September 1, 2012

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 UPDATE:

There’s a new news director in a top 20 market to tell you about.

Congratulations to longtime WABC-TV (New York, of course) Assistant News Director BILL McFARLAND who’s heading south to be the next news director for WFTS-TV, the Scripps-owned ABC affiliate in Tampa.

In addition to New York, Bill’s worked in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Hartford.

At WFTS, he replaces DOUG CULVER who left the station in June to become ND for WJLA-TV in Washington.

More details in our next full report later this week.

**** ***** ****

Greetings:

I hope your Labor Day is safe and dry.

We have lots of news in this week’s newsletter but not much of it involves news director changes. There is just ONE listing in our New News Director Opening section, and I should have included that last week.

That means our count of open ND jobs stands at 31.

We have FIVE help wanted ads this week, THREE new ones, TWO for EP jobs and one for a producer opening. And we are repeating TWO ads for news director jobs.

As I mentioned, lots of news this week and our Names in the News section is full of items involving former news directors who are taking new jobs.

We have two obituaries, one of a former South Dakota news man and one of a former RTNDA staffer who also worked for SPJ and Magid.

And we’ll introduce you to someone looking for a job in our free Situations Wanted segment.

And as we get closer to this year’s RTDNA conference, some of our advertisers are promoting their exhibits. Be sure to check out those ads below.

A Kinda New News Director Opening:

Greetings:

This week saw THREE new News Director openings, including one today in Indianapolis where a veteran news director left her station.

THREE other stations named a new ND (though all three have previous ND experience).

That means our count of open ND jobs remains at 30.

THREE of those openings are featured in paid help wanted ads that you’ll find below, along with TWO ads for Executive Producer jobs.

We’ve freshened up our list of Other News Management Openings, will report three obituaries, including two for mothers of people you may know, and, in Names in the News, will report on a number of executive changes in network news departments. And we’ll also feature a new job-seeker in our free Situations Wanted section.

August 18, 2012

Greetings:

To my knowledge, we may be headed for the first husband-wife set of news directors at different stations at the same time.  You’ll learn more about that possibility as you read about the THREE new ND openings which lead our report this week, along with FOUR newly named NDs. That brings our count of open ND jobs to just 30.  (And those of a certain, uh, advanced age might be interested in who’s been the interim ND at one of those newly filled jobs.)

You can learn more about one of those newly opened ND jobs in a paid ad below. And we also have two ads for executive producer openings.

We have three obituaries: one for a current New York City news manager, one for a newswoman best known for her anchoring who worked briefly as an Assistant News Director in St. Louis, and the third for a former Detroit GM and broadcast company president.

And in Names in the News, RTDNA names a Hogan honoree and a former ND gets a promotion at AccuWeather. We also have news of some veteran GMs with new jobs.

All that and more below!

New News Director Openings:

Phillip

KSHB-TV, Kansas City, MO…veteran news director PEGGY PHILLIP has left this Scripps owned NBC affiliate after more than three years as ND. She’s also been a news director in Baltimore, Syracuse, Memphis and Tulsa, and has worked in Reno, Miami, Boston and Chicago. Her departures leaves three of the 13 Scripps TV stations (Tampa, Phoenix, and Kansas City) without news directors. A fourth vacancy in Tulsa was filled last week.

Cates

WSPA-TV, Spartanburg, SC…congratulations to DAN CATES who is being promoted within Media General to become GM for WJHL-TV in Johnston City, TN.  Dan’s has worked for this CBS affiliate for more than three years. His current title is Director of Digital Content.  He earlier spent ten years as ND for the company’s WKRG-TV in Mobile, AL, and has worked in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery.

Adams

WICU/WSEE-TV, Erie, PA…LISA ADAMS is stepping aside as news director but will continue to anchor for this SJL/Lilly owned NBC/CBS duopoly. She first joined the station 30 years ago as a director and soon moved in front of the camera. She’s been ND here for about 18 months.  You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Hall

KDAF-TV, Dallas, TX…this Tribune owned CW affiliate has promoted LARISSA HALL to Director of Content. She’s currently the EP of the station’s morning newscast which is also seen on other Tribune-owned stations. Larissa may soon be part of the only husband-wife team to hold ND jobs at the same time. Her fiance, ROB CARTWRIGHT, is ND for WSYR-TV in Syracuse. He previously worked at KDAF. Larrisa has also worked for WFAA-TV in Dallas and KVUE-TV in Austin. She replaces DAVID DUITCH who left after four years as ND to become editor of the website for the Dallas Morning News.

