Wednesday, September 18, 2013 UPDATE:

A promotion within the Fox o-and-o group fills one opening and creates another.

Hahn

DANA HAHN, the longtime ND for Fox’s WJBK-TV in Detroit, heads to Washington to take over the news department at WTTG-TV. Dana’s been the ND in Detroit for more than 12 years and worked at the station for 17 years. She’s also worked in Chicago and South Bend. At WTTG, she replaces PHIL METLIN who announced his retirement last month and left the station the same day.

More on this move and all the latest movement in our full report later this week.

**** ***** ****
Greetings:

Just ONE new ND opening this week and just ONE new ND hire, so our list of open ND jobs remains at 24.

We have ads for TWO of those positions, and a tip of the fedora to new KSNW-TV GM ERIK SCHRADER for coming up with an ad that is unusual and clever. Takes a former ND to be creative, perhaps.

In Names in the News, Nielsen has released the new market ratings. We’ll give you a link so you can check it out. We’ll also tell you which former large market GM just joined the board of a Nielsen competitor, as well as fill you in on several news management changes.

All that and more as you read on:

New News Director Openings:

KSNW-TV, Wichita, KS…this is not a new opening (in fact, it’s been open for 18 months) but as we noted above, a new GM has relaunched the search with a clever ad you can see below.

WTXL-TV, Tallahassee, FL…this ABC affiliate has a posting for a new news director on its website. My records show LA’QUNTA DIXON had been the ND there since June, 2012.

Newly Named News Director:

Blanton

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…BROOKS BLANTON returns to Michigan as the next ND for this Tribune owned FOX affiliate. He’s been a producer for Fox News Channel based in Atlanta, but began his career in Lansing, MI. He’s also worked in Tucson and for two different stations in Phoenix. Brooks replaces KERRI CAVANAUGH who left in May after three years to become ND for sister-Tribune-Fox affiliate WXIN-TV here in Indianapolis.

Paid Help Wanted Ads:

I’ll run it for one week. I don’t represent or endorse those listed, but merely trying to help.

Palermo

This week, meet GREGG PALERMO:

After almost three years with Patch.com, where I launched a hyperlocal news site in one community and added responsibility for another while also guiding coverage of sports and politics in Missouri, I’m in search of new opportunities, effective next month.

I’m looking to stay in St. Louis in a role which takes advantage of nearly 20 years in the news business from reporting to management, even if it means getting out of the news business. I know what it’s like to build and mold substantial long-form content, to respond to breaking news, while juggling multiple projects and priorities.

I’m an effective social media user in building engagement and developing story leads. While I’m most interested in a new full-time opportunity, I’m open to exploring freelance assignments. You can review my background on LinkedIn and reach me at gapalermo1@yahoo.com

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Eikel

AMBER EIKEL moves within Cox to become the new Managing Editor for KTVU-TV in San Francisco/Oakland. She has been an EP for sister Cox-station KIRO-TV in Seattle. Amber’s also worked in Milwaukee, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs, CA.

Two management hires at WGCL-TV in Atlanta. JENNIFER WIGGINS is the new morning EP. She had been working at HLN. And SANDEE LaMOTTE is the new Special Projects EP, joining this CBS affiliate from WebMD.

Congratulations to MIKE CURTIS who was featured in our Situations Wanted feature several months ago. Mike tells me he’s landed as the Assistant ND for WHBQ-TV in Memphis. It’s a return to Memphis for Mike, who worked at WREG-TV there for four years earlier in his career. He’s also worked in Philadelphia, Evansville. and Greenville, MS.

GM Note: DAVE BOYLAN, whose retirement as GM from WPLG-TV in Miami was reported here a few weeks ago, has joined the Board of Directors of Rentrak. (Not familiar with Rentrak? Click here.) MIKE MALONE of Broadcasting and Cable (who I owe a return phone call, sorry, Mike!) reports Boylan will be replaced as head of the ABC affiliates board by old friend MIKE DEVLIN, a one-time ND who’s now GM for WFAA-TV in Dallas.

Nielsen released its latest list of market rankings.  Click here to check ’em out.

