We now have more information on the passing of former ND AL ZOBEL, who died last Thursday of a brain tumor.  Al was 58, and is survived by his wife of 31 years, a son, and a daughter.  A celebration of his life will be held next Thursday in McFarland, WI.  More details here.

KTVA-TV, Anchorage, AK…the new owners of the CBS affiliate, GCI, Alaska’s largest telecom, have launched a massive re-building of the station, including a relocated facility, additional newscasts, and a larger staff. WPIX-TV, New York, NY…we told you on Tuesday that MARK EFFRON is returning to a local newsroom as ND for this Tribune owned operation. Mark’s a former VP/News for Post-Newsweek, ND for WFSB-TV in Hartford (when PNS owned it), and a former MSNBC executive. He most recently has been working on a public radio partnership. The New York Daily News interviewed Mark about his new opportunity. He replaces BILL CAREY who left the station last fall after almost three years as ND.

KINT-TV, El Paso, TX…URIEL POSADA will be the next ND for this Entravision owned station. He has been working at the Telemundo station in El Paso, and has previously worked in Denver and Sacramento. Uriel replaces ZOLTAN CSANYI-SALCEDO who left the station in February for a job at ESPN.

I’m sorry to report the death of former news director AL ZOBEL, who died this past week at the age of 58. I’m told he’d been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Al left our business five years ago for a career as a financial planner. He most recently had served as news director for WKOW-TV in Madison, WI (where he still lived). He also served as a news director in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Jefferson City, MO, and Kearney, NE. Al began his career on air in Texas.

JESSIE KANE LYLE has been promoted to Executive Producer at Seattle’s KING-TV. She has been the 11:00 producer for this Belo-owned NBC affiliate.

PATRICK BENEDICT joins KNXV-TV in Phoenix as EP/Special Projects. It’s a reunion for Patrick with the ND there, PAT COSTELLO. The two Pats worked together when Pat was ND at KTVU in Salt Lake City.  Patrick has been working as a Special Projects Producer for KTVX-TV. Patrick also began SaltTVnetwork, a website devoted to news in SLC. He’s a former ND at KTVX, Assistant ND at KUTV there, and producer at WCMH-TV  in Columbus, OH, before that.

Two management moves at KMOV-TV in St. Louis: SARA DAVIS is the new Nightside EP there, joining the staff from KIRO-TV in Seattle, where she was the morning EP. And TIM KLUTSARITS has been promoted to dayside EP from 6:00 producer.

Since the beginning of the year, Sinclair Broadcasting has purchased 50 stations with the news this week that’s it’s buying the Fisher TV stations. And the company indicates it’s not done yet. More in this article.

Today’s surprise comes from New York, where MARK EFFRON has been named VP/News Director for Tribune’s flagship WPIX-TV in New York.

Mark’s career has included stops at MSNBC and several assignments for Post-Newsweek. He most recently has been working on a public radio partnership.

There’s yet another former ND turned General Manager as JEFF BROGAN takes over WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. Jeff’s a Cincinnati native who began his career at the Fox affiliate in the Queen City before joining WCPO as a producer in 2000.  He eventually rose to Assistant ND there before moving to sister-station WPTV in West Palm Beach as ND in 2010.  Last year he returned to Cincinnati for a corporate role as one of the company’s Directors of News Strategies.

Some other quick GM notes. Former KOMO-TV GM JIM CLAYTON will serve as the interim GM for FOX’s WGHP-TV in Greensboro, NC. ROGER HESS will be Nexstar’s first GM for its newly acquired WFFF/WVNY in Burlington, VT.

KELLY WOODARD returns to a CBS o-and-o as she joins WCBS-TV in New York as an EP. Earlier in her career she worked for KTVT-TV in Dallas. Most recently, she was the Assistant ND for an NBC o-and-o, WVIT-TV in Hartford/New Haven.

DUSTIN WADSWORTH is the new Assistant ND for WKYC-TV in Cleveland. He worked for 12 years for WMAR-TV in Baltimore, where his most recent assignment was as Director of New Media. He’s also worked in Rochester, NY, and Binghamton, NY.

Veteran investigative reporter JIM PARSONS for Hearst’s WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh has been named Assistant News Director there. He’s worked for the station for 15 years, and previously worked in Indianapolis, Buffalo, and Rochester, NY.

WCNC-TV in Charlotte has added LEESA DILLON as its new Assistant News Director. Leesa most recently was the Assistant ND for KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, and has been an ND in Cleveland and for News 12 Bronx/Brooklyn. She’s also worked in Los Angeles, Washington, San Diego, and Las Vegas.

