April 13, 2014

Greetings:

THREE new news director openings and ONE new ND lead our post-NAB report.  (And it was nice to see a few of you in Las Vegas.)  That leaves our count of open ND jobs at 28.

We have FOUR help wanted ads, THREE of them brand new.  And we have updated our list of Other News Management Jobs.

Also this week, we have a rare taker on our free Situations Wanted listing.  In Names in the News, a new president for ABC News, and a new EP in Cincinnati.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

McManus-Faye

WICS/WICD-TV, Springfield/Champaign, IL…KATIE McMANUS-FAYE will leave this Sinclair-owned duopoly after the May book.  Katie tells me she’s going to return to the Southeast where most of her friends and family live.  She’s been the ND here for more than two years.  Before moving to Illinois, Katie spent seven years as  a news director in Dothan, AL.  She’s also been an ND in Jackson, TN, and Sarasota, and has worked in Nashville, Miami (two stations), Tampa, and Dallas.

KTLM-TV, McAllen, TX…this Telemundo station is looking for a new news director.  The GM is JOSE FLORES, who most recently had been the ND at the sister Telemundo station in Dallas, KXTX-TV.  We reported the ND opening there last week without knowing where Jose had gone.
Dugas

KLFY-TV, Lafayette, LA…DWIGHT DUGAS, who’s been the news director for this Media General owned CBS affiliate since 2008, is moving to a new position within the station.  That means the search is on to replace Dwight, who started at the station at age 18 as a projectionist.  He moved his way up through the ranks, including as a photographer and assignment editor before becoming the first African American ND in Southeast Louisiana.  His complete profile is here.

Newly Named News Directors:

KVDA-TV, San Antonio, TX…ADOLFO SEGURA is the new ND for this Telemundo station.  We’re a little tardy reporting his appointment:  his Linkedin page says he’s been on the job since last October.  He had been working at KWEX-TV, the Univision station in San Antonio.

April 5, 2014

Greetings:

TWO new news director openings, and TWO new news directors are featured in your pre-NAB edition of our weekly newsletter. That means 25 stations, according to our unofficial list, are looking for a news director.

If the long winter is getting you down and you’re considering a change, the ABC affiliate in always sunny San Diego is looking for a morning EP. That’s one of THREE paid ads this week. And THREE companies that support this newsletter with advertising will be exhibiting at NAB. Check their ads out below, stop by their booths, learn more about their offerings, and thank ’em for their support.

We have lots of other items this week. There are lots of changes to our long list of Other News Management Openings. And we have a lot of material in our Names in the News section, including FOUR stations who won Peabody’s, THREE who were honored by NPPA, a ten-time former ND now working as an interim ND in Charlotte, and several other stories.

If you’re going to NAB, I hope to see you there. RTDNA is organizing an informal get-together in the Parasol Down Bar at Wynn, beginning at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, but I fear most of you will have returned home by then. If you’re still in Las Vegas, stop on by!

Read on for details on all this week’s news.

New News Director Openings:

KXTX-TV, Dallas, TX…this Telemundo station is looking for a news director.

Martin

WIAT-TV, Birmingham, AL…as noted above, ROB MARTIN will be the next news director for this currently-owned-by-LIN CBS affiliate. It’s a return to WIAT for Rob, who was the Assistant ND there in the 90’s. He’s actually lived in Birmingham and commuted to Montgomery for the past 12 years, where he’s been ND at WAKA-TV. He’s also been an ND in Austin, TX, and Florence/Myrtle Beach, SC, and once worked in Tuscaloosa. At WIAT, he replaces BILL PAYER who left the station in December.

Bilek

We told you earlier this week that RON BILEK will be the interim ND for Gannett’s WCNC-TV in Charlotte. (The station is currently without a GM, ND, Assistant ND, and Sales Manager.) We also told you it completed the Charlotte hat trick for Ron, but that’s not quite true. It’s the fourth Charlotte station for which Ron has worked. He was ND at WSOC-TV, Executive Editor at WBTV, and Executive Producer at the PBS station. In all, Ron’s worked for 19 stations and has been ND at ten. One more note…Ron hired Gannett’s VP/News, ROB MENNIE, in Columbus. for his first TV job, and Rob served as Ron’s Assistant ND in Atlanta and Columbus.

