Happy Veterans Day. Thanks to all who served and sacrificed.

We have just ONE new ND to introduce you to in this week’s report, and, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO new openings.

That brings our count of open ND jobs to 23.

We have a help wanted ad below for an EP opening in Dallas. And we welcome a new advertiser, LiveU, which is offering you a FREE two week trial of their portable uplink product. (I saw it at RTDNA and was pretty impressed.) Check out their ad below.

Newly Named News Director:

Abraham

WNEP-TV, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA…congratulations to longtime station employee CARL ABRAHAM who’s been promoted to ND for this LocalTV-owned ABC affiliate. Carl first joined the station in 1983, and has worked in many roles, including assignment manager and assistant news director. Carl replaces ERIK SCHRADER who left the station in September to become ND at WTNH-TV in Hartford/New Haven. Eric spent three years as ND here.

New News Director Openings:

One other note. The consolidation of the operations of two Evansville stations is resulting in the loss of one ND job there. MARK GLOVER, who’s been ND for WEHT-TV since 2006, will lose his job.

NBC Owned Television Stations is the division of NBCUniversal that includes 10 local television stations and their digital channels and websites, as well as a group of out-of-home properties and a production company.

The Executive Producer is a leadership position overseeing the editorial, production and promotion components of the newscast and related cut-ins. This position is for an EP for our morning shows. The Executive Producer’s role is to oversee production of news content on multi-platforms, provide guidance and direction to news employees and perform as a member of the news management team.

Names in the News:

WXIN-TV in Indianapolis has promoted MEGAN ALICEA to morning executive producer. She’s been the interim AM EP for the past six weeks, and first joined the staff last year to launch the station’s 9:00 AM newscast.

And our sympathy to former Boston ND EMILY ROONEY on the death of her father, longtime 60 Minutes commentator ANDY ROONEY. As you know, Andy died last week at the age of 92. In addition to Emily, other survivors include son BRIAN, a longtime ABC correspondent, and two other children.

Saturday, November 5, 2011 UPDATE:

ANDY ROONEY died today at the age of 92, just a month after his final commentary on 60 Minutes. This news release from CBS News says he died of complications from minor surgery. The CBS News obituary is here. The New York Times and Washington Post quickly posted long stories.

He is survived by four children, including his daughter, EMILY ROONEY, a former news director in Boston and longtime host of the PBS show “Greater Boston” on PBS in Boston, and BRIAN ROONEY, who spent a long time as ABC correspondent.

WFOR/WFBS-TV, Miami, FL…we alerted you earlier this week that LIZ ROLDAN has been promoted to news director for this CBS o-and-o. Liz had been the interim ND since CESAR ALDAMA left in August to become Director of News for Comcast Sports Net Mid-Atlantic. Liz joined WFOR in August as EP of Special Projects and Investigations, but she’s no stranger to Miami TV, having worked in the market for 18 years at both WFOR and WTVJ-TV. She’d been away from TV for almost three years before returning to WFOR this summer.

KMIR-TV, Palm Springs, CA…GEORGE SEVERSON has been named ND for this Journal Broadcasting owned NBC affiliate. George most recently was an EP at KOIN-TV in Portland, and he’s also worked in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Anchorage. At KMIR, he replaces KATE GLOVER who left the station in August after 18 months as ND to become an EP in San Diego.

New News Director Opening:

WJFW-TV, Rhinelander, WI…longtime News Director HEATHER SCHALLOCK is leaving this NBC affiliate to take a new job as Executive Director of the Nicolet College Foundation. Heather’s worked here since 1994 (except for a short detour for a job in Eau Claire, WI.) She was promoted to news director in 1999 and has also been anchoring the 5:00 news. WJBF is owned by Rockfleet Broadcasting.

Names in the News:

Former Miami News Director SHANNON HIGH is joining CNN and will oversee the cable network’s four hour morning news block. Shannon spent seven years as ND of WFOR-TV and has also worked in Houston and Charlotte.

ANDY GUILLFAN returns to Michigan as the EP for the morning news at WDIV-TV in Detroit. Andy most recently was the Assistant ND for WISH-TV in Indianapolis, but earlier in his career worked in both Grand Rapids and Lansing, MI.

Finally, our sympathy to the staff of WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, FL, on the death last Friday of STEPHEN BUTTERS. Stephen was a multi-platform producer for that independent station. He died of apparent natural causes at the age of 29.

Greetings:

There’s a new ND in a top 20 market to report to you today.

Roldan

LIZ ROLDAN has been promoted to ND for WFOR-TV in Miami, the CBS o-and-o there. She’s been the EP of Special Projects and Investigations since August, and has served as interim news director since CESAR ALDAMA left in September to become Director of News for Comcast Sports Net Mid-Atlantic.

