July 9, 2011

Tuesday, July 12, 2011 UPDATE:

Several changes of note today, all involving veteran NDs.

Schwaid

The biggest move involves STEVE SCHWAID, who’s returning to Philadelphia to become Vice President and News Director for WTXF-TV, the FOX o-and-o there.  Steve is currently VP of Digital Content and News for Meredith Broadcasting, based at WGCL-TV, Meredith’s CBS affiliate in Atlanta.  He first joined Meredith in 2008 as ND for WGCL.  Earlier, Steve spent several years as ND for WCAU-TV in Philly, part of a long career with NBC.  He was VP of News and Programming for the NBC owned stations, oversaw the transition team when NBC bought KNTV in San Jose/San Francisco, and was ND for WVIT-TV in Hartford.  He’s also been an ND in Tampa and Portland, ME, and worked in Dayton and Charlotte.

At WTXF, he replaces KINGSLEY SMITH who was promoted to VP/News for Fox’s KTTV/KCOP-TV in Los Angeles after 3+ years as ND there.

And there are two other ND changes since Friday’s newsletter:

DAN FABRIZIO has been named ND for WSAZ-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV.  He most recently spent eight months as ND for WLNE-TV in Providence.  Dan’s been an ND in Charleston, SC, and worked for many years in Columbus, OH.

Maliska

And GAVIN MALISKA is returning to Florida as ND for WJHG-TV in Panama City, FL.  Gavin has spent the last year as ND for Bonten Media’s multi-station group of NBC affiliates in Montana.  Gavin was the ND for WOFL-TV, the FOX o-and-o in Orlando, before moving to Montana.  He’s also been a news director for WXIN-TV in Indianapolis and worked for FOX owned stations in Chicago and Detroit.

Much more on all these developments in our next full edition later this week.

Greetings:

Just ONE new news director and ONE new opening in this week’s edition, so our count of open ND jobs drops to 30.

But keep reading!  You’ll find a new ad for a producer position in sunny Florida, and a repeat of an ad for a promotion producer in sunny (well, maybe not this week) Phoenix.  Be sure to pass that information along to anyone you know who might be looking.

And we also have an ad for two upcoming seminars at Poynter.

In Names in the News, a former Los Angeles and Seattle ND has a new job.  We have information about two Texas news managers;  one who is staying, and another who is arriving.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

Newly Named News Director:

Eisenman

WJCL/WGTS-TV, Savannah, GA…JULIE EISENMAN is on the job already as ND for this ABC/FOX duopoly.  She most recently was ND for WICU-TV in Erie, PA, a job she held for three years before leaving in March.  Julie previously worked at other stations in Erie.   She replaces MICHAEL SULLIVAN who left this New Vision TV station in May after four years in his second stint as ND here.

New News Director Opening:

WXXA-TV, Albany, NY…GARY LaPLANTE is returning to Boston as Assistant News Director for WFXT-TV, the FOX o-and-o there, leaving an ND opening here.  Gary’s been ND here for more than three years, crossing the street from WTEN-TV, where he was the Assistant News Director.   He has family in Boston, and has previously worked there, in addition to Providence and Hartford.  WXXA is owned by Newport Television.

Aegerter

And updating one item from last week….we told you that MACRADEE AEGERTER was leaving KGWN-TV in Cheyenne, WY, for a new job, but at publishing time we didn’t know where .  Now, we know.  She’s joining WDAF-TV in Kansas City as a reporter.  Macradee was ND for KGWN for a year and a half, and worked there since 2006, first as a sports reporter, then sports director, before becoming ND last year.

July 1, 2011

Greetings:

Happy Fourth of July to you and your family.

This week’s report features THREE new NDs (two of them for the first time) and TWO new openings.  That brings the count of open ND jobs to 30.

Please note I’ve removed the open ND job listing for KTKA-TV in Topeka, as that search is off until the station’s pending sale is resolved.

Also this week, we’ve updated our list of Other News Management Openings. We have our first ad for a Promotion Producer at a top 15 market station (pass it along to anyone who you know who’s looking to move) and we have two ads for news director jobs in smaller markets.

In Names in the News, a handful of newly appointed news managers, and a former Minneapolis ND (at two different stations) takes on a temporary consulting gig.

All that, and more, after this week’s changes.

Newly Named News Directors:

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…IRENE MAHONEY-PAIGE was named ND here today.  She’s currently an EP for WTIC-TV in Hartford and previously worked for WVIT-TV in Hartford.  Irene replaces DAN FABRIZIO who left this ABC affiliate last month, shortly after Citadel Communications took over the station.

Hoyt

WTOL-TV, Toledo, OH…CJ Hoyt will be the next ND for this CBS affiliate.  It’s a promotion within Raycom for CJ, who’s currently ND of the company’s Evansville, IN, station, WFIE-TV. CJ’s been ND in Evansville since February, 2008.  He’d earlier been an ND in Lafayette, LA, and has worked in Knoxville, Greenville, SC, and Lincoln, NE.  He replaces ANDI ROMAN who left the station in May to spend more time with family.  Trivia time:  CJ (no periods) is the second person with those initials to move from ND at WFIE to WTOL.  The first was C.J. (with periods) BEUTIEN in 1993 when he replaced me as ND at WTOL.

Jones

WIS-TV, Columbia, SC…another Raycom station, another new news director.  RASHIDA JONES has been named ND for this NBC affiliate.  Rashida is currently Director of Live Programming since 2009.  She first joined TWC in 2004 as a producer, was promoted to Senior Producer, Executive Producer, and then to her current role.  She’s also worked in Norfolk.  At WIS, she replaces BRAD NEUHOFF who’s moving west to become ND for KOIN-TV in Portland, OR.

New News Director Openings:

WFIE-TV, Evansville, IN…as reported earlier, CJ HOYT is moving to sister-Raycom station WTOL-TV in Toledo to be the ND there.  CJ’s been ND for this NBC station for 3 1/2 years.

Aegerter

KGWN-TV, Cheyenne, WY…MACRADEE AEGERTER is leaving to become a reporter for WDAF-TV, the Fox affiliate in Kansas City.  She’s been the ND there since January, 2010, but has worked at the station since 2006, when she was first hired as a sports reporter.  She later became Sports Director before becoming ND last year.  She’s a Wyoming native.

June 25, 2011

Greetings:

This week’s report features a lot of new news directors, including one in Portland (OR) and another one in Portland (ME).

In all, FIVE stations welcomed (well, I hope they welcomed) new NDs, while TWO other stations have new openings.

That brings our count of open ND jobs to 32.

FOUR of those open jobs are featured in paid ads below, with two of those being new ads this week.  And we also have an ad for a management position in Cleveland.

We also have new listings in our Other News Management Openings section.

In Names in the News, winners of the RTDNA/Unity awards, and details about the death of the partner of a retired well known educator and former ND.

That and more after this week’s changes:

Newly Named News Directors:

KMEX-TV, Los Angeles, CA…MARIO FLORES has been promoted to news director for this Univsion station.  He’s been the Executive Producer there (and acting ND) since December after leaving Univision’s KTVW-TV in Phoenix, where he spent more than eight years as ND.  He’d earlier worked as an EP and producer there, and also worked in Palm Desert, CA.  He replaces ROBERT YANEZ who moved to Mario’s old station, KTVW-TV in Phoenix, as GM.  Robert was ND in Los Angeles for 2 1/2 years.

June 17, 2011

Greetings:

A busy week, with FOUR new ND openings (two of at stations which recently underwent…or are undergoing…ownership changes).  And there are TWO new NDs to introduce to you.

That leaves our count of open ND positions at 35.

Two of those openings are featured  in paid help wanted ads below.  One is a new ad, the second is a reposting of an ad we first brought you in March.  There’s also an ad for a Managing Editor’s job in Cleveland, and an unusual ad (for us, at least) for someone looking for support from a TV station owners or station groups to produce a new TV project.  Check that ad out below.

We have freshened our list of Other News Management Openings, as well.

Also this week, an obituary for a two-time Las Vegas ND from the 70’s, and details about a memorial service for a former ND whose death we reported last week.  In Names in the News, a two-time ND (and past RTNDA President) is retiring from his GM’s job, we have the list of the National Edward R. Murrow Award winners, the RTDNA executive director is leaving the group, and details about some news managers on the move.

All that below, after this week’s changes:

New News Director Openings:

WLNE-TV, Providence, RI…DAN FABRIZIO has left this ABC affiliate after eight months as ND.  His departure came shortly after new owners took over the station. Before going to WLNE, Dan had been an ND in Charleston, SC, and also worked in Columbus, OH, with the former GM of WLNE, STEVE DOERR. More details on this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Tadlock

WSAZ-TV, Charleston-Huntington, WV…this Gray Television owned station has a posting for news director on its website.  GROVER TADLOCK has been ND there since November, 2009, when he was promoted from Managing Editor.  His first job was in that market as a part-time photographer.  He was promoted to Director of Photography in 2005 and bumped to Managing Editor in 2007.  I’ve left a message for him (he was at work today but unavailable when I called) but have not heard back.  WSAZ is an NBC affiliate.

WFRV-TV, Green Bay, WI…LEE HITTER, who’s been ND for 17 years at this CBS affiliate, is leaving the station, which is being sold by Liberty Media to Nexstar.  Lee was among 22 people who were notified last week that they were losing their jobs.  He’s worked at the station for more than 30 years, as a photographer, then Chief Photographer, then Fox Cities Bureau Chief before being named ND in 1994.  He also worked for one year as a photographer in La Crosse, WI.

WAGM-TV, Presque Isle, ME…News Director and Anchor JON GULLIVER has apparently left this CBS affiliate.

Newly Named News Directors:

KVAL-TV, Eugene, OR…SEAN FLANAGAN has been named ND for this Fisher Broadcasting owned CBS affiliate.  He’s currently an EP for KDVR/KWGN-TV in Denver, where he’s worked for eight years.  He’s also worked in Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Scranton-Wilkes/Barre.  At KVAL, he replaces JENNY KUGLIN who was promoted to Director of Social Media for station owner Fisher.

Graham

WCJB-TV, Gainesville, FL…TERRY GRAHAM has joined this Diversified Communications ABC affiliate as news director.  He most recently was ND and anchor for WFXL-TV in Albany, GA, leaving that job in April.  He’s also worked in Meridian, MS.  At WCJB, Terry replaces BRENT BUELL who left the station a few months ago…telling his staff he wanted to take some time off and pursue his hobbies, including underwater videography.  Brent was ND here for five years.