JIM THOMAS, longtime VP/Marketing and Programming for Journal Broadcasting, is leaving for a job at Frank N. Magid Associates, the consulting firm. He’s the second Journal VP to depart recently, following VP/News BILL BERRA, who took an ND job in Tampa.

WUGA-TV, the University of Georgia owned public television station, will stop producing local content later this year.

General Manager News:

DEREK JEFFERY has been promoted to VP/GM of KGET-TV in Bakersfield, CA. He’s been the sales manager there, and replaces TOM RANDOUR who’s retiring after 16 years as GM and 37 years at the station.

March 31, 2014

Thursday, April 3, 2014 UPDATE:

Veteran News Director RON BILEK is back in a newsroom. He’s been named the interim ND for Gannett’s WCNC-TV in Charlotte. The station is currently without either a news director and general manager, and the Assistant ND is about to leave for a new job (if she hasn’t already left.)

It’s the Charlotte hat trick for Ron, who previously worked at both WSOC-TV and WBTV.

Ron previously worked for Gannett in Atlanta (at WXIA-TV). He’s also worked in Columbus, OH, and Cleveland, among other markets, in addition to many years working for a business journal company headquartered in Charlotte.

As I mentioned earlier this week, the full newsletter may be delayed this week by travel to NAB. I’ll hope to see you there.

Monday, March 31, 2014 UPDATE:

I always like it when a former ND is promoted to a GM’s job.

Easterly

Congratulations to veteran Cleveland broadcaster (and longtime ND there) GREG EASTERLY who’s being promoted within Tribune to be the next General Manager of WGN-TV in Chicago. Greg’s been the GM at the company’s WJW-TV since 2007, shortly before FOX sold it to LocalTV, which later sold it to Tribune. He spent ten years as ND at WJW, two years as ND for KNXV-TV in Phoenix, and also worked in newsrooms in Tulsa, Beaumont, TX, and San Angelo, TX.

Chicago media writer ROBERT FEDER has this story on Greg’s promotion, and you can read the company’s news release here.

Our full newsletter may be delayed this week by travel to NAB. I’ll hope to see you there.

Greetings:

A busy week!

ONE new news director opening, and THREE newly named NDs. Two of those five changes are in top ten markets. That brings our count of open ND jobs to 24.

We have THREE help wanted ads this week, two for EP opportunities in smaller markets, and another for two openings at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Please welcome ExciteM, a new advertiser who can help you increase your social media program. Click on their ad below to learn more about there services. Two other advertisers who help support this newsletter will also be in Las Vegas, Weather Metrics and Devlin Design Group. (You do know you can click on their display ads to learn more, right?) 🙂

Speaking of NAB, there will be the traditional gathering of news directors again on a non-traditional night. RTDNA has chosen Wednesday night (after the RTDNA day at NAB) at 9:00 in the Parasol Down Bar at the Wynn Hotel and Casino.

We have lots of items in Names in the News, including (but not limited to) new Assistant News Directors in the two of the top three markets, and a link to a Newslab report on how ownership changes are impacting local news.

All that and more below.

New News Director Openings:

Verrilli

WBZ-TV, Boston, MA…we first reported the departure of longtime news director JOHN VERRILLI in an emailed UPDATE on Monday. This Boston Herald article links his departure to rating woes at this CBS o-and-o. John’s been ND here for five years, spent five years before that as ND for another CBS o-and-o, KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, and also worked as the Managing Editor for a third CBS owned station, WCBS-TV in New York. John’s also worked for two other New York City stations.

Newly Named News Directors:

Mondora

KTTV, Los Angeles, CA…in another story we shared with you earlier this week, BILL MONDORA has been named ND for this FOX o-and-o. Bill spent the last 24 years at CBS News, serving as News Director for CBS Newspath for the past 15 years. He joined CBS as a regional Newspath producer in 1989, and before that worked in Orlando and Oklahoma City. At KTTV, he replaces KINGSLEY SMITH who left KTTV after two years as ND and after 20 years with FOX o-and-o’s in Dallas, St. Louis, and Philadelphia.

Many of you know Bill, who spent 24 years with CBS, the last 15 years as News Director for CBS NewsPath. He joined CBS as a regional Newspath producer in 1989, and before that had worked in Orlando and Oklahoma City.

At KTTV, he replaces KINGSLEY SMITH who left the station last October after two years as ND and 20 years with FOX.

More on this story later this week in our full report.

Tuesday, March 25, 2014 UPDATE:
