January 19, 2014

Greetings:

Two veteran NDs make up the TWO new NDs in this week’s report. With ONE new opening, our count of open ND jobs now stands at 21 stations looking for a new news director.

We have paid ads for THREE of those opportunities, as well as ads for TWO executive producer positions and ONE Managing Editor at an NBC o-and-o.

Names in the News features a handful of news managers with new jobs, and several GM moves as well, including a former Belo executive landing an executive position with Tribune.

I wanted to correct some mistakes I made last week. I misspelled the name of the late AL VOLKER in reporting his passing, and also misspelled the name of IKE PIGOTT who honored his friend’s life in a blog posting. And KWCH-TV in Wichita is owned by Sunflower Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Schurz. Apologies to all.

Hopefully this week’s report will contain fewer errors. It continues after this from a longtime supporter.

New News Director Openings:

WOI-TV, Des Moines, IA…SCOTT FREDERICK has resigned from this ABC affiliate to pursue other interests. He’s been ND there for more than 10 years. Nexstar is currently operating the station pending final approval of its purchase from Citadel.  You can learn more about this opportunity in the paid ad below.

Also, while not a new opening, the opportunity at WIAT-TV in Birmingham, AL, is being featured in a new paid ad below.

Newly Named News Directors:

McCormick

WPEC-TV, West Palm Beach, FL…MIKE McCORMICK completes the Florida hat trick as he begins his third Sunshine State ND position at this CBS affiliate on Monday. Mike most recently spent 5+ years ND for Jacksonville’s WTEV/WAWS-TV. Earlier in his career he was the ND at WTLV/WJXX-TV in Jacksonville. Mike’s also been an ND in Cleveland and Mobile and has worked in Raleigh, Columbus, OH, Knoxville, and Harrisburg, IL. At WPEC, he replaces CATHY YOUNKIN who left this newly acquired by Sinclair station earlier this month after 4+ years.

WTWO-TV, Terre Haute, IN…DEANA REECE will be the next ND for this Nexstar owned NBC affiliate. She most recently worked for four years as an ND in Central Illinois and, before that, was an ND in Eugene, OR, for seven years. She’s also worked in Rochester, NY. At WTWO, she replaces TOM McCLANAHAN who is stepping down as news director but will continue as an anchor for the station.

January 6, 2014

Greetings:

I hope you enjoyed your holidays. I suspect pretty much everyone’s back to work on Monday, facing frigid cold temperatures here in Indianapolis and much of the country.

Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that two of the THREE new ND openings are in sunny Florida which sounds pretty good about now. One of the openings was created by the surprising departure of a ND for another job in the Sunshine State.

Our list of open ND jobs now stands at 22.

We have ads this week for a corporate news opportunity within Nexstar, for an ND Opening in Iowa, and for an ND/anchor position at a startup operation in Michigan.

In Names in the News, a former ND turned GM steps down for health reasons, there are several news managers on the move, and we’re repeating the obituary for a veteran ND who died over the holiday season….in case anyone missed it.

The list of ND changes (and a lot more) after this ad for the Carole Kneeland Project.

The Kneeland Project Accepting Applications Now

Start your New Year Right. Apply today!

The Kneeland Project is accepting applications for their March 19-22 session in Austin, Texas. Applications are due in about two weeks, on Friday, January 17 and applications are available at kneelandproject.org/apply

Thanks to Kneeland’s generous funders, this opportunity is nearly free for 18 selected news directors.

The Kneeland Project pays for all tuition costs as well as hotel and several meals. Participants cover only their transportation and a few meals — Kneeland takes care of the rest.

In a recent survey of Kneeland Fellows, 100% reported they still regularly use lessons learned at Kneeland, believe that time spent at Kneeland improved their career, and said they have recommended Kneeland to a friend or colleague.

This spring’s participants will be joined by some of the best and brightest leaders in the industry, but they won’t provide didactic, one-way lectures. On the contrary. Kneeland is seeking applications from news directors with high-level expertise, insight, and experience to make this a truly unique opportunity. Most importantly, journalists will leave the program with a solid plan to guide their leadership decisions starting the day they return to their newsroom. This isn’t theoretical information that news managers will put on a shelf and neglect. Every participant will walk away with concrete action items to implement immediately that will make a difference in their station…and their life.

It’s an intensive program unlike any other. It’s practical. It’s highly interactive. It produces long-lasting results. Journalists return to their stations refreshed and ready to tackle the sometimes overwhelming challenges newsrooms now face.

Dick Tuininga

There will be no visitation or memorial service for DICK TUININGA, whose passing we reported to you below.

Per his wishes, the body will be cremated and the ashes scattered in the Pacific.  He loved boats and sometimes lived on one.

Thanks to those of you who sent me personal remembrances of a true TV news character.

Saturday, December 28, 2013 UPDATE:

I’m sorry to disrupt your weekend with news of the death of longtime news director DICK TUININGA.

Dick died this week in Las Vegas at the age of 70.

During the course of his career, he was a news director in many markets, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas (several stations) and perhaps a few others.

I learned of his death from his friend JOE ROVITTO, who kindly allowed me to share his note with you:

I wanted to let you know about the death of a dear friend and fabulous former news director. Dick Tuininga was found dead in his home in Las Vegas, apparently of a heart attack. He was 70 years old. In May, he breezed through quadruple bypass surgery. The exact date and cause of death have yet to be determined, pending all the customary tests.

Dick was a blue collar news director with a heart of gold. Like many in the business, his existence was a nomadic one. Dick ran newsrooms in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and worked in many other markets – occasionally more than once. All Dick needed was a newsroom and he was in his glory. He often referred to television news as his “mistress,” blaming it for a few failed marriages. Until the day he died, Dick would set his alarm for 3AM Las Vegas time so he could watch and critique all the national news programs.

Dick and I talked frequently. He had been retired for approximately 4 years but couldn’t come to terms with it. He had hopes for “one more season.” I’m hoping you can give it to him in your weekly newsletter.

Thanks.

Joe Rovitto

I could not find a picture of Dick to include in this report. If you have one that would be suitable, please email it to me.

If I get any information about funeral arrangements, memorials, etc, I’ll post it here on my website.

regards,

Rick Gevers
