Greetings:

You’ll meet THREE new news directors in this week’s report.

And just ONE new opening for the second week in a row, so our count of open ND jobs drops and now stands at 23.

We have news ads for EP openings in two different markets, as well as ads for a VP/News job for Scripps, an ND opening in Alabama, and two management openings in Houston.

Two obituaries this week, for the mother of a veteran ND and a former GM in Louisville, and a handful of news managers on the move.

New News Director Openings:

He comes from print: Kevin was the Night City Editor at the Detroit Free Press before moving to TV. Dana spent 17 years here, 14 of them as news director.

Perret

KCTV, Kansas City, MO…we were first to tell you that LARRY PERRET has been named ND for this Meredith owned CBS affiliate. He’s also worked in Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, San Francisco, Denver, Greensboro, NC, and Colorado Springs. Larry also spent six years as a consultant for Magid. He replaces BLAISE LABBE who left in July to reutrn to Texas as ND for Sinclair’s duopoly in San Antonio, WOAI/KABB-TV. Blaise was ND here for three years.

WTAJ-TV, Altoona, PA…SCOTT LEVY has been named ND for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. We told you a few weeks ago that he was leaving Nexstar’s WETM-TV in Elmira, NY, for a job to be named later. He replaces JOHN MECHAM who was ND here for just over a year.

October 5, 2013

Wednesday, October 9, 2013 UPDATE:

Greetings:

We have TWO notable news director hires to share with you today, one involving a veteran newsman who many of you know.

Perret

LARRY PERRET has been named ND for Meredith’s KCTV (CBS) in Kansas City. He most recently was ND at KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, a job he left in February after an ownership change at that ABC affiliate. Larry’s also been an ND in Los Angeles and St. Louis, has worked for five stations in Los Angeles, as well as in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Denver, Greensboro, NC, and Colorado Springs. He also worked as a consultant for Magid.  At KCTV, he replaces BLAISE LABBE who left the station in July to be news director for Sinclair’s San Antonio duopoly, WOAI/KABB-TV.

Roseborough

WJBK-TV in Detroit wasted little time in filling its news director opening, promoting KEVIN ROSEBOROUGH to replace DANA HAHN. He’s been the Assistant News Director there since 2006, and first joined the FOX o-and-o as Managing Editor in 2004. Kevin’s background is in print, having worked at the Detroit Free Press as night city editor before joining WJBK. Dana, as you know, left Detroit for Washington to become ND for another FOX o-and-o, WTTG-TV.

We’ll have more on all the changes in our full newsletter later this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

There are FOUR ‘new’ news directors in this week’s report. They’ve all been NDs before, though, so just how ‘new’ can they be? 🙂

And just ONE new opening, so our count of open ND jobs drops to 24.

Ever dreamed of being a VP/News for a major broadcasting company? We have that very opportunity in one of our THREE new paid ads this week. And we have ads for TWO open ND jobs, along with FOUR ads for management positions across the country.

Last week we introduced you to a new product aimed to help you with your breaking news coverage.  Unfortunately, a computer gremlin (on my end) prevented you from linking to the site to learn more about their services.  It works now, and I encourage you to click on the ad just below to learn more.

Our Names in the News segment has a variety of interesting items, including an Ohio news director lucky to be alive after a household accident, big changes for veteran broadcasters THERESE DUKE and STEVE CHARLIER, the complete list of national EMMY award winners, and a number of GM changes, including one in a top 20 market.

New News Director Opening:

WALA/WFNA-TV, Mobile, AL...After nine years, BOB CASHEN is leaving this LIN Media owned station for a new job which is detailed below. Learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below!

Newly Named News Directors:

Cashen

WSET-TV, Lynchburg/Roanoke, VA…longtime News Director BOB CASHEN will be the next ND for this now-owned-by-Albritton-but-being-bought-by-Sinclair ABC affiliate. As noted above, Bob’s currently the ND at WALA-TV in Mobile. It’s a return to Virginia, a state Bob tells me he’s always loved, dating from his time as an ND in Norfolk. He’s also been an ND in Shreveport, and Waterloo, IA, and has worked in San Antonio and Oklahoma City. At WSET, he replaces BILL FOY who left earlier this summer after seven years as ND for a PR job with the Virginia Tech.

KGAN/KFXA-TV, Cedar Rapids, IA…BECKY LUTGEN GARDNER joins this Sinclair owned duopoly as ND. She’s a former ND for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids before leaving that job a few years ago to work at a non-profit. He’s also been an ND in Lansing, MI, and worked in Green Bay. She replaces ROD JACKSON who left the station in September after 14 months as ND. By my count, Becky becomes the sixth ND in seven years here.

Schieferstein

WEEK/WHOI/WAOE-TV, Peoria, IL…congratulations to GREG SCHIEFERSTEIN who returns to the ND chair for these Granite operated stations. Greg’s spent the last year as an EP for WTVG-TV in Toledo. He’s been a ND at WAGT-TV in Augusta, GA, KPAX-TV in Missoula, MT and KPVI-TV in Pocatello, ID. He’s also worked in Seattle and Rockford, IL. In Peoria, Greg replaces DON SHAFER who left in August to become ND for XETV in San Diego.

Burch

KBTX, Bryan/College Station, TX…JAMIE BURCH returns to this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate as news director. Earlier in his career he was a producer at KBTX. He’s spent the last year as ND for another Gray station, WJHG-TV, the NBC affiliate in Panama City, FL. For five years, he was an EP for WKRG-TV in Mobile, and has also worked in Atlanta, and Dallas. At KBTX, he replaces MIKE GEORGE who left the station last month after five years as ND.

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Roach

WXIX-TV (Cincinnati/FOX) News Director KEVIN ROACH says he’s lucky to be alive. A few weeks ago, he fell off a ladder at his new house. Kevin explains in this email sent last Sunday:

I suffered a brain hemorrhage and pulmonary emboli in both lungs. I broke nine ribs and crushed a vertebrae. I am lucky to be alive. Tomorrow (Monday, 9/30/13) I’m having a procedure called Vertebroplasty to shore up the vertebrae. I’m slowly working my way back to work. I want to thank those who’ve sent well wishes and offer a little advice to fellow news directors – stay off ladders!

Late Friday night, Kevin advises that the Monday surgery went well, so that’s good news.

If you want to send him a kind note, his email is kroach@fox19.com. Kevin’s worked in Dayton, Cincinnati, Hartford, Boston, for LexisNexis, Internet Broadcasting, and the AP.

Duke

Today was THERESE DUKE‘s last day at CBS News. She’s going home to New Orleans where her husband JOE returned when he left CBS a few years ago. They met there when they worked at WWL-TV. Therese has been splitting time between New York, New Orleans, and airports all over the country in her role as Senior Director of Broadcast Marketing for CBS News. That unit’s being moved under CBS Newspath. She’s continue to consult until the end of the year, so you can ask her for New Orleans restaurant recommendations via her CBS email address, duket@cbsnews.com

Charlier

STEVE CHARLIER has left Tribune Broadcasting to start his own multi-platform media company. Steve tells me he has a few development projects that he’s working on, is doing some light consulting, and is still working with Tribune on a few projects. He’s a former ND for CBS stations in Sacramento and Salt Lake City.  You can wish him well at: steve.charlier5@gmail.com

Congratulations to WBZ-TV in Boston and KING-TV in Seattle, the only two local stations to be honored with National Emmy Awards. WBZ won for its coverage of the Newtown tragedy, while KING received its award for investigative reporting. CBS won the most awards, 12. You can see the complete list of awards here.

GM NOTES:

BERT MEDINA, who spent 14 years in a variety of roles at WSVN-TV in Miami, has been named General Manager of Post-Newsweek’s WPLG-TV in Miami. More here.

JIM HIMES has been promoted to GM of WGHP-TV in Greensboro, NC. He’s been the sales manager for sister station WREG-TV in Memphis.

September 28, 2013

Greetings:

THREE new openings, including one created by a health-caused retirement of a 30 year news director, lead this week’s report. And we have THREE new news directors to share, leaving our count of open ND jobs at 27.

We have a paid ad for ONE of those newly open ND jobs, along with SIX ads for management positions in a wide variety of markets.

And we welcome a new advertiser, NowMachine, which promises to help you with breaking news coverage by automatically monitoring social media and police scanners alerting you to breaking news–before it’s even been reported. Check out their ad below.

We have THREE obituaries, including one of a longtime Magid employee who veteran NDs might remember.

And in Names in the News, a veteran New York newsman is back in a newsroom, several news managers on the move, the retirement of a VP/Television for a large group, and several GM moves within Tribune.

All that, and more, as you read on.

New News Director Openings:

Dye

WXYZ-TV, Detroit, MI…another week, another Detroit news director vacancy. We told you Tuesday that TIM DYE is leaving this Scripps’ owned ABC affiliate after 3+ years as ND to return to Grand Rapids and a PR job there. Tim spent 12 years as ND for WXMI-TV (FOX) in Grand Rapids before taking the WXYZ job, but his family stayed behind and he’s been commuting. He’s also worked for WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids (twice, one when I hired him when I was the ND there), and in Saginaw. He’s joining TruscottRossman, a strategic communications firm as VP. Here’s the firm’s news release on his hire. Learn more about this opening in the paid ad below.

Boyle

KSAT-TV, San Antonio, TX…I’m sorry to report that longtime ND JIM BOYLE has retired for health reasons and is currently recovering from surgery. Jim spent almost 30 years as ND for this Post-Newsweek owned ABC affiliate, a remarkable tenure for this size market. Here’s part of a statement the station sent me after I asked:

We ask for thoughts and prayers for Jim and his family and we appreciate your respect of our privacy as we all deal with Jim’s recovery. There will be no further comment at this time as we at KSAT12 are focused on helping Jim get well, while we continue serving the community that Jim so loves.

Earlier in his career he worked in Baltimore and San Diego.

KGAN/KFXA-TV, Cedar Rapids, IA…ROD JACKSON has left this Sinclair owned duopoly after 14 months as ND. He first joined KGAN as Managing Editor in 2011, spent five months as interim ND before being promoted in July, 2012. Rod spent 13 years as a producer for ABC’s NewsOne in Los Angeles. He’s also worked in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Billings, MT. His replacement will be the fifth ND in just over seven years.

Newly Named News Directors:

Killian

KSNW-TV, Wichita, KS…DENISE KILLIAN has been named ND for this LIN Media NBC affiliate. She’s the Interim ND for KDAF-TV, the CW affiliate in her hometown of Dallas, where she’s worked for the last year and a half. Denise was ND for KWQC-TV in the Quad Cities, worked in Dallas earlier in her career, and has also worked in Nashville (twice), Corpus Christi, and Temple, TX. She replaces JASON KRAVARIK who left the station in January, 2012 (that is NOT a typo). (The station did change owners from New Vision to LIN Media during that time.)

Sloan

WTOV-TV, Steubenville, OHDAN SLOAN, who’s been sports director of this NBC affiliate for 23 years, has been promoted to News Director. He replaces MIKE BOTHWELL who was promoted earlier this month to be the Assistant News Director of sister-Sinclair station WHP-TV in Harrisburg, PA. (Sinclair bought this station from Cox earlier this year.)

WBKB-TV, Alpena, MI…VALENA JONES has been promoted to News Director here.

Moats

LINDA MOATS, who worked in the Talent Placement Department at the Frank N. Magid Associates consulting firm for more than 20 years, died last Sunday (9/22/13) after a brief illness. She was 66, and is survived by her husband of 45 years and two children. Linda retired from Magid ten years ago. BARB FRYE, Magid’s longtime VP of Talent Recruitment, tells me Linda was always a pro with clients, talent, and co-workers. You can read more on Linda by clicking here. A note of condolence can be sent to her husband Chuck via email: fulltimers01@aol.com

Thornton

LEE THORNTON, the first African American woman to be assigned to a network (CBS) White House beat, died September 25th at the age of 71 of pancreatic cancer. She also worked at CNN, anchored the weekend morning edition of All Things Considered, and taught journalism at the University of Maryland. She also served as interim dean for the College of Journalism at Maryland, which reports on her passing and career in this article.

Dawson

RICK DAWSON, who was once the ND for WFYI-TV, the PBS station in Indianapolis, died Monday at the age of 51. He was a longtime reporter and anchor for WISH-TV, the CBS station in Indianapolis, and also worked in Ft. Wayne. He’s survived by his wife, SHANNON, a former producer for WISH-TV, and three children.

Situations Wanted:

We offer a free situations wanted ad to news managers who are out of work and looking for a new opportunity. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Coscia

JOE COSCIA, who’s worked in several New York newsrooms, is joining another one. He’s been hired at WPIX-TV as EP for Election coverage. Joe’s been a news director in Pittsburgh, West Palm Beach, Albany, NY, and Providence, and also worked for ABC News. For the past five years he’s worked on a number of syndication projects, including ProPixTV and TestDriveNow.

WPIX has also hired ZEV SHALEV as EP of its morning news. He’s been working at the Fuse Network.

Washington

RICHARD WASHINGTON III moves just a few miles north to become the new Nightside EP for WBAL-TV, the Hearst owned NBC station in Baltimore. He had been the 5:00 producer for Fox’s WTTG-TV in Washington, and has worked in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Richmond.

DOUG DeYOUNG, who spent ten years as the ND for WPBN/WTOM-TV in Traverse City before leaving in 2009 to work for the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce, has a new job. He’s now Public Affairs Area Manager for Consumers Energy. During his TV days, he also worked in Grand Rapids (where we worked together) and in Lansing.

Oops. Last week I told you ALEXIS MARSHALL was leaving WIVB-TV in Buffalo (that was right) to go to Tampa as EP for WFLA-TV in Tampa (that wasn’t so right). Alexis is actually going to Scripps’ WFTS-TV in Tampa. Apologies.

GM NOTES:

SCOTT BLUMENTHAL is retiring as Executive VP/Television for LIN Media. He’s been with the company for more than 30 years, starting as a sales manager in Indianapolis. (We worked together briefly when he was the GM for WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, MI.) More in this press release from the company.

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 UPDATE:

Dye

The Detroit market, which hadn’t had an ND opening in more than three years, now has TWO with today’s resignation of TIM DYE as ND for Scripps’ WXYZ-TV.

He’s returning to Grand Rapids as Vice President of TruscottRossman, a major Michigan strategic communications firm. Tim’s family has remained in Grand Rapids (where he spent 12 years as ND for WXMI-TV, the FOX affiliate there) for the 3 1/2 years he’s been ND at WXYZ.

Tim also worked at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, where (full disclosure) I hired him as EP when I was the news director there. He’s also worked in Saginaw.

His departure follows last week’s promotion of WJBK-TV News Director DANA HAHN to be ND of sister FOX o-and-o WTTG-TV in Washington.

We’ll have more on all the latest changes in our full newsletter later this week.

**** *****  ****

Greetings:

THREE new ND openings in this week’s report, ONE newly named ND, and lots of news about general managers.

Those changes leave our list of open ND jobs at 26.

KBTX-TV, Bryan, TX…this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate is looking for a new ND. MIKE GEORGE has been the ND there since 2008.

Newly Named News Director:

Hahn

WTTG-TV, Washington, DC…as mentioned above, longtime WJBK-TV (Detroit) News Director DANA HAHN is joining this FOX o-and-o as news director. Dana spent 17 years at WJBK, the last 12 as news director. I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.
