January 28, 2018

Greetings:

The first slow week of the new year, with just ONE newly named news director and ONE new ND opening.

So our list of news director openings remains constant at 24 this week. THREE of those openings are among our FOUR paid help wanted ads.

We have TWO news managers on the move in our Names in the News segment, a look at the Boston ratings wars one year after a major affiliate swap, an item about a new book from a veteran producer and EP, and we’ll tell you why it was a sad week here at the World Headquarters.

That and more as you read on.

RHONDA KITCHENS returns to KPLC-TV, Raycom’s NBC affiliate in Lake Charles, LA, as Morning Assistant News Director. She has ten years experience in the Lake Charles market and has been working most recently in Beaumont as News Content Manager/Assistant News Director at KBMT-TV.

The Boston Globe looks at the ratings situation in Boston, a little over a year after NBC pulled its affiliation from WHDH-TV and created its own station in Bean Town.

Congratulations to former producer and EP MONICA VALENTO ALLREAD on the publication of her first book, which has an unusual backstory (tease: it’s co-written with a fourth grade student from Kenya). Monica worked at stations in Toledo (full disclosure: I hired her), Dayton, Cincinnati, Orlando, Birmingham, and Phoenix, before leaving TV for a position with a school district. You can learn more about the book, and buy a copy, by clicking here.

Finally, I’m sorry to report the death of one of the Associates this week. Deuce T. Cat (it stands for The, what else?) left us after 20 years. While only a handful of you ever met Deuce, more of you heard him, as, in his later years, he developed the somewhat annoying habit of vocalizing his displeasure about whatever was on his mind, often when I was on the phone. (Some asked if I was running a daycare on the side.)

We acquired him 20 years ago in Grand Rapids from a rescue. He and his brother (who we also adopted) were born under a trailer. Deuce and Reggie’s lives improved greatly, and so did ours.

RIP Deuce - 1998-1/22-2008

January 21, 2018

Greetings:

TWO is the number of the week.

TWO newly named news directors, and TWO new stations have ND openings, ONE of those created by the incumbent’s promotion to general manager, an event we’re always pleased to report.

With those changes our always unofficial list of news director openings remains at 24. THREE of those openings are among our SIX paid help wanted ads.

Speaking of ads, we’re pleased to welcome back Stephen Arnold Music which has increased its sponsorship of this newsletter, for which we are grateful.

Names in the News features TWO items from New York and Wichita, while our TWO new general manager items involve stations just 108 miles apart on I-75.

All this and more below.

Newly Named News Directors:

Sherer

Sherer

Spectrum News, Central North Carolina…this cable news operation has named BRANDON SHERER news director. It’s owned by Charter. Brandon will be based in Raleigh, which is convenient since he’s been the Assistant News Director for WTVD-TV in Raleigh/Durham. He’s been a news director in Cape Girardeau, MO, and has worked in Baltimore and Des Moines.

Phillips

Phillips

WMC-TV, Memphis, TN…they won’t have to change the nameplate on the news director’s door as GREG PHILLIPS replaces TAMMY PHILLIPS at this Raycom owned NBC affiliate. It may be an ideal move for Greg who describes himself as a big Elvis fan (he’s been to Graceland twice.) He’s spent the last eight years as the Assistant ND/Special Projects Director for Raycom’s WVUE-TV (FOX) in New Orleans. He’s worked for another New Orleans station as well as in Houston, Phoenix, and Austin, TX. Greg’s namesake (though no relation) predecessor is now a Senior Corporate Recruiter for Raycom.

New News Director Openings:

Morris

Morris

KTVB-TV, Boise, ID…congratulations to KATE MORRIS who’s been named General Manager for this Tegna owned NBC affiliate. An Idaho native, she’s been the news director here since 2011 and spent 3+ years as an EP there before that. Kate’s also worked as a producer in Phoenix. She’ll take over in March when longtime GM DOUG ARMSTRONG retires.

Becker

Becker

KMIR-TV, Palm Springs, CA…ROSS BECKER has left the Entravsion owned NBC/Univision duopoly after just more than a year as ND. Ross has spent most of his career as an anchor, working in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Green Bay. The search is on for his replacement as you’ll learn in the help wanted ad just below.

And while not a new opening, also check out the paid help wanted ad for the ND job at Nexstar’s WFLA-TV in Tampa, just below.

January 14, 2018

Greetings:

The new year continues to produce a lot of news, both in the real world and our small TV world.

THREE newly named NDs in our report, with just ONE new opening. But that one is notable as it is generated by a newsroom who’s been an ND for 25 years at one station.