Finally, apologies to newly promoted KGET-TV News Director MIKE TRIHEY, who I renamed John in a mention of his promotion and the retirement of JOHN PILIOS last week.

September 7, 2013

Greetings:

We have TWO new ND openings in this week’s report. To my knowledge, there have been NO new news directors hired this week.

Our list of open ND jobs jumps to 24.

Careful readers (or those without a life) may remember that last week we had 20 openings, so the logical question is how does 20 + 2 equal 24? That’s because one of the ‘new ND’ postings we had last week was wrong. I explain that below.

We do have paid ads for THREE of those open ND jobs, one an anchor/ND position. And there are ads for news management openings in FOUR markets.

In Names in the News, former ND JOHN LANSING retires as President of Scripps Networks, a former corporate ND for Nexstar joins Sinclair in a similar role, and we’ll offer a link to a Washington Post article on Sinclair’s expansion plans.

All that and more as you read on:

New News Director Openings:

Neerman

WHAS-TV, Louisville, KY…MARK NEERMAN has left this Belo-owned ABC affiliate after almost four years as ND. He tells me he’s ready for the next adventure and will see how far his frequent flier miles will take him. Mark’s also been a news director in Las Vegas and Richmond, and has worked in San Francisco, Portland, OR, Miami, and Columbia, MO.

WETM-TV, Elmira, NY…SCOTT LEVY is leaving this Nexstar owned station for a new job that will be announced soon…perhaps as early as next week. He’s been the ND here for almost a year, and before that has worked at News 12 Bronx/Brooklyn, and in Dallas, Memphis, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa (twice).

WUTR/WFXV/WPNY-TV, Utica, NY…this search is for an Anchor AND News Director. It’s not a new opening but the ad is re-running below and I wanted to call your attention to it.

And we’ve added both WHP-TV in Harrisburg, PA, and WTOV-TV in Steubenville, OH, to the list of open ND jobs. We erroneously told you last week that MIKE BOTHWELL had been named ND at WHP. He’s actually the Assistant ND there. His departure opened up the ND job at WTOV. Both stations are owned by Sinclair.

Newly Named News Directors:

None, to my knowledge. We rely heavily on tips from your readers so please pass along anything you may know that I haven’t reported. Email is: rick@rickgevers.com

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Lansing

Old friend JOHN LANSING is retiring as President of Scripps Networks, a job he’s held for the past nine years. John began his career as a news photographer (if memory serves, in Paducah). He later worked as a photographer in Louisville, and took his first ND job in Kalamazoo. He later was an ND in Chicago, Minneapolis, and (for one month) in St. Louis. He was a station manager in Detroit and a GM for Scripps in Cleveland before becoming Senior VP of the Broadcast Division, a job he held until moving to the Scripps Network position. You can read more by clicking here.

CHRIS MANSON has joined Sinclair Broadcasting as Corporate News Director for the company’s Chesapeake stations. Chris most recently was ND at KSEE-TV in Fresno before Nexstar bought the station, and consolidated the newsroom with its KGPE-TV there, leaving Chris out of a job. He’s a former Corporate ND for Nexstar and also was an ND in Peoria.

JOHN PILIOS‘s retirement as ND of KGET-TV in Bakersfield began last Wednesday. We told you in July that John was retiring and would be replaced by MIKE TRIHEY. The station paid tribute to John in this story from the station’s website.

Finally, you might be interested in this Washington Post article about Sinclair Broadcasting’s expansion and the company’s plan to launch a national channel.

Greetings:

It’s always good to see some of you at the annual RTDNA conference.

It would have been nicer to see more of you.

While attendance was up to about 1,600 registrants, apparently only 160 of those were RTDNA members. (SPJ and NAHJ members made up the bulk of the registrants.) The exhibit floor was much larger than in the past two years, but much of that can be attributed to companies recruiting NAHJ members. I’m told that NAHJ will return to a stand-alone conference next year.

Many of you are currently in budget planning. I hope you can find a way to include travel to next year’s conference in Nashville.

On to our normal report, delayed this holiday weekend by travel.

(And updated on Tuesday morning to reflect that TIM BOTHWELL is the Assistant ND at WHP-TV, not the ND as I’d been led to believe by an email forwarded to me.  Apologies to all involved.)

A robust SIX FIVE newly  named NDs headline this week’s report, with TWO THREE new openings, one of them created by the “I’m retiring today, goodbye.” departure of a Washington, DC, news director. Those moves drop our list of open ND jobs to 22.

You can learn more about one of those openings in a paid ad below. And you’ll find ads for several management openings and even an ad for a producer job in a top ten market.

In Names in the News, a 17 year CNN Newssource sales executive (and former ND) is retiring. We also have details on an ND who stepped down three weeks ago to become a roving features reporter for his station, an arrangement that only lasted a few weeks. And we have updates on several news management changes.

New News Director Openings:

WTTG-TV, Washington, DC…we first reported PHIL METLIN’s departure from this FOX o-and-o earlier this week. Phil announced his retirement from the station on Thursday and left the same day. Phil also worked in Miami.

WROC-TV, Rochester, NY…BRYAN QUEEN is leaving this Nexstar owned CBS station to be the next ND at WIS-TV in Columbia, SC. More on that below.

WTOV-TV, Steubenville, OH…MIKE BOTHWELL moves within Sinclair to become the Assistant ND at WHP-TV in Harrisburg   He’s been the ND here for almost two years, and previously has worked in Pittsburgh (twice), Philadelphia, Palm Desert, CA, and as an ND in Bend, OR.

He replaces CARLTON HOUSTON who left earlier this summer after six years as ND to take the same job at KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City.

Queen

WIS-TV, Columbia, SC…as reported above, BRYAN QUEEN will be the next ND for this Raycom Media-owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the ND at WROC-TV in Rochester, NY, for almost two years. It’s a return to the Carolinas for Bryan, who’s worked as a news manager for News 14 Carolina, at NBC News Channel in Charlotte, and for WXII-TV in Winston-Salem. He’s also worked as an MSNBC planning producer in New York. MSNBC is where his predecessor went: RASHIDA JONES is now the EP for the Chris Jansing show. She was ND at WIS for two years.

Greene

WFFF/WVNY-TV, Burlington, Vt/Plattsburgh, NY…JOLENE REILLY GREENE returns to the Northeast as ND for this newly-acquired-by-Nexstar FOX/ABC duopoly. Metlin

Longtime FOX o-and-o News Director PHIL METLIN announced his retirement from WTTG-TV today, effective immediately. An email to him seeking more details was returned with this message:

I have retired from my position as News Director here at WTTG effective August 29, 2013. If you need to contact our newsroom, please call 202-895-3002. Thank you.

Phil’s been the ND in Washington since early 2008. He’d earlier held the same job at Fox owned stations in Philadelphia (WTXF-TV) and Tampa (WTVT-TV).

It’s been a busy week with several new NDs to share with you. We’ll have that in our full report tomorrow.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

FOUR new news directors in this week’s report, though only one is new to that job. And, to the best of my knowledge, only ONE new opening, leaving our always unofficial count of open ND jobs at 23.

This week, I’m pleased to welcome AccuWeather as an advertiser. Check out their ad below and visit their booth at this week’s RTDNA conference, along with the ad and the convention booth of another advertiser, WeatherMetrics.

Speaking of the conference, the Missouri Mafia will gather for its annual RTDNA get-together on Sunday from 6:00-8:00 in the Anaheim Marriott Hotel’s Degrees Wine and Patio Bar. All are welcome to stop by, and broadcast department chair KENT COLLINS promises a special gift for those who’ve attended the University of Missouri.  I hope to see you there.

In Names in the News…and Other Stuff…more details about BOB SULLIVAN’s new job, a new company started by another former Phoenix ND, some news management moves, and several new GM notes. And we have a link to a story about the FAA grounding drone programs at two Universities.

All that and more below!

New News Director Opening:

KPHO-TV, Phoenix, AZ…in one of several stories we reported to you earlier this week, MICHELLE DONALDSON is leaving this Meredith owned CBS affiliate to return to Albuquerque. More on that below. Michelle’s been the ND here for five years.