Liz had been out of the business for almost three years before joining WFOR for her second stint at the station. She worked on the assignment desk at the station for almost five years before moving across town to WTVJ-TV as Assignment Manager. Liz spent 13 years at WTVJ, leaving in October 2008 as Managing Editor for a job out of TV.

Hollis is helping with the search and will leave the after his replacement is on board. Hollis has been ND here for two years, has been an ND in Corpus Christi and Lubbock, TX, has worked in many other Texas markets as a reporter, and spent six years as a consultant for Magid. KTSM is owned by Comcorp which provides services to KDBC.

KAUZ-TV, Wichita Fallas, TX…this Drewry Corporation owned CBS affiliate is looking for a new news director. My records show TALIA NAQUIN has been the ND here for the past two years. She’s also worked in Ft. Lauderdale, Jacksonville, FL, and Lawton, OK.

He’s also been a GM in Dallas.Ft. Worth, a news director in Philadelphia, Washington, and Cleveland, and VP of News for the NBC o-and-o stations. Steve’s also worked in Cincinnati and spent some time as a consultant for AR&D.

KSHB-TV has two new news managers. This Scripps-owned NBC affiliate in Kansas City has hired KELLY HICKS to be its new Nightside EP. Kelly most recently worked for KCTV in Kansas City, and has also worked in Indianapolis, Sacramento, Cedar Rapids, and Columbia, MO. And MELISSA GREENSTEIN joins her third Kansas City station, having previously worked for KMBC-TV and KCTV. She’s the new EP of Special Projects. We’re delayed this week by travel and in part by growing pains associated with the new look of the emailed version of our weekly newsletter. I appreciate your patience.

In this week’s report, we have THREE new news directors to tell you about, while there are THREE new openings, bringing our count of open news director jobs to 23.

We have one ad, that for an Assistant News Director job in Tulsa, and we’ve updated our list of Other News Management Openings.

Some of that updating was due to a handful of new news managers at stations around the country, and we cover many of those in Names in the News.

KWHY-TV, Los Angeles, CA…RAYMOND MESA has been promoted to news director for this Spanish language independent station. He has been anchoring there, but earlier in his career he was the ND and anchor for KDBC-TV in El Paso, TX. Ray’s worked for KWHY for the past nine years. The station was recently purchased by The Merulo Group.

KXLN-TV, Houston, TX…MARTHA KATTAN is being promoted to News Director for this Univision owned station. Martha has been ND for sister-Univision station KUVN-TV in Dallas (more on that below). At KUVN, Martha replaces ISABEL GONZALES who left the station in August after almost two years as news director.

WROC-TV, Rochester, NY…BRYAN QUEEN has been named ND for this Nexstar-owned CBS affiliate. He has been News Manager for Time Warner’s News 14 Carolina-Costal, and previously worked for MSNBC and NBC NewsChannel. Bryan’s also worked in Winston-Salem and Asheville, NC. He replaces JERRY WALSH who’s been promoted to a corporate position within Nexstar.

New News Director Openings:

WPVI-TV, Philadelphia, PA…CARLA CARPENTER has been promoted to Senior VP of Digital Media for the ABC o-and-o stations. She’s been ND for this ABC o-and-o since 1997, and has previously worked in Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Louisville, Ft. Myers, and Lexington, KY, where she began her career as a reporter.

KUVN-TV, Dallas, TX…as reported above, MARTHA KATTAN is being promoted to ND for another Univision station, KXLN-TV in Houston. Martha’s been ND here for 12 years.

KTUL ABC -Tulsa’s Channel 8 is seeking an Assistant News Director. A background in newsroom management is a must.

The ideal candidate should be a leader with strong organization, communication and writing skills. You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day news, breaking news and special projects. Must be up-to-date on newscast showcasing and production.

Duties also include managing the assignment desk and working collaboratively between producers, reporters and photographers. Must be proficient in making sound decisions under deadline and incorporate station goals and objectives across all news platforms including ktul.com.

LIZ GARCIA returns to Arizona and joins KTVK-TV, the Belo-owned independent as EP of the morning news. She is currently the Associate EP for the morning news at WTVT-TV in Tampa, but she had worked in Phoenix earlier in her career. She’s also worked at another station in Tampa and in Washington, DC.

KELLY BROWN is moving south to become the Morning EP for KCNC-TV in Denver. She’s currently a morning product for KING-TV in Seattle. It’s a return to Colorado for her, as she used to work at KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs, CO and still has family there.

KEITH BALDI moves from reporter to Assistant News Director for Hearst’s WMTW-TV in Portland, ME. He joined WMTW in 2007 from Grand Rapids, MI, and previously worked in Clarksburg, WV, and Burlington, VT.

Fisher Interactive has promoted JENNY KUGLIN to General Manager, Content and Social Media. She first joined Fisher Interactive as Director of Social Media in 2010. She had previously been ND for Fisher’s KVAL-TV in Eugene, OR.