Those changes bring our court of open ND jobs to 24. THREE of those openings are among our SIX paid help wanted ads.

Lots of updates in our Other News Management Openings section, and lots of items in our Names in the News department. There you’ll see about the retirement of a major market producer who’s produced one show for 30 years and has worked with just THREE anchors. You’ll also learn about a former Missouri ND returning to his former station as an EP, and we’ll tell you about a California ND who found a car stolen from one of his photographers.

All this and much more as you read on.

Cleveland19 is the brand name for the content we put on our CBS affiliate WOIO, our MyNetwork station WUAB, cleveland19.com, our OTT stations on Roku, Amazon Fire & AppleTV and our social media outlets, plus whatever gets invented next week that we don’t know about yet.

Read the posting to see who we’re looking for. Right now here’s what’s in it for you:

Raycom is a privately-owned company that is great to work for (you can click here to find out more about them.) It’s a company that understands where the industry is going and encourages and rewards innovation. They are very forward thinking on the digital front and just recently launched a national investigative unit.

And then there’s Cleveland. Don’t think of the throwaway thumbnail sketches you’ve heard to describe Cleveland. It’s not this. It’s this, this, and this. It’s a city making great improvements and with a lot of momentum. A vibrant downtown. A beautiful waterfront. A city with a perennial NBA contender in the Cavs, one of the biggest World Series threats in the Indians, and a team with nowhere to go but up in the Browns.

Hey, we’ve got some room to improve, too. Are you the person who wants to take it on this challenge?

Ok, if you’ve gotten this far you just might be interested. That, or you are actually Rick Gevers. If you’d like to apply, click here. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

After more than 35 years at WLS-TV in Chicago, most of them as the 6:00 producer, BOB VEASEY is retiring next month. Here’s part of the note that ND JENNIFER GRAVES sent to the newsroom. Remarkably, during that 30 years he’s been producing the 6:00 news, there have only been three anchors! I don’t know Bob, but best wishes for a great retirement, even if he is a Cubs fan.

SCOTT BRADY returns to WJLA-TV (Sinclair/ABC) in Washington as an executive producer. He was a producer there in the 90’s. Most recently he was the news director for KYTV in Springfield, MO before losing his job with Gray TV consolidated the operations of KYTV and KSPR-TV there.

JILLIAN O’BRIEN moves cross country from Hearst’s KSBW-TV in Monterey, where she was the Assistant ND. She’s headed to Washington to be the EP of Matter of Fact with SOLEDAD O’BRIEN, to whom she is NOT related.

KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo may be in a small market, but used ‘big thinking’ to come up with this great new set from our friends and longtime supporters, Devlin Design Group.

And check out this video to see how KGET-TV (Bakersfield) News Director MICHAEL TRIHEY found a car stolen from one of his photographers and confronted the perp!

January 7, 2018

Wednesday, January 10, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A network owned station in Los Angeles has a new news director.

Finestone

Finestone

CBS owned KCBS/KCAL-TV has promoted TARA FINESTONE to be VP/News Director of its duopoly there. She’s been the Assistant News Director since July 2016, when she was hired by the man she replaces, BILL DALLMAN. Bill left the station last month after more than two years as ND.

Tara’s a veteran of the Los Angeles market, having worked at two other stations (KNBC-TV and KTLA-TV) as well as for the NBC News bureau in Los Angeles. She’s also worked in Seattle and Spokane.

Her complete bio is on her Linkedin page.

More on this story and all the latest news in our full report this weekend.

Tuesday, January 9, 2018 UPDATE:

Greetings:

A surprising move in Atlanta today where a general manager change was made at Meredith’s WGCL-TV, the CBS affiliate there.

Banks

Banks

In is LYLE BANKS, out is GM MARK PIMENTEL.

Here’s the news release announcing Banks’ hire.

He’s a former GM at WMAQ-TV in Chicago and WAVY-TV in Norfolk. He also worked in management at KXAS-TV in Dallas and KXAN-TV in Austin, TX, and was the head of Banks Broadcasting, a joint venture with several partners who tried to expand the number of minority TV station owners.

He may be best remembered during his time at WMAQ for hiring JERRY SPRINGER to do commentaries on the late news. That move caused the departures of anchors RON MAGERS and CAROL MARIN and created a lot of controversy in the market. This 1998 Chicago Tribune article has more.

Pimentel

Pimentel

Pimentel had been GM at WGCL for just over three years. He’d been a GM at Meredith’s KMOV-TV in St. Louis before that, and had also been a GM in Louisville, Richmond, Lexington and Huntsville. Mark came up the news ranks, having served as an ND in Atlanta, Baltimore, and Charleston, SC, and worked in several other markets.

More later…

Greetings:

If every week is like this first week of the new year, I’ll be a busy fellow and you’ll have lots to read about.

FOUR news director openings this week, TWO in to 20 markets, and all created by departures (some voluntary, some not) by NDs with many years of experience.

Our always unofficial list of openings stands at 26. TWO of those openings are among our THREE Paid Help Wanted ads. And the third ad is for a very attractive corporate news position.

To the best of my knowledge, there were no news directors named this week. If I’m wrong, please let me know.

We have an obituary for a former Texas ND, several new GMs (one in a top five market), a huge promotion for Meredith’s VP/News, and several other news management moves.

And we’ll close with a light-hearted Washington Post look at the top ten movies about journalism. (The list isn’t perfect..one of my favorites, The Paper, isn’t included.)

That’s all below.

Newly Named News Director:

I’m not aware of any newly named news directors.  Please let me know if I’ve missed anything.

New News Director Openings:

Berra

Berra

WFLA-TV, Tampa, FL…we told you earlier this week (in one of two updates) that BILL BERRA is retiring at the end of March after about four years as the ND for this Nexstar-owned NBC affiliate. Bill…and his GM SKIP VALET…sent these two emails to the staff. In addition to his time at WFLA, Bill’s been an ND in Milwaukee, Columbus, OH, Orlando, Phoenix, St. Louis (two stations) and Memphis.

D'Ambrosi

D’Ambrosi

WOIO/WUAB-TV, Cleveland, OH…our second update this week reported the departure of veteran ND FRED D’AMBROSI who left this Raycom owned duopoly on Friday. Fred had been there almost three years and has also been an ND in Washington, DC, San Diego, and Milwaukee. Earlier in his career he worked for another Cleveland station, as well as in Green Bay and Columbia, MO.

Evans

Evans

WPSD-TV, Paducah, KY…congratulations to longtime ND BILL EVANS who’s been promoted to General Manager for this Paxton Media owned NBC affiliate. Bill’s been there for more than 20 years, first as ND then VP/News and Operations since 2000. He’s a former ND in Tulsa and has worked in many other markets as shown on his Linkedin page. The search for his replacement…to be called Director of Cross Platform Content…is detailed in the Paid Help Wanted ad below.

Howard

Howard

KHSL/KNVN-TV, Chico, CA…SCOTT HOWARD has left this Heartland Media owned CBS/NBC duopoly after seven years in his second stint as ND here. His time as ND was interrupted by a five year term as a news director in Reno. You can learn more about this interesting opportunity in the Paid Help Wanted ad below.

He’s been named Executive Vice President of Operations for the company, overseeing all the stations. GMs will report to him. Details here. Patrick’s been with Meredith since 2002, first working in Phoenix, then Portland, OR, before assuming his current role in May 2014. He’s also worked in San Francisco and Toledo. Congratulations as well to COLIN BENEDICT who’s been promoted to VP/News for Morgan- Murphy media, the parent company of WISC-TV in Madison, WI, where Colin will continue to serve as news director. He’s worked for WISC for almost 20 years, first as an anchor/reporter, then Managing Editor. Colin was promoted to news director in August, 2008.

WTVF-TV in Nashville has a new executive producer. BETHANY DAVISON joins this Scripps owned CBS affiliate from WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, where she held the same job. Bethany’s also worked in Tampa, Roanoke, and San Luis Obispo, CA.

One-time Little Rock News Director MARK RAINES has been promoted at the Arkansas PR firm where he has worked since 2014.

Finally, we don’t too often stray from our typical coverage of news director, news manager, and GM moves, but I thought you might enjoy this article from Sunday’s Washington Post listing what its contributors thought were the 10 best moves about journalism.

General Manager News and Notes:

Ramsey

Ramsey

BRAD RAMSEY returns to a TV station as he’s the new general manager for Tegna’s WFAA-TV, the ABC station in Dallas. It’s a return to Tegna/Belo for Brad, who once served as GM of the company’s WVEC-TV in Norfolk and as director of sales for the company. He’s been serving as the VP of business strategy for The Center for Sales Strategy, a sales performance consulting company. More here.

Sinclair has named new general managers in three of its market: Portland, OR, San Antonio, TX, and El Paso, TX. Click here for the details.

You may remember that last we shared a list of station general managers who retired during 2017. We’ve updated that list with one additional name: JEFF MARKS, who retired from Gray TV last year. That’s a loss of a lot of experience across the industry in just one year.