Newly Named News Directors:

KMSP/WFTC-TV, Minneapolis, MN…MARIAN DAVEY becomes a news director for the first time as she is promoted at this FOX-owned duopoly. She’s been the assistant ND there for ten years, and has served as the interim ND since BILL DALLMAN left in June to become ND for Fox Sports 1. Marian first joined the station in 2002 as managing editor. She also spent 14 years at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, starting as an intern and rising to managing editor.

Chapuis

KTXL-TV, Sacramento, CA…ED CHAPUIS returns to Sacramento and an ND job as he joins this Tribune owned FOX affiliate. Ed’s worked for KCRA-TV in Sacramento for eleven years over two stints, including as ND from 1997-2002. From 2003 until earlier this year he was ND for KTVU-TV in San Francisco/Oakland. Ed’s also been an ND in Las Vegas and worked in Chicago. He replaces BRANDON MERCER who left in June after five years as ND.

Carl

WTNH-TV, Hartford/New Haven, CT…another former news director returns to the job as AL CARL has been promoted to ND for this LIN Media owned ABC affiliate. He’s been the Managing Editor here for the past 18 months. Al’s a former ND in Omaha, Savannah, and for two stations in Huntsville. He’s also worked for two stations in Kansas City.

Schrader

Al’s former boss at WTNH, ERIK SCHRADER, has also been promoted. He’s already on the job as general manager of LIN’s newly acquired KSNW-TV, the NBC affiliate in Wichita. Erik was ND at WTNH for two years. He has a varied background: ND in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and for stations in Joplin and Springfield, MO, and Savannah, GA. He’s also worked in production, as a reporter, and as a sports director.

KOB-TV, Albuquerque, NM…as teased above, MICHELLE DONALDSON is returning to Albuquerque to be the next ND for this Hubbard-owned NBC affiliate. She’s spent the last five years as ND for KPHO-TV in Phoenix but spent eight years (five as ND) at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque. Here’s the KOB story on her hire. Michelle has also worked in Detroit, where she began her career in radio.

Names in the News…and other stuff:

Sullivan

We told you earlier about BOB SULLIVAN‘s promotion to VP/Programming for Scripps. Here’s the company’s news release. Bob’s been VP/Content since 2010, working on new, first run program development while still working with stations. Scripps will hire a new VP of News, and that person will then hire a second Director of News Strategies. Bob’s a former GM in Washington, and has worked in Phoenix (two stations) Jacksonville, FL, Denver, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, and Madison, WI, and ran the Arizona Super Bowl Committee for three years.

Another former Scripps/Phoenix ND, JOE HENGEMUEHLER, wrote this week to let me know that he’s going to start a monthly newsletter tied to his new business, Joe Hengemuehler Consulting. Joe’s doing focus group research for clients, few of which are TV stations. Learn more about his business by checking out his website by clicking here.

MATT PAPAYCIK returns to his first TV station as the new nightside EP for WINK-TV in Ft. Myers. He’s been a producer for WKMG-TV in Orlando for the past 2 1/2 years, but began his career as an A.P. at WINK, eventually rising to 11:00 producer.

After nine years as a producer at WTHR-TV in Indianapolis, DUANE BECKER moves into management as an EP for WCSH-TV in Portland, ME. The move gets Duane closer to his family on the East Coast.

The FAA has grounded drone camera efforts at both the University of Missouri and Nebraska Univeristy.

GM NOTES:

We told you above of ERIK SCHRADER‘s appointment to GM at KSNW-TV in Wichita.

But that’s not the only GM move this week. DAVE BOYLAN announced he’s stepping down as GM of WPLG-TV in Miami after ten years. Dave told the staff he’s taking a unique position within the industry that he couldn’t yet reveal. He’s a former GM at FOX owned stations in Los Angeles, Tampa, and Greensboro, and has also worked in Cleveland and Chicago.

PAUL RENNIE returns to Indianapolis as GM of Tribune’s WXIN/WTTV. He’s been the General Sales Manager for Tribune’s KCPQ-TV in Seattle, but went to that job from a similar position at WRTV in Indianapolis.
