July 20, 2012

Tuesday, July 24, 2012 UPDATE:

Well, THAT didn’t take long.

Schwaid

Just one day after he announced he was leaving Philadelphia’s WTXF-TV, it was announced today that veteran news director STEVE SCHWAID is joining consulting firm CRAWFORD JOHNSON & NORTHCOTT (CJ&N) as its VP of Digital Strategy. He’ll begin working for CJ&N on August 1.

More on this story in our regular newsletter later this week (it may be delayed by a busy weekend of racing here in Indianapolis.)

There are two other stories of note: KATU-TV (Portland, OR) News Director DON PRATT is being promoted to GM for sister Fisher station KBOI-TV in Boise, ID. But you can put your resume down…Assistant ND TIFFANI LUPENSKI will replace Don as ND.

Finally, long-ago Dallas News Director EDDIE BARKER died yesterday. Many of you may remember Eddie as the longtime Exhibit Chairman of the RTNDA convention. A few of you may know he was a reporter who may have been the first newsman to report that President Kennedy had died after being shot in Dallas in 1963. More details (and an interesting YouTube link) are in this article from the Dallas Morning News.

As always, we’ll have all the week’s changes in our regular report later this week.

Monday, July 23, 2012 UPDATE:

Schwaid

Another news director shakeup in the Philadelphia market, where STEVE SCHWAID is leaving Fox’s WTXF-TV. Steve sent an email to his staff this morning promising to explain to them later today “my decision not to renew my contract.”

Steve’s been the VP/ND there for about a year. Before that he’d been VP of Digital Content and News for Meredith Broadcasting, and ND for that company’s Atlanta CBS affiliate, WGCL-TV. He spent much of career with NBC, including an earlier run as ND for WCAU-TV in Philadelphia. At NBC, he was VP of News and Programming for the NBC owned stations, oversaw the transition team when NBC bought KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco, and was ND for WVIT-TV in Hartford. He’s also been an ND in Tampa and Portland, ME, and worked in Dayton and Charlotte.

His departure comes one week after ANZIO WILLIAMS began as ND for WCAU-TV in Philadelphia, replacing WCAU veteran CHRIS BLACKMAN.

As always, we’ll have all the week’s changes in our regular report later this week.

Greetings:

A flurry of activity late in the week produced a lot of news for this week’s newsletter. We have THREE new ND’s to tell you about, two just announced this afternoon. And we have TWO new openings, one created by an ND being promoted to a GM job within Hearst. That means, by our count, 34 stations are still looking for a new ND.

FOUR of those open ND jobs are advertised below, as well as a blind box ad for a large market station. And we have THREE ads for EP positions around the country.

Next Friday (July 27th) is the deadline for applications for the Kneeland Project. Not familiar with it?  You should be, and you can learn more below.

We have the obituary for a long-ago Arkansas News Director best known for his investigative reporting, details on a reorganization involving NBC News, a number of news managers on the move, and we’ll tell you how one ND achieved every golfer’s dream…a hole in one.

All that, and more, below…after this week’s changes:

Greetings:

A surprising ND change in Phoenix late yesterday is one of FIVE new ND openings in this week’s report. And there are FOUR newly named NDs.

Those changes bump our list of open ND jobs to 34.

There are THREE new paid help wanted ads this week, one for a top five market ND job, and two for EP positions in a wide variety of market sizes and geography. And we’re advertising an opportunity for a FREE news management training seminar.

In our relatively new Situations Wanted segment, we’ll introduce you to a large market news manager who’s seeking a new opportunity.

In Names in the News, we’ll tell you about the SEVEN local stations who’ve been nominated for National Emmys. And we’ll report on some news managers on the move, and one ND who’s added a new daughter to his family.

All that, and more, below…after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

KNXV-TV, Phoenix, AZ…in a move late Thursday that caught many by surprise, JOE HENGEMUEHLER announced that he’s leaving next month. Joe told me he’s looking for a new challenge that will give him a better balance of work and life. He’s been ND here for six years and worked at this Scripps-owned ABC station for what he says is ten great years. Joe’s worked at two other Phoenix stations, was an ND in Oklahoma City, and has also worked in Washington, DC.

WFTV, Orlando, FL…this COX-owned ABC affiliate is looking for a new ND to replace BOB JORDAN. We told you a few days ago that Bob’s moving to sister-Cox station KIRO-TV in Seattle. Bob’s finishing his third stint as ND here, and will now be an ND for a second Seattle station, having worked at KING-TV years ago. More on his new job below.

