San Antonio station, KWEX-TV, as News and Operations Supervisor. He replaces MIGUEL GAYTAN who was named ND of Telemundo’s KTAZ-TV in Phoenix in June.

WPTA/WISE-TV, Ft. Wayne, IN…JONATHAN SHELLEY joins this Quincy Media owned duopoly as news director. We have the news release here. Until last March, he spent nine years as the ND for WDSU-TV in New Orleans. He’s also worked in Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Ft. Myers. Jonathan replaces ALAN WAGMEISTER who left the station last month (shortly after Quincy took over) after one year as ND.

WWTV/WWUP-TV, Cadillac/Traverse City, MI…SEAN MAHON returns to this CBS affiliate as news director. He was the station’s chief photographer from 1996-2000 before working for three Detroit stations as a photographer. WAGA-TV (Atlanta’s FOX o-and-o) has hired longtime Atlanta newsman PHIL HUMES as morning EP. Here’s the note from VP/News MIKE McCLAIN:

Please join me in welcoming Phil Humes to FOX 5 Atlanta. Phil joins our team Monday as an Executive Producer for Good Day Atlanta.

Many of you know Phil from his decades of work at WXIA. Phil most recently served as Manager of News Operations and Planning at 11 Alive. He also worked as a producer and an Executive Producer during his tenure there.

Phil is a graduate of the University of Michigan. He was awarded the prestigious NATAS Silver Circle award in 2014 for his outstanding work in television.

Phil is very excited about joining our team. Please take a moment to welcome him to FOX 5 Atlanta.

CHRIS PETTIGREW joins Denver’s KMGH-TV as Executive Producer. He spent the last six years at CNN. He’s also worked at the now-closed Pentagon Channel, in Washington, and in Charlottesville, VA.

WDSU-TV in New Orleans has hired MARK PARRICK as Assistant ND. He’d been an EP for WDAF-TV in Kansas City, and has also worked in Tampa, Peoria, and the Quad Cities.

PATSY LORIS has been promoted to Executive VP/News and Executive News Director for Univision.

Finally, former Tucson News Director BOB RICHARDSON was arrested on prostitution related charges in Chandler, AZ earlier this. Bob’s also worked in Houston, Nashville, San Antonio and Albuquerque. We told you earlier that WISH-TV General Manager LES VANN is leaving this Media General-soon-to-be-Nexstar CW affiliate for a job to be announced later. Well, it ain’t later, yet, but we’ll have that news for you soon. JOE ABOUZEID, GM of sister station WDTN-TV in Dayton (and, like Les, a former news director) will be the interim GM. The Indianapolis Business Journal looks at what’s happened to WISH since the loss of its CBS affiliation almost two years ago.