Congratulations to MELISSA VARNER who’s been promoted to Assistant ND for WCSC-TV in Charleston, SC. She’s been at the station for more than ten years as a producer and Evening Executive Producer. Melissa earlier had been a producer for another Raycom station, WIS-TV in Columbia, SC.

JEFF BOWERS has joined WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, MD, as EP and Anchor. Jeff’s spent the last four years at WTOV-TV in Steubenville, OH, and previously worked for WDTV in Bridgeport, WV.

After 18 years working for FX Design Group in a variety of roles, KATHY MOSHER-BOULE has joined LIN Media as Manager of On-Air Image and Design. She’ll work with the company’s TV stations to make sure the sets, lighting, graphics, etc., will meet brand-building and integrated marketing strategies.

April 1, 2013 UPDATE #2:

As promised, here’s the second UPDATE of the day and, like our earlier one, it also involves an Indianapolis news director.

Rosenthal

KTVU-TV, the Cox-owned FOX affiliate in Oakland/San Francisco, has just announced that LEE ROSENTHAL will be its next news director. Lee is currently the ND for another FOX affiliate, WXIN-TV in Indianapolis, a job he’s held since 2009. He previously had been an EP for WBNS-TV in Columbus, a producer in Tampa, and a producer/anchor/reporter in Knoxville and Binghamton, NY.

At KTVU, he replaces ED CHAPUIS who left the station in January to pursue other interests. Ed spent ten years as ND here, and has also been an ND in Sacramento and Las Vegas.

We told you earlier today that KATHY HOSTETTER was named ND for WTHR-TV in Indianapolis. Rosenthal’s departure leaves WISH-TV ND STEVE BRAY as the senior news director in a market once known for ND longevity. Steve’s been ND at that CBS affiliate since December.

April 1, 2013 UPDATE #1:

Greetings:

In the first of two UPDATES you’ll receive from me today (and no, that’s not an April Fool’s Day joke), we have a new news director in Indianapolis.

KATHY HOSTETTER returns to the Circle City as News Director for Dispatch’s NBC affiliate there, WTHR-TV. We told you on Friday that Kathy was leaving her job as ND for WAVE-TV in Louisville for a new position to be announced soon, and soon it was.

It’s a return to WTHR for Kathy, who worked there as a producer and EP from 1998-2002. She’s been at WAVE for the past three years, and has also been an ND in Norfolk and Ft. Wayne. Kathy’s also worked in San Jose/San Francisco and Grand Rapids, MI.

At WTHR, she replaces KEITH CONNORS who left the station earlier this year to pursue other opportunities.

As promised, we’ll have another major market update for you later this afternoon.

Obituaries:

We have too many obituaries this week, unfortunately.

ALEC GIFFORD, a longtime New Orleans news director, anchor, and reporter, died March 22nd at the age of 85. He also spent one year working for NBC News in New York. This detailed obituary from the New Orleans Times-Picayune describes his long career.

Another longtime newsman, Kansas City’s WALT BODINE, died March 24th at the age of 92. He’s a one time ND for WDAF-TV who hosted a radio program for years. The Kansas City Star offers this lengthy memorial.

SANDY POLSTER, whose long career in both print and television included a stint as a news writer for the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, died March 21st. He was 71 and had fought gastric cancer. He got the last word by writing his own obituary.

Finally, our sympathy to ADAM BRADSHAW, news director for KVVU-TV in Las Vegas, on the loss of his father, GLENN BRADHSAW. The senior Bradshaw died at the age of 91 in his cabin in Wisconsin. He was a longtime professor of art at the University of Illinois. Mr. Bradshaw was known internationally for his works in abstract watercolor and more specifically in the Casein paint format. Obituary:

RENA GOLDEN, a longtime executive for CNN and The Weather Channel, died this week of cancer. She was 51. This story from CNN’s website tells the story of a woman who was born in India and rose to several Senior VP roles at CNN. She is survived by her husband, ROB, a daughter and a son.

DON OSIKA has been named GM for WISE-TV in Ft. Wayne, IN, replacing JERRY GEISLER.

KHALED ABDELWAHED is the new GM for KASA-TV, the Azteca America flagship station in Los Angeles.

And LEE BRANTLEY has announced his retirement after 18 years as GM for WTVM-TV in Columbus, GA.

Congratulations to WDSU-TV (New Orleans) News Director JONATHAN SHELLEY and his wife STACIE on the birth of ZACHARY JORDAN SHELLEY.