Parcell

WFTV, Orlando, FL…we told you earlier this week that MATT PARCELL has been promoted to ND. Matt’s a 15 year veteran of this Cox-owned ABC affiliate. He most recently has been the Managing Editor there, and earlier served as Managing Editor for WFTV.com and as the Special Projects EP. He’s also worked as the ND for RNN in suburban New York, as an EP for both WBNS-TV in Columbus, OH, and WCIV-TV in Charleston, SC. He also reported in Charleston and Waco. Matt replaces BOB JORDAN who moved to Cox’s KIRO-TV in Seattle as ND.

Shepperd

KHBS/KHOG, Ft. Smith, AR…GREG SHEPPERD gets promoted within Hearst as he becomes ND for this ABC affiliate. Greg is currently Managing Editor for Hearst’s KCRA-TV in Sacramento. He spent five years at Hearst’s WDSU-TV in New Orleans and has also worked in Charlotte. At KHBS/KHOG, he replaces DAWN DUGLE who left the station in May after two years as ND.

Wilkins

KJCT-TV, Grand Junction, CO…DREW WILKINS has been promoted to ND for this News Press & Gazette owned ABC affiliate. Drew is currently the morning meteorologist/co-anchor and assignment editor there. He replaces CHRIS GROGAN who left the station last month to return to Montana for an ND job there. Of note: former Detroit News Director and Magid consultant TOM ROSENBAUM has been serving as the interim ND here.

Greetings:

Another busy week, with ONE new opening and FIVE open ND positions filled.

There are FOUR new ND openings, and THREE new NDs to report.

That reduces our count of open ND jobs to 31.

We have just one ad this week: that’s for an Assistant ND position in Portland, OR. We also have a new Situations Wanted ad (along with information about how you can take advantage of that free service.)

Also this week, I’m sorry to report the death of the husband of a longtime ND now working in Illinois. That information is below.

Two veteran ND’s lead off our Names in the News section: one is returning to TV after six years as a realtor. And we have a few news managers on the move there, too.

One small correction from last week: in reporting WNCT-TV News Director MARTY VAN HOUSEN‘s move to WGCL-TV in Atlanta as the Assistant ND there, I screwed up WNCT’s affiliation. It is a CBS affiliate.

New News Director Opening:

Vincent

KQDS-TV, Duluth, MN…JASON VINCENT has resigned as ND for this Red River Broadcast owned FOX affiliate after a controversial Facebook post. More details in this article. He’s been ND there for about 2 1/2 years. He was previously a morning anchor in Fargo, ND, and has also worked in Mankato, MN.

Newly Named News Directors:

Fischer

XETV, San Diego, CA…JON FISCHER is back in a newsroom as ND for this CW affiliate. Jon’s a former ND in Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, and Palm Springs, CA. He’s also worked for three Los Angeles stations (two as Assistant ND) and worked for ABC News for three years. Since leaving Palm Springs in 2009, he’s been an owner/partner in a consulting firm, RealNews Collective. Jon replaces CHRISTINE TANAKA who left the station in March after two years as ND.

Turchetta

KEYE-TV, Austin, TX…GREG TURCHETTA begins Monday as the ND for this CBS affiliate recently purchased by Sinclair. Greg most recently was the Assistant ND for WOFL-TV in Orlando. He’s been an Assistant ND in Ft. Myers, an EP in Atlanta, Seattle, and Ft. Myers, and worked as a photographer in Orlando and Jacksonville. At KEYE, he replaces SUZANNE BLACK who resigned her job last month after five years as ND.

D'Astoli

KJRH-TV, Tulsa, OK…SUSAN D’ASTOLI will be the next ND for this Scripps owned NBC affiliate. She’s currently the Assistant ND for Scripps’ WFTS-TV in Tampa, and will remain at that news director-less ABC affiliate until after the Republic National Convention later this month. Susan’s also been an EP for Scripps’ KNXV-TV in Phoenix and an EP for WSB-TV in Atlanta. She’ll replace STEVE WEINSTEIN who’s been promoted to GM for Scripps’ KERO-TV in Bakersfield, CA.

Freeman

WEHT/WTVW-TV, Evansville, IN…BOB FREEMAN begins his second stint as an ND in Evansville as he is promoted for this duopoly. Bob’s worked there in a variety of roles since 2005, and spent 11 years as ND for WFIE-TV in Evansville before that. He’s also worked in Louisville. Nexstar owns WEHT (ABC) and produces news for WTVW (independent) Bob replaces BOB WALTERS who left the station in June after about a year as ND and 12 years at the station.

Burch

WJHG-TV, Panama City, FL…JAMIE BURCH has been named ND for this Gray Television owned NBC affiliate. He’s been the EP for WKRG-TV in Mobile for the last five years, and has also worked in Atlanta, Dallas, and Bryan, TX. (It’s been a busy summer for Jamie: he and his wife SARAH welcomed their second child in May.) At WJHG, he replaces GAVIN MALISKA who left the station in June after one year to take an ND job in Macon, GA.
