Figueroa

WTVJ-TV in Miami will name MIGDALIA FIGUEROA as VP/News tomorrow morning.

In a memo to staff late today, GM MANUEL MARTINEZ described her as having a passion for news, a wealth of knowledge and a strong understanding of the South Florida market. Migdalia is currently Senior Vice President of Local Content for the Telemundo Station Group. Before taking that job in 2010, she was ND for WSCV-TV, the Telemundo station in Miami. She’s also worked in New York and for the Univision station in Miami.

At WTVJ, she replaces LANE MICHAELSEN who left the station last month and was named ND for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati earlier this week. Lane was ND at WTVJ for about 2 1/2 years.

Stoldal

Updating our earlier story…we know now more about the ND job opening posted on the website for KSNV-TV in Las Vegas.  When we distributed the newsletter over the weekend, we didn’t know what that meant for longtime Vegas newsman BOB STOLDAL, who’s been the ND there.

I heard from Bob a few minutes ago.  He’s fine and tells me that due to news expansion at both the company’s Las Vegas and Reno operations, he’ll be spending more time on his corporate responsibilities so they are going to hire a news director for Las Vegas.

Monday morning, March 12, 2012 UPDATE:

Longtime newsman LANE MICHAELSEN didn’t take too long to ‘see what’s out there.’

He was named ND this morning for Scripps’ WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, the ABC affiliate there. Lane just left NBC’s WTVJ-TV in Miami last month, saying he was going to explore other options. His decision came two days after a new GM was named. Lane’s also been an ND in Washington, DC, Tampa, and Little Rock, served as VP/News for Ganettt, and spent some time at Poynter. He began his career as a photographer and spent eight years as Director of Photography at KARE-TV in Minneapolis.

The move reunites Lane with WCPO GM STEVE THAXTON: they worked together at KARE when Steve was the VP of Promotion and Production there, and also when Lane was a Corporate VP/News for Gannett and Steve was GM of the company’s Portland, ME, station.

At WCPO, he replaces longtime ND BOB MORFORD who announced his retirement from the station in January. Bob turns 55 next month and qualified for retirement with Scripps. He plans to take some time off and then explore his next opportunity.

Also, in last week’s report, we told you about a posting for an ND opening at KSNV-TV in Las Vegas, but admitted we didn’t know if longtime ND BOB STOLDAL was leaving the station or concentrating on his corporate responsibilities.

I still don’t.

But I’ll update this website when I do.

It’s been an interesting week.  FOUR new ND openings.  TWO newly named NDs, both in top ten markets.  A new corporate news executive.  A former ND turned GM moves to the number four market.

Those changes bring our list of open ND jobs to 29.

We have a paid ad for one of the those ND openings, and three other help wanted ads, including a position at the AP, an Assistant ND opening in Tennessee, and a producer opening in Ohio.

There’s an obituary for a long-ago Chicago ND who’s the father of a well known actress.

New News Director Openings:

Brogan

WPTV, West Palm Beach, FL…we told you in an emailed update yesterday that JEFF BROGAN is leaving this Scripps owned NBC affiliate to take a corporate position in Cincinnati. He’s been named Senior Director of News Operations and Strategy, joining LANA DURBIN SCOTT in that role. For Jeff, it’s a return to his hometown and the place where he started his career at Fox affiliate WXIX-TV. He later joined Scripps’ WCPO-TV there as a producer, and was later promoted to EP and then Assistant ND, before taking the WPTV ND job two years ago.  Please see the advertisement below for more information on this opportunity.

KSNV-TV, Las Vegas, NV…this Intermountain West Communications Company owned NBC affiliate has a posting for an immediate opening for a news director. But I don’t know what the means for the status of BOB STOLDAL, the veteran Las Vegas newsman who’s been ND there since August 2009 (in addition to a long term as ND for KLAS-TV and at WTVF-TV in Nashville). Bob also held some corporate responsibilities, so I don’t know if he’s concentrating on those or if he has left the station. I’ll update this listing here when I find out, so you can check back.

KFSN-TV, Fresno, CA…in another move we reported via a mid-week update, TRACEY WATKOWSKI is leaving one ABC o-and-o for another. She’s been named ND for KGO-TV in San Francisco. (More on that below).

