August 27, 2017

Greetings:

Breaking news. (Hey, your stations say it ten times an hour…why can’t I say it once a year?)

As this is being distributed, stations in Texas are covering the impact of the record rainfall from Harvey. Here’s an interesting recap published tonight by Poynter’s AL TOMPKINS.

On to our regular content.

There are THREE newly named news directors this week with just TWO new openings, both in top 20 markets.

So…our list of open ND jobs drops to 26.

Lots of other news this week. There’s a profile of a high profile Philadelphia news director. There’s a TV station General Manager who’s considering a run for Governor of his state. Some management changes at E.W. Scripps…and a veteran news manager is on the move.

We welcome WeatherMetrics back as an advertiser. Be sure to click on their ad just below. And there’s ONE paid help wanted ad for a morning executive producer position.

All that and more below.

WxMetAd-8-27-17

New News Director Openings:

WUVG-TV, Atlanta, GA…GIANNCARLO CIFUENTES has been named a regional news director for Univision. He’s been ND here since 2011.

Caputa

Caputa

WCCO-TV, Minneapolis, MN…we first told you on Friday that MIKE CAPUTA had left this CBS o-and-o after 6+ years as news director. Mike first joined WCCO in 2002, was named Assistant News Director in 2007, and served as the interim news director for several months before being promoted to ND in January, 2011. His departure means there are now TWO ND openings at CBS owned stations: the search continues at KYW-TV in Philadelphia for MARGARET CRONAN who left that station in July.

Newly Named News Directors:

Ng

Ng

KTSF-TV, San Francisco, CA…ANNE NG has been promoted to news director for this Asian language station, replacing GEOFF ROTH. (updated 8/28/17) She’s worked here since 1994 and had been the Assistant ND since January.  We told you last week that Geoff was leaving for an ND job at KREX-TV in Grand Junction, CO, after about a year as ND. We learned more about that brief tenure in this note from GM MARK ANTONITIS to his staff: (MoJo is what the station calls Mobile Journalists.)

I hired Geoff to guide our transition to MoJo and to help train his replacement. When he agreed to come here Geoff knew the job was temporary and with very specific goals, all of which he has well achieved. I want to thank Geoff for all his great work and wish him all the best at KREX. I know he’ll do a fantastic job for them. That’s what he did here.

An update, as well, on KREX and the man Geoff is replacing. We told you that Geoff was replacing JORMA DURAN. We did not know at the time that Jorma is off to Lansing to anchor at sister Nexstar station WLNS-TV.

Kompos

Kompos

WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, NY…ATHAN KOMPOS is the new news director for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. He’s been at the station for almost 14 years, beginning as a producer in 2003. He was promoted to Executive Producer in 2009 and has been the interim ND since June when KATE GLOVER left after just seven months as ND.

Harper

Harper

KTVA-TV, Anchorage, AL…we’re a bit tardy in reporting another promotion, that of JANIS (DEMAREST) HARPER to news director for this Denali Media Holdings owned CBS affiliate. She’s been the Assistant ND for more than four years and has worked in a number of other markets, as outlined here. Janis replaces BERT RUDMAN who left in April and is now ND for KVAL/KMTR-TV in Eugene, OR.

Friday, August 25, 2017 UPDATE #2:

There are two items of note today.

First, a news director change in Minneapolis.

Caputa

Caputa

MIKE CAPUTA, who’s been news director for CBS’s WCCO-TV since January, 2011, has left that o-and-o. He first joined the station in 2002, was named Assistant ND in 2007, and held that job before becoming ND six years ago. He earlier worked at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, starting as a dispatcher and rising to assignment editor.

His departure marks the second opening at a CBS o & o. The search continues for MARGARET CRONAN‘s replacement at KYW-TV in Philadelphia.

Shoop

Shoop

The second items involves funeral arrangements for WITN-TV (Greenville-Washington, NC) News Director STEPHANIE SHOOP, who died earlier this week. She was just 46 years old.

The complete details are here.

We’ll have more in this week’s full newsletter.

Tuesday, August 22, 2017 UPDATE:

Stephanie Shoop

Stephanie Shoop

For the second time in less than a week, I’m sorry to share news of the passing of a news manager.

STEPHANIE SHOOP, news director of WITN-TV in Greenville/Washington, NC, died earlier this morning at the age of 46. She’d been ND for this Gray TV owned NBC affiliate for almost 16 years, and had worked at the station for close to 20 years.

(Updated 8/23/17…the station hass updated the report with its on-air tribute:)  The station posted this story on its website.

Compounding the tragedy, Stephanie was married to the station’s evening anchor, DAVE JORDAN.

Our sympathy to Dave, the rest of their family, the staff at WITN, and everyone who is mourning this loss.

If I have any more details before the full newsletter this weekend, I’ll post them here.

regards,

Rick Gevers

Greetings:

What we may lack this week in the number of ND changes, we’ll try to make up for in other information.

We have just ONE newly named ND this week (and it’s a name that’s graced these pages many times over the years). And his move created our ONE and only new opening.

Our list of open ND jobs stands at 27.

There was a consolidation for jobs in Springfield, MO, late this week, with as many as three dozen people laid off at KYTV and KSPR-TV there, including KYTV news director SCOTT BRADY. This story from the local newspaper says the stations will simulcast the main newscasts.

We have ONE paid help wanted ad for a morning executive producer opening at a strong station in a very livable city.

And we have a handful of management and senior management moves, including the upcoming retirement of a former ND turned corporate executive.

Read on for details.

New News Director Opening:

KTSF-TV, San Francisco, CA…this Asian language station is looking for a new news director to replace GEOFF ROTH. More on his next move below.

Newly Named News Director:

Roth

Roth

KREX-TV, Grand Junction, CO…as noted above, GEOFF ROTH has been named news director for this Nexstar owned CBS affiliate. For the last year, Geoff’s been ND for Asian language KTSF-TV in San Francisco. By my count, this is his seventh ND job, plus he’s held senior management positions in a number of stations. Full details are here. At KREX, Geoff replaces JORMA DURAN who’s been ND and anchor here for almost six years (updated later 8/20/17) and is headed to another Nexstar station, WLNS-TV in Lansing as an anchor.

Obituaries:

We have a number of obituaries this week.

Manson

Manson

As we reported earlier this week, Sinclair Broadcasting Group ND CHRIS MANSON died Thursday. While he had been battling cancer, I’m told that was in remission. In fact, he was at work earlier in the week. At this writing, details about funeral arrangements have not been made public. When they are, I’ll update them here.

Chris had spent the last four years with Sinclair. He’d also served as a Group VP for Nexstar, an ND for stations in Fresno and Peoria, and he also worked in Wilkes Barre/Scranton, and Salinas, CA. He was an Air Force Veteran, including more than three years as an Intelligence Officer. More on his Linkedin page.

MIKE PURL, a former news director for KFSN-TV in Fresno, died Wednesday of ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 71. As you’ll learn here, he left KFSN in 1977 to join his family’s sheet metal business.

Stebbins

Stebbins

Three time GM MEL STEBBINS died Friday at the age of 75 of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He ran stations in Montgomery, Toledo, and Columbia, SC, then owned by Cosmos Broadcasting (and now Raycom). More details about his career in this obituary. Full disclosure: I worked with Mel when he was the sales manager at WTOL-TV in Toledo, but not when he was GM there.

Finally, MAURICE GUILLERMAN died August 10th at the age of 88. Known to most as “Moe”, he spent most of his career at WWL-TV in New Orleans, where he started in sales and rose to station manager. He retired in 1985 after 27 years with the station, which remembers him here.

Names in the News:

KEITH HATTEN makes the short drive down I-65 to become the new Assistant ND for Scripps’ WRTV in Indianapolis. He’s held the same job for WLFI-TV in Lafayette, and before that worked as a photojournalist and fill-in assignment editor for another Indianapolis station.

ADAM GAUB is the new EP for WCTI-TV in New Bern, NC. He had been a digital content producer for that ABC affiliate.

General Manager News & Notes:

Wasserman

Steve W.

For those of you who missed our UDPATE earlier this week, STEVE WASSERMAN is retiring at the end of the year. He’s currently a VP and Divisional Manager for Scripps, but is perhaps best known to you as a news director and general manager for the Post-Newsweek (now Graham Media) stations, working in Miami, Houston, Jacksonville and Detroit in a wide range of roles. He was also ND for WCBS-TV in New York.

ANDY ALFORD, who’s been GM for Nexstar’s WFLA-TV in Tampa since 2014, has been promoted. He’ll now oversee the company’s operations in a number of southeastern states.

Greetings:

A slight break from our normal format to recommend an article to you that is particularly timely. Poynter’s AL TOMPKINS and KELLY McBRIDE have some suggestions on the caution your newsrooms should exercise while reporting on this weekend’s incidents in Charlottesville. Here’s the link.

On to normal business. And there’s a lot of it.

We have FOUR new news director openings, and TWO newly named news directors. Both are returning to stations at which they worked earlier in their careers.

Those changes leave our list of open ND jobs at 26.

We have FIVE paid help wanted ads: FOUR are for news director jobs in markets ranging from Philadelphia to Jackson, TN, to Odessa/Midland, TX, to Rockford, IL. And that other ad is for TWO EP openings in a top ten market.

There’s also a lot of movement among news managers, including a former Atlanta ND who’s returning to a place he once worked in a management role. And we’ll tell you how you can send good wishes to a current ND and former educator and Magid consultant who’s on the mend from heart bypass surgery.

Read on!

Names in the News:

Volpicella

Volpicella

I’m going to resist using what you might think is my new pet phrase “from whence he came” in reporting FRANK VOLPICELLA‘s return to WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, FL, as the Managing Director of Content. Frank worked there as a producer before going on to a long and distinguished career as a news director in Huntsville, Lexington, Austin, TX, and most recently for WGCL-TV in Atlanta, a job he left in June after less than a year.

JAMIE HOSKINS moves from The Big Apple to Buffalo, NY, where she’ll be an EP for WIVB-TV there. It’s a return to WIVB for Jamie, who produced there before heading to NYC as a producer for News 12 and WABC-TV, where she freelanced.

ASHTON SMITH continues to climb the ranks at WSET-TV in Lynchburg-Roanoke, VA. She began there eight years ago as an editor, moved to producer, EP, and now Assistant ND for this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate.

Another longtime station employee has been rewarded with a promotion. DARRELL BROWN has been named EP for WLBT-TV, Raycom’s NBC affiliate in Jackson, MS. He’s been a producer there for more than 10 years and worked in production for 20 years before that.

Quarderer

Quarderer

Our wishes to old friend JOHN QUARDERER. on the mend from bypass surgery last month. Many of you know John, who was the ND at KOMU-TV while teaching at the Missouri. He later spent more than 20 years at Magid. He’s been the ND for WJFW-TV (Rhinelander/NBC) in his native Wisconsin for the last 5+ years. John’s also worked in San Francisco and as an ND in San Luis Obispo. You can send a cheery note to him at: jquarderer@gmail.com

General Manager News & Notes:

A quiet period of GM moves ended this week with a flurry of activity, some of which we reported earlier this week in an UDPATE:

Howell

Howell

JAY HOWELL, a former executive at Media General (and LIN Media before that) takes over KOVR/KMAX-TV, the CBS owned duopoly in Sacramento. The news release is here. He’s a former GM in Providence and two small Texas markets. Older readers will remember his father JOHN who was an ND in Detroit, Buffalo, and in California and also spent many years as a GM for WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh.

Mitchell

Mitchell

We love to report news directors becoming general managers, so we’re delighted to tell you that JONATHAN MITCHELL has been named GM for Raycom’s WMC-TV, the NBC station in Memphis. Jonathan worked for Raycom in Cincinnati and Toledo, where he was ND for what was then Raycom-owned WNWO-TV. He’s also been an ND in Spokane and San Jose/San Francisco. Raycom’s NICK SIMONETTE told the staff in this email.

Simonette

Simonette

That gives us a nice segue to tell you that the above mentioned NICK SIMONETTE is retiring next January. He’s currently a Group VP for Raycom, has been a GM at Raycom stations in Charlotte and Baton Rouge, and is a former news director in San Antonio, Louisville, and Baton Rouge. Congrats, Nick, on a 40 year career in our business.

Dale Woods

Woods

WSMV-TV in Nashville has a new GM. It’s DALE WOODS, who’s been the GM for WHO-TV in Des Moines for the past ten years. He’ll replace the retiring DOREEN WADE at this Meredith owned NBC affiliate. More from the Nashville Post.

Leon

Leon

And JAIMIE LEON moves within Graham Media to become GM for the company’s WSLS-TV in Roanoke, VA. She’s currently the Business Manager for Graham’s KSAT-TV in San Antonio and earlier was Business Manager for WPLG-TV in Miami when Graham owned that ABC affiliate. More here.

Monday, August 7, 2017 UPDATE:

Greetings:

We have two items of interest for you today.

Lupenski

Lupenski

First, TIFFANI LUPENSKI has left the news director’s job at KGTV, the Scripps owned ABC affiliate in San Diego. She’s been the ND there for the last 2 1/2 years. Tiffani also was an ND for KATU-TV in Portland, as well as the Assistant ND there. She’s been an EP in Seattle and Denver, and worked as a reporter and anchor in Birmingham and Lake Charles, LA, as well as for CNN and for radio stations in both Atlanta and San Antonio.

Volpicella

Volpicella

Also, we’ve learned that FRANK VOLPICELLA is going back to WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, FL, as Managing Director of Content. He was a producer there from 1979-81. You know, of course, that Frank went on to be a news director in Atlanta, Austin, TX, Lexington, and Huntsville, and also worked in Tampa and Atlanta.

We’ll have more on both these stories in our full newsletter this weekend.

Until then, I’m looking forward to seeing some of you at NABJ in New Orleans later this week.

A second week with just ONE new news director opening, and, to the best of my knowledge, NO news director openings were filled. Please let me know if you know of something I don’t.

There are FOUR items about news managers in Names in the News, including a longtime Los Angeles newsman coming out of retirement to take a new job in Seattle. And we have an article profiling the long career of a Minnesota newswoman that’s worth a few minutes of your time.

And if you’re going to NABJ later this week in New Orleans, I’ll look forward to seeing you there and at a reception (hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar) from the Univeristy of Missouri School of Journalism. Details below:
