December 16, 2017

Greetings:

A flurry of open news director jobs this week, TWO in top 12 markets, highlight this earlier-than-usual edition of our newsletter.

One of the reasons for our uncharacteristic Saturday delivery is the breaking news from Seattle where a veteran ND is retiring. See more below in our New News Director Openings section.

That move is one of THREE new openings, and, to the best of my knowledge, there are NO newly named NDs.

Our count of open jobs is 18.

Lots of items in Names in the News, including a new EP in New York, a new Assistant ND in Seattle, a former Memphis ND is out of work less than two weeks before returning to her former company in a new role, and a longtime Los Angeles newsman is retiring.

Read on!

Newly Named News Directors:

I’m not aware of any this week. We always appreciate your tips, though, if you know something we don’t!

New News Director Openings:

Dallman

Dallman

KCBS/KCAL-TV, Los Angeles, CA…we told you in a late Wednesday night UPDATE that BILL DALLMAN has left this CBS owned duopoly. He was ND there for a little over two years, spent more than 7 years as the ND for Fox’s KMSP/WTTC-TV in Minneapolis, almost 7 years as the first ND for what was then Fox’s KDVR-TV in Denver, and two plus years as ND for Tegna’s WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, MI. Bill was also the first ND for FOX Sports 1, a job he held for more than 2 years before moving to KCBS. He’s also worked in Sacramento and Austin, MN. His replacement will be the fourth ND in 8 years at KCBS.

Costello

Costello

KOMO-TV, Seattle, WA…late yesterday veteran ND PAT COSTELLO announced his pending retirement. He’ll leave this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate when the February rating period ends. He’s been ND here for three years. GM JANENE DRAFS sent this note to the staff, which includes a note from Pat. Pat told me he’ll split time between Seattle and Phoenix, where he and wife still own a place from his three years as ND at KNXV-TV. He spent more than twelve years at KING-TV in Seattle, the first seven years as ND and later Station Manager. He’s also been a news director in Chicago and Salt Lake City, an assistant news director in Baltimore, and began his career as a photojournalist in Indianapolis and Columbia, MO.

Reynolds

Reynolds

WTVM/WXTX-TV, Columbus, GA…SHAWN REYNOLDS is heading 90 miles up I-85 to Atlanta, where he’ll become the Morning Executive Producer for Meredith’s CBS affiliate, WGCL-TV. The GM for the Raycom owned ABC affiliate, HOLLY STEUART, distributed this email. Shawn’s been the news/content director (their title, not mine) for just over two years. He’s also worked in Indianapolis, at The Weather Channel, for two stations in Atlanta, Huntington, WV, and in Lexington and Hazard, KY.

Another news director change late today in Los Angeles, as BILL DALLMAN has left KCBS/KCAL-TV after just over two years as news director for this o-and-o.

Bill’s a former news director in Minneapolis at the Fox owned duopoly (KMSP/WFTC-TV), and was the startup news director for KDVR-TV in Denver which was owned by Fox at the time. His first ND job was at WZZM-TV in Grand Rapids, MI.

Bill spent the two years before KCBS as the first news director for Fox Sports 1 in Los Angeles.

He’s also worked in Sacramento and Austin, MN, where he began his career as an anchor/reporter. His complete background is here.

Bill’s replacement will be the fourth news director in eight years at KCBS.

We’ll have more on all the week’s news in our full newsletter later this week.

Those items include FIVE local stations winning DuPont Awards, the retirement of a veteran broadcaster who’s worked for the network, served FOUR large market stations as news director, and also was a GM in several markets, and a new GM in Tampa.

Though I am not from Eastern North Carolina, I will always be grateful for your warm welcome and have relished rolling up my sleeves with you. While I am leaving WCTI, I am not stepping away from either life or business. Thank you for letting me serve with you and all of the best of luck.

Late today SKIP VALET was named General Manager of Nexstar’s Tampa duopoly, WFLA/WTTA-TV (NBC/My Network). Here’s the official news release.

Greetings:

We’re pleased to tell you that TWO news directors were promoted to GM positions this week. That’s a development that we always like to share. And…in Names in the News…we’ll tell you about a top ten market ND who’s also been named Station Manager.

Those are among the THREE newly opened ND jobs we’ll tell you about this week. And, as far as I know, there are NO newly named news directors.

Those changes bring our list of openings to 15.

We have TWO paid help wanted ads, including a new one for a producer in Indiana.

There are TWO obituaries, including one for a man who had a key role in shaping RTDNA (and television news) in the 70’s and 80’s.

And we have several news managers on the move, including a former Virginia ND who’s landed a new job in Cleveland.

All that…and more…as you read on.

Schultz

ERNIE SCHULTZ, a one time news director in Oklahoma City who went on to become a pivotal leader in the history of RTDNA, died this week at the age of 87. He fell in his home and suffered a brain bleed. Two time RTDNA Chairman BOB PRIDDY wrote this lengthy and interesting obituary of Ernie. It’s partly a look at how television news changed in the 70s and 80s, and well worth a few minutes of your time.

KEN ROWLAND, a legendary anchor for two stations in Louisville who also served as the first news director for WLKY-TV, died this week at the age of 91. He’s also credited for hiring and mentoring DIANE SAWYER. Learn more here.

Congratulations to WJLA-TV (Washington, DC) News Director MITCH JACOB who’s assuming additional duties as station manager for this Sinclair owned ABC affiliate. November 26, 2017

Greetings:

Just 12 openings in our admittedly unofficial list of ND openings across the country.

That’s the tally after a holiday week that saw THREE jobs filled (granted, one of those five months ago!) and just ONE new opening.

We have TWO Paid Help Wanted ads for management openings at stations.

In Names in the News, TWO new EPs were named, and we also have TWO obituaries.

All that and more in this week’s report.

KUVN-TV, Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX…RAQUEL AMPARO moves across town to become ND for this Unvision station. Raquel shared the news with friends via this post on Facebook. Raquel replaces SAMUEL BELILTY who left in September to become ND for Univision’s Miami station, WLTV.

WNDU-TV, South Bend, IN…KATE GLOVER is the new news director for this Gray TV NBC affiliate. GM JOHN O’BRIEN sent this note to the staff. Kate most recently spent seven months as ND for Tegna’s WGRZ-TV in Buffalo. She’s been an ND in Portland, OR, and had worked in Buffalo earlier in her career as well as in Washington and San Diego. She replaces JESSICA LASZEWSKI who was only here a few months before returning to Wisconsin as ND for Gray’s WMTV in Madison.

WSAW-TV, Wausau, WI…we’re late in reporting that SARAH GRAY became the ND for this Gray TV owned CBS affiliate last June. Here’s her bio from the WSAW website. She’d been an EP for a Gray sister station, WBAY-TV in Green Bay, having first joined WBAY as a producer. She replaced the above referenced JESSICA LASZEWSKI who left Wausau to become ND for Gray’s South Bend station, WNDU-TV, but only stayed a few months before returning to Wisconsin as ND for Gray’s WMTV in Madison.

New News Director Openings:

WMC-TV, Memphis, TN…our dearth of new openings ends this week with news that TAMMY PHILLIPS will leave Raycom’s Memphis early in December. She shared this heartfelt note with her staff.