KGAN/KFXA-TV, Cedar Rapids, IA…SCOTT PICKEN is leaving this Sinclair-owned CBS/Fox duopoly. Scott will be there through the end of April and assist in the search for his successor. He’s been the ND there since the summer of 2010, and previously was an ND for KMTV in Omaha and KIVI-TV in Boise, and has also worked as an ND in Honolulu, Rockford, IL, and Fort Smith, AR. His successor here will be the fifth news director in six years.

Newly Named News Directors:

Jacobson

New York 1, New York, NY…DAN JACOBSON has been promoted to news director for this Time Warner Cable all news operation. He most recently has been the Assistant News Director here, and has worked there for a long time in a variety of roles. He began his career in print journalism and replaces BERNIE HAN who was promoted to VP/News for all the TWC cable news operations last July.  She had been ND there since 2003 and has worked for the company since 1992.

Watkowski

KGO-TV, San Francisco, CA…as mentioned above, TRACEY WATKOWSKI is returning to this ABC o-and-o as news director. She’s been the ND for sister o-and-o KFSN-TV in Fresno for the last six years, but had been the Assistant ND here for seven years before that. She’s also worked in Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and for CNN in Atlanta. At KGO, she replaces her former boss there, KEVIN KEESHAN, who left in January after eleven years as ND to become the ombudsman for NBC News.

Obituary:

One time WBBM-TV (Chicago) News Director JOHN MADIGAN died earlier this week at the age of 94. He suffered complications from a stroke. John began his career in newspapers, moved to Newsweek Magazine, and returned to Chicago in the early 1960s as ND for WBBM. He later moved to WBBM Radio. He’s survived by his wife, one daughter, actress AMY MADIGAN, and sons Jack and Jim. More on his interesting life in this obituary from the Chicago Tribune.

Congratulations to newsman turned general manager ERIC LERNER, who moves cross country to become GM for NBC’s WCAU-TV in Philadelphia. Eric’s spent the last six years as GM for KIRO-TV in Seattle, and previously served as GM for ABC owned KFSN-TV in Fresno, where he succeeded VALARI STAAB, when she was promoted to GM of ABC’s KGO-TV in San Francisco. Valari now will be his boss in her role as head of the NBC owned stations division. Eric’s a former ND in Chicago, Seattle, and Wichita, and worked in Providence, Rochester, NY, Buffalo, Greensboro, NC, and Des Moines. He began his career as a consulting associate for the late LARRY POND at Magid.

Two interesting developments to share with you this afternoon. Longtime newsman-turned-general manager ERIC LERNER moves cross-country to take a GM position in Philadelphia, while Scripps reaches inside the company to fill a corporate news opening.

Brogan

JEFF BROGAN, who’s been the news director for Scripps’ WPTV (NBC) in West Palm Beach for the last two years, has been named Senior Director of News Strategy and Operations for the company. LANA DURBAN-SCOTT also has that title and the two will work together with the company’s properties, and both will be based in Cincinnati.

The move is a return home for Jeff, a Cincinnati native. He began his career at WXIX-TV there, then joined Scripps’ WCPO-TV as a producer in 2000. He was promoted to EP in 2004, and Assistant ND in 2008 before taking the WPTV job two years later.

Lerner

Meanwhile, ERIC LERNER has been named VP/GM for WCAU-TV, the NBC o-and-o in Philadelphia. He’s been the VP/GM for KIRO-TV in Seattle since 2006, and earlier held the same role for ABC’s KFSN-TV in Fresno, at the same time…connect the dots…that VALARI STAAB, the head of the NBC owned stations division, was the GM at ABC’s KGO-TV up the road in San Francisco.

Eric’s a former ND in Chicago, Seattle, and Wichita, and also worked in Providence, Rochester, NY, Buffalo, Greensboro, NC, and Des Moines. He began his career as a consulting associate for Magid.

Congratulations to TRACEY WATKOWSKI who’s been named VP of News at KGO-TV in San Francisco, the ABC o-and-o there. It’s a return to KGO for Tracey, who served as the Assistant News Director there from 1999-2006. That’s when she became ND for another ABC o-and-o, KFSN-TV in Fresno, the job she holds today. Tracey’s also worked in Philadelphia, Cincinnati, and for CNN.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Tracey and her husband. She gave birth to their first child, Jacob, in December.

At KGO, she replaces KEVIN KEESHAN who left the station in January after eleven years as ND there. Kevin took a job as the ombudsman for NBC News.  (He also had been ND at KFSN before returning to KGO as ND.)

In other news, The Toledo Blade reported this week that 63 people will lose their jobs when WTOL-TV in Toledo takes over news production for Fox affiliate WUPW-TV. LIN Media is selling the station. Details in this story.

KNBC-TV, Los Angeles, CA…VICKIE BURNS resigned Friday as ND for the NBC o-and-o. Her note to her staff says she wants to return East of the Mississippi. Vickie’s been ND here since August 2010, and has previously run news departments at three other NBC o-and-o’s, WRC-TV in Washington, DC, WMAQ-TV in Chicago, and WNBC-TV in New York. Her replacement will be the fourth news director in four years here.

Tanaka

XETV, San Diego, CA…CHRISTINE TANAKA has left this CW affiliate after less than two years as ND. Christine has been an ND for WRBL-TV in Columbus, GA, and KIMT-TV in Mason City, IA, and worked briefly for another Media General station, WCMH-TV in Columbus, OH. This was Christine’s second time at XETV. She also worked for this Groupo Televisa owned station from 2000-2004 as Managing Editor and Assignment Manager.

WBTW-TV, Myrtle Beach/Florence, SC…congratulations to DAVID HART, longtime ND here, who’s being promoted to General Manager for WRBL-TV in Columbus, GA. Both stations are CBS affiliate, and both are owned by Media General. David’s been “Director of Content” at WBTW since 2010, and spent the five years before that as…drum roll, please…news director there. He’s also been an EP for Media General’s WSPA-TV in Spartansburg, SC.

Obituaries:

Our sympathy to the staff at KGTV in San Diego which is mourning the loss of two retired staff members. One was longtime assignment editor JACK MOREHEAD who died after a long fight with brain cancer. Jack worked there for 30 years. And the station also lost a former maintenance engineer, FRANK CRUZ, who also died of cancer. More details in this story from the station’s website.

VICKIE BURNS announced her resignation at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. She’s been ND there for about 18 months. Vickie’s spent most of her career at NBC owned stations, including overseeing news departments at NBC o-and-o’s in New York, Chicago, and Washington. Her note to the staff said she hoped to return East of the Mississippi.

There are TWO new news directors, both in top 30 markets in this week’s report. And one of those newly named NDs creates one of the TWO new vacancies we have.

So…our count of open ND jobs moves to 24.

KXTV, Sacramento, CA…we told you earlier this week in an UPDATE that TIM GERAGHTY is leaving this Gannett owned ABC affiliate after almost three years as ND. He’s returning to Florida (where his daughter will start college this fall) to be Senior Director of News for Central Florida News 13 (more on that below).

KITV, Honolulu, HI…GENIE GARNER has left this Hearst-owned ABC affiliate. She’s been ND here since September, 2009, and previously had been an ND in Louisville and Terre Haute, IN.

WBFF-TV, Baltimore, MD…we told you last weekend that (after ten years as news director) SCOTT LIVINGSTON was being promoted to VP/News for station owner Sinclair Broadcasting, and we can now tell you that the station has promoted MIKE TOMKO to be his replacement as news director. Mike’s been with the station for ten years, was most recently the Assistant ND for this Fox affiliate, and earlier served as Executive Producer.

A veteran news director moves cross country and returns to Florida.

TIM GERAGHTY, the ND for Gannett’s KXTV in Sacramento, has been named Senior Director of News/Station Manager for Central Florida News 13 in Orlando. Tim’s been ND for this ABC affiliate since May, 2009, but earlier in his career he was ND for WTVJ-TV in Miami. He’s also been an ND in Grand Rapids, MI, and has also worked in Kansas City, Kalamazoo, MI, Decatur, IL, and Columbia, MO. He replaces STEVE CHAVARIE who retired last November.

There’s a family benefit to this move, as well. Tim’s daughter will be starting school in Orlando this fall.

Lane told me he’s decided to see ‘what else is out there’, after more than two years here. (His announcement came just two days after MANUEL MARTINEZ was promoted to GM from a similar role at co-owned WSCV-TV, the Telemundo station there). Lane’s also been an ND in Washington, DC, Tampa, and Little Rock, served as VP/News for Ganettt, and spent some time at Poynter. He began his career as a photographer and spent eight years as Director of Photography at KARE-TV in Minneapolis.

NEW ENGLAND CABLE NEWS, Boston, MA…NANNETTE HOBSON is the new ND for this Comcast-owned cable news channel. Nannette (then known as NANNETTE WILSON) was ND for eight years at WNCN-TV in Raleigh, NC. She also worked for almost 20 years (in two different periods) for WRC-TV in Washington, and previously worked in Norfolk and for two different stations in Baltimore. She replaces DEBRA JUAREZ who left last September to become ND for WMAQ-TV in Chicago.

KAUZ-TV, Wichita Falls, TX…PRISCILLA FORD has been promoted to ND for this Drewry Communications owned CBS affiliate. Priscilla began her career at KAUZ, left to work in Oklahoma City, then returned to KAUZ, first as EP and later Assistant ND. She replaces TALIA NAQUIN who left the station last October after two years as ND.

WSIU-TV, Carbondale, IL…GREG TODD joined this PBS station operated by Southern Illinois University as ND in December. It’s a return for Greg, who was graduated from SIU before embarking on a varied career as a reporter, anchor, and also meteorologist and news manager. He worked in Dubuque, IA, Youngstown, Indianapolis, Seattle and San Diego, where he spent eight years as Managing Editor for XETV.

Names in the News:

There seems to be a trend towards naming new corporate NDs. We told you last week of BRIAN TRAURING’s promotion to that role for SJL Broadcasting. This week, we have two more to share with you.

Livingston

SCOTT LIVINGSTON has been named VP/News for the Sinclair Television Group, owner of (among many others) WBFF-TV in Baltimore, where he has been the news director for the last ten years. He joined the station when it began news in 1991, first as Chief Photographer and was promoted to Assistant ND in 1997. Scott’s also worked in Louisville, Salisbury, MD, at another Baltimore station, and for Group W in Washington. Your note of congratulations would reach him at: slivingston@sbgnet.com

Turpin

Longtime ND JIM TURPIN, now at KMPH-TV in Fresno, is assuming additional duties as VP/News for parent company Titan Broadcasting. Jim’s been ND at KMPH for the last two years, and has previously been an ND in Memphis, Norfolk, Wichita, Quad Cities, IL, and Ft. Smith, AR. During part of his time in Memphis as ND for WPTY/WLMT, he held a corporate position for owner Clear Channel TV. ADAM WOHLMAN has been promoted to EP at KYW-TV, the CBS o-and-o in Philadelphia. He’s been the 6:00 PM producer there. Adam’s previously worked in Boston, Miami, Minneapolis, Albany, Lynchburg/Roanoke, and Jefferson City, MO.

Callaway

Longtime Atlanta newsman CAL CALLAWAY is on the move. He’s the new Managing Editor for that city’s Fox o-and-o, WAGA-TV. The move reunites him with WAGA’s ND, MIKE McCLAIN…they worked together in Birmingham years ago. Cal’s been the Nightside EP at WGCL-TV the past two years. Before that, he spent 16 years at WXIA-TV, including almost six as ND. In addition to Birmingham, he’s also worked in Montgomery.

Turchetta

GREG TURCHETTA stays within Florida as he heads north to become Assistant News Director for WOFL-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Orlando. It’s his second time in Orlando, having previously worked for WKMG-TV there. Greg’s been the Assistant ND for WBBH-TV in Ft. Myers for the last six years. He previously was an EP in Seattle and Atlanta, and has also worked in Jacksonville.

KPTV in Portland (OR) has named IAN COSTELLO executive producer of its morning newscasts. It’s a return to Meredith Broadcating for Ian, who used to work for the company’s Phoenix station, KPHO-TV. He’s also worked in Spokane, WA.

SAM EATON joins WRDW-TV in Augusta, GA, as Assistant News Director/Executive Producer. He currently works for WBTV in Charlotte, and has also worked in Columbia, SC, Lynchburg, CA, and Midland, TX.

And congratulations to old friend (and supporter of this newsletter) DAN DEVLIN and DEVLIN DESIGN GROUP. The company was honored by NewscastStudio.com with an award for Best Local News Set of the Year for a set for WSYR-TV in Syracuse, NY.
