August 17, 2013

Tuesday, August 20, 2013 UPDATE:

A surprising development from Phoenix prompts an unusual third consecutive day for an UPDATE.

MICHELLE DONALDSON, who’s been the ND at KPHO-TV (a CBS affiliate owned by Meredith) for the past five years, is leaving the station to return to Albuquerque.

She’s been named ND for Hubbard’s KOB-TV, the NBC affiliate there, replacing JOHN MASON who resigned for family reasons in June after six months as news director. Michelle spent eight years at KRQE-TV in Albuquerque before moving to KPHO in 2008.

She’s also worked in Detroit, where she began her career in radio.

It’s been a busy week, which means a full newsletter sometime this weekend.

Tuesday, August 20, 2013 UPDATE:

A big management promotion at Scripps and bigger/better jobs for two veteran newsmen are featured in this UPDATE.

Sullivan

BOB SULLIVAN, who’s been VP of Content for Scripps since 2010, has been promoted to Vice President of Programming for the company. He’s been leading the company’s efforts in new, first run program development while working with its local stations. The company will hire a new VP of News, and that person will then hire a new Director of News Strategies, a spot that opened up when JEFF BROGAN was named GM of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. Bob’s been a GM in Washington, and has worked in Phoenix (two stations) Jacksonville, FL, Denver, Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, and Madison, WI.

Schrader

In other news, ERIK SCHRADER, who’s been the ND at LIN’s WTNH-TV in Hartford/New Haven for the past two years, has been promoted to General Manager of the company’s recently acquired KSNW-TV in Wichita. He was introduced to the staff at this NBC affiliate today. Erik previously had been an ND for WNEP-TV in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He’s also been an ND in Joplin and Springfield, MO and Savannah, GA. He’s worked in production, as a reporter, and as a sports director before moving into management.

Carl

WTNH wasted no time in promoting AL CARL to be the new ND at this ABC affiliate. Al’s been the managing editor there since April, 2012. He’s been an ND in Omaha, Savannah, and two stations in Huntsville, AL, and has held news management positions at two stations in Kansas City. He’s also worked in Albany, NY, and Saginaw, MI.

We’ll have more on all these changes in our full report, which may be delayed this week by my attendance at the RTDNA/SPJ/EIJ/NAHJ conference in Anaheim, where I hope to see many of you.

Monday, August 19, 2013 UPDATE:

A FOX o-and-o promotes from within to fill its vacant news director position.

KMSP/WFTC-TV in Minneapolis has promoted MARIAN DAVEY, who’s been the Assistant ND (and interim ND since BILL DALLMAN left in June) to be the next ND for this duopoly. She joined the station in 2002 as Managing Editor and was promoted to Assistant ND a year later. She previously spent 14 years at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, rising from intern to Managing Editor.

Dallman left after seven years as ND here (and five at another FOX o-and-o, KDVR-TV in Denver) to become the News Director for Fox Sports 1, which I’m guessing you know by the barrage of promos, launched this past Saturday.

This week’s full report may be delayed by our attendance at RTDNA, at which I hope to see many of you.

regards,

Rick Gevers

August 12, 2013

Greetings:

Apologies for our tardy posting this week, but hopefully the content will make up for that.

We have ONE new opening, that created by the departure of a longtime Alabama ND, and TWO newly named NDs, one in a top 15 market.

That leaves 25 stations with news director openings, THREE of which are featured in paid ads below, along for ads for an EP opening in Kansas City, a news content manager position in a great city if you like golf, and an ad for a newscast producer in Spartanburg, SC.

We have updates to our list of Other News Management Openings, some of which are in really large markets.

In our Names in the News…and Other Stuff segment, details about new projects for two veteran news directors, a former group President takes over in Salt Lake City, and we’ll tell you about an old TV news fad which apparently is new again.

All that and more follows this week’s changes:

Greetings:

It was nice to see many of you at this week’s NABJ conference in Orlando.

July 26, 2013

Greetings:

We are uncharacteristically early this week, in part because of the Brickyard 400 race here in Indianapolis, and in part to let YOU know about a chance to win $1,000 and a free trip to the RTDNA convention…but the deadline for this contest entry is midnight tonight!  Look below for the ad.

Just ONE newly named news director in our report this week, while, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO new news director openings.

There are 26 stations in our full list of open ND jobs.

THREE of those stations are advertising for their next ND. Check those ads out below, along with ads for a variety of other news management openings.

Want to win $1,000 and a free trip to the RTDNA conference in Anaheim later this year? Check out our ad below for an awards contest for personal finance reporting. But enter quickly…the deadline is midnight tonight, Eastern time.

Further in our report, there’s an obituary for a former Atlanta news director.

In Names in the News, a new president for a new national news network, KTVU-TV in Oakland reportedly dismisses three producers after it broadcast fake names of the Asiana Airlines pilots, and a Virginia news director gets a memorable send-off.

All that following this week’s changes:

New News Director Opening:

WXMI-TV, Grand Rapids, MI…while this is not a new opening, I did want to point out that the station is advertising the opportunity. Check out their ad below.

Newly Named News Director:

Just one business day after announcing NANCY KENT-SMITH‘s promotion to Regional News Director for station owner Raycom, this NBC affiliate promoted FRANK JONES to be her replacement. He’s been the Assistant ND here since 2004. He first joined the station in 1992 as a producer and was later named Executive Producer. He also worked as a reporter and anchor in the Tri-Cities market in Tennessee.

JEFF MULLIGAN, Assistant ND at KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, MO, moves to Indianapolis to be the next Assistant ND for WISH-TV.  He’s a former EP for WDAF-TV in Kansas City.

We told you a few weeks ago that BILL FOY was stepping down as ND of WSET-TV in Lynchburg/Roanoke, VA, to take a public relations position at Virginia Tech. His last day was this week, and his staff conspired to make it memorable. Click here to see what they did.

GM Note:

Simons

After 21 years at the station, and 6 1/2 as General Manager, WAYNE SIMONS announced his retirement from WINK-TV (Ft. Myers, FL) on Wednesday. His last day is today (Friday, July 26th). Finally, in our mention last week about PAUL DAVIS, we told you he was the second person to be named Illinoisan of the Year by that state’s Broadcasters Association. He’s actually the second person to be honored TWICE.