KWCH-TV, Wichita, KS…CHAD CROSS is leaving the Sunflower Broadcast owned CBS affiliate to become ND for KXAN-TV in Austin, TX. More on that below. He’s been ND here for almost four years.

Daley-Hinkens

WFRV-TV, Green Bay, WI…CARMELYN DALEY-HINKENS is leaving to become the Assistant ND/News Content Manager for WITI-TV in Milwaukee. She’s worked here since 2008 and was promoted to ND last August. Weindel

KBOI-TV, Boise, ID…JULIE WEINDEL has left this Fisher Broadcast owned ABC affiliate after almost three years as ND. (If you’re confused, the call letters used to be KBCI-TV). Earlier in her career, Julie spent 12 years at WHIO-TV in Dayton, almost nine of them as news director, before leaving that Cox owned station to start her own media company. Julie tells me she’s ready to move on to another market.

Newly Named News Directors:

KSTS-TV, San Jose/San Francisco, CA…FREDDY OLDENBURG will start Monday as the next ND for this Telemundo-owned station. He has been the EP of a program called “Noche de Perros” on TeleFutura which was recently cancelled. KSTS shares facilities with NBC’s KNTV in San Jose.

Jordan

KIRO-TV, Seattle, WA….we told you earlier this week that BOB JORDAN was returning to Seattle, this time as ND for Cox’s KIRO-TV. The move brings him much closer to his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in Seattle.  Bob’s spent the last ten years as ND for Cox’s WFTV in Orlando. That’s his third stint at WFTV, and he’s previously been an ND in Seattle for KING-TV. He’s also been an ND in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Tampa, and a General Manager in West Palm Beach. He replaces TODD MOHKTARI who left last month after five years as ND to become VP/News for KNBC-TV in his native Los Angeles.

Cross

KXAN-TV, Austin, TX…CHAD CROSS has been named ND for the Lin Media owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the ND for KWCH-TV in Wichita since September, 2008, when he was promoted to the top job. He’s worked there since 2002 as a producer, reporter, anchor and assignment editor. It’s a return to Austin for Chad, who’s a graduate of the University of Texas-Austin. He replaces MICHAEL FABAC who left the station in May after more than five years as ND.

Springer

KAAL-TV, Austin, MN…DAVID SPRINGER is the new ND for this Hubbard Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. He previously worked for News 12 Connecticut and has also worked in South Carolina and Oregon. At KAAL, he replaces MIKE SCRHAM who left the station in April after five years as ND. Mike moved to Indianapolis to become the morning EP for WISH-TV.

Wednesday, July 11, 2012 UPDATE:

Jordan

In another move that was widely speculated by websites and people who speculate on such things, BOB JORDAN is returning to Seattle, this time as news director for KIRO-TV, the Cox-owned CBS affiliate. Bob has been the ND for Cox’s WFTV in Orlando since 2002 (his third stint at that ABC affiliate). Earlier in his career, he served as ND for KING-TV in Seattle. Bob’s also been an ND in Los Angeles, Tampa, and Minneapolis, and a General Manager in West Palm Beach. Bob’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren live in Seattle.

He replaces TODD MOKHTARI who left in June to become VP/News for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. Todd was ND here for more than five years.

As always, we’ll have all the week’s changes in our regular report later this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

It’s a good week if your name is Williams.

TWO of our THREE newly named NDs have that surname. And we have THREE new ND openings, though none created by anyone named Williams. But one of those openings is created by the departure of a well known ND taking a digital job.

Those changes bump our list of open ND jobs to 32.

We have a total of EIGHT paid ads, four for ND jobs, and four for EP positions.

In Names in the News, a bit of a surprise from Cleveland, where VIRGIL DOMINIC has returned to a newsroom. That story is below, along with a few news managers on the move, some updates to our list of Other News Management Openings, and we have a free Situations Wanted listing for someone hoping to return to the business.

All that, and more, below…after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

Duitch

KDAF-TV, Dallas, TX…veteran newsman DAVID DUITCH is leaving this Tribune owned station after four years to become Editor of dallasnews.com, the website for the Dallas Morning News. The newspaper is published by A.H. Belo, which was formed when Belo split its broadcast and print holdings into two companies. David spent many years working for Belo, as ND for its stations in Tulsa, Sacramento, and Dallas, and also held corporate positions including head of the company’s Washington bureau, overseeing both print and broadcast operations there. In his new job, David is reunited with JIM MORONEY, who hired him in Tulsa when he was the GM there. They’ve worked together several times during David’s Belo career.

Di Sciullo

WKBW-TV, Buffalo, NY…after almost 30 years in a variety of roles at this Granite owned ABC affiliate, JOHN DI SCIULLO is going across town to become Executive Director of Production and Promotion for WBBZ-TV, an independent station in Buffalo. John first joined WKBW in 1983 as producer of AM Buffalo, and (with the exception of short run as a producer in New York City) has worked there ever since. He’s been ND for 3 1/2 years. You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Grogan

KJCT-TV, Grand Junction, CO…CHRIS GROGAN has left this News Press & Gazette owned ABC affiliate after two years as news director. He’d previously been a news director in Great Falls, MT, and had earlier worked as a reporter/anchor for another Grand Junction station. Chris has also worked for News 12 Connecticut and in Springfield, MO.

It’s not a new opening, but we do have a new paid ad this week for the ND job at WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH. And there are ads for a total of four ND jobs, and four EP openings.

Newly Named News Directors:

A.Williams

WCAU-TV, Philadelphia, PA…we first reported on Thursday that ANZIO WILLIAMS had been named VP/News for this NBC o-and-o. Anzio spent the last five years as ND for Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento. He’d earlier been the ND for another Hearst station, WDSU-TV in New Orleans, and worked for the company in Orlando and Cincinnati. Anzio also worked in Charlotte and Greensboro, NC. He replaces CHRIS BLACKMAN who left the station in June after 10 years as ND and 25 with NBC.

K.Williams

WTLV/WJXX-TV, Jacksonville, FL…veteran news director KATHY WILLIAMS will be the next ND for the Gannett owned NBC/ABC duopoly. She’s a former ND for KRIV-TV in Houston, WKYC-TV and WJW-TV in Cleveland. Most recently she was the Assistant ND for KPRC-TV in Houston. She’s also worked in Chicago and Washington, as well as in Houston earlier in her career. Kathy replaces MIKE GARBER who left the station in May to become ND for WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL.

KWQC-TV, Quad Cities, IL…BETH MARSOUN has been promoted to news director for this Young Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. She’s been the executive producer and has worked there in a variety of roles since 2003. She replaces DENISE KILLIAN who left in February for a job at KDAF-TV in Dallas.

Friday, July 6, 2012 UPDATE:

Williams

ANZIO WILLIAMS didn’t need too long to ‘pursue some other career interests and opportunities’.

He’s been named News Director for WCAU-TV, the NBC o-and-o in Philadelphia.

We told you a few weeks ago that Anzio was leaving KCRA-TV in Sacramento to look into other career possibilities. He spent five years as ND for that Hearst-owned NBC affiliate, and two years before that as ND of Hearst’s WDSU-TV in New Orleans. He’s also worked in Orlando, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Miami, and Greensboro, NC.

At WCAU, he replaces CHRIS BLACKMAN who left the station last month after ten years as ND, and 25 years with NBC in a variety of roles.

We’ll have more on this story, and all the week’s moves (and there are a number) in our full report, which will likely be delayed by a little bit this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

Best wishes to all for a safe (and cool) holiday.

We have TWO new news director openings to share with you this week, and, to the best of my knowledge, no new NDs were named this week.

Those changes bump our list of open ND jobs to 32.

That count would have been higher, but we’ve removed KSAX-TV in Alexandria, MN from the list since the station eliminated its news operation this week, costing 17 people their jobs. KSAX is a satellite operation of KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, and both stations are owned by Hubbard Broadcasting.

We have a record number of paid ads this week with openings in a wide range of market sizes and locations. In all, there are FOUR ads for news directors and SEVEN ads for executive producers.

We have the obituary of a 20 year Georgia News Director.

And in Names in the News, details about a new job out of TV for a three time Chicago ND, a CBS honcho gets the Paul White Award, and a long ago Miami ND is recovering from a broken ankle AND a quadruple bypass.

All that, and more, below…after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WTVW/WEHT-TV, Evansville, IN..BOB WALTERS has left this duopoly. He’d worked there for 12 years and was promoted to news director for both stations last year. Nexstar owns WEHT and does news for WTVW. You can learn more about this opportunity in a paid ad below.

Moreland

WCTI-TV, Greenville/New Bern/Washington, NC…congratulations to SHANE MORELAND who’s leaving this ABC affiliate to become General Manager for WVNS-TV in Bluefield/Beckley, WV. Shane’s been ND for this Bonten Media owned station for almost four years. He previously has been an ND in Norfolk and Roanoke, VA, and has also worked in Miami, Pittsburgh, and West Palm Beach. You can learn more about this opportunity in a paid ad below.

And while not new openings, we do have ads for two other ND jobs: WFTS-TV in Tampa and WVNS-TV in Bluefield/Beckley, WV. You’ll find those below.

Newly Named News Directors:
