January 12, 2013

Greetings:

The first full week of 2013 brings a full newsletter, with TWO  new ND openings and THREE  new NDs to tell you about.

Our list of open ND jobs now stands at  24.

We have paid help wanted ads for FOUR of those openings, as well as an ad for an EP job in Birmingham.

There’s an obituary for a longtime Texas ND and anchor, and some memorial information for WALKER MERRYMAN whose passing we reported last week.

And there are lots of items in Names in the News, including a replacement for BRIAN BRACCO at Hearst, lots of management moves, and a cable channel reorganization that leaves two veteran news people on the beach.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

Chapuis

KTVU-TV, Oakland/San Francisco, CA…longtime Northern California ND ED CHAPUIS has announced his resignation after ten years as ND here. Ed previously spent five years as the ND for KCRA-TV in Sacramento, and was also an ND in Las Vegas. He began his career in his hometown of Chicago, where he worked in a variety of roles at WMAQ-TV.  He served as Managing Editor for KCRA before his ND stint in Las Vegas. KTVU is owned by Cox and is a FOX affiliate.

WZTV, Nashville, TN…ROBERTA PETTERSON has left this Sinclair Broadcasting owned FOX affiliate after two and a half years as ND. She’s previously worked in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Tulsa.

Newly Named News Directors:

Cope-Walton

WRTV, Indianapolis, IN…we told you earlier this week that TERRI COPE-WALTON has been promoted here. Terri’s been the Assistant ND for the past year and the interim ND since KEVIN FINCH left the station in November. She first joined this ABC affiliate in 1998 as a morning producer but has spent most of her time here in Community Affairs. She’s also worked in Dayton. Terri becomes the sixth ND here since the summer of 2002.

Parker

KTHV-TV, Little Rock, AR…former WCAU-TV (Philadelphia) Assistant News Director DAVE PARKER is on the job as ND for this Gannett-owned CBS affiliate. He spent 10 years at WCAU, previously was the Assistant ND at WMAR-TV in Baltimore and ND for WDSI-TV in Chattanooga, TN. He started his career as a reporter for WHBQ-TV in Memphis. He replaces CHUCK MAULDEN who left the station in October and is now the ND for KOLR-TV in Springfield, MO.

Sipes

KAKE-TV, Wichita, KS…MICHAEL SIPES will be the next ND for this Gray TV owned ABC affiliate. He most recently spent five years as ND for KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs, a job he left last month. He previously has been an ND in Kansas City, Louisville, and Jackson, MS. He replaces DAVE GRANT who stepped down as ND but will remain at the station as Assistant ND. Dave’s been ND since 2006 and with the station since 1996.

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 UPDATE:

Cope-Walton

Three, two…and now just one. That’s the number of news director openings here in Indianapolis after today’s announcement that TERRI COPE-WALTON has been promoted to ND for WRTV, the Scripps owned ABC affiliate. Terri’s been the acting ND since KEVIN FINCH left the station in November.  She first joined the station in 1998 as the morning producer, was promoted to run the Community Affairs Department, and has been the Assistant ND for the last year.

Both the first two of the three ND openings to close have both been filled from within. STEVE BRAY, also the Assistant ND (and chief meteorologist) at WISH-TV was named ND for that CBS affiliate last month. The one remaining opening is at WTHR-TV, where the search is on to replace KEITH CONNORS, who left the NBC affiliate last month.

Also this week, MICHAEL SIPES, who most recently was the ND for KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs, has been hired at Wichita’s KAKE-TV. He’ll replace DAVE GRANT who remains with the station as Assistant ND and will run the day to day operation.

It’s been a busy few days. We’ll recap all of the action in our regular newsletter later this week.

Monday, January 7, 2013 UDPATE:

The first full week of the new year brings our first UPDATE, with news of an ND change in the San Francisco market.

Chapuis

ED CHAPUIS, who’s been the ND for Cox-owned FOX affiliate KTVU-TV (in Oakland) will leave the station on January 18th. He’s been the ND there for ten years. and previously spent five years as the ND for KCRA-TV in Sacramento and almost two years as ND at KTNV-TV in Las Vegas.

In a news release issued by the station, Ed says he is “looking forward to some new challenges.”

Also today, former WCAU-TV (Philadelphia) Assistant News Director DAVE PARKER was named ND for KTHV-TV in Little Rock, while ROBERTA PETTERSON has left Sinclair’s WZTV in Nashville after more than two years as ND.

More on both stories in our full newsletter later this week.

We have TWO newly named NDs this week, and another TWO new openings. By my always unofficial count, there are 24 stations with known ND openings.

THREE  of those open ND jobs are featured in paid help wanted ads below, in a wide range markets from the largest on down. And we have ads news management jobs in San Francisco and Birmingham.

Speaking of ads, we welcome the Devlin Design Group to its fourth year of supporting this newsletter. Be sure to consider them if you need a new set or a redesign of your current one.

We have some GM changes in Names in the News, and we have an obituary for a RTDNA supporter and former radio ND.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

KWHY-TV, Los Angeles, CA…this Mundo Fox affiliate is looking for a news director. My records show RAYMOND MESA was promoted to that job in October, 2011. The station is owned by the Mereulo Group.

Ludgood

WGCL-TV, Atlanta, GA…ERIC LUDGOOD has left this Meredith-owned CBS affiliate after just under two years as ND. Eric had been the Assistant ND here before leaving for a three month stint as ND for WNCN-TV in Raleigh, NC. He returned to WGCL in early 2011. He’s also worked at CNN, for WXIA-TV in Atlanta and in Columbus, GA. Eric’s replacement will be the third ND in just over two years.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hobby

WALB-TV, Albany, GA…congratulations to both the former and new ND here. RICK WILLIAMS, who’s headed the news department for 22 (!) years, has been promoted to GM for sister-Raycom station WLOX-TV in Biloxi, MS, where he’ll replace one time WLOX ND DAVE VINCENT who’s been GM there.  He’ll be succeeded as ND for WALB by his assistant ND and anchor there, DAWN HOBBY. She’s a longtime WALB employee who left for a few years to be the startup ND for the FOX affiliate in Albany, WFXL-TV.

KFBB-TV, Great Falls, MT…RYAN COLEMAN has been named ND for this Max Media of Montana ABC affiliate. Ryan formerly worked at KPAX-TV in Missoula, got his law degree, and practiced for a while before returning to TV. He replaces DAN CLOUSE who left in August, and JIM GRAY, who came out of retirement to serve as interim ND durning the search.

December 30, 2012

Greetings:

Best wishes to all for a great 2013.

We have ONE newly named ND this week, ONE new opening, and we’re removing one station from our list of openings (which I’ll explain below). Our figures now show 23 stations with ND openings.

We have removed KHQ-TV in Spokane from our list of station’s search for an ND. NEAL BOLING remains the Executive News Director there.  JANA GRAY, who recently left the station for an ND job within the same company, had held the title of News Director. She will be replaced, but that person will not have the title of ND.

We have paid help wanted ads for THREE of those ND openings, along with ads for a Senior Web Producer for a station in Michigan, and an EP opening in San Francisco.

We have more information on the passing of longtime news director PAUL STEUBER and an obituary for the wife of a former RTDNA chairman. And we have details on the retirement of a longtime Los Angeles news woman.

All that and more below.

New News Director Opening:

Miller

WXIX-TV, Cincinnati, OH…MATT MILLER has resigned as ND for this Raycom Media owned FOX affiliate. He’s been the ND there for the past 2+ years and was previously the startup ND for Raycom’s WMBF-TV in Myrtle Beach. Matt’s also worked for all four Cincinnati stations in a variety of roles. He’s also worked in Macon, GA, as an anchor/reporter.

Newly Named News Director:

WMTV, Madison, WI…RUSS BRUHN has been named ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the Assistant ND/EP for WPEC-TV in West Palm Beach for the past year. He’s also worked (for Gray TV) in Augusta, GA, as well as in Denver, Albuquerque, and Joplin, MO. He replaces CHRIS GEGG who left the station a few months ago to become ND for WISN-TV in Milwaukee.

Obituaries:

Steuber

There will be no memorial service or funeral for longtime newsman PAUL STEUBER who died Christmas Day at the age of 65. We told you about Paul’s lengthy background in a midweek UPDATE. His Linkedin page details the many markets in which Paul worked, though it does not include his most recent duties as an in-house consultant for WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD, where his old friend and former co-worker CRAIG JAHELKA is the GM.

Thanks to old friend LEE GILES (for whom Paul once worked) who alerted me to Paul’s blog. It’s not been updated for a few years, but I’d encourage you to spend a few minutes and check it out. It’s well written, often very funny, and provides a great look back at what many feel was the golden age of local TV news.

Our sympathy to former RTDNA Chairman BILL YEAGER on the loss of his wife, KATHY, who died December 20th at the age of 65.  Your note of sympathy will reach Bill at bill.yeager@cumulus.com

December 22, 2012

Wednesday, December 26, 2012 UPDATE:

(Bold content updated Thursday AM 12/27/12.)

Steuber

I’m sorry to sadden your holidays with news of the death of PAUL STEUBER.

Paul died Christmas Day in a hospital in Salisbury, MD, after a lengthy illness. He would have been 66 on January 10th.

Paul most recently had been working as an in house consultant for WBOC-TV in Salisbury.

His background was extensive, as well as his influence on those whose lives he touched. His complete work history can be found here on his Linkedin page. Briefly, he worked as a News Director in Cleveland, Miami, Baltimore, Oklahoma City, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (three times), Toledo and Peoria. He also worked in New York, Washington, Detroit, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Grand Rapids, MI.

In my limited dealing with him I remember someone with a terrific sense of humor and that he was a huge fan of Michigan State, his alma mater.

Paul is survived by a brother and two nephews.  His remains will be cremated, and there will be no memorial service.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

I hope the holidays…and the New Year…are everything you hope for.

We have THREE new NDs to share with you this week, while there’s just ONE opening that I’m aware of. That brings our count of open ND jobs to 24.

We have paid help wanted ads for FOUR of those ND openings, along with ads for an EP in San Francisco for a newscast producer in North Carolina.

Three commercial stations were honored with DuPont Awards this week. That’s among the items in Names in the News, along with some management moves, a former ND joins the RTDNA staff, a bunch of new GMs, and we’ll tell you about a former Dallas and Kansas City ND who’s on the mend after surgery.

Also of note this week, another shared services deal resulted in the consolidation of two Albany (NY) newsrooms. WTEN-TV is now producing newscasts that air on WXXA-TV there. Veteran ND DAVID BAER and WXXA’s GM, BILL SALLY, were released. And WXXA’s Sales Manager took a GM’s position in Wisconsin (more on that in Names in the News.)

New News Director Openings:

Diorio

WDTN-TV, Dayton, OH…STEVE DIORIO has left this LIN Media owned NBC affiliate after more than five years as ND. Steve was the longtime Operations Manager at the station before being promoted to ND.

Newly Named News Directors:

Donnellan

WKYC-TV, Cleveland, OH…congratulations to BRENNAN DONNELLAN who’s being promoted to ND for this Gannett owned NBC affiliate. Brennan’s a former ND in Syracuse (WSTM-TV) and Cincinnati (WLWT-TV). He spent almost two years out of a newsroom before joining WKYC as Managing Editor of News and Digital Content last April. Brennan’s also worked in Boston, Atlanta, Norfolk, and Columbus, OH. He replaces RITA ANDOLSEN who was promoted to a new job last April after five years as ND. Longtime Cleveland broadcaster VIRGIL DOMINIC has been serving as the interim ND here.

WPXI-TV, Pittsburgh, PA…promoted MIKE OLIVEIRA to ND. Mike’s been the Managing Editor at this Cox-owned NBC affiliate. He first joined the station as an EP in 2005 and was promoted in 2010. Mike previously worked as a producer for WHDH-TV in Boston and WTVH-TV in Syracuse. He replaces MIKE GOLDRICK who left the station in October after three years as ND to become ND for WRC-TV in Washington.

Weesner

KHGI-TV, Kearney, NE…the better late than never award goes to…me…for being so tardy in reporting MATT WEESNER’s promotion to ND here. He was promoted in November, 2011. Matt joined the station in 2005 as a photographer, then moved up the ranks to Chief Photographer, Technical Director, Production Manager, and now ND for this Pappas owned ABC affiliate. He replaces MARK BAUMERT who left the station for job out of TV in September, 2011.

Carros

And we have a little more information on an item we reported last week. We told you that ADAM CARROS had been named ND for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids and that he had been a producer for another station in the market. That’s true, but we didn’t know at the time that Adam had moved to KCRG in 2009 as a producer. He was later promoted to Content Manager there before becoming ND in October.

Congratulations to Adam, whose father, the late MARK CARROS had also been an ND.

Best wishes to former Kansas City and Dallas ND MIKE McDONALD who’s on the mend from surgery on his appendix and a subsequent infection. Mike’s back home now and doing well. He’d enjoy your note of good cheer at: kcmikemcd@yahoo.com
